Senior Counselor Finn Derouen had gone for a walk in the rain with no real, clear idea of where he'd wind up. The only thing clear to him was that if he stayed indoors at the senior cabin for any longer, he would probably go nuts. It seemed vaguely bullshit to him that the day's activities had been cancelled on account of weather - when he'd been a camper (at Jewish summer camp, several states south of here), nothing could stop activities. But then again, parents hadn't been as likely to sue if you slipped and fell on a slick patch of georgia clay five years ago.

By the time he realized he was over by the girl's cabins, his poncho was nearly soaked through. Finn entertained the idea of dropping in to annoy the hell out of his sister very briefly, but decided he'd rather not inspire the ire of a bunch of teenaged girls. Instead, he kept walking through the rain until he spotted a pair of girls huddled on the porch of Azalea cabin.

Finn trudged over and hopped up the stairs. He flopped down on the deck and peeled his poncho off, tossing it into the corner.

The girls were braiding each other's hair.

"Ooh," said Finn, beaming at them. He was not much for spa days but he was basically bored out of his mind. Watching paint dry would have sounded interesting at this point. "Can I be next?"

The majority of the braiding had been done by Ainsley, a little too overexcited about braiding hair lately, that with all the rain she insisted to braid the morning away. She'd been mostly finished by the time the senior counselor had appeared on their porch and asked to be next. Her head flew to the side and after finishing the hair she peeped around the corner of the door to look at him. He was soaked, at least his lower half was! Her eyes shot to the poncho that had been laid aside and quickly she went off to get a towel before she came back with a brush as well!

"Here! I don't want you to catch a cold!" There was a growing smile on her face as she held up the brush in her other hand. and looked at the man on the porch with a braiding-enthusiastic mannerism. "I would be honoured to braid your hair next!" Next happened to be right now while her plot to braid everyone's hair was beginning to unfold as she imagined the possibilities with this one counselor.

Finn took the towel and dried himself off as best he could. His shorts were soaked, though, and the only cure for that was time, so he wrapped the towel around his shoulders like a cape and beamed at her. "Well," said Finn, "I would be honored if you would braid my hair!" not that there was much of it to braid, but it was pretty shaggy in places and Finn was already imagining he would look pretty awesome with a bunch of tiny spikes.

He studied the girl for a moment, trying to recall her name, before submitting to hair brushing. "Ainsley, wasn't it?" he asked, taking a guess. he was relatively versed in the names of all the campers, but there was still a possibility he'd get it wrong, which would be mildly embarrassing.

Rule number one: never piss off the woman doing your hair.

But he was pretty sure her name was Ainsley. "Will you make me a pretty princess?" he asked.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 23, 2011 8:13 am

He knew her name, wow! The child was impressed, a bit easily perhaps, but impressed nonetheless.

"Ainsley McMahon," she said with a nod, beginning to brush the raindrops free from the man's hair. It was short, but still conveniently long for a man's hair while still not looking like a girl's. It certainly wasn't every day that a human of the male variety asked her to braid his hair and she certainly wasn't going to let his shorter hair stop her, she would just have to do smaller braids like she had done with Sam as he slept on the bus to camp.

"What is the pretty princess' name?" She giggled.

"Finn!" said Finn happily, leaning back on his hands so she could reach his hair more easily. Little tiny braids sounded perfectly okay to him, so long as she had the patience for it. "...That's not a very good name for a princess, is it?" he added, after a bit of consideration.

Hmmm. He needed a better princess name. Finn stared at the rain and thought about it for a while. All the girls had their derpy nature names, didn't they? Maybe his absurd birth name was about to come in handy for something after all.

"I guess I could be Princess Huckleberry for a while," he said. He was probably going to regret this later. "But only to you, okay, Princess Ainsley?"
PostPosted: Thu Jun 23, 2011 6:47 pm

Huckleberry Finn. Maybe if Ainsley was older and forced to read the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in school she could have at least known that his name was from a book but she didn't and she didn't laugh at it either. She took it very seriously! Princess matters were very serious! Luckily for Princess Huckleberry, Ainsley had quite the patience for braiding and with all the rain that was falling, she certainly didn't have anywhere she needed to be but here!

"Princess Huckleberry, my lips are sealed!" She smiled, beginning to part his hair into sections so she could braid it. "What's Princess Huckleberry's favourite colour?" She questioned, looking at a variety of coloured elastics. She would decorate it with only the princesses' favourite.

"Blue," said Finn Princess Huckleberry, without any hesitation. He was rather lucky that he liked blue - it seemed that, as a Mercury Page, he was stuck wearing it and had no choice in the matter. He dreaded to think what he would have done if he'd gotten stuck wearing, say, orange, which he didn't fancy nearly as much.

He was, at least, thankful that she had not known to laugh at his name. That kind of innocence was refreshing - this was one little girl who would never call him ********.

"Are you enjoying camp, Princess Ainsley?" he asked, trying to hold still while she tugged at his hair. (It was easier said than done, since it sort of tickled.) "Doing lots of fun camp things?"
PostPosted: Thu Jun 23, 2011 7:53 pm

Princess Huckleberry's favourite colour was blue, which also happened to be the colour of huckleberries. How neat was that? Of course, Ainsley didn't know what a huckleberry was, and certainly not that it was blue in colour so she dug around in the pile of elastics for as many blue ones as she could find.

"I like blue too," she smiled. It wasn't her favourite colour, but she didn't dislike it.

She'd managed to make one whole tiny braid by now, and began to hold it in place by tying a rather bright blue elastic around it. It almost looked like it could glow in the dark it was so bright. Her fingers work idly as she thought about camp. It was strange how she'd been so tired lately, but otherwise she was enjoying it. She'd met a new friend and was learning how to swim.

"Very much so Princess Huckleberry! I've been learning to swim, dancing, and making lots of crafts! What about you? Are you having fun too?"

She even talked like a princess, reflected Finn. What kid said 'Very much so'? He didn't know where she was from, but he'd decided he wanted to adopt her. It might not be allowed, but if he ever had kids he wanted them to be as polite and adorable as 'Princess' Ainsley.

He only narrowly stopped himself from nodding in response to her question. Tensing his neck, Finn agreed, "Yeah, I am! I've been teaching some of the older kids camping skills. They're starting to get the hang of it!"

How to start a safe campfire was generally a pretty exciting lesson. Pitching a tent... more than a little disastrous on a good day. But these were important life skills as far as Finn was concerned. How did you know you weren't going to wind up stranded in the Virginian backwoods tomorrow with only the most basic of supplies?

"I'm going to teach everyone how to do tie-dye later this week," he said, thinking fondly of the bottles of dye in his dresser. Blake had held up his end of the deal admirably - it was going to be great. "Have you done tie-dye before, Princess?"

Although Ainsley was at camp, camping skills were one of the last things the child knew how to do. She couldn't imagine being out in the real wilderness where she had nothing but a tent and a pot of water. She was so thankful there was cabins with running water and beds to sleep in. She nodded her head to her princess for the day, finishing the last braid on the left side of his head. They were looking so cute!

It took a moment, but she shifted back to reality and listened to what Huckleberry was saying. It was hard to because she hadn't the slightest idea what he was talking about and when he asked if she'd ever done it before she could only braid in silence for a moment before she shook her head to herself.

"I haven't, at least, I do not believe I have. What is it Princess Huckleberry?"

He had a sneaking suspicion that she had no idea what he was talking about, and that was just sad. What kind of poor, deprived child was currently braiding his hair? "It's, um, well, you know those shirts people have with the colorful swirlies on them?"

Frequently, he would have demonstrated the concept with his own shirt, but today he was wearing a faded political campaign tee from the Reagan administration. "Anyways, you can do that with rubber bands, some Rit dye, and a white shirt! We're going to make them. It'll be cool, and you'll get to take it home from camp and wear it and it'll be all yours."

Why pay for tie-dye when you could DIY? The process was a bit tricky and more than one kid had accidentally turned their shirt brown by dipping it in too many colors before, but Finn was feeling confident. He was a pro, and under his careful instruction, the kids would be pros, too. "Doesn't that sound cool?" he asked.

The child had moved onto the other side of the male princess' head with careful fingers as she listened to him describe the tie-dye to her with the sound of the rain orchestrating it beautifully. It sounded interesting, but perhaps a little hard for the child to understand from him explaining the process to her with words. She couldn't picture what the shirt would look like, or what tie-dye defined. It was probably because she'd never seen a tie-dyed shirt before that she couldn't understand it better.

"I'd like to try and see someday," she mused. "Is it fun?"

"Oh, it's definitely fun!" agreed Finn. "They turn out really cool looking and then they're something you can have forever that you made! And no two tie-dye shirts are ever alike! Like snowflakes!"

For him, this was part of the appeal - that you could never make the same design twice, even if you tried. Sometimes he thought about making a metaphor out of that but it always wound up sounding kind of stoned.

"How are my braids coming?" he asked. He noticed she was working on the other side of his head now, but beyond that he couldn't be certain.
PostPosted: Wed Jul 06, 2011 6:27 am

"Maybe I should try," she said in response, finishing up another braid and moving on. At this point his braids were almost done, giving him a rather floppy looking hairstyle due to the amount of small braids that were hanging from the top of his head. He sort of looked like some sort of mutant bunny with like a dozen ears or something, flopping all over the place and the thought of it ended up causing a small giggle to slip from the child.

"Wonderful," she said with an, "Almost... done..." drawn slowly after.

It took a couple minutes, but the child feverishly twisted and moved her hands to braid his hair around and around until she finally finished the last section of unbraided hair. She didn't tell him right away, taking a moment to overlook the work she'd done carefully. Was it perfect? A couple glances up, down and all around and she'd decided it was.

"There! All done! One second!" She announced, scurrying off back into the cabin and to her bags. Somewhere in there was just what she was looking for... and ah ha! There it was. She grinned, and took it with her back outside, holding it up to the side of Princess Huckleberry's head. In her hand, off to the side of his head, was a mirror, now showing the boy a vision of his braids.

"How are they Princess Huckleberry?"

Finn skimmed a gentle hand over his braids, admiring them in a manner that was deliberately camp. "They look fabulous, Princess Ainsley!" he said ecstatically, turning his head to view the other side. Oh, this was marvelous. Ridiculous, but marvelous. Finn got slowly to his feet and retrieved his dripping poncho from the corner.

"I'm going to go back to the senior staff cabin and show them to everyone and they will be so jealous," he declared. Who wouldn't be jealous of his braids? They were the best thing ever. He shook out his poncho and pulled it delicately over his head, being careful to not mess up his braids. "And when they all ask me where I got such a fantastic, daring 'do... I'll tell them it was none other than a real, bonafide princess who did them!"

He curtseyed lowly to the girl and flipped his hood up over his head. "Well, princess!" he said. "I will see you... at tie-dye!"

And then he bounded off into the rain.
