Rán was a prodigious youth, displaying incredible skill when it came to fighting, tracking, and hunting. While she still lacks the experience that comes with years, her teachers were inclined to be lenient with her as a result of her gifts, and she has grown headstrong and a little inconsiderate as a result. She can be judgmental, with a holier-than-thou attitude, and holds particular disdain for malicious individuals. In addition, she considers it natural that she look after herself first and foremost, and this view was further reinforced by the help of her pampering older brother, Ezra. Her familiar, Little Brother, tried to make Rán more compassionate at times, but the fox is no Jiminy Cricket.
Used to being the golden child, she’d gladly accepts criticism if she believes it is easily overcome (what better way to impress someone than to "become a better person," after all?). However, if it is perceived as too difficult, or hits too close to home, she may be stubborn about acknowledging her shortcomings. But while she enjoys hearing compliments, she does not rely on others’ opinions of her; she is easily flattered, but not easily swayed.
Ultimately, however, she was raised within a strong community, so it is important to her that she look after her peers, even if the depths of her concern are shallow, and she may not prioritize it as highly as her herdmates may like. Because she’s used to being skilled and being part of a large herd that cares for her, it’s difficult for her to wrap her mind around the idea of having no safety net, or having a small or nonexistent family.
Her best friend, beside her brother and familiar, is the shy and clumsy Heliotrope (Kyrieko), whom she often drags on adventures and glorious battles with.

(It was difficult for Rán—for anyone, really—to determine the sex of creature made of shadow, and Little Brother herself does not care much about pronouns, so long as she is treated with respect. Ezra was born to Rouxe in her effort to redeem herself to her herd. (They are a part of the Code of Edda, a herd where females, known as valkyries, have the honor of sending worthy individuals to a paradise called Valhalla by killing them with their own hands. As Roxue herself is unable to kill due to her strong unicorn blood, she had hoped to raise daughters who would make up for her own failures. Her first breeding, however, resulted it only one daughter and three sons. Dumah was left with his father, but the rest—Riomie, Elijah, and Ezra—were taken to the Code of Edda.)
Although Ezra did not inherit any abilities due to being male, he was not unhappy with his lot in life. He was loved, raised in a close community, and barely knew the ills of sickness or hunger. This changed when his best friend stood upon Death's door. Although a valkyrie was able to provide relief by sending his friend to Valhalla, Ezra never forgot the powerlessness he felt in that moment, and he grew envious and bitter of the valkyries' abilities. In an effort to retain some control, he left the herd lands and began killing individuals he deemed as unworthy (thereby preventing them from ever reaching Valhalla, for a valkyrie could not kill someone that was already dead).
He tried to limit his kills at first, as a valkyrie would. Eventually, however, he began slaughtering indiscriminately, his jealousy coloring his vision and convincing him that no one was deserving of Valhalla. In an effort to rein in his temper and stop him from defiling the valkyries' name, Rouxe dragged him back home.
Rouxe was pregnant at the time, and soon gave birth to another daughter. Surrounded by valkyries as well as his new sister, and reminded of what he could never have, it seemed the herd was not the ideal place where he could heal. However, Ezra, by turns and degrees, became invested in his younger sister's welfare, and eventually helped raise her to be a proper valkyrie. The task had grown soothing to him, and he was able to find peace as her stalwart and steadfast weapon.
(To provide even more exposition, a valkyrie possess two weapons: bodily weapons are those she has naturally, such as hooves and teeth. Non-bodily weapons encompass all other types, and can be blades, scythes, and so forth. A valkyrie may only send an individual to Valhalla by killing them with bodily weapons. If she accidentally renders a hard blow to an unworthy soquili, she becomes tainted. However, she may prevent them from reaching paradise—and thereby preserve her honor—by making sure they die as a result of a non-bodily weapon. Having another living creature as a valkyrie's non-bodily weapon, such as a familiar or another soquili, is unconventional. Because accidents can happen anywhere, a living weapon must devote their life to their valkyrie, and must be with them at all times. In addition, the valkyrie is trusting them to defend her own integrity. While it's possible for valkyries to have both living and non-living weapons, a valkyrie often possesses only one or the other out of respect for their weapon.) |

The Lady Ashton Grey was born a b*****d child; shunned from the home of her blood family, she was taken in by a guard of the Ramdragon branch. Knowing she possessed noble holy blood, even if diluted, her adopted father strove to educate her and teach her the etiquette and the mannerisms of the holy. Of course, not being holy himself, he was not aware of all the nuances, and anyone in the holy class would have been able to tell she was of a lower rank if her halfbreed heritage didn't alert them of it in the first place. While Lady Ashton was content to learn, she lived by the barracks he worked in, and was curious to hear about guard duties as well. Although her father had not adopted her with the expectancy that she take the same job as him, he was happy to instruct her.
Her status was uncertain for most of her early life, and treatment of her varied after her adopted father took her in, ranging from "fraud" to "pseudo-holy." The end result was that she did not socialize much at all. The training she received from her adopted father—and later her blood family when they formally brought her into the fold—meant that she could traverse social circles well; however, she gives the impression of being distant, which in reality is a reflection of her social awkwardness.
She is always formal, such as requesting she always be called Lady Ashton Grey or Lady Ashton, and nothing less (the "Lady" may be omitted by close friends, however). But while soquili in her home herd may consider her too informal, those outside the culture see her as stuffy. Casualness surprises her, and she may be offended by it before she realizes what it is.
Despite the fact that her family, both adopted and blood, prepared her for a life of nobility, she was most comfortable with the Ramdragon guards. No matter how they perceived her in the beginning, she spent the majority of her childhood in the barracks and they eventually grew to see her as one of their own, and she likewise. She is never more at ease than when she is patrolling, caring for her weapons, or training.

Lady Ashton Grey was part of a prominent empire, ruled by the holy kirin class. Although she was tied by blood to the house of Grey, she was a b*****d child, the result of a tryst between her father, Lord Grey, and an unknown mare during his unruly years. But while her halfbreed status left her ostracized from both the ruling and lower classes, she was not entirely alone. One of the royal guards of the Ramdragon branch took her under his wing and raised her as his own (which later stirred a scandal. Eventually it was determined that, while pureblooded kirin were too holy to fight with their own persons or be touched by nonsacred hands, she was allowed to debase herself if she chose).
Years later, Lord Grey married. His wife, the Countess of Grey, was particularly honorable, and convinced him to legitimize Ashton's birth via adoption. Although Ashton's mixed ancestry would prevent her from inheriting land or passing down her status, she was allowed her own title, as well as the comforts and privileges that came of being a daughter of an earl. In addition, she was allowed to be a sibling to her adoptive mother's children, her half-brothers. These rights were allotted to her by law. The execution of them, however, was another matter.
In truth, her interaction with her blood family was restricted, and she was not allowed on her father's estate very often. However, the majority of her time was occupied by her duties, and as she had been adopted well after she'd settled into her life as a guard, she did not overly mind. It was only after her caretaker, the Ramdragon guard, died of old age did the effects of politics begin to wear on her. When her half-brothers had grown, and she knew them to be men in their own right, she took her leave, and has since entered the Kawani lands.
Misc. Background
It was not uncommon for kirin purebloods to have flings with unholy persons; however, it was rare that anything had come of it. The general view was that "technically a holy and unholy individual should not touch, unless the former is honoring the latter -- eg. holy deigns to touch unholy's forehead as thanks for saving the holy's life -- but we are not exactly going to call out the holy ones from doing what they want." It was therefore the responsibility of the unholy one to keep any flings a secret, including getting rid of illegitimate children. (I want to stress that they did not view abortion in the same way many in the U.S. do today. When Ashton was born, it was not viewed as "her mother valued her child's life over her father's ultimately redeemable honor, and her father should take responsibility for his own actions" so much as "her mother did not do right by the holy ones; she let her selfish desires defile the name of our leader and, by extension, the rest of our community." I also want to stress that this view was sustained because, at the end of the day, the holy kirin were good and fair leaders, and the lower classes held no grudge against them. Flings between the holy and unholy were not seen as an abuse of power, but a natural event, especially since both parties sought consent. While an imbalance of power existed, it was unlikely to force anyone; if an individual was unwilling, then it would be seen as dishonorable lie to a holy one by consenting, and if a holy one was rejected they would likely shrug and find another if it was something they wanted to pursue. There was no taboo against sex, only unholy x holy.)
Of course, it was also not impossible for there to be other mixblooded kirin of the holy line. Alternative paths existed for her, including: pretending she was a foreigner's child (and glossing over the fact that her kirin blood, floral markings, and platinum mane clearly came from the holy line); having her adopted by an unholy, but noble family; or allowing her to live with the holy family as a middle- to high-class servant. Her father's parents died early, however, so it was up to her father to deal with the aftermath. Despite the wishes of his council, he decided to ignore the problem (again, the incident occurred during his unruly years), which allowed her to be scooped up by a guard.
The Ramdragon guard was aware of the politics and the scandal, and thus never filed for formal adoption, which allowed her blood family to adopt her in the future. (Even knowing of the scandal, he took her in, for he could not bear to see her so young and alone. In light of the Lord Grey's indecision, many others opted to ignore her, fearing that taking any action on her part would incite his wrath. Lord Grey was personally fine with the outcome, thinking that her rank as a guard, who by the requirements of physical training would not be untouchable, would push her status further from himself. This changed when he married his wife.)
(Lady Grey would not have interfered had Ashton followed any alternative path; however, she felt that her husband handled the matter improperly and believed the only way to seek justice for Ashton's "debasing" was to adopt. Efforts were made to extract her from guard duty, but was tactfully circumvented by both father and daughter.)
The empire knew the necessity of having guards and fighters to defend their reign, but they were ultimately peaceful pacifists. Meditation, calm, humility, and self-control were an important part of their culture, and was best expressed in their tea ceremonies.
Ashton's tea set came from her late (informally) adoptive father, as noted by the Ramdragon decor.
The periwinkle cloth she wears is her liege's color (aka her blood family's), as well as the color of her father's eyes. Her own bright cyan eyes came from her mother.

Ishvar is a neutral individual, believing that no one is truly good, but that no one is truly evil, either. Instead, he feels that everyone is the result of luck and circumstance. This is not to say that individuals cannot change their own fate (for he is a strong believer of taking action, too), but that if someone is evil, Ishvar feels they deserve to be forgiven rather than despised, for it is likely there was some factor in their own lives that caused them to be what they are.
His beliefs do not stay philosophical, but are practiced every day. For instance, his own family has a history with skinwalkers, wherein one of their own was cursed and returned to sow death and destruction amongst the herd. However, he holds no loathing towards the breed. Ishvar does not begrudge birds for flying, or bears for protecting their young; in the same vein, he does not fault skinwalkers for following their own immutable nature.
To clarify, however, simply because he does not see individuals as evil does not mean he will not protect himself against them. He is understanding, and helps when he can, but he will not be a pushover, either.
If someone states A, he'll argue for B, and as soon as that individual begins to support B, he'll argue for A. His desire to remain unbiased might make him indecisive, but when Ishvar reaches a decision, he’ll stick by it. Some may find him annoying or cowardly due to his propensity to remain neutral, and others have even claimed him to be a callous individual because of how difficult it is to stir emotion in him; while it is difficult to anger him, it is difficult to make him elated, too.
Although he may not fit in as well with his opinionated brethren, however, he is a social creature, and enjoys spending time with them.

Mimsy has little concept of personal space, and may find it difficult to empathize with others. Things that seem natural to another—such as feeling sad about a family member’s death, or growing upset when one is insulted—are alien to him. He is an affectionate creature, and prone to cuddling uninvited. The best brothers in the world, Gunju Wabe and Vorpal Khari, are often subject to these displays.
He is high-spirited, and it’s nearly impossible to get him down. Mimsy laughs constantly, especially when he isn’t supposed to be, and has a hard time standing still. This optimism allows him to easily shrug off events, whether good or bad, and he may come across as forgetful.

Herd Summary:
Jeremiah leads a small gang of soquili who share his views, and together they work to exploit others’ vulnerable positions. They find those stuck between a rock and a hard place, and offer their help in getting out of the situation (as well as take certain steps to ensure the individual won’t get out of the deal once they’re safe). Thought not everyone may agree with their tactics, they’re here to run a business, not a scam, and the herd cuts no corners when doing their work. Though their prices are steep, they leave their customers better off than when they found them.
However, the nature of their work often dips into the sinister. Those in desperate situations may not only be victims of felons, but perpetrators of them, too. In addition, while the herd won’t hurt the innocent, they have no qualms with hurting those who hurt others. As a result, the herd’s work often comes across as criminal themselves.
Membership:
Jeremiah sees his herd as a family; he values honesty from them, and despises betrayal. He considers only those who will fit in smoothly with his existing crew, and only accepts new members once they’ve proven their loyalty. Most often, this involves doing something or giving information that Jeremiah can use as a safeguard against traitors. Those who get in will have the benefit of numbers, connections, and working with a finely tuned machine.

Leaving:
Jeremiah sees no benefit to keeping members against their will. Anyone may leave at any time, for any reason; however, they must have taken care of or passed on any outstanding contacts. In addition, although this information is kept secret from the herd, they may be followed for an undetermined amount of time to ensure the individual’s intent to leave was genuine, and not because they intend to betray the herd.
Ranks:
Contractor. Flutters, usdia, familiars, otherwise small and unnoticeable breeds or species preferred. They are silver-tongued individuals with a sharp eye for determining value and judging character. Their jobs are to find soquili or familiars in tight spots, and promise them aid in exchange for something of value (eg. a prisoner situation where a flutter offers to shrink and slip through the bars of a cell, a familiar acting like a wild creature to get past guards, etc.). They only initiate a contract with individuals they view as honorable, who will still be willing to pay back their debt when they're no longer as desperate to promise anything. It is their job to follow through with the contract, including collecting the payment. They are the most valued members of the herd.
Birds. Spies that gather information, either by keeping an ear out for promising situations, or sent to follow a specific target. They report back to one of the Gamekeepers. They may not necessarily be part of the herd.
Gamekeeper. Manages the Birds. Their job is to look for informants and keep tabs on the ones they have. They test the leads that are given them, and pass on the promising ones to Contractors.
Members. A catch-all term for members who do not fit any other category. They help Contactors with whatever services are needed, such as destroying a portion of a prison wall, or providing muscle. In their free time, they generally do work as finders of lost or stolen goods, or mercenaries for hire.
Guards. Skilled and loyal fighters who, as their title implies, guard things. Bonus points for looking imposing. One or two go with the boss, a few stay in the herd to protect their valuables, and a handful are sent to watch over Delilah in secret (and also discreetly beat up anyone who gives her trouble and make sure she doesn't get her nose into her brother's herd activities). The rest are spread out where they're needed.

Jeremiah is charming and suave, a professional businessman with an eye for opportunity. Despite the trials and near-misses he’s confronted, he remains fearless—to the point of recklessness, some would say—in the face of danger.

Salathiel is the sort who holds his family and herd in high esteem, with all others being held with contempt. As the first grandchild of his herd’s alpha, he is used to being treated well and holding an important position. Though his arrogance can be grating, one can see the justification in it in his graceful stride and deft actions, his economical motions and lightning-quick tail.
While his upbringing was full of privileges, such has having guards and escorts as a foal whenever he ventured from herd lands, he was not pampered.
