He scratched at the back of his head as he walked up to the door of his brother’s place. He knew deep down that his brother never minded watching over his daughter when he had to go out to sea and she couldn’t come with him but it still always made him feel bad for asking. Especially when the trips were a lot longer than he ever intended for them to be. A sigh escaped him and he took a final deep breath as he stopped right in front of the door. A small hesitation and his hand left his head to knock. One, two, three raps and then he waited. Gael could hear the footsteps on the other side of the door so he knew when it was about to open. He gave a smile as the door cracked open. When his brother looked out at him he showed a small second of confusion then gave a big smile.
“Hey Gael! What brings you by today?” He opened the door wide as he spoke since he knew who it was. His brother was always so open armed with everyone in the family.
“Hey Biel, I have another favor to ask you.” A small nervous laugh left him at that.
“Need me to watch that daughter of yours again?” He didn’t miss a beat with that one. “That’s not even a favor. I love having Brexxa here. She’s always helpful and never gets into trouble.” Ever since she’d gotten older and stopped crying thinking her dad was never coming back anyways.
“Heh, yeah. I’ll be going out to sea for a lot longer this time. I didn’t want to bring her since it’s gonna be so long. She’ll be bored to tears this time around.” Gael already knew that Brexxa liked to get off the ship and roam around, explore and pick up treasures. This time it looked like their captain wasn’t planning on making frequent stops but going from one major port to the next to make a larger profit. Not that that was a bad thing but it did make it difficult for a growing girl who wanted to run through the grass. “I just hope she’s not mad at me.”
Biel gave a short laugh then shook his head. It amazed him that his little brother, the single man, cared for his daughter so much. He’d raised her up even without a mother or a woman in the picture and from what he’d seen the girl was perfectly fine. She had manners, kenw how to cook and clean and sew, and she was pretty fierce with her fists if she needed to be. “Little brother, you worry too much. Brexxa adores you and she knows how hard you work to provide for her.” He reached out and pat Gael on the shoulder. “But next time you don’t have to ask. Just send her over. My wife loves having her around.”
A smile lit up his face and he nodded his head at Biel. “Thank you. I’ll make sure to send you some coin to buy her whatever she needs.”
“You don’t have to do that.”
“I know, but I feel better doing that. I always feel guilty when I leave to go out to sea.” It was something he was meaning to fix. Maybe he could become a dock worker or something instead of a deckhand.
“Alright, I won’t argue with you.” Biel held his hands up in surrender. It was the same old same old when it came to that subject. He didn’t think he needed to be ‘paid’ to take care of his niece but Gael always told him to take the money anyways. It was a losing argument. “I’ll have the wife get the guest room ready for her then. Just send her over when its time.”
“Alright, I’ll do that. I need to go get a few more things then I’ll talk to her.” Gael stepped back and waved to his brother before he turned to head off. There was still some shopping to do before he went home.

“Man I think I need to really think about settling down.” Gael said absent mindedly as he leaned against the rail of the ship. It seemed to be his favorite place to be when he wasn’t working or needed to help somewhere.
The captain paused and turned to look at him, a confused look in his eye. “Sorry boy but.. Ain’t you got a kid?”
“What?” He blinked and turned his head to look at the old man instead of out at the waters. “Oh, yeah I do but.. That’s not what I meant.” He chuckled and shook his head as he gave his attention back to the waves. They reflected the sunlight perfectly and it made him smile some. “I meant more like finding a wife.”
“Oh psh. What makes you say that now?” A hand came up to rest on his hip as he regarded one of men who had been on his crew the longest. The captain valued the loyalty and so he looked out for his people. Even paid attention to their personal lives if they wished to spill the tea.
“Just that Brexxa’s getting older and the house is empty again. When I’m home anyways.” Gael was starting to notice more and more his loneliness. He couldn’t just fix it by going to the adoption center and being like ‘I’m back!’ Another child might stave off the feeling for a while but it wouldn’t fix the problem. What he wanted was the deeper connection with someone. A lover to sit with and watch the stars.
“Ah. Yer gettin’ that empty nest thing going are ya?” The captain chuckled a little and shook his head before he moved to stand closer to his crew member. “That’s understandable. It happens to the best of us boy.” He nodded his head at his own words.
“Yeah, I suppose.”
The captain stood in silence for a moment before he glanced to the side at Gael. Then back out to sea. Another moment and he looked back. “You could eh.. Could try that matchmaking thing. Isn’t there one in the port city we dock at in Oba?” He cleared his throat a little as he mentioned the place.
“There is.. And how do you know about that?” Some suspicion crept into his words as he looked at his captain full on.
“Never you mind that.” He avoided any form of eye contact with Gael after that and simply watched the waves roll by.
Gael left it alone and did the same. His eyes watched the waves and he really thought about it. Matchmaking hadn’t been on his mind until then. But he supposed it would work right? Surely he could find a nice woman that way. A matchmaker worth her salt wouldn’t set him up with someone that would end in disaster. It would be bad for business. After a time he nodded his head. “Alright.. When we get back to port I’ll look into it. If it turns out bad I’ll blame you old man.”
“Pfft. Dunno what yer talkin’ ‘bout boy.” The captain just grinned and turned to walk away, leaving Gael with his thoughts.
(( Here Gael seriously considers that his loneliness is from a lack of a life partner and not lack of kids. With the suggestion of his captain he is going to put himself in the care of a matchmaker to find someone to spend his days with, something he'd not considered before. ))
