Since he’d been short on time after spending every second he could with his daughter, Gael hadn’t had enough time to stop by and visit Kalliope. So he’d set aside time for him to write to her. After working most the day he sat down finally in his room and wrote her a small letter.
Kalliope,
I apologize that I was unable to stop by and visit before we set sail. You mentioned letters before and I thought I would take you up on that. My time spent with my daughter was enjoyable. We had dinner together, she cooked, and then did a bit of night fishing. She becoming a good cook too. She must be learning something from my brother’s wife. I hope your performances have been doing well and attracting the large clientele you’ve been looking for. I will be going to the Yaeli port city next if you wish to send your letter there.

She had hoped to see Gael before he set off on his next sea journey but as the sun sank she figured that wasn’t to be so. She felt a bit down about it since she enjoyed their conversations. She hadn’t realized how much she had enjoyed talking about her sons. When the only people she could talk to before had been her friends or their father they already knew everything about the boys. Now with someone new it was exciting. As she resigned to the fact that she wouldn’t have a conversation she got a knock on the door before a paper was slipped beneath it. She got up and collected the letter so that she could read.

With the first letter sent he could only hope that there would be a reply waiting for him at the Yaeli port. When he woke next to his shift they were already out at sea and he could feel the familiar sway of the waves as it rocked the ship. He smiled to himself and got dressed as he moved along. There was much to get done and he was no slacker when it came to work.

She woke the next morning and did a quick reread of the letter she’d written the night before.
Gael,
I was so pleased to get your letter. I’m glad you thought to write me and please don’t apologize for spending time with your daughter. I shall have to send a recipe to you for her to try next time, you might enjoy it. I have to admit I have never done night fishing, I shall mention it to my son so that we might try it for his next day off. I hope this letter reaches you and that you are well. Let me know how your journey is going so that we can continue to exchange letters.

After going over it she folded it and quickly added a seal so that she could get it out with the morning post. She wanted to make sure it reached the Yaeli port town in time for Gael to get.

It had been several days and when they made it to port he felt the excitement in him building. He wanted to run off to the post so that he could see if there was a letter waiting on him but he still had work to do. It would be hours yet before he was released and once he was he was off to the office. The smile he wore when he was told he had a letter told the man behind the counter everything. Gael stepped to the side and read it over before he requested pen and paper so that he could do a reply.

Your letter arrived a day before I did, or so they tell me. Thank you for writing back. The trip seemed especially boring this time around. I would really like to have a recipe if you don’t mind sharing. I am sure Brexxa would like to try something new too. If you and your son go night fishing you should go to Matori. The beaches there are a bit more relaxing if I do say so myself. We’ll be heading to Belrea next I’ll include the port address for you to write to. I look forward to reading your next letter.

She was once again pleased to see that she had gotten a letter from Gael. Even more so when she’d read the ending. He’d changed it. The thought made her smile. So she quickly got to work on another letter for him that could go out with the post.
Gael,
Thank you for giving me the address to send this one to. I have enjoyed your letters very much. I have even written to my other son about you and he is curious. I’ve been dancing pretty regularly these past few days and you will be happy to know that there are indeed more customers that come to watch me. I hope your journey ends soon so that you can come watch again. And if it’s not too much to ask, perhaps I can ask you on a date this time? I have found a place I wish to take you. Jax has also expressed a wish to meet you when you are next in town if that is no trouble. He feels he needs to set the ground rules and intimidate you. I hope you’ll humor him a little. Please write back soon.

Once more he’d been almost bored with the trip across the sea. It was unusual for him to be so dull. The captain had even threatened to lock him in his room if he didn’t smile more. Not much of a threat if you asked him. However, when he arrived at the next port he quickly did his part of the work then departed without a word. He was in such a hurry to check the post. To his delight he had a letter waiting and after reading it he made his own reply.

I would be delighted to go on another date with you when I am back in Oba. Though that might not be for some time. We are staying in Belrea for a time. Another week or so as we arrived ahead of a storm front and have to wait it out. After that we will be heading back to Yael. Normally these long trips didn’t bother me but now I find myself in a hurry to return. As to meeting your son, I see no reason not to. Perhaps I can take you to meet my daughter when I am home. She doesn’t travel to Oba often or I would suggest that. I am glad to hear about your performances. As for my own work, it’s been dull lately. I have been put in charge of a newbie that we picked up in Yael. He’s horrible at his job. Perhaps I can teach him a few tricks though.

Dancing that night had felt like a true chore. She hadn’t wanted to be on the stage for that long, and Kalli loved the stage. As she saw the post come in she felt the desire to rush through her dance but she restrained herself. She knew it would take away from the quality of it. Time seemed to drag on though. The second the music stopped she bowed and then all but dashed off the stage to get her mail. She grinned from ear to ear as she saw the familiar script that was Gael’s handwriting and took off with it to read it in private. Granted they had nothing secret in the letters but she felt like their correspondence was something for just the two of them.

Dear me, I hope the newbie doesn’t drive you crazy. I am also disappointed in the weather. You would think it would know better than to keep a lady apart from someone she wishes to see. I am looking forward to when you are back. I have been practicing a new dance that I will not showcase until you can see it. Customers have expressed a desire for your swift return as well just because of the fact. I would love to meet your daughter, I am sure she is beautiful. I just pray she likes me. I will wait for your next letter and an update on your travels. Be safe my sailor.

He was thankful to receive the next letter before he set out again. It had gotten there a mere day before his captain had them scheduled to sail. He read it over quickly and laughed to himself. The fact that she had a dance waiting made him grin. To ensure she got a reply before he left he went to his room to quickly put pen to paper.

I shall try to rush the captain then. It would be a crime to keep the customers waiting too long. They may even start to strike. Good news is we set out tomorrow and will be headed toward Yael. Same port as last time. I’ll provide the address again in case you lost it. I also picked up an anklet that I saw in the market here. I thought of you when I saw it. I hope you don’t mind. Perhaps it can give you more to work with in your dancing. I noticed that you used your bracelets to draw attention. If you like it then I shall try to send you something else at a later date.

She waited for days for the next letter to arrive but there was nothing. It made her worry that something might have happened. Because of that she found herself asking other sailors that came in if they knew anything was wrong. It wasn’t until one told her there was a bad storm at sea that she realized mail would be delayed. It upset her to also think that Gael might be out in it. Though she hoped he was still in Belrea waiting it out.

It had taken two days longer than expected for him to reach Yael due to the weather but he was pleased all the same when they made it. Of course he did as he usually did and finished up his chores before he left the ship. When she got to the post office he was informed that there was no mail waiting for him. At first he wondered if the gift he’d sent had been too much but then he realized that the weather may have delayed it as well. So he went back to the ship to write another letter, just in case.

I hope I didn’t overstep with my last letter. I had wanted to send you a gift to show I was thinking of you and because I thought it would suit you. We have arrived in Yael now and are expected to be here for another week. This time we get to stay at an Inn instead of on the ship. Hopefully this letter finds you well and I will wait for your reply.

To her delight she ended up getting two letters in the same day. One had been delayed due to weather and it carried with it a lovely anklet that she instantly put on. The other showed his worry over making a mistake with her. She chuckled at the idea and after taking time to admire the gift she sat down to write her response.

I got both of your letters around the same time, apparently there was a delay. I adore the anklet, thank you so much for it. I would not say no to more gifts but I would enjoy your company more. I finally wrote down that recipe as well, I’ll include it with this letter so you can send it to your daughter. Also, I would like it if you would call me Kalli. Its what friends and family call me. I am glad you are safe, try to have fun in Yael and I hope to see you soon.

When he got the next letter he was pleased to see that there had been no misunderstanding between them. Even more so when he was given permission to call her a nickname that she seemed to reserve for family and friends. He tucked the recipe away then set to work on writing to her again.

That is a beautiful nickname. Sorry I do not have one to offer in return. I have enjoyed my stay in Yael so far but I will be pleased when we set sail again. While the place is beautiful it isn’t home. I miss my daughter very much. There is also a certain Oban lady that has my attention and I am eager to see her as well. I will be busy with work the next few weeks so I apologize for no address to give you. I will write again when I can.

She thought it odd that he had no address to give her this time. Was it somewhere the post didn’t go? She wasn’t sure where that would be. Though that was forgotten as she reread the letter and saw that he was eager to see her again. It gave her a butterfly feeling in her stomach that made her feel like she was a teen again. With a shake of her head she held the letter close and grinned. “Just be careful out there sailor..”

I know its been a few days and I hope this letter finds you well. Work has kept me fairly busy for the most part but it looks like things are looking up. Captain says the stay will be short. I picked up this little trinket for you. It’s a dancer figurine meant to sit on a lady’s desk. The bright colors and the pose are what drew me. I hope you like it. I will try to write to you again soon.

He finished with the letter and sent it out to be mailed. He didn’t want Kalliope to know that his ship was in the Oban port just yet. He had something to do first. A surprise to get before he went to see her.
