She felt a bit nervous as she walked to the agreed upon meeting place. She’d received the letter that had asked her out on a date earlier that morning. To confirm she’d written back to Gael. Of course she had thought it tacky that he’d sent a note instead of asking her in person but he’d explained his reasoning in the letter. He was at work until late and didn’t want to keep her waiting long.

He leaned casually against the signpost as he waited for Kalliope to join him. He’d been pleased to receive her reply letter to his own. It had caused him to grin like an idiot the rest of the day which had gained him no small amount of jibed from the crew members. Even the captain had noticed and commented on it. He’d not given them the least bit of idea as to why he was like that though.

When she finally saw Gael she couldn’t help the smile that formed on her face. He was handsome. Even for a laborer. Perhaps it was his muscles that attracted her? Kalli didn’t think she was that shallow but she coulnd’t quite pin down what it was about the man that drew her in. After their long conversation the other night she found she was drawn to him. He’d taken the time to actually speak with her, ask her questions about herself and get to know her. It had been established that she had children and he did as well. Though his daughter had been adopted he didn’t see a difference.

When he saw Kalli coming closer he stood up straight, no longer leaning against the signpost. He smiled at her and offered a wave of his hand. “Hey there.” He called out before taking a few steps her way. And he wasn’t empty handed either. He’d gone back to his room to wash up before meeting her and on the way he’d stopped to get her some flowers. As he stopped in front of her he offered the small bouquet to her. “These are for you, Miss Kalliope.” He didn’t think terms of endearment were appropriate just yet.

When she noticed that he had flowers with him she couldn’t help but smile wider. Even after working all day he had found the time to pick out something for her. As they were given to her she took them and brought them to her nose so that she could smell them. The pleasant fragrance made her give a sigh. “These smell delightful. Thank you Gael.” She moved the bouquet so that it was placed in one arm to be held out of the way. “I have to admit I was surprised to have gotten your letter earlier.”

As Kalli smelled the flowers he reached up to steal the bloom off one and place it in her hair. It went well with the ornaments she already had. “You’re welcome, I thought you might enjoy them.” Even if they were a common thing to give to someone he wanted to show he was thinking of her. To her expressed surprise he lifted a hand to the back of his neck and rubbed slightly. “Oh yeah. I am sorry about asking in a letter. I was too nervous to ask last night.” He offered a chuckle of his own then. “I will be leaving town tomorrow though and I didn’t want to miss the chance. I hope you don’t mind.” He was worried she might be offended.

“You were too nervous?” She blinked at the knowledge before she giggled softly. “I see.” When Gael farther explained that he would be leaving town she wondered if the ship was to set off so soon. “Are you going back out to sea?” It was concerning to think that he might be gone for several months already. She was really starting to enjoy his company, even if it was only the second day.

“Sea? No.” He shook his head. “I’ll be traveling to Matori to be with my daughter. We finished up our work today and we have several days before we set out again.” It was usually how things worked for him. And he wanted to see Brexxa before he set out again. He had a gift for her anyways. “I thought I could spend my last night in Oba with you.”

“I see.” So that was it then. “That is very fatherly of you.” And was something she wasn’t used to. Ouen would never make time constraints like that to see the boys. He would always wait until his schedule was clear. He wasn’t as motivated was all. Kalli smiled at Gael. “I would be honored to spend the evening with you. What do you have planned?” She had to admit she was curious what this man would come up with.

“I never miss a chance to spend time with my daughter.” He nodded. As Kalli said she would enjoy spending time with him he stepped up beside her and turned so that he could offer her his arm. “Then I thank you, Miss Kalliope.” The man nodded his head again and motioned for her to walk with him. “If it’s not too much I thought we might take a walk down Merchant Alley to the park.” He’d prepared a picnic for the two of them with candle light. He knew it wasn’t much but he wanted to spend some quiet time with the lady.

So he wanted to walk? That wasn’t so bad. She took his offered arm and began to walk when he motioned and led the way. Kalli stayed close to his side and smiled. “A walk sounds nice. I’ve not been to a park in a long time either.” Considering she’d lived in a bandit camp until recently it would be nice to see the city streets again and the park was always refreshing.

“I’m glad you aren’t disappointed.” He held her hand in the crook of his arm as they walked along. “You mentioned that one of your sons came with you to Oba. Has he found work as well?” He figured speaking of their children would be a safe topic. He was aware that her sons were older than his daughter and that one had stayed behind with his father. “You said his name was Jax, right?” He wanted to be sure.

“Oh, yes.” She turned her head to look at him. “Jax is the one who came with me. He found some work with a noble family, working as an instructor.” He was more or less teaching little kids how to use a bow and arrow. As he son had complained about it in the morning she realized he was more or less babysitting. “He’s not thrilled with it but the money is good.”

“Well that is good.” He chuckled again. “Do you have hopes that your other son will join you as well?” He was curious about the relationship she had with her sons. Not only because he thought children were the world but because he wanted to know what family meant to her. If she treated her own children badly then she might not bat an eye about mistreating Brexxa.

“Oh no.. I think he’ll stay there with his father. Which is fine. He enjoys life there and I can’t be mad at him for it. We have been writing letters back and forth though.” She grinned as she spoke about her son. Despite the odd beginning to her family she loved her two sons very much. “I enjoy his letters when they arrive.”
