Title: The Beginning of a Nightmare Characters: Carminite, Aeridymite (NPC) Status: Complete
Summary: Carminite is reassigned, and he meets his new General. Word Count: 1079
Notes: Backdated, early January 2022.
-----
Reassigned.
He didn’t totally understand it, but Carminite had always been the type to roll with the punches. Whatever life threw at him, he never failed to adjust, adapt, and ultimately achieve victory over it in the end. That was true in every other aspect of his life, and while being a Negaverse agent was still new and presented many unexpected challenges, he thought that it applied to that as well.
Emphasis on ‘thought’.
Evidently that wasn’t the case. Maybe he’d spent too much time away? Maybe he failed to meet his quota too many times? Juggling a normal life while also fulfilling all his duties as an agent was tricky. He had a girlfriend, a dog, a job, and other personal interests, too. It was hard to make it all work and still have any semblance of balance. Something always had to give, and in this case maybe it was his life as an agent?
He still tried, though maybe that just wasn’t enough.
So he stood at attention, now in the presence of his new commanding officer, General Aeridymite, who’d done nothing but stare at him for the past five minutes. In the dim light of Negaspace Carminite could barely make out any notable features. Gaunt, almost sickly so, and pale, but that was about it. He wondered in brief if it was common for Negaverse Generals to look like that given the lack of sunlight here and all. The General seemed to sense his lack of focus and stood slowly, never breaking eye contact. And then he approached.
He sighed deeply, his expression one of curiosity mingled with a level of dissatisfaction and distaste.
“What to do with you…” he asked, clearly rhetorical, his voice clear in the still, silence of the room. “What to do…”
Carminite stared straight forward, still at attention, unsure what he was meant to do but keeping his face a blank slate. The rigidity of his stance only emphasized his exhaustion. After a rough, sleepless night at work he was summoned without notice and had now been standing stock still for several minutes.
“I suppose the easiest thing is to see your skills for myself.” The General continued speaking as though thinking aloud. “I’ve seen your file and it’s…” he curled his lip, “unimpressive, but your blade intrigues me. Shall we start with some youma?”
– [ ] – The small clearing that the General opted to take them to was unfamiliar to him. He could see the heart of Destiny City in the distance, which meant they were on the outskirts. Somewhere. He wasn’t worried about randomly getting murdered by this general, though the youma he summoned to test his “skills” were another story. Should they succeed in ripping him to shreds, there might not even be a body for anyone to find…
Which was his motivation to succeed, and succeed he did. One by one he hacked each youma into pieces. Though he didn’t get through this “test”, by the end of it he was covered in as much crud coming off the youma as his own blood, but he was alive and in one piece. Battered, but otherwise whole. The captain’s eyes were glazed over as he tried to focus on not passing out from his exhaustion. He was barely standing, breathing heavily, but once more was at attention before his new CO, arm up with his weaponed summoned because the General wanted to get a closer look.
“Fascinating,” he murmured. “Move it to the other arm.”
He did.
“Intriguing! Did that drain you a bit?”
“No, sir.”
“Good, good. So that won’t affect how often you can do that.” He touched the blade and felt its warmth, and he paused to look at Carminite.
The smile on his face was absolutely sinister, but it was just a flicker of the expression that Carminite caught from the corner of his eye. When next the General stood directly in front of him, he looked mildly pleased but perfectly pleasant.
“I’m curious how you’ll do in a fight with someone more sentient than that.”
A pale-blue swallow soon materialized in the General’s hands, which he expertly maneuvered while getting into a fighting stance.
– [ ] – “Your skill on the field is abysmal, Captain,” the General said, foot pressing down into Carminite’s bloodied chest. “We’ll start with combat training, hand to hand as well as practice with your weapon. I’ll get you whipped into shape in no time at all.”
He was dizzy from the blood loss, but did his best to focus. Thankfully, given the pain he was in, his whole body had practically gone numb, so it didn’t bother him too much what the General did to him at that point. As long as he eventually made it home, he’d be fine.
The General listed off a number of other things he intended to have him focus on. Nothing stuck, but Carminite was good about keeping his attention on the General. The foot pressing into one of his numerous open wounds was deep enough now that he could feel the pain radiating through. A sharp, nearly indescribable pain. He strained to keep himself from crying out in agony, his face moving through a few shades of red in his effort.
He managed to lay still, at least, but he winced.
The General saw, murmured something under his breath, then stepped away, leaving a few bloody boot marks as he went.
“Seems I might have overexerted you, Captain. Very well, that’ll be all for tonight.”
Being teleported back to Negaspace in his state caused Carminite to turn over and violently empty the contents of his already empty stomach. The General looked disgusted but didn’t comment. Instead he reached down and effortlessly heaved the Captain up, off the ground, and onto a nearby bed. He lacked bedside manners, but at least Carminite was now on a bed.
“We’re in the infirmary,” he said, lip curled as he wiped his hand off on the bed sheet.. “I’ll call someone to come treat you before you leave. Expect to hear from me in a week’s time. Be ready then. Understood?”
“Yes, sir.” He was barely audible, but the General seemed to hear him.
“Good.”
With that Carminite found himself alone, finally, and in truth he wondered if he would wind up succumbing to his injuries before someone came. He blacked out gradually, and as he went he found that only Seren came to mind and he felt a swirl of emotions overtake him.
Then he was out.

Title: Non-negotiable Characters: Carminite, Aeridymite (NPC) Status: Complete
Summary: Carminite fails an assignment. Word Count: 1037
Notes: Backdated, late May 2022.
-----
It had been months since he started working under General Aeridymite’s supervision, and he could honestly say that it was to his benefit. At least in the big picture. He was shaping up to be a decent fighter and had gotten more adept at using his weapon. He’d experienced more in the past several months than in his whole time in the Negaverse prior to his reassignment. Which, again, was a good thing.
Unless he took his health and safety into consideration, of course.
He was pressed beyond anything he’d ever experienced before in his life. There were little to no breaks, and the General expected perfection. Always.
So he was expected to repeat each and every exercise until he got it perfect. Every time. Resting was considered a reward, so the more he got used to the style of training the more seriously he took it. And the more seriously he took it, the more grave the exercise became until he failed again.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
The General was incredibly strict and made near-impossible demands, but Carminite’s progress was undeniable. And that was something that he always wanted–to be able to contribute to the Negaverse in some way, shape, or form. Beyond just powering up and meeting an energy quota, that is. So he did his best.
General Aeridymite saw this, acknowledged it. It was one of the reasons why he pushed so hard in the first place. If there was potential there, he would draw it out and hone it to the best of his ability. For Carminite? So far, so good.
There was just one more thing.
– [ ] – Captain Carminite was waiting, as instructed, inside an old abandoned building on the outskirts of DC. The General was good at finding dreary sites like this, curiously enough. Or was it that he was already aware of all the various sites he’d taken Carminite to for his training?
Not that it mattered.
He let his thoughts wander, for a moment, when the silence was suddenly interrupted by shrill screams.
General Aeridymite had just appeared, along with two other guests.
He immediately stood at attention, but his heart kicked right into its highest gear at the sound. He worked to steady his breathing, eyes looking straight ahead as he waited. Instructions were coming, and he had an idea what they might be.
“I have your assignment for tonight, Captain.” Carminite heard a thud, followed by a groan. His eyes moved to meet the General’s, questioning. As if aware of the unasked question, the General smiled slowly.
“Your assignment tonight is to bring me a starseed. In the interest of time I’ve found you one already. The other is purely for demonstration.
Carminite stiffened where he stood, fought down the natural instinct to demand that he stop. There was a part of him that didn’t totally agree with this aspect of the Negaverse, but it was something he knew he might have to do depending on who became his commanding officer.
He’d come to accept the inevitable, at least in theory. Now, presented with the reality, he wasn’t so sure.
“Watch carefully,” said the General, “it’s easy enough. Easier still with some practice.”
Carminite turned his attention to the General, as ordered. He was smiling, a vicious expression of delight. Truly, it looked far too easy. The General had simply reached into the woman’s chest, ignoring her protest and subsequent cries of agony. And then all at once she fell limp, and the General dropped the body like a sack of potatoes.
Carminite felt a wrench in his chest.
It wasn’t the first time he’d seen it done, but it always hit him the same way. Given his choice of profession, even if he’d come to terms with knowing that he might be put up to it, it just felt…impossible. Beyond him. A non-negotiable. He would have said “no” had it been an option.
But the General summoned him forward, and he stepped forward.
“See?” he said, presenting the small crystal to him in the palm of his hand. “Nice and easy. Now, you.”
Carminite set his sight on the other civilian. He was just a boy…possibly eighteen, but barely. He swallowed the lump in his throat and stepped toward him. The General wasn’t one for dramatics or wasting time, so he moved and quickly heaved the boy up, high enough off the ground that his feet weren’t touching, and shoved him at Carminite.
The Captain froze in place, green eyes locked on the boy’s.
“Captain.”
He could see the fear, could hear the silent pleading in them. He swallowed the lump in his throat and reached forward, for the starseed. For his part, the boy writhed where he was, suspended in midair. There was nothing more he could do. Carminite could see and feel the boy’s strength fading as he fought his hardest to break free.
A pointless struggle.
Soon, he could feel a radiating warmth against his cold hands, all he had to do was grab it and pull…
“I can’t,” he said after a long moment. He pulled his hand out, empty, and took several steps back, his stomach turning. He was so close to killing someone. So close. It was a point he could never come back from should he ever choose to go down such a path. And as long as he was given a choice, he never would.
The General narrowed his eyes, disappointed but somehow not surprised. Without any hesitation he reached and retrieved the starseed himself, then dropped the boy in much the same manner as the woman.
“Very well. That’ll be all for tonight.”
The General’s energy signature disappeared like a blip off a radar, and Carminite knew he was alone. Almost alone. He didn’t have to look to remember that there were actually two others with him. Two others who, a mere five minutes ago, were probably going on about their business as usual, not realizing that it would be for the last time. It didn’t seem fair, he thought.
But that was life.
“Some life.” He curled his lip as well, and teleported away. Someone would find the bodies soon, he was sure of at least that much.

Title: Strength for a Greater Purpose Characters: Carminite, Aeridymite (NPC) Status: Complete
Summary: Something's different about Carminite. Word Count: 719
Notes: Backdated, mid July 2022. Post youmaglia implantation.
-----
He couldn’t remember much of the previous meeting. His General had called him in for some reason; Carminite did as he was ordered. The area in the Dark Kingdom he’d been called to was unfamiliar, but that wasn’t out of the ordinary. Since he didn’t try to spend too much time there that applied to a lot of spaces. And then when his General finally showed up, he could very vaguely recall having a conversation, more of the same tone and topics he imagined. They sparred, probably.
Maybe.
He was sore, he knew that much, so sparring made the most sense, and he had the worst headache so he figured he must have been pushed to his absolute limit. That was normal, at this point, and he was used to it by now. He was fine with it, even. Dare he say grateful? It had honed his skills as a fighter, as an agent. It made him more effective at his job.
“This job,” he mused quietly, and was about to have a thought about how he might have to scale it back because his home life was starting to get affected, when his head throbbed suddenly, and he closed his eyes and fought down a grimace.
“Making faces at your General now, Captain?” General Aeridymite said in the usual, berating tone. The Captain stood at attention then, and forced his eyes open. When the General moved to stand in front of him though, through his peripheral vision he could see the man was smiling. It made his skin crawl.
Yet it was somehow a relief to see.
“Please! Please!”
The voice of a young woman cut through the silence that had fallen, and the General glanced behind him and dragged her by her hair to stand between them, the smile gone from his lips and replaced with scowl. Carminite's posture faltered slightly, and he turned his eyes to the woman.
She looked desperately between the two of them, tear-stained cheeks shining in the moonlight as she continued.
“My name is Pam. I have a husband and a young daughter. She just turned three–”
“Captain.”
He straightened out at that, and the voice of the woman fell into the background as he refocused on the General.
“If you would, please.”
Like a lamb to the slaughter, the General held her out to him. His eyes glazed over when their eyes met. She had the most curious purple eyes, he thought. Striking in their own way. They were terror-filled, sure, but beautiful all the same.
He considered the order, replayed the same scenario from just a couple of months ago in his mind. He remembered the decision he made then, and why he’d made it. He had a thought to question the order again, but again his head throbbed, and then he remembered the General’s dissatisfaction and the utter failure he must have been to Metallia in that moment, two months ago.
Finally, he thought, some clarity. Determination and some sense of pride–of wanting to contribute something to the Negaverse, to Metallia–swelled inside of him next, and without another thought he reached up and into the center of her chest, quickly and very effectively silencing her. Finally. He saw the agony in her eyes, saw the cry that got caught in her throat as he wrenched her starseed out of her.
The crystal was warm in his hand, he thought as he actually looked at the woman now, hanging limp from the General's grasp. When General Aeridymite dropped the woman’s body he blinked, refocused…and saw the smile return. He saw pride and satisfaction and the joy of victory.
Carminite offered the crystal to him, and he stashed it away with a wave of his hand.
“Good. Now, are you ready for your new assignment?”
He stood at attention again, arm back at his side and eyes looking straight ahead.
“Yes, sir.”
Slowly, and with a sinister smile, he said, “For Metallia, indiscriminately, and as many as you can.”
He felt his stomach lurch at the idea, and nearly had a thought to refuse when his head throbbed again, and he tightened his jaw to force down yet another grimace. His eyes glazed over then, and he turned the words over in his mind. Only two lingered, though.
For Metallia.
“Understood.”
