[ S ] To Ride A Limbara [ S ]

[- 602 words-]
[- Yael -]

For all the years she worked with her mother's Limbara, she never imagined such an opportunity would arise for her to finally ride atop the great beast. Sure, when she was a young little thing she practiced climbing the rough scales of the creature, who patiently allowed her to move up, over, and down again. It was a practice, always up, sit for a moment, then back down. As she grew, it became easier, until eventually she began to jump.

Jump, reach, grab, pull, slide, land.

Zayana laughed every time she made a successful bounce, amazed at her ability. The creature seemed patient as well, but also grew with her. Every time she thought she would finally catch up, the Limbara would tower over her once more. It was a bit of a game, but as Zayana grew out of her youthful stage, her frustration increased. Many of her elder sisters were already talking about riding a Limbara and weilding a bow. She felt envious, jealous even, and desired to be the first true rider to face the foolish Yaeli on their home.

It didn't help that she now also wanted to please their young Mystic, and felt a bit of shame for not being farther along. She was one of the first Elaria blessed to Alkidike mothers, and represented so much more than those who were simple blooms. Sure, they were important, but she was a sign of a continued future and a bloodline that would always contain the spirit of their ancestors. That was just as important, wasn't it?

Sometimes she questioned it, as she worked with her creature and her practice bow. She saw the looks the older Alkidikes gave her and her sister...reclusive Elaria who hardly came out of their own corner of the land. Sure, she met some of her sisters, but it was fleeting. It was only now, as she grew older, that she started building those bonds. She felt her absence, and noticed the looks of the elder Alkidike. They saw her as different, and she knew why.

It was her mother. Lumikani.

Zayana was not a fool, her mother was not the most like of the Alkidikes. She wasn't sure why, as both mothers didn't comment on it. So Zayana continued to observe from atop her mountain of a beast, watching and waiting for answers.

Today, she was high atop her creature, long legs helping her climb easily. There was no more growing between the two of them, which meant it was time to better bond. She needed to learn so much. She needed to work on directions,
on communicating and moving between the two of them. She needed to build an unspoken trust, so there was no need for words or reigns. Her mothers said it would be a tough ride for both of them, but if she continued to work she would build a bond like no other.

This creature was her future, and she needed to work hard to get there. Soon, she would have to worry about a weapon, so now was a time to get the basics down before she lost her arms. Direct with her legs, keep it subtle but clear.
This was something she would learn on her own, and hopefully it wouldn't be a painful process.

For the rest of the day, she worked hard to direct her creature. It was slow, it was painfully slow, but she made little progress. Others came by, her family and outside, but she ignored them and waved them off.

This was her journey, and she was ready to begin.

[ S ] The Power Of The Bow [ S ]
[ Class Affinity Solo ]

[- 934 words-]
[- Yael -]

She remembered growing up watching her mothers spar, their forms nimble and agile as they darted around their secret hideaway. Zandala did not favor close contact, but she was strong and tall and could hold her own against Lumikani. Lumikani was fast, so fast that Zayana would watch her mother with an open mouth as she darted around like a fly. She didn't have the reach, being so small and petite for an Aishan, but she made up for it with tenacity.

Growing up, she loved watching the spars, but not as much as she loved the quiet times she spent with Zandala. They would go out early in the mornings, when the fog and dew littered the clearings, no words needed between them as she tip-toed behind. All it would take was a twitch of her mother's hand for Zayana to understand that prey was spotted. Then, she would watch with baited breath as her mother crouched low, antennae twitching while pulling back her bow string without a sound.

The release was easy to miss, but the sound of the creature being struck never failed to elicit a gasp from the young girl. Zayana's fondest memories was cheering her mother on during each and every hunt, and grinning until her cheeks hurt as they brought home a meal as if they had gotten it together.

Those memories filled her with warmth as she looked down at the practice bow she had made, something crude and simple and by no means able of hunting efficiently. But it was precise in size that she knew the feel of a bow from being a young child. Before it even had a string, she practiced bending low, holding he breath and pulling her arm back as she aimed.

It wasn't perfect, but it was a way to go back to those fond memories of her childhood.

As she was brushing a wax on her mock bow one day, the wood worn from her fine tuning and the string tight like a real bow, she missed her fellow Elaria walking up. This was an older sister, a natural-bloom without any prayers. She was seen as a blessing for the entire tribe, a sign from the goddess of their value, and as a result she was often elevated like the rest. A cleared throught caught Zayana's attention as she turned, raising her brows as she looked up expectantly at the elder.

"Playing with that toy again, sister?" she said with a mocking tone, looking down with a small grin. Zayana let out a sigh before setting her tools down and standing.

"If by playing you mean maintaining, yes, yes I am..." She replied with a shrug, the older girl a bit put off that her teasing didn't work. She changed tactics, her face softening as she cooed at the younger girl.

"It must be so hard, to have a mother who is an outcast of the outcasts, your family must suffer so without the favor of the tribe..."

Zayana had heard it before, the whispers and the secrets. She knew Lumikani was seen in a negative light, her efforts in the war long forgotten when she seemed resistant to some of the more...extreme mentalities of the sisterhood. As an elaria, Zayana felt pulled in multiple directions, but she would always defend her family. And so, she clenched her teeth a moment before shaking her partially dyed hair.

The elder sister didn't do a great job of hiding her sneer at the sight.

Maybe she should dye it all black so they knew exactly where her loyalties were.

"I'll be getting my official bow once I earn my title as Blade. Until then, I'll make sure I'm practicing so I'm ahead of my lazy sisters who would rather frolic under the shadow of our great mother. I don't need her protection, I'll be her protector as I ride atop my Limbara."

Looking her elder up and down, she smiled again before waving her off, "Be a dear and use your time elsewhere. I've got work to do so I can surpass you."

Spinning on her heel, Zayana bent down to pick up her bow, ignoring the hiss of insult from the girl as she walked away. It was normal, to be respectfully looked down because of her poor mothers. Lumikani for her madness, Zandala for her prison. Zayana knew the truth. She saw her mothers as the partners they were, fighting to protect their family and their pride. No one could tell her that Lumikani or Zandala were fools.

They were fools.

Brushing her fingers against the worn wood of her practice bow, she slung it over her shoulder and took a deep breath. It was time for a hunting mission. Her goal was to sneak upon multiple creatures without being seen, before going to her practice range to shoot her bow at the painted marks on the trees.

Then, once successful, she would head home to help her family with their meal. Maybe she could drag Kanika to the hidden springs once more. These days, the two of them felt confident with their practice weapons to go out on their own. They were older now, ready to become blades and anxious to step into the roles of their mothers. Maybe one day they would have younglings of their own, cousins who they would train to be grand warriors to build on their legacy. For now, Zayana was more interested on getting her official bow and the title of Blade. She could worry about the rest of her future when it came.

[ S ] Mainlanders [ S ]

[- 967 words-]
[- Yael -]

Zayana was traveling closer to the Yaeli towns, scouting and working on her stalking skills. She knew she shouldn't be this far out, it was dangerous her matron had said. It was foolish her mystic had claimed. Zayana had been out before, with their mystic in fact, and she knew of dangers. She knew of the truth. But she still found her curiosity for adventure pushing her to go beyond the grounds. Maybe it was because she wanted to be an adult, to become a blade, that she felt a sense of invincibility.

Maybe it was because she had a deep dark seed of doubt fighting to come to the light and grow.

Lumikani had been open about her doubt of the sisterhood. Her mother had been here before their seed was planted, years before they even were considered possible. She had gone across the sea no older than Zayana was now, banished from her home and her family. Lumikani never spoke of her sisters, her mothers, or her sisterhood. But sometimes, sometimes Zayana saw her alone in the woods, looking into silence and thinking.

Those moments scared Zayana more than she liked to admit.

Her mother was different than the warrior fighter she recalled, reclusive and quiet. Zayana wonder if it was a calm before a storm, and feared for her mother. But she didn't dare speak of her fears, not even to her sister. She was scared of what she would find if she explored those thoughts, both about her mother and about herself.

Shaking her head, Zayana focused on her hunt. She was traveling around the settlements toward the great volcano, interested in tracking some Limbara to see if she could find any welps. She wasn't interested in catching any, but she wanted to report back to the sisterhood if there were young ones they could catch and raise. Soon enough she'd be leading a great Limbara charge...as soon as they had more to ride.

As she stalked, she heard the voices of others in the distance. A boisterous group of people who by no means were looking to hide. Her antennae twitched as they felt the vibrations in the air, and she slowed her pace and began some breathing exercises. She needed to be calm and quiet, seeing but unseen. It was time to shift focus from a scouting mission to see if she stumbled upon a group of Yaeli or something else.

As she moved closer, she tried to guess how many were there. This was all a great opportunity to practice, and she continued to remind herself that every time her heart rate started to increase. She knew the risk, but squashed it down under her mental reassurances. It was ok, they wouldn't hear her, she was quiet, this was a way to improve.

Once again, she paused to slow her heart and ensure she wouldn't make any mistakes, and slowly pulled out her bow just in case something happened. She recalled their cultures, their colors and their spirit from when she visited during the great festival. She wasn't the young green girl anymore, she didn't face them with fear or wonder. Instead, it was simple evaluation and curiosity.

As she approached the clearing, she guessed it was about 4-6. They seemed to have some beasts as well, and as she glanced out from the shadows, she smirked at how she was quite close. Five mainlanders, she could tell from their colorful skin and the stones that poked out from their bodies. Crystal crawlers, that was what some of her cousins said about the earthlings so long ago.

They didn't crawl around...and their crystals were quite pretty. No wonder her sisters liked to collect them. Zayana shivered...because just like her sisters, she knew some earthlings liked to collect things too.

Leaning back, she glanced around before quietly climbing a tree, resting her back against the sturdy trunk and just watching. Listening.

They seemed to be mainlander travlers, young and looking for an adventure. They were camping to take a quick break before heading closer to the volcano...either to find some new familiars or see about the rumors of the great scaled beast that kept the mountain warm. Looking them over, Zayana noted one with pale skin and blue hair, two dark brown ones with red hair, another brown one with green hair, and one with dark skin and light hair. They all seemed happy, content even, and worried not about the danger that sat above them.

Foolish, foolish mainlanders.

She took a moment to imagine what it would be like to strike, hidden in the trees and causing a fuss. They wouldn't know what hit them, and by the time they looked up she would be at another tree ready for another strike. If they seemed to attack back, she could flee easily. She knew these woods, knew what to avoid and how to fade into the shadows and disappear.

Another smirk fell on her lips, but she let it fade. They didn't do anything, they didn't sound like they wanted to harm anyone. In fact...they sounded like they were just having a fun time. Zayana looked at them carefully. She watched the way their faces expressed their feelings, the way they moved and the way they spoke with one another. They seemed...fine. Normal. Careless.

She then thought back to her mother, Lumikani. To her strange willingness to be open to the earthlings. To welcome them.

As the day continued to fade, Zayana watched them and forgot about her original mission. When they packed up to continue their trip (near sunset for reasons she didn't know), she too moved to head home. The entire way back, she continued to ponder. To wonder. Uncertain of the answers and how to get there.

[ S ] Growth Solo [ S ]

[- 916 words-]
[- Yael -]

[ Zayana has caught Lumikani again leaving Zenris in the dead of the night. Following after, she doesn't realize until they are far beyond their home that Lumikani is going somewhere different. She follows her, realizing their mother might be leaving for good this time and must make a decision that will impact her for years to come. ]

Why were they here? Zayana was asking this question for the past few hours as the moon sunk low and the sun rose high into the sky. They were gone well beyond the bounds of the Elaria camps, past the many Yaeli homes and keeping far away from others. Her monther had on a long cloak and moved quickly through the trees. Zayana followed from a distance, walking with her Limbara at a leisurely pace.

Did Lumikani know she was being followed? Normally, Zayana would say yes, but her mother almost seemed in a frenzy. She was woken up late in the night to hear her mother drift in, grab a cloak and leave. The only sign of her being there was the soft dirt that she tracked in on the floor...dirt that smells suspiciously like the soil around Elzira.

Zayana looked outside and realized Lumikani was leaving town, grabbed her limbara and took off. In hindsight, she really should have woken Kanika and Zandala...they would know what to do. Maybe it was fear she'd lose her mother, or fear she'd upset her sister who was working so hard as a blade. Either way, the excuses lingered in the back of her mind as they came upon a coastal city, the same one Zayana used to get a ship to the mainland all those years ago.

Lumikani was heading that way.

Putting her hands up to calm her Limbara, she told her to stay before rushing after her mother, keeping to the outskirts while she watched. Lumikani went to the pier, spoke with a sailor, exchanged some coin and jumped on a ship. It seemed the two had known each other, because there was no concern or questions asked.

Her mother was leaving.

Biting her lip, she snuck around a stall and stole fabric and a pen, quickly rushing back to her Limbara before she was caught and writing a note. It was in a code that she shared with her sister, a silly little game they used to play, but it was enough to know the message would be safe.

Lumi got on a ship. She's leaving. I'm going to try and talk her out of it...if I don't return...it means I'm going with her.

I'll send word as soon as I can
.

Zayana paused in her writing, before adding.

Please don't be mad. I'm sorry.

She whispered words and sent her familiar off, it knowing to run home as it was taught early on. Hopefully, Kanika would get the letter swiftly. Hopefully she would be home shortly after to sooth her family that it was nothing at all.

Spinning on her heel, she held her chin high and walked out in the sunlight. Her skin was sweating from the heat, or so she told herself, and not the gasps and stares of the foolish Yaeli who were scared of their own shadows. Walking over to the sailor at the boat, she called out with a strong voice, "You. Where is this ship going?"

He jumped, before looking her up and down with suspicion before shaking his head.

"An adventure, lass. To a land unknown but found on a treasure map..." He held up the map, and Zayana moved closer to look it over. This paper...her mother had found it one day in the ruins to the south of their hideaway. She looked it over at night, spoke in hushed whispered to Zandala but mostly kept it to herself. And on the map, to the east of what looked like their island, was another with a circle around it.

New lands. Lumikani was running away to new lands. Where none could follow.

Zayana was hit with a painful punch to the gut, but no one had attacked her. Instead, she struggled a moment to breath, the thought of her mother leaving actually becoming a reality.

"This...can't be real, can it?" She asked out of breath, and the man shrugged.

"...tis why we're going. To see if it is real. In fact, we're leaving as soon as my boys get back with supplies. We've got our map."

They were leaving and she had no time to go talk her mother into coming back. But she knew, deep down, her mother didn't want to come back...nor would she be welcome. Hands sweating as she wrung them together, Zayana looked back toward where she knew her home was, her family, and wondered if she should go. They needed to know...but...

Turning back, she looked to her mother. If that ship left, no one would know where she would go next. Zayana had to follow, so she could tell them once able. So she could provide the story. Lumikani made it clear...she wasn't going to bring anyone along...otherwise everyone would be there with her.

Biting her lip, Zayana took a breath through her nose and let it go. A weight fell off her shoulders as she nodded, determined. It was time to step into her own story, to make her own decision. It was time to go on an adventure and see who was right...her matron...or her family.

"I'm going with you." she said loudly, stomping past as she adjusted her bow, not listening to his reply.

She had a mother to speak with, and a cabin to claim. It was going to be a long ride, and even longer before she figured out if this was the right choice to make. But she was ready to make it.
