Mid-Season Harvest Festivals

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Prompt
With so many inhabitants of Tendaji still working the lands, it's common that a festival or party is held to celebrate the transition to a new season. With summer in swing, it's about time to celebrate again. This transition goes from cultivating the land to full-harvest, so many hold celebrations to thank the gods for rain, earth, and successful growth of their plants.

Be it on Tendaji where the Earthlings celebrate thanks for their crops and land, or the Aishans thank their great mothers for prosperous hunts, or even Kahikinan where they celebrate a transition from the heavy rain season, all of Tendaji has reason to gather during the summer months.

[ For this prompt, find someone to celebrate a the change of a season wherever your character is. If your character is alone, now is a great time to consider the transition of the season versus the transition of your life. ]

[Zayana 1]

Zayana was excited. She somehow was able to get her mother to leave the isle and travel to 'scout' the local waterbreathers. That meant she could show her mother the beauty and value of working with such an amazing race of individuals. She told her 'contacts' that they were coming, and had discovered that a festival was occurring deep in the swamps. That meant they could observe the local practices and maybe even benefit from them.

She worked hard to hide her excitement as they approached, able to come near the water thanks to the peaceful interactions with the Kahikinans so far.

[Lumikani 1]

Lumikani had no idea what made her agree to this. Maybe it was the fact her daughter had nagged her for weeks, if not months, to get away from the isle. Maybe it was the other sisters suggesting a little bit of reconnaissance. Lumikani suspected that too might have been influenced by Zayana. Either way, she was trudging through the swamps for the first time since they arrived on the island years before.

Had it always been this muggy and sticky? She wasn't sure what her daughter saw in such a location, but she agreed and here she was approaching a camp from the swamp water breathers. The ones with the weird face growths.

[Zayana 2]

As she moved through the reeds and into the shallows, she was surprised at how quiet the event was. The Menehune were around, but they seemed to be quiet and appreciative of the harvest. They had many dishes and fish in the area, but no dancing, or music, or anything. Zayana felt her excitement deflate a little bit, and she turned to her mother.

"Maybe most of the festivities take place under the water?"

[Lumikani 2]

She noticed her daughter's excitement all but disappear as they arrived, and wondered exactly what she expected. Did she think they'd be jumping out of the water like fish moving to catch flies? Looking back, she found appreciation in the calm, and curiosity in the beads and resources they traded. Maybe she could get something to take back...she did need some new beads for her dreads.

"Seems like the water is a bit shallow for that?" She replied with skepticism in turn, before adding, "Maybe this is the festival? They seem to be appreciating the harvest?

[Zayana 3]

She huffed, actually huffed at her mother's response, before bending to dip her fingers into the water. She took a moment to imagine celebrations in the murky depths, the way the muck would part and weave around. Yeah, it wasn't a very appealing thought. Maybe she was projecting a bit. Standing again, she nodded to move toward a newly erected platform. It seemed the fish folk were preparing for land walkers these days.

"Yeah, they tend to work hard and harvest, so from what I was told this is meant to be a feast of the first main catch."

[Lumikani 3]

It made sense that they would celebrate with a meal, but the calm energy was much different than many of the other ones they hosted. As they moved to where the food was, Lumikani noticed that most of the locals seem to avoid or ignore them, as if they weren't used to meeting with others. It was curious, but she didn't get any sense of danger from them. They simply seemed keen to keep apart from the outsiders.

Bending to grab some large, grilled fish, she stepped back to give space out of respect, before turning to her daughter.

"When we said scout, that didn't mean mingle."

[Zayana 4]

Grabbing her own food, she warmly thanked the Menehune who gave her the cold shoulder. Shrugging, Zayana hoped that she'd find her contact and at least have someone to talk to. For now, she was content with the distant acceptance from the locals, who some did seem to recognize her from previous visits.

As she nibbled on the food, she gave her mother a sly grin before she caught sounds in the distance. Finally, it sounded like some fun!

"Let's go check it out!"

[Lumikani 4]

She kept quiet as they moved away from the food, noticing how her daughter avoided the comment. Clearly, Zayana intended for Lumikani to come along under false prentenses. Shaking her head, she kept close and eyed the Menehune. At least she would do her scouting to make sure they were no threat.

So far, they seemed keen to keep away from them, which was fine by here. They also didn't seem to have any weapons, which was abnormal. Most Earthlings and Aishans carried their weapons around at all time. Here, this group seemed to just be farmers and merchants.

"Is this the biggest settlement for this tribe?"

[Zayana 5]

"Oh yes, this is the biggest...but it's pretty spread out over the area, since they live in the waterways and all..." she replied off handedly, moving through the brush until they got to the source of the noise. Pausing, she watched as younglings raced around, laughing as they were hidden away from their distracted parents.

With so much energy, they couldn't fall into the calm of the Menehune, so they needed to exhaust it. It seemed playing and celebrating was the way to do it.

Zayana felt a smile cross her face, her heart warming.

"...do you think we'll see blooms soon?"

[Lumikani 5]

The younglings were much different than the adults, full of life and energy and spirit. Lumikani was a step behind her daughter as she watched. They seemed to play and dance and celebrate, as any child would.

"It is early, but close to the time when we first saw blooms from Elzira. So it's possible we may see them...or we may not. Elzira was new, we had never seen a tree bloom new Aishans."
PostPosted: Tue Dec 08, 2020 6:04 pm

[Zayama 6]

"But it's still possible..."

Zayana turned to her mother, her face serious, "If we do see blooms, I'm going to pray to the tree...just like you and Momma Zan did, i want to help raise the next generation of Aishans."

She didn't want to just protect the tree, she wanted to protect and grow the tribe. Even if she didn't have a partner, she'd pray.

[Lumikani 6]

Her daughter's determination was inspiriting, and Lumikani evaluated Zayana to make sure she knew what was to be expected, "Younglings are not easy. They need to be watched, and trained, and raised right." She said softly, looking back to the children.

"Especially the first blooms. They are the future of their tribe...it's a heavy burden." She wondered what might have happened had they waited. Would Zayana and Kanika have grown up differently. More relaxed, more wild?

[Zayana 7]

"I know...and I'm ready."

She too looked at the children, smiling before taking her mother's hand, "It is my role that makes me want to do what you did. To raise a child like I was raised. To be the future we need, to be strong and proud to be an Aishan. I want a child who will protect a generation."

Turning away from the children, Zayana let out a little laugh, "I know you're not comfortable. We've eaten, so let's go lurk in the shadows so we have something to report..."

[Lumikani 7]

Pride filled her as she listened to her daughter, and she squeezed the hand back that was offered. Yes, Zayana was on the right path, and Lumikani would support her if she wished to go seek an audience. The girl was a bit curious, but overall a strong Aishan well worth leading the next generation.

She couldn't wait to meet her granddaughters.

Turning, she headed back into the shadows, mind shifting to focus on the task of getting as much information as she could to report back to the tribe. So far, she assumed it would be as Zayana said...the water breathers were peaceful traders, and little threat to the growing tree.
