Wild Encounter

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Prompt
Tendaji is filled with a wide array of wildlife, some friendly and some a bit dangerous. It's rare that an inhabitant of the world will spend a day without encountering a wild creature in passing, be it from hunting, traveling, or even taking care of a pet. The creatures of this world only seem to add to the colorful experiences that Earthlings, Aishans, and Kahikinans have each and every day.

[ For this prompt, we want you to pick one (or more) fauna in Tendaji and have your character encounter them in some way. Maybe it's catching a new pet, or animal watching, or maybe it's a hunting trip. Take some time to explore the flora and fauna thread and create a story around your character's experience with the creature(s). ]

After a few days of traveling north, Lumikani had tasked her daughter to go out and catch some game. The Alkidike mother was scouting their path ahead, searching to make sure it was safe and their boat was there. Zayana needed to get enough for the last leg of the trip, and so she went hunting.

Right away, she decided to avoid the waters. From what she learned from the locals, big creatures loved to lurk in the murky depths. Because she wasn't as attuned as the Menehune, she would likely not spot the creatures until it was too late. And she'd rather not face dealing with it pulling her underwater.

Instead, she grabbed her bow and looked out above the reeds. There, she saw bugs darting around. They were brightly colored and seemed to flash in the sunlight. Their wings made a buzzing sound she could hear from where she stood, and they seemed quite large. Zayana estimated that some of the larger ones would span from fingertip to elbow if she held them up. It was a logical choice to hunt with them being up and away from the depths of the marshes.

These creatures were something she was familiar with, having grown up on such delicacies, and therefore trusted they'd make great food. The challenge would be that they moved quite quickly and darted in different directions. She'd need to time her shots and predict the movements, something that would be quite a challenge in the end.

Pulling back her bowstring, she took a calming breath and looked out across the marshes. She saw a large one dart out and tracked it with keen focus. Eventually, she caught a small trend, and with that she let loose the arrow as it soared across the distance. With the satisfying thwack sound, the Pinunao fell with a splash.

Oh shoot, it fell into the water. Letting out a groan, Zayana rushed through the marshes, avoiding the water before coming to the edge where the arrow and the bug moved across the surface. Brightly colored wings twitched in an effort to fly, but it was out of luck. It would eventually succumb to the arrow, as the shot was nearly perfect. The only problem was that Zayana would need to go into the water to grab it, and it was making quite a fuss on the surface.

Looking around, she didn't see many other creatures in the space. The water was calm, almost as if things were avoiding it. The only movement was the violent ripples caused by the Pinunao's struggles.

Zayana wasn't a fool.

No, there was a reason other animals were avoiding the area. Thank the great mother that she had spoken to the locals and heeded their warnings. Instead of jumping in, she decided to wait and observe.

Sure enough, out of nowhere a shadow seemed to push the marsh waters up and out in a massive spray. Large, bulging teeth opened around the struggling bug as the body heaved behind the mouth. In the blink of an eye, the mouth and the Pinunao were back underwater, and a wave of scales and armor followed in an almost beautiful movement. After a few more seconds, the tail pushed the rest of the body under and then the water was smooth and empty once more.

Zayana felt her mouth open in awe, her eyes bright and her head shaking in wonder. This creature was massive, and she was sure it was the king of the waters. No wonder the Menehune avoided them and corralled them away from their camps.

As bits of her bow floated to the surface of the water like fallen twigs, Zayana moved back and turned, her eyes looking out for a new pray and her brain telling her to get away from the danger. Maybe she could find another bug flying above land, or one of the small frog-like creatures she saw hopping around on two legs. If anything, there was always birds...but it took more time to prepare them for meals.

Walking back through the marshes later, Zayana had a few of the Pinunao over her shoulder. She made sure to hunt them in a location where she trusted she could grab it, well away from the underwater beast. Arriving at the camp, she began to prepare them before her mother returned. Hopefully she'd have it all ready and waiting and show her mother she was well on her way to becoming a functioning adult. Well, she already was, but man she really wanted to please Lumikani.
