[ Zayana 1 ]
Even now, months after they had arrived to what they now knew was Kahikina, Zayana couldn't tell if it was reality or a dream. When she stepped on that ship to try and drag her mother home, she never imagined the chain of events it would unlock. Before she had a chance to talk her mother out of it, the ship took off to the east. They sailed for weeks in uncharted waters, she was sick as none other and feared for her life. They were away from the eyes of Elzira, and Zayana feared for her life and that of the other sisters who were on this ship. Last time she sailed, it was toward a land protected by Aisha.
This time, it was into the unknown.
Would they even find the land listed on the old map? Would it be safe? Just as she was about to give up and demand they turn back, land was sighted. A large island sprouting up from the sea, lush and covered with blues and greens. They landed off a beach, where trees sprouted out of soft sands and colors of all sorts peeked up from the beaches. It was as if there were animals swimming nearby, and as they explored they found muddy marshes, sparkling rivers, and creatures they had never seen before.
It would take weeks until they finally met the Kahikinans, unbelievably when one sprouted right out of the marshy waters.
Zayana was stunned at the discovery, along with most of the earthlings who lingered around. The other Aishans, however, cared not as they disappeared for another few weeks somewhere beyond the muds.
Left alone, Zayana let herself fall into the wonders of this new race, of their water breathing gills and their colorful scales. They were peaceful, they had no concept of war or magic, and she grew attached to these people. They were different...non-judgemental...simple.
So when her mother finally returned to pull her away, she hesitated and begged for Lumikani to wait, until finally she agreed to head north with her mother.
"Where have you all been? You've missed so much!" she cried out like a youngling as they stomped away from the underwater settlements.

[ Lumikani 1 ]
She'd call it unbelievable if it wasn't her own bloom. Lumikani had hoped, had preyed that her plan would work and her partner and children wouldn't realize until she was gone. She knew it would hurt them, knew they would grow angry, but deep down she believed this was the best option. Action now, seek forgiveness later. As she prepared for her trip with others of similar minds, she almost felt like her younger giddy self. She was excited, hopeful, ready to step up and change her destiny.
She was ready to atone for her mistakes, her foolish desires as a young girl who didn't realize what she had. She realized the irony of her decision, how it would alienate her current family just like her exile alienated her original one.
Her shock was clear when Zayana slammed the door open on the ship, and she had to make sure that her daughter didn't see her plans and unravel them.
She kept her intents secret, avoiding her daughter even and letting her get to know the Earthlings on the ship. Instead, she hid away with the other Aishans and planned, plotted over the map that started this all. She made no comment about the fact her daughter seemed to grow familiar with the earthlings, instead focused on ensuring this was a success.
As soon as they landed, her and the other Aishans planned to stay with the group as they explored the area. They waited for the right time to disappear. It was when the first contact occurred that a distraction played in their favor. The small group of Aishans snuck out and were not followed, heading north where they hoped they could find their new home.
When they found it, Lumikani left the others to secure the area and returned to drag her daughter away. It seemed Zayana had made friends, and while Lumikani wouldn't comment, she did grow frustrated when the spirited girl almost refused to leave.
"They will be here when we get back, Zayana. It's time to go."
Zayana was the daughter she didn't bond with as much, so maybe in hindsight this was a good opportunity for the two. She knew if Kanika were here, she'd be open to listen. Had she left Zayana behind, she might never understand.
Now that she was here, she had to understand.

Zayana sensed her mother was serious, at least more serious than normal. She hadn't spent so much time with her mother, not in recent years. The last few months of travel had been...straining. It was awkward, stumbling around to try and understand why her mother was doing this. Why run away? Why steal a seed? Why travel with the others into the woods and disappear.
Lumikani was such an unknown, but she was still Zayana's mother.
As they moved deeper into the brush of the woodlands around the waters. Zayana looked around at the lands, surprised to see such life in the seemingly water-filled world. The underwater creatures never came out this far, they warned them to avoid the deep grasses for the creatures that lurked in there.
Based on the weapons they carried, Lumikani must have already hunt down a few, and Zayana wasn't worried. They were warriors, and a few beasts were nothing.
"And will you be back? Where did you go, where are we going?"

Lumikani continued to trudge through the swamps, comfortable with the path she took. It was well worn, but not from the sisterhood. It seemed to be a hunting path for a local fauna, but she wasn't very concerned. It seemed most of the dangerous creatures lived in the waters or came out at night - and as long as they were careful to not fall into the swamps they'd be fine. Eventually, they'd make a travel path from here to wherever they determined to set up a dock.
Lumikani wondered briefly how much they changed this world, just like they did Yael all those years ago.
Shaking her head, she looked back at her daughter as they carefully moved through the brush, north and away from the others.
"I don't expect to travel much anymore...not unless I must." She responded softly to the question, before adding, "I'm taking you to our new home...we've found a place to settle...somewhere we can be safe."
And hopefully, she thought, find comfort and blessing from their great mothers.

The young prentice was thoughtful at the reply, her focus back on her mother and curiosity filling her being. So they were going to settle here in Kahikina? Seemed likely, considering they were fleeing. The question was, where would they go and why did they need to be safe?
Well, they were fleeing from the Elaria camp. Zayana was a bit remourseful about leaving her sisterhood and her mother tree...but she valued her family too much to let her mother flee. That being said, half of her heart was across the sea where her sister and mother were left.
She wondered if they would love this place as much as she did.
Her feet began to sing a bit more into the mud as the traveled further north, and the silence was a bit too much.
"You said somewhere safe. Why aren't we safe where we are?"

She paused to take a break, pulling her daughter to the side where some solid ground was. It was clear enough they could recognize any dangers in the distance, and was wide enough to rest. Pulling out a water, she passed it to her daughter and encouraged her to drink.
This would be a great place to discuss what Zayana so wished to speak on.
"You've been spending some time with the fish folk, have you?" She started, showing some slight interest as she looked out in the fading light.

She didn't realize how thirsty she was until she began to drink the water. It was refreshing against the humidity of the swamps, so alike and yet so different from Yael. Moving to rest, she took some time to stretch her legs and ensure she wouldn't be soar when they took off the next day. Because of that, she was startled when her mother asked the question.
Turning, eyes bright, she slowly smiled as she continued her stretches.
"Oh yes, I had a chance to meet some on the beach and even near the rivers. They are so colorful and friendly...and innocent too."

It was good her daughter was traveling to see the fish folk, it was valuable information that could be provided to the new tribe. They needed to know their neighbors and judge if they'd eventually be a threat to their future in Kahikina.
"Innocent? How so?"
The earthlings were innocent, until they decided to play games. Everyone was innocent as a youngling until they had a weapon in their hand.

Zayana paused a moment at the question, looking at her mother for a moment. It was a simple question, but did she ask in case she was scouting an enemy. That couldn't be right, because they fled the bloodthirsty sisterhood. Maybe her mother was asking to see if they were safe. She did say they were heading to 'safety'.
"They are like the opposite of Aishans...they don't prepare for war, but live off of trading between their different settlements. Those on the ocean lounge around all day. It's like they've never fought with each other here...much different than the Earthlings."

It seemed they had made the right choice following the map. Sure, they assumed that there wouldn't be anyone here, but being on a peaceful land meant they could focus on their true goal. To cultivate the seed of Elzira. Soon enough, Lumikani would let her daughter know, but for now she was focused on understanding the potential threat.
"How do you know they don't fight?".

"Well, they don't really have magic or weapons like we do. They seem to use it more for hunting. Instead of fighting for land, they evolved to live specifically in their regions. They don't seem keen on going much farther than where they know...or at least those who don't wish to explore."
The river fish lived in the river, the swamp in the swamps. The sea fish didn't do too well in the fresh water. It was all so fascinating to the war-focused Elaria.

So curious a thought that the water-breathers here were content to just settle. It was nothing like the earthlings on Tendaji, or the Extremists on Yael. If it truly were as her daughter said, and Lumikani doubted her daughter would lie about this, than they had the best chance of survival.
As long as no one rushed to follow them...they would be able to grow a tree to protect this new land.
Lumikani made to stand, they had to make some moves before nightfall.
"I am glad to hear that they are not a threat. We shouldn't be much of one to them either."

Zayana was reassured that her mother dropped the topic. She had grown to adore the strange underwaterlings that lived in this island. They were so pretty, and petite, and had such rich stories that were different than any she had ever heard. It would be a delight to get to know them more and just escape for a chance.
"Mother, where are we going?" she finally asked, her curiousity back on the topic now that they were moving again.

Lumikani smiled at her daughter as they moved further into the swamplands. They had a ways to go, and would need to rest a bit, but they were on their way toward their future. For the first time in a long time, the wearly old Alkidike was feeling a sense of peace and optimism.
"There is an isle across the river where we've set up camp. It's away from the locals, so we are safe from discovery. There's something I'm anxious to show you, but we should only speak about it once we are there. Trust me, Zayana. We're finally safe.."
And truly, it felt as if they were.
