A New Home & Family

The tribe was in a period of mourning for one of their own, a sweet Healer named Ahuva who was well known, well loved, and always seemed to be there whenever she or her special powers were needed by others. Her death was one that came to a shock to everyone, a freak accident it was being called, as the woman had merely gone out to fetch some water from a nearby spring after all. It was a chore that many, even some of the Younglings, had done on many occasions in the past since setting up camp in this particular location only this time around a venomous creature had been at the spring as well. It had been some time after she went out to fetch the water that someone else went in search of her, finding her collapsed by the spring but by then it was too late for anything to be done for her. It was a cruel enough fate for her to pass so young, more so though because of the youngling that she left behind. The young boy, Makani, wasn't only of the Wind Tribe either despite the fact that he lived in the lands of Sauti among the people. He was also half Ice Tribe on his father's side, a powerful hunter that spent most of his time in Zena, though from time to time he did visit.

A missive had been sent via a type of messenger bird to the man, to tell him what had happened, and the note back had said he was on his way. Not all of the Ice Tribe was as nice as Makani's father was when it came to the Wind Tribe, it was amazing what the power of love could do. When he did arrive where the villagers were making camp at long last Makani knew it long before anyone pointed it out him in a vocal manner. The sound of the man's footsteps was a sound well known the boy's sensitive ears, as was the scent of him, something that was far different from that of the Wind Tribe people due to the vastly different lands they lived in. Makani was on his feet instantly, racing forward toward the man, nearly tripping over his own feet as he went, "Papa!" He cried, throwing himself against the man, clinging to his legs, face buried against them as his sightless eyes started to pour tears that he'd been holding back now that his beloved father was finally here.

Instantly Herluin was sweeping the sobbing boy up into his arms, hugging him tightly to his chest while being mindful of the two toned spines on his son's shoulders, "It's alright now my little Makani, I'm here now, it's going to be alright." The man said, hugging him close. While Herluin wanted to cry himself, to lose his dear lover Ahuva so suddenly, it was heart breaking, but he knew that Makani needed him, he had to be here for his son, and help him through his grief before he worried about his own, "It's alright, I'm here for you, I always will be, my sweet little Makani." The man murmured over and over again, soothing the boy, helping his tears to slow, and for the boy to fall asleep in his arms. It would be a long road to get him back to being the smiling, happy child that he'd once been but Herluin meant to give him all that he needed to get back there. While he would never get over his mother's death completely he could at least get back on his feet, something that he and Makani both would have to do, together.

Makani's Puppy

It was a soft, whining sound that alerted Makani that something was off nearby. It was the sound of something small and something young, almost like a newborn crying and yet not at the same time... something young but not a tribesman, that much he knew for certain. He was curious though what was making the sound. He knew he shouldn't wander that far from home, not without his Papa, but he had to know what it was. What if something was in trouble after all? He knew that he should probably wait for papa, he knew his sister wouldn't ccome along after all... but Papa... he was out hunting, wasn't he? Because he was he knew that he couldn't just wait, the cries sounded so weak and it was something that was actually a little scary to him. What if what was crying died? He didn't want that, didn't want anyone else around him to die.

Hurrying along toward the sound that only he seemed to notice at the moment Makani found hismelf stumbling from time to time, not used to moving around through snow. Zena was so different from Sauti, so cold, and so strange, but he had to get used to it since this was where Papa lived. Continuing his way forward the boy suddenly gave a squeak, stumbled, and went rolling end over end down a hill, landing in a heap, "Owwie..." He murmured, sitting up, rubbing his hands against his head for a moment. As he sat there the sound of whining seemed closer, much closer, and he forgot about his pain so that he could crawl toward it. Reaching his little hands out he grasped around and then paused when his hands brushed against something small, fluffy, and warm, "Ahhh... hello?" He murmured, moving his hands around, realizing that whatever it was was an animal. Small, furry, and it had... were those wings? Well not wings yet, they were covered in soft feathers only, and... well, whatever it was, it seemed happy to see him as it crawled into his arms.

Giving a smile Makani pulled the creature closer, not sure what it was but knew that like him it was little and it was all alone, "It's going to be alright now, Makani is here. I will take care of you." He said, hugging the little one. After a while, as the cold started to settle into his form, he pushed to his feet, "Come on, we should go home. You probably need to get warmed up and to eat something just like me, huh?" He said to the squirming bundle of fluff in his arms. It might take a bit, especially with the fall down the hill, but he meant to get the two of them back home to where it was warm and safe... and maybe he could get his sister to help him out with finding food for the baby... whatever it was. Maybe his big sister would know? It had to be something from Zena because he'd never come across anything that felt or sounded like this in Sauti, "I wonder what you are... once I figure that out we will figure out what to call you, alright?" The one in his arms gave a little 'wuff' sounds, as though talking back to him.

Giving a chuckle Makani nodded, "You're cute." He said, hugging the fluffy critter as he made his way slowly but surely toward home, able to tell which way he was going by the sounds and scents around him, knowing exactly what his place smelled like, a strong scent due to what his Papa's job was. The moment he was home he started inside, calling out for his sister, hoping she would be up to helping today even if they weren't on the best terms...

Waiting For Lusala

Makani was starring out over the area before him... or at least appeared to be, his eyes were actually open wide at the moment, though try as he might to will them to work they never did. It was something he was used to, he'd been born this way after all, but it didn't mean that he wasn't curious about the things that he was missing. What was it like, the world that was laid out before him at the moment? What exactly did his family look like, his friends, things like that he was rather curious about. There was only so much that he could learn through touch, especially with those that wouldn't let him inspect them with his hands, those like his sister. He could only infer from the movements, voices, and such from those sorts of people. The other thing that he was really curious about was the entire idea of colors since he'd been teased a lot about his 'strange coloration' when he was little. From what he'd gathered that something about him was really different from the rest of the Ice Tribe, something they felt was important, but what it was, that was something that was lost on him. Colors in and of themselves were a concept that were beyond his understanding since he'd never before been able to see the things he was teased about.

In the long run though it seemed a bit petty now, the fact that he was being teased about something that to him didn't even exist. It hurt when he was little but it just seemed silly. No matter though, what those people thought of him didn't matter. What mattered was that there were those that loved and cared for him despite his blindness, it was just one of those things that he found himself wondering about from time to time. One of his hands lifted up, resting it on the scarf that he was wearing, wrapped around his neck at the moment. He let his fingertips stroke against the soft fabric lightly before he took hold of it, lifting it up, inhaling the wonderful scent of Sauti that still clung to it. The halfbreed boy let his hazy, yellow eyes sink shut as he enjoyed the scent and the thoughts that it brought to mind. After a moment of silence he finally said, "I... miss Lusala." They were hushed words that were meant only for the one that was currently standing at his side, that being his sweet, wonderful Rae. The Raptrix was always there, his most stalwart of friends ever since he'd first found her as a little puppy. She was the one he knew he could rely on the most, save for his father and sister, though it really was a shame that she didn't really talk. If she could talk she would be the most perfect of companions. It would make him feel a little better about himself too since talking constantly to his furry friend likely made him appear crazy to anyone that happened by when he was doing so.

Leaning into the side of his warm, fluffy raptrix he buried his face against the back of her neck and smile weakly before he said, "I know he is busy but... I... just wish that he would visit with us again." He recalled what Lusala had said to him when they met some time ago, that people forgot about Lusala when he left them behind to go to another village to sell his wares. It made him wonder if Lusala was the same way, had he forgotten about Makani in the way that people tended to forget about Lusala? It was a sad thought but one that he was sure was altogether possible. Lusala traveled from place to place, in new villages all the time, always making new friends, so why would he spend his time thinking about someone that he spend one day with? He knew that he thought a lot about Lusala but it was because he had been so kind to him in that time. It really was something that meant a lot to him when he was younger. He had promised his Lusala that he wouldn't forget about him and he wouldn't, even if Lusala didn't remember him he would remember him!

Pushing himself away from his pet he gave her a bit of a smile and said, "I think that it would be nice if he would come back and visit us again. I want to know how he's been, where he's been, what he's done." He said to Rae and in reply the raptrix gave a rumbling sound in her throat. Makani gave a chuckle in throat, scratching her under the chin, "Yeah, he will probably be back." She said, as though she was able to understand what it was that the Raptrix was saying. Something that caused her to give a huffing sound in response, not having meant that at all but if it perked up her boy then she would allow him to make up what she was saying as he went.

The huffing sound made Makani laugh that much more before he motioned to her, "Come on, we should probably start toward home." He said, knowing that they couldn't just stand here all day waiting in hopes that Lusala and his father would reappear, "We will go for another walk tomorrow and see if he makes an appearance." He knew it was probably silly of him to check for Lusala so often but he just couldn't help it, he wanted to see him again! Shaking his head he started forward away from where they had been standing for a time, sighing as he went.

He just had to keep holding out hope that he was going to see his friend again. He believed in Lusala, he would come back, he said that he would. He just had to keep an eye out for the news that the merchants had come back that was all. Once he heard that he would be the first one in line to see them! Though he couldn't help but to wonder about what his father would do, he had spent a lot of time with Lusala's papa after all. He supposed that they would see when the pair of them came back, maybe his father would go and play cards with the man again? He sure had been practicing since last they'd met after all. He bet that his father missed the man just as much as Makani missed Lusala, as such it would be great all around when the merchants returned.

What Comes Next

After the meeting that he'd had with his new friend Oggie, Makani was feeling a lot better about... well, everything. He felt as though, with enough work on his part, that he was going to be able to figure out the strange power that he was brushing on, and maybe, if he was lucky, he'd figure out exactly what it was too. He felt as though he was bordering on learning something important, something special, and he just had to continue to strive ever forward. Soon enough he was going to figure it out and he felt as though he would be opening up a whole world of possibilities. The problem being that at the present he really had no idea what it was that he was trying to figure out. All he knew was that he was slowly figuring out how to sense the world around him through... well, whatever power it was that he'd stumbled upon.

That was what Makani felt would be the the most difficult part of this entire process, trying to figure out from where the power originated, and how to really use it. He almost guessed that it might be some sort of magic but if that were the case he was kind of out of luck as far as getting aid from his family was concerned. His father was a hunter whole wielded a spear while his older sister was a dancer, neither of them used a lick of magic as far as he'd ever noticed. As such that he meant that he would have to think of someone else to go to for aid where such teachings were concerned but the question was now who did he go to for help? He though about it for a moment, about his friends, and realized that he might not be able to get help there from them either. Lusala was a merchant, as was Lusala's father, he wasn't sure if merchants used magic but at least during the time he'd spent with his friend he hadn't noticed any magic on Lusala's part.

Who else was there, then? Not Oggie, he'd talked about wanting to get himself a set of gauntlets to use to defend others meaning that he was likely going to be a warrior of some sort as well. Due to that alone he knew that he wasn't the one that Makani would be able to go to for this particular need. So who then? He thought about it for a while moment before he found himself thinking about Borra... but again that was someone that he hadn't really noticed doing anything magical but then again it had been some time since he'd spent a lot of time with him. Perhaps he could ask his sister about Borra? She seemed to be interested in Borra, wanting him and his sister to be a part of her troupe, meaning that she knew more about them then Makani himself. He would definitely have to talk to her about it, to see what she could telll him about Borra and any magic affinity that he might have... or Borra's sister if it turned out that she was more magically inclined then Borra himself was. He supposed he could mark those two as a possibility for now but he wouldn't put all of his hope on their shoulders since they may very well be warriors themselves.

He wondered if this meant that he was going to need to find someone that he didn't know to see if he was blessed with the ability to use magic despite the fact that he was blind. It was a rather intimidating thought, that he might very well need to go out and find someone that he didn't know, to ask them for help. The idea was an intimidating one, but it was something that he really wanted to do if he wanted to learn more about himself, about his abilities, and to see if was really a viable option. He would be more then happy to throw his everything into magic if it was something he might actually be able to learn. He'd much rather be a mage, even one that had to work ten fold harder then a mage with sight, if that meant that he would be more then just a weight around the neck of his family. He loved his father and sister, but he didn't want to be a burden on them. If this was something that he could actually do... just imagine it he thought to himself.

It really would be a strange turn of fate indeed but something that he might be able even be able to use to compensate for his lack of sight. Thus far he'd been able to sense snowballs as they were coming at him, even finding himself able to catch one of them. It was something that most likely a very simple feat for a normal person but for Makani it had been a miracle in and of itself. He knew for sure that he couldn't just rest on his laurels because of that, what he'd done, as simple as it was, it was just the tip of the mountain. He had to keep going! Meaning that he was going to have to gather his courage and search for someone else that had the gift of magic he realized. It was something that made him a little jittery, feeling as though he'd eaten too much candy, just thinking about it.

The very basic question then became where was it that he should start? How could he find someone that would be able to look him over and figure out if what he was doing was a form of magic? He had no idea but it was the only thing that made sense to him... though at the same time it wasn't as though he was slinging about any spells, was he? What if it wasn't magic? What if it was some sort of blessing from Bergchi or it was from one of the spirits that were out there or another? It was really hard to tell, especially on his own when he knew nothing about such thing. So yes, he needed to find someone who did know. Best that he did so on his own time though, not wanting to bother his busy father and sister with this. Not until he knew what it was, how to better use it, and if it was something he would in fact be able to use to get stronger. All he knew was that if he could use the strange ability to make something of himself then he would do whatever needed to be done!

With that in mind he leaned against the Raptrix that was sitting next to him, his hazy eyes sinking closed as he cuddled against her. He would see about finding a teacher as soon as he could he thought to himself, hoping that there would be someone out there that would be willing to teach someone like him. He was worried that nobody with magical powers would take him seriously but he was going to work hard regardless of that was all.

After the Snowball Fight

Long after the snowball fight was over, he'd shared a hot drink with his sister, and she'd gone up into her room which was located in a higher up part of the house, Makani was curled up in a pile of furs with Rae. The Raptrix had settled down, letting him use her as a pillow, and he was feeling quite content at the moment, "It was a lot of fun today, don't you think? I cant believe that Eira actually came out to play with me." He said, glad that their father had made her come out with him. At first he had been worried that she wouldn't really have any interest in the whole game, she wasn't exactly the most playful of people, but she had come to have a lot of fun with it if her laughter was any indication. Of course he got the feeling that a lot of her joy in the event was due to the fact that she had been able to pelt a bunch of other women with snow... not the best of reasons behind why someone should be enjoying themselves but he supposed that when it came to Eira beggars couldn't be choosey. She had come with him, she had a fun time, and that was that.

Now that the day of games was over, the sun having long set, he knew that tomorrow meant that he was going to have to return to what he'd been working on, that being finding someone around the village that might have some sort of magical inclination. He wanted to learn from them if at all possible, to be able to wield magic himself, hoping that it was in fact magic was what it was that was allowing him to sense things around him. If it was magic, if it was a gift that he had access too, then he would be able to hone it to the point that it wasn't a just a spotty at best ability like it was now. He would be able to get better with it, put time and training into it, and he would be able to become someone grand one day... or at least that was the plan. He turned over onto his side, reaching out so that he could scratch a hand against Rae's ear, "How about we go out tomorrow? I know that you were stuck home today while I was playing with Eira so we should go on a nice walk."

While it wouldn't be as exciting a day as today was, there wouldn't be a snowball fight, it would be unlikely that he would have a meeting with someone like Oggie, but he still felt that it would be fun. He rather enjoyed his time with his Raptrix friend after all, their walks were normally nice, calm, and enjoyable. He gave a bit of a smile when he felt Rae's tail set to wagging, a sure sign that she was as eager for the walk as he was. She wasn't one for sitting around, and certainly not one for being stuck at home all day, but Herluin had decided that it was best that she didn't go with them to the snowball just in case. They didn't want her taking offense to people throwing snow at her master after all since that might very well have resulted in someone being bitten. Now that Makani was back from the game then she wouldn't be leaving his side again for some time, not without a damn good reason at least.

Giving a bit of a yawn Makani reached out, hand groping around for a moment, before he found the edge of one of the furs, dragging it up so that it was pulled up to his chin and he gave a smile, "Mmmm, much better." He all but purred. The one thing that he still wasn't used to after spending the first part of his life in Sauti was the cold. Still, he was sure that, so long as he had a good sized pile of warm furs that his father gathered for them, he would be fine. Between the furs and Rae he was feeling quite comfortable... though at the same time there was a part of him that dreamed of something more.

There was a part of him that missed Lusala even more on nights like this. He'd rather enjoyed the night that they had hung out together, sharing dinner, getting to cuddle up with him, and chatted about lots of fun stuff. How he wanted that again. His friend was a busy man though, he was probably traveling far and wide, selling to those that needed the wares that he and his father transported from place to place. It was an important job, it wasn't really his place to try to call him away from it, but at the same time it was another good reason for him to get stronger. If he was strong he could try to seek out his friend once more... though a part of him worried that maybe Lusala had forgotten about him. It had been some time since he visited this place after all. Giving a shake of his head he decided not to think too hard on that. He'd promised that he would never forget his friend and that was that.

Reaching out he searched around for a moment with his hand, digging amongst the furs until he found the scarf that Lusala had given to him. He'd put it there to keep it safe while he was out today but now that he was thinking on his friend he wanted the item back. He ran his hands over it, gave a bit of a smile, then held it close as he relaxed, "I think that it's time for sleep." He murmured to Rae, sounding quite sleepy as he said the words. He wondered if he would dream of his friend tonight... he supposed he would see as soon as he drifted off.
