A Whimsical Choice

How long had it been since her world had been flipped upside down? Hayden Lynch had once been an ordinary eighteen-year-old girl who attended St. Magdalena’s Seminary, who enjoyed theater and magic tricks, who often biked around town performing minor tricks. She had once been normal.

She lay in bed as she stared at the bleached walls of her dorm. The spotty shadows of trees swayed back and forth, creeping across the walls and furniture as if to beckon her to come along with them. Hayden slowly turned her eyes at her roommate, peacefully asleep and softly breathing. She tried to stifle her bed’s creaks as she slipped out. Nimble fingers delicately coaxed the window open. Lips pursed. Hayden took another glance at the resting girl before jumping outside. For the time being, Hayden Lynch had disappeared from the world. There was only Lieutenant Fukalite now. The tree moaned beneath her sudden weight as she hastily clicked the window shut and slid down the trunk.

She had agreed to join the Negaverse, and she wasn’t quite sure why. The realization evoked a grim smile. Even as a child, Fukalite possessed the nasty habit of doing whatever immediately came to mind. She wasn’t stupid, but she didn’t like to think about her actions either. She was brash. She was whimsical. Sometimes it was beneficial. Most of the time it was a hindrance and a major flaw.

“What a troublesome situation I’ve gotten myself into,” she muttered to herself, eyes glowing with amused excitement. She wasn’t very pleased with her decision, but she wasn’t disappointed either. Her hands reached out into thin air—a subspace, a magical pocket, she had been told—and Fukalite grasped a thin stick. She pulled her hands back, tightly holding onto a slender fire sparkler. The uselessness of her “weapon” boggled her mind. Was the Negaverse urging her to emphasize physical fighting prowess rather than rely on a tool for assistance? There seemed to be logic in that---a weapon could easily be ripped out of her grasp or broken during the middle of a battle.

But a fire sparkler seemed so absurd. Was she supposed to tote along extra paper to (hopefully) light on fire and fling at people? Hardly efficient. For the time being, it appeared that Fukalite would have to resort to her fists and other promising objects that would be lying around. Frustrating.

Sparkler in hand, she sighed and turned around to head back into town. Her boots clacked against the concrete, the clicks echoing as the inexperienced lieutenant traversed the streets and plotted a scheme to meet her “energy quota.” Fukalite scowled, lightly knocking her head. It had only been a few days since enlisting into the strange organization, but she had yet to fully comprehend its system. She kneeled down, pulling out a lighter and lighting the sparkler. She held it over the street, idly observing the bright sparks dissipate as it fell, never quite touching the ground.

“Excuse me, what are you doing?” Fukalite peered up at the girl, her round face lit up from the sparks.

“I’m lighting my sparkler. Would you like to join me?” The lieutenant smiled amiably as she held out the stick to the stranger, always grasping the younger girl’s hand the entire time.

She wasn’t sure why she had gotten into this odd circumstance, but she planned to see it through until the end. Fukalite was a whimsical sort of person, but Lady Luck loved her.

First Day

Hayden sighed, rolling her shoulders after a strenuous day of setting up the camp. She had never fully comprehended how much work it took to prepare certain activities until now. Not only did she spend the past few days going through junior counselor training, but she had just spent the past hours cleaning the cabins, shuttling supplies from one place to another, and checking up with senior counselors about what tasks to lead and who she was in charge of caring for during the camp’s duration. The past week had been busier than she thought, but at least Hayden now realized how much effort running a camp needed.

“Alright, alright. Hurry up and unpack your things before heading off to dinner, alright?” she gently reminded as she briefly popped her head into a cabin of giggling, rambunctious children who had yet to take out their things out from their suitcases and bags. Noticing some of their shocked and guilty expressions, Hayden grinned and walked away. She clearly heard the kids break out into another giggle fest before there were the sounds of bags being unzipped.

Of course, she also had to remember that she was not just here to be a junior counselor meant to look after children. She was part of the Negaverse now, and that meant sucking away energy—even from kids. Hayden had no qualms about it, though. They wouldn’t die. They wouldn’t get sick. They would just be flipping tired the next morning. If they complained of exhaustion? “That’s life, deal with it. So next activity today is…”

Everyone shuffled into the dining hall, eager for some food after hours of driving up to the camp, unpacking, and briefly socializing with others. Fortunately for Hayden, she recognized a few of her friends, although she also noticed a few familiar faces from the Negaverse. She did not force herself to interact with her fellow comrades—there would be plenty of time as soon as night came. Instead, she plopped herself down by her friends and smiled. “Been enjoying your stay so far?” Hayden smiled. By the end of the hour, the hall was cleared of most occupants, campers and counselors included. She chuckled. It was perhaps time for her to turn in for the night.

Once Hayden stepped outside, she stopped and closed her eyes to breathe in the crisp night air. “What a lovely night, don’t you think?” she spoke aloud, but no one was around to respond. Nonetheless, Hayden smiled and happily hopped down the steps toward her cabin. When she stepped inside, she discovered the lights were out and her fellow roommates were already asleep. Huh. The door softly shut as she remained outside. On her way back Hayden had noticed most of the lights were out.

She closed her eyes and in Hayden’s place was Lieutenant Fukalite.

Now was the time to collect energy.

Rain, Rain, Go Away...

A disheartened Hayden sighed as she peered through the window, fogged up with white mist as a flurry of drops pelted the glass to create a somewhat comforting tap tap tap rhythm. Shoulders slumped, she firmly planted herself in front of the window as she earnestly prayed for the wet weather to let up soon. While she did not have a perpetual grudge against rain, Hayden had signed up to become a junior counselor for the purpose of playing in the sun, not the rain. A drop from the ceiling plopped onto the top of her head and she shuddered at the sudden p***k of coldness. She frowned, rubbing her head. Even worse, her cabin had a few leaks. Across the wood floor there was already a vague trail of puddles forming. She curled her lips into a huffy pout as she scooted her chair away from the leak.

“Really, what’s up with this crazy weather?” she complained, her voice quiet enough so that the rest of her cabin mates would not hear. They all appeared to be preoccupied with activities of their own. Someone was reading a book while another was sketching. Yet another was playing some sort of card game. Everyone was rather isolated—how incredibly boring. Hayden was tempted to call out to the rest of the girls, but as she turned around in her seat she dropped the plan. They seemed too into their current activities to bother interacting with someone else.

Her lips pressed together into a thin line. This was all so depressing. She leaned forward, pressing her hands against the window so she could stare outside in a vain attempt to find someone foolish enough to walk around in the rain. To her delight, Hayden did notice a few strolling outside, but they were all toting an umbrella. She held back a groan as she rested her forehead against the glass and her breath fogged up the window. Unfortunately, both Hayden and her parents had assumed that her trip at camp would be filled with sunny weather. Consequently, she had not bothered to tote with her an umbrella to take shelter under. She fell back against her chair.

A thought then struck her. Was she expected to perform her Negaverse duties in this weather? Hayden sighed, exasperated. She reached up to pull down her bandana until it completely covered her eyes. Her superiors wouldn’t punish her if she missed one day, right? Besides, it was pouring! Walking out into the rain would be too suspicious. Yes, that’s right. Too suspicious. She repeated the excuse to herself over and over.

“Hey.” Her voice broke the silence, and she could hear her cabin mates shifting as they turned to look at her. “I’m going to go to bed early, okay?”

Coming Home

Hayden Lynch woke up to birds happily twittering outside her cabin. Drowsy eyes reluctantly cracked open and she blinked a few times to adjust herself to the sunlight streaming through the window. She yawned. Just a few more minutes wouldn’t hurt, right? Eyelids closed as she rolled over to her side, burying the covers over her head to block out the light. However, her peace was broken when one of her cabin mates walked over and mercilessly pulled the sheets away. Hayden groaned, curling into a ball and opening one eye. “A few more minutes, please!”

The girl laughed and shook her head. “No way. This is the last day, remember? You need to finish packing up your things and get on the bus,” she explained before walking away, letting the comforter flutter to the wooden floor. A pouting Hayden glared at her before sighing and stepping out of bed. Bare skin touched the cold floor and she grumbled, but stood up anyways. A hand combed through her hair for knots as she walked over to her suitcase to get out some new clothes. She slipped out of her cotton shirt in exchange for a strapless top. Hayden tugged down her pajama pants and pulled on a fresh pair of dark blue jeans. A few minutes of sifting rewarded the young woman with a jacket which she happily shrugged on. Then she spent some time organizing her belongings and a satisfied grin graced her face when she zipped the piece of luggage closed. Packing? Done!

She tied her hair up in her usual bandana and ponytail. Hayden didn’t need a mirror. She had been doing it for so many years that she didn’t actually need a reflection to do it up properly. The thought made her smile. Finally, she propped up her suitcase and rolled it out of the room. It clunked heavily with each stair she passed, but it didn’t bother Hayden in the slightest. Instead, she continued through the grounds until she spotted the bright yellow bus up ahead. The compartments for the luggage were open and she gladly heaved her suitcase into an open space before rushing over to the cabin filled with the kids she were in charge of. Without mercy, she burst open the door and hollered at the top of her lungs—made even louder do to her years of theatre work. “Alright, kiddies! Time to wake up and head onto the bus back home!”

Her yell was immediately met with groans, whines, and various complaints from the youngsters, but she easily brushed it off as she continued to hang by the open door. “Come along now children, it is time to get onto the magic school bus,” she sang in a teasing voice as the kids reluctantly dragged themselves out of bed. Hayden couldn’t wipe the amused grin off her face.
