Camp had been running smooth enough, so far. Everyone might be a bit exhausted, but Chris was fine blaming that on the poor quality of the beds they had there. He just needed extra coffee in the mornings to really wake him up, and then after that, he was just... trying to sleep. He thought he did sleep well, but apparently not.
Either way, camp wasn't going to stop just because they were all tired! Nope, they needed to get these activities set up, and at the moment he was busy preparing for some kind of arts and crafts project. He didn't understand what they could possibly make with paint, feathers, glitter, and various other objects, but he wasn't going to start questioning the other counselor's decisions.
There was one other girl helping, at least. And he went over to her to split up the paintbrushes.
"Hey, I'm Chris. You're Hayden, right?" he double checked, not wanting to call her the wrong name on accident.

Hayden didn’t particularly mind the creaky beds. Rather, she found immense enjoyment in pestering her cabin mates by constantly fidgeting around as she attempted to sleep, creating a wonderful cacophony of squeaking wood. If it meant playfully tormenting her fellow junior counselors, Hayden could handle slightly aching shoulders.
It was still morning and still her muscles were aching. She scowled, rolling her shoulders in a vain attempt to relieve the pain, but quickly abandoned her efforts to focus on setting up the area instead. Besides, it wasn’t like the aches were that bad—she could easily tough it out. Hayden searched through the pile of brushes, curiously checking to confirm that all of the brushes were clean and no one would be crying about how splotches of blue mixed in with the red paint or yellow with the blue. If there was one thing she did not appreciate, it was the sobbing and whining of a child—children were lovely and a joy to be with, but cheering them up with gags and new things to do was tiring work.
“I don’t know. Am I?” she answered, a smile tugging on her lips as she separated the brushes by size. “Yeah, I’m Hayden. You’re one of the counselors helping out with the sports activities, right? What a special occasion to find you setting up the arts and crafts station.”

"I am," he said with a mock grimace. "Sports people should never have anything to do with arts and crafts."
That wasn't true at all. He definitely didn't mind arts and crafts. He was an 'artist' of sorts, after all... Just one that worked with a lot of math and such. He was a more hands on person, so arts and crafts was right down his alley.
"I'm Chris," he introduced himself with a smile. "I've already set out the different paints at each table. I tried keeping some to use for another time, but if you think they'll need more, then there's a box under the table in the front with the rest of the paint." Hopefully the campers wouldn't go through all of it in one go, but... if they did, they always had some more, right?
"Do you know what everyone will be making? Or is it just going to be a free for all?" What? He was curious... There were a lot of supplies, but he couldn't figure out if there was any method to the madness.

“I happen to enjoy both sports and arts and crafts, so I’m at home with either activity. Truly a blessing.” Hayden returned his mock grimace with another teasing grin. “I must say I’m most at home on stage though.” She brushed her fingers over the bristles of the brushes and was relieved to find that none were stiff from carless washing and dried paint. “No extra cleaning. Just my luck.” Hayden grinned. She always seemed to have enough luck to spare. Gathering the brushes, she dutifully wandered from table to table to deliver them.
“Smart. Too much paint and I fear that a paint war might break out. I’d rather not have extra messes to clean.” She nodded approvingly, the beam on her face doing little to mask her immense delight.
“The projects?” Hayden strode over to the front table and glanced underneath to confirm the extra paint. “Sort of a free for all. There are a few crafts planned, but if the kids want to make something else and we have the supplies for it—they’re more than welcome to make it.” She hopped onto the table, crossing her legs and idly swinging them back and forth. “Heck, I’m considering making myself some decorations to clip onto my bike. So long as the kids don’t need my help, anyways.”

Chris smiled at her comment, nodding in understanding about being on stage. Yeah, he could definitely pass on that part. He wasn't much of an actor, anyway.
"Yeah, I would rather not end up scrubbing paint off the floor when this thing is over. It's bad enough that they're going to be using glitter," he said with a shutter, although it was still obvious that he was joking about it. It didn't bother him so much, anyway. It was just something that had to be done.
He made his way over to the tables that Hayden wasn't at, making sure everything was organized. "Well, I'll be here, so I'll make sure you have some time getting something done for yourself, okay? And what sports do you like? Do you play any or just like to watch...?" Of course it would be the sports comment that would get his attention. He couldn't hold back asking for long.

Her eyes twinkled at the mention of glitter. “Oh come on—glitter isn’t that bad. In fact, I think you would look rather fabulous with a bit of sparkle.” Hayden flashed him a toothy grin as she reached over for a small can filled with white glitter. She dipped in a few fingers and playfully blew a pinch-full of the glitter in the older boy’s direction. A glitter war wasn’t as notoriously messy, but the tiny sparkles were quite difficult to gather. They were so tiny that it was more likely that all glitter war participants would be shining for the rest of the day, if not more.
She smiled appreciatively. “I’d like that, thank you.” At the talk of sports, Hayden chuckled as she came to realize that Chris was more interested in athletics than art. “I play and watch. I’ve done a bit of soccer and whatever else people rope me into, but I like to bike the most.”

His eyes widened when she took the glitter and blew it at him, although he didn't do anything to jump out of the way. Instead he sputtered and grumbled lightly to himself about how he'll never get all the glitter out now. But she was right, it wasn't horrible.
"You just wait," he mock threatened. "Your back is going to be turned and I'm gonna dump a whole bucket on you." Not really, but it was amusing to think of how much glitter would be flying everywhere. He was sure the head counselors wouldn't be all that pleased if a senior and junior counselor encouraged stuff like that, though.
And of course he was more interested in athletics than art! "Ah, soccer is fun," he said with a nod, attempting to brush what he could of the tiny bit of glitter he had on him off. "I play baseball, mostly, but I can get roped into doing anything, really. I haven't been biking in a while, though." He just didn't seem to have the time. How depressing...
(( I don't know how I missed this! I'm sorry, Syu! ;; ))

She grinned broadly as she watched him grumble to himself. In a way, Hayden found it cute.
Her grin stretched wider as she returned his fake threat with a teasing laugh. She angled her head away from him as she flipped her hair. “You can certainly try. I’ll look utterly fabulous if you do.” Shortly after she broke into a giggle.
“Sports are always fun,” she noted as she leaned over to flick away another speck of glitter off of Chris. “Baseball, huh? Personally, I’m not interested in that particular sport, though I’ve played softball here and there.” Hayden’s eyes seemed to glow at his last statement. “Biking? Would you like to go on a couple trails with me? Do you do tricks too?” She paused and laughed. “I’m sorry if that sounded a bit too eager. I usually just bike on my own, so it’d be nice to have some company.”

Chris smiled as she giggled, not minding the teasing at all. It was just all good fun.
"It's fine. Baseball isn't for everyone. Usually nothing happens. Heaven forbid there's a no hitter! That's nine innings of watching two people play catch!" he joked, although he would very much like to pitch a no hitter. He hadn't managed to before, though. They'd always get a couple hits on him before the game was up. One day, though, he would be able to.
He grinned in amusement at her enthusiasm, shaking his head to let her know he didn't mind it at all. "Sure, I'd love to go biking with you. I... don't know any tricks, though," he added with a small grimace. "That would be pretty bad if I tried, I think. I would probably flip over and break something... Or the bike." But other than that, he thought he might enjoy a ride around the lake when they weren't required to run around after the campers.

“A no hitter, you say? Sounds plenty dull, but I’m sure it would be a testament to the pitcher’s abilities!” she commented, wiping off a few flecks of glitter off her hands. Hayden had just barely touched the sparkles and already they were stubbornly clinging to her skin. She bit back a nervous laugh as she imagined the mess the campers would create. How painful.
“Really? You would?” Her voice sounded cautious, but hopeful at the same time. It wasn’t everyday someone said they were willing to tag only on a trail. Hayden smirked and quirked an eyebrow at him. “That’s a shame, but I’m sure I could teach you a trick or two. They won’t be anything particularly dangerous. Well, not life-threatening at least.” She flashed him a toothy grin. “It won’t be too hard. I promise.” Then Hayden leaned over to glance at the clock on the table. "Hmm. It's almost time for them to come in."

"Yeah, it really would," he agreed, imagining the possibility of that no hitter for himself, but who knew what would happen down the road.
Chris made a face as he watched her try and get rid of some of the glitter, quickly lifting his hand to wipe at his face to try and get rid of any that might still be lingering. Great, there were probably sparkly flecks everywhere. Hopefully it wouldn't encourage the campers to throw the art supplies around. That would be horrible!
"Yeah, I wouldn't mind," he said with a smile and a light shrug, before laughing a little nervously at the thought of learning tricks. "Yeah, please nothing life-threatening. But I guess I could try to learn if you're willing to teach." He definitely didn't mind learning new things, and if she wanted to go riding sometime, then why not?
"Are you read for them?" he half joked, glancing up to the clock as well. "And yeah, I think I can hear them... Let's hope they are actually going to do an art project instead of throwing glitter," he said with a pointed look in Hayden's direction, but it was just teasing, and he soon replaced the look with a smile. "How about making masks? or... They can probably make decorated paper fans... I'm not really that great with crafts, but I'll do my best to help! And make sure no one tries eating glue... that would be bad..."

Hayden laughed. “I promise. We’ll start with the basics, like slides and wheelies.” She smirked and crossed her arms, a hand mock-thoughtfully stroking her chin. “I’m sure you’ll be a BMX pro in no time.” Her hands slid into her pockets, searching for her phone, but realized she didn’t have it on her. “Hmm. Would you remind me to get your number or e-mail after this session?”
Lips curled into an amused smirk. “Well, I personally wouldn’t mind them throwing glitter, sans the cleaning up afterwards of course.” She languidly slid off the desk and restlessly arranged the materials on a nearby table. “Yes, masks or fans will do. Any craft is acceptable, really. Ah—have no fear, I have very deft hands.” Hayden spun around and motioned with her hands, grinning as if to suggest something more. However, in the next moment she held a deck of cards within her grasp. “I don’t recall ever seeing someone eating glue, even during my preschool days. I assume I had normal classmates.”
“Oka~y, everyone, please take a seat! Do not touch the materials yet. I want to explain what we’ll be making today!” she instructed in a loud, clear voice as the campers filed in. A few children paused as she absentmindedly shuffled the cards from one hand to the other in a hurried flurry of white. “I wish us both the best,” Hayden mumbled through a pleasant smile.

"Slides and wheelies??" he repeated warily, unsure of his own abilities, but he smiled at her either way, and laughed at her 'BMX pro' comment. "Yeah, I can get you it after this," he said with a nod, not minding at all. She had a lot of... spunk, and he liked that. It showed that she had passion for things and that was always a good thing, in his books.
"No more glitter," Chris said, sounding almost exasperated. He would be very happy if he didn't have to clean up a lot of glitter after this, but something was telling him that he would be doing that, anyway. Wonderful. His eyes widened curiously at her suggestive grin, his eyes dropping down to her legs as she slid from the desk. Ah, yeah, it was quite obvious that she was a biker. She had nice legs... At least a nine in his book.
He quickly shook his head at himself, and nearly tripped over a chair on his way to stand by the door to hold open for the children. He was seeing someone else already, so it was almost like cheating for him to be looking at another young lady, right? Er, but it was just a glance, and nothing bad...
Chris had every intention of letting her take charge for the activity, not wanting to overstep his boundaries. After all, he was supposed to supervise baseball, not arts and crafts. Once the children were inside, though, she made his way back over to where Hayden was waiting to start, glancing her over again, before quickly smiling and giving her a thumbs up and awkward laugh to top it. Yeah, like he wasn't just looking at her legs again...

“No more glitter? You break my poor little heart, but I’ll try to keep the kids from overdosing on sparkles.” She kept smiling at Chris as she watched his gaze dip. Hayden’s knowing smile stretched wider. “I’m sure someone as charming as yourself has a significant other, but if you happen to split up or feel a bit lonely, I’m more than willing to keep you company.” She laughed as Chris almost tripped while heading over to the door and usher the rest of the kids in. Once again she fiddled with her deck of cards, her watchful eyes taking note of each camper as he or she took a seat. “How you want to interpret that is up to you, I’m fine with whatever.”
The cacophony began to fade as the children obediently looked up at Hayden and waited to receive instructions. She returned Chris’ smile with one of her own before launching into a brief explanation. “Alright, everyone. Today’s plan is to make masks! So you can either make it out of construction paper, or from these paper plates, or if you think you can work quickly enough, I think we have the materials for paper mache.” She gestured toward the stack of materials placed on all the tables. “However, if you would prefer to make a different craft, please come to me or Chris for approval.”

Chris laughed awkwardly, feeling even more guilty as he was reminded of the lovely blonde he was dating. They weren't official yet, of course, but he hoped they would be, soon. "Yeah, sure," he said rather sheepishly, not sure what he was agreeing to, but Hayden was friendly enough, so it wasn't a bad thing, right?
He smiled as Hayden began to instruct the children on what they were going to be doing, and then went about making sure they had what they needed to make their perfect masks. He made sure that Hayden had some time to get her own mask, or whatever craft she wanted to do, and even sat down to try and make his own. There was a lot of chattering and passing around supplies, but overall, it wasn't as horrible of an experience as he was expecting. In fact, it wasn't horrible at all! Granted, his little brother was absent from this particular activity, so his stresslevel was lowered significantly.
"What's the cards for?" he couldn't help but ask as he made his rounds, wanting to make sure that the campers were doing okay, but ended up getting too curious to, well, not ask.
