The senshi was out on patrol, as he had been since the moment he had dropped Tony off at the hospital. He was on the hunt, looking for any Negaverse agent or youma he could take his frustrations out on. It didn't matter to him what he hit, so long as he was hitting something.

His father was in the hospital now, though he had already made it clear to Nate that he wouldn't stay long. He had charged the senshi, though he had no idea about that one, with taking care of his pet dog at the apartment.

Like Chaonis was really going to sit around at home, staring at some stupid corgi when he could be out beating the living hell out of bad guys. Anyway, the dog was fine on her own for a few hours. It's not like she knew how to open doors.

He had left her food and water. That was all dogs needed, right?

For now, he was just walking along the streets in the early morning, fueled by rage, looking for anything to take it out on. He'd get back to the apartment before Tony was released, easily, and there would be no problem.

The city was acting strange, but when did it not act strange? For years it had been crawling with so-called terrorists and plagued by murders—though there had been a drastic decrease in deaths. But now, news of bird monsters and rock golems spread on the streets like wildfire. It did not take Hayden very long to realize that weird had just been kicked up a notch.

Not that this hindered her from walking around the city, night or day. She liked to think—knew, rather— she possessed a substantial amount of luck to keep herself out of mortal danger. Hayden would be lying if she claimed that she had never encountered a youma in her entire life, but at least she had escaped the need to fight them for her life.

Yawn. “I’m tired.” Hayden was sleepy, but something had urged the girl to drag herself out of bed and off school campus. She yawned again as she smoothed out the wrinkles in her jeans. While Hayden continued to rub the sleep out of her eyes she flipped open her cellphone to check the time. “It’s early, but maybe I can get some coffee nearby.”

Hnghhh . . .

Something groaned, causing her to curiously turn around to stare up at a towering golem.

“Huh. s**t.” Her legs paralyzed from shock, Hayden settled with calmly staring at the monster. Had her luck suddenly run out at last?

Chaonis continued his hunt, though he felt like he was going through the motions. Jump on roof. Feel around. Look down alley. Jump on next roof. He hated the drag of it, the routine, but reminded himself that no fight was the same. Once he found something to hit, things would pick up.

And if he did find that Nega, things would be even better.

For now, though, he was stuck in the drag and could only imagine the fun awaiting him 'once he found something'. He hated that, too. He hated having to push himself to do something, to have that thing called 'motivation'. It was unfamiliar to him, and usually he shied away from it. If he was dedicated to something, chances were someone else would be counting on him. And that he just couldn't have, because he loathed, maybe feared though he would never admit to it, failing. Especially failing when other people could see it.

But Tony, at least, wasn't aware that Chaonis was out here, fighting for him. Hell, he didn't know Nate was a senshi. So at least this was still all secret, and he didn't have to justify himself to anyone.

He spotted the rock monster before he saw the girl, a grin spreading across his face as all thoughts were gone from his mind and he ran toward his target. He leaped from the roof, plummeting down toward the monster and slamming his fist into what he imagined was its face.

Which, of course, hurt like hell. It was like punching a wall. Or a rock, really.

He landed heavily near Hayden, looking at her in surprise, like he hadn't purposefully come to her aid.

"Yo, you shouldn't be here."

Hayden liked to think that luck was always on her side. She did well in games of chance and guessing on tests usually resulted in decent scores. Although she was clever, it never hurt to rely on a bit of fate to spice her life. Watching her foes’ faces twist into shock as the dice rolled five’s and six’s never ceased pleasing her. She had her days of bad luck, too. She just liked to surreptitiously pluck those days out of her memories.

The shock began to ebb away enough so that Hayden began to take cautious steps away from the creature. Her eyes steadily remained on the golem. Hayden could feel her heart slowing just slightly and her thoughts recollecting together. While she recovered from one shock, fate lovingly sent her another—a light-colored blur flinging itself at the creature. This time, she jumped and took more hurried steps away from both creatures.

Realizing that the blur was a human she furrowed her eyebrows and craned her neck forward. “Yes, I definitely came here—toward a giant monster that can squash me like a bug—of my volition.” Her tone was casual, but it didn’t take much intelligence to pick up on the sarcasm. Hayden glanced at the monster, shaking its head and raising its arms to swing at them both.

She grinned and offhandedly nodded her head at the creature. “Watch out, by the way.” Then Hayden ran like hell.

The senshi glared at her.

"I'm just saying, whether you're here of your own volition or not, you should probably not be here for much longer, right?" He sounded grumpy, like she had insulted him by arguing with him. She hadn't, but she didn't need to know that. He was trying to be the hero, damn it. He didn't need anyone to cop a 'tude about it.

It would be so much easier to be a hero if he didn't actually have to interact with the people he was saving. Maybe he should pick up a strict 'behind the scenes' rule about things. Do the work, but don't get seen. Or at the very least don't stop for a chat.

He was so busy grumping about her being rude to him, in his opinion, that he almost missed the monster swinging at him.

Almost, because the monster hadn't missed, and the strong blow that sent the senshi sprawling was a fairly good attention grabber. He hit the ground hard and saw the girl running, blaming her entirely for that one. While he struggled to get to his feet he saw the rock monster turn and give chase to the human that was fleeing the scene.

Whatever, let it get her!

But Chaonis found his feet moving against his thoughts, and he charged after the monster and the girl, jogging in an effort to let the pain from the last hit dissipate before he jumped in for more. And also to let the girl get chased a bit more.

“You expect me to run away without responding to your statement? Blasphemy.” She stared at Chaonis with a blank expression, her wide eyes faintly glowing with glee. Frustrating people usually proved to be an amusing game.

Hayden stifled a laugh as the senshi narrowly dodged the golem’s swing. She was tempted to quickly retort “I warned you,” but became preoccupied with escaping the monster’s attention. As she fled the scene she could feel the vibrations of its clumsy steps stomping across the street. They did not grow fainter. She pumped more strength into her legs, willing them to leap longer strides.

Hearing the sharp cracks of rock pounding against rock, she twisted her head to notice the rock creature swinging its arm up for another smash. Without a second thought Hayden jumped to the side, slamming into the brick walls of a store. She gritted her teeth and closed her eyes as she felt the shock in her bones.

“Not good,” she hissed, forcefully pulling herself away from the building. Cradling her arms, Hayden looked up and dumbly watched Chaonis jump at the golem. A small part of her had yet to fully comprehend the situation she found herself in.

Noticing the senshi’s movement, the golem paused and focused its stone eyes on Chaonis. Although its face was blank it was clear that it was curious. It waddled over to the boy and slowly swung at him.

Chaonis saw the girl running to get away from the rock monster, which in itself was not interesting. Who wouldn't want to run away from one of those things? At least, if they were normal people who couldn't punch a hole through it.

Actually, Chaonis had never punched a hole through a youma before.

It sounded like an interesting goal.

He saw her slam into the wall and knew he couldn't hesitate. If he did, she would be sidewalk pizza, or wall splatter art, if the rock monster managed to hit her with its hefty fists. He charged forward with every ounce of speed his feet could push out of him. It was good that he had already gotten the thing's attention.

"Want to fist fight me, do ya?"

He grinned broadly.

"Warning! Earthquake zone!" He called his attack, feeling his muscles burn with new power. It was always a jolt to the system, the boost of strength that came from his magic. It was channeled into his body, fortifying his physical attacks. He ducked the monster's slow swing, leaping up once he was close to it and upper cutting it with a solid fist to what should be its jaw, though he had learned that one could never tell with monsters or youma.

"You alright?" he called to the girl, just in case. Plus, he liked to show off and multitask while fighting, because it was just so easy. Mostly. Or not.

Hayden rubbed away the sore pain in her wrists. The stinging pricks began to ebb away, but she paid no attention to herself, but to Chaonis. Fearlessly, he ducked the monster’s swing and smashed its jaw with his fist. It paused, standing still with its head raised to the sky. Tiny fractures embedded themselves into its rock jaw.

Her jaw tightened as Hayden watched him battle the beast. Even though her expression remained calm, her eyes held a curiously-envious glow to them. She continued to scowl at the senshi until she heard him call out to her. Immediately, Hayden began to smile.

“Yes, but I’m not sure for how long.” Her mind calm at last, logic told her to hightail it down the streets and let the boy handle the rest. Curiosity urged her to stay and watch, perhaps even assist. Hayden’s smile turned into a sincere grin. Her body relaxed, she crossed her arms and idly observed the battle. She focused her attention on the golem that angrily gnashed its teeth together as it hobbled after the two.

It suddenly stopped and she quirked an eyebrow at it. Empty sockets directed themselves at Hayden before, in a stroke of genius, the golem leaned over and scooped up the girl into one of its hands.

“Wha---dammit.” She hissed and furiously smashed her fists, but gritted her teeth when shots of pain ran up her arms.

Chaonis felt a sharp pain in his knuckles, and he worried for a moment. The thought had never occurred to him before that very badly timed instant, but it rushed into his head against his will and he could not block it. What would happen if he ever hurt his hands? Broke them? He would be absolutely useless.

He would be killed.

Dragging his thoughts from that, though, he focused on the battle at hand. It made his blood pump, his ears ringing. He almost didn't hear Hayden's response, though he had called to her. She was in trouble, and it was his job to make sure she got out of things alive. Maybe a little bruised and scratched, but that was nothing compared to the alternative. She could not get out of it at all, and then where would she be?

Dead. Obviously.

He was knocked off balance by a sideways blow he hadn't anticipated, not realizing what the rock monster was up to as it made to drop to its side, reaching out and... s**t. He reacted too late, and before he knew it, the girl he was supposed to be saving was now a hostage for the monster he was fighting.

"Oh, way to go!" He complained, like it was her fault. He clenched his fists tightly, leaping high off the ground and forcing his palms together. He interlocked his grip and slammed the two hands together into the top of the rock monster's head.

Hayden wheezed as the golem gripped her tightly, squeezing and constricting her lungs. She gasped, swallowing the small bits of air she could manage to get. Eyes wide, she tried to calmly grasp the situation, but the lack of air made it difficult to organize her thoughts.

Hearing his whine, she twisted her head to glare at him through the pain in her chest. “Sorry,” she choked out, voice tinged with frustration and annoyance. It could not have been helped. Clumsy as it was, the monster had a ridiculously large arm that was difficult to avoid. She was an average girl. He—or at least she guessed—was abnormal and dealt with these things on a daily basis. Whatever or whoever this guy was, Hayden did not like him.

The golem roared and promptly released the girl, sending her tumbling to the ground and rolling a few feet away from its feet. More fissures began to appear, spreading across its head. Oblivious, it angrily flailed its arms around, hoping to hit something.

Cursing, the Senshi of Danger, quickly took stock of the situation. His run and punch tactics were usually enough to get him through things by the seat of his pants, but sometimes he had to stop and think a bit more.

He didn't like to think.

At least he had gotten her away from the rock monster. Not in the most graceful way, and she would probably be rather bruised because of it, but hey. He wasn't here to make sure she got away from the monster without any bruises or cuts, and with all her clothes nice and clean. This was a fight, and people got hurt. All he had to do was make sure they didn't die.

Anyway, it was her fault for getting grabbed in the first place, right?

He grinned at the monster, noticing the cracks at last. So it seemed he didn't have to think at all: hitting the thing was going just fine. He liked that. It made the whole fight a lot less stressful, and he could certainly enjoy himself a bit more knowing he was actually making progress.

Even if his hands were hurting a bit.

"Alright, get back," he told the girl, who was probably a bit preoccupied with the 'trying to breathe' thing. Without waiting to see if she did, in fact, get back from anything he charged again, this time swinging his feet up to kick the monster where the cracks were forming. If he could, he'd climb up on it and smash it to dust by stomping, but he would have to settle for knocking it down first.

“Yeah, like I’m going to run over and jump into the path of danger,” Hayden hissed, still crouched on the ground. She sighed and adjusted her position so she could roll up her jeans. Her knees were bright red and throbbing. She gritted her teeth and delicately rubbed her legs. A bit of peeled skin, but hardly life threatening. Now that she was in the safety zone—at least, she hoped she was—she leaned back and sprawled her legs across the concrete. Bored eyes watched the senshi of danger continue to attack the monster. It was like watching television, only in person. Hayden chuckled at the thought.

It roared at the immense pain shooting through its rock body. Howling, it collapsed to the ground. The fissures echoed with a resounding crack as they grew larger. Lying on its back, the monster flailed its arms as it struggled to stand back up. It twisted its head to the left and right, searching for Chaonis with its beady eyes. Once the golem found the senshi, it grunted and slowly reached out to grab him.

Chaonis didn't have time to think about her words or make them into a fitting pun. Jump into the path of danger? He was Danger, so that was fitting.

He was a bit distracted by the golem, though, which was trying to catch old of him.

"Not gonna happen, buddy. I got you now!"

The Senshi of Danger continued his attacking, using his fists and feet to try and destroy the thing at last. It had put up a good fight, but Chaonis wasn't one to grant it any kind of leeway because of that. He liked good fights, but he liked winning them most. Losing was unacceptible: as was holding back for any reason.

Now that it had fallen, he wasn't going to let it get back up.

He would check in with the girl once he was sure all the trouble was gone. It was part of the job, wasn't it? Not the most important part of the job, obviously. The boring, tedius part that he would rather not have to do but figured it couldn't hurt. Unless she ran off before that, which would tell him she was fine and he could go on with his patrol.

It yelped and screamed, flailing its arms as it vainly smacked the ground in an attempt to push itself upright. Each punch and each kick sent immense power rippling through its stone body and creating more cracks throughout the rock armor. The golem roared indignantly as it swung an arm at Chaonis, but it was too late. It had already taken on too much damage. Its arm froze in front of the senshi’s face before giving one last moan as it crumbled to pieces, gravel and boulders tumbling to the ground before dissolving into dust.

“Congratulations.” Hayden’s voice was monotone as she propped herself up. She wiped her hands of stray dust and pebbles that left imprints on her palms. “That was certainly entertaining.” Her hands reached into her pockets to pull out her phone and bring it up to her ear. What was this? What had just happened? Her eyebrows knitted together, she suspiciously glared at Chaonis before silently walking away.

"Really. What was this?" she mumbled.

Chaonis was at once triumphant and disappointed when the youma burst into dust. Triumphant because that had been the goal, but disappointed because he now had a very well charged magical attack waiting to be dispersed and he had no target.

Whoops.

He tried to direct the earthquake down the alley, the magic needing to be released. He would lose control of it and it would just do what it wanted if he waited too long. The area started to shake as a large crack opened up in the floor, splitting the alley almost in half and racing out into the street. At the end of the alley a lamppost tilted. It wasn't the worst he had ever done, at least.

Pieces of the buildings around them started to fall down, from the rattling and shoddy worksmanship, but nothing big enough to add to their already rough encounter.

Chaonis, unaffected by the earthquake, looked back to see Hayden, grinning from ear to ear. It was almost as dangerous to be rescued by Chaonis as it was to be in trouble in the first place.

"Hey, who you calling?" he asked, though he was already moving to the nearest building to climb up and get away from her, in case the cops were on their way or something. Or she was looking for a photo op. But she was walking away and he arched an eyebrow at her back, then climbed up the building. He stopped once he was up there, calling down.

"You're welcome."

And then he bounded off.
