Leather boots left a crisp trail of footsteps on the desolate sidewalk as Hayden ambled back to her dormitory. Flittering snowflakes nested on her hair, unprotected against the drizzling snow. After a while the flakes began to form an amusing pile on her head and eventually she would likely shake off the snow, her ponytail and bandana flailing. Her hands constantly covered her mouth so that her warm breath could heat up the gloveless skin. She had heard of a small gathering at a nearby café and hastily decided to join the group, but stupidly forgot her knitted gloves in the process.

Hayden attempted to stuff her hands into her thin jacket’s pockets, but found no solace. She frowned and returned to perpetually keeping her hands warm by breathing on them. It wouldn’t be too long until she could stumble back into her cozy dorm, though.

Her mind filled with the lovely thought of squirming into the covers of her bed and reluctantly doing some study—as demanded of her parents—but it all dissipated when Hayden spotted an unusual girl up ahead.

The stranger was completely cloaked in light blue that perfectly blended with the snow.

Until Hayden noticed her skin was an icy blue as well. Blinking, she stopped in her tracks and eyed the supernatural being. This was not a human, not a normal human, her brain quickly concluded. She watched the snow woman gracefully prance through the streets. Nor did it seem to hold violent intentions, she quickly added. “Hey!” Hayden called out immediately. It never occurred to her that maybe it was safer to walk away rather than interact with the strange lady.

xxxxxGwenliana twirled through the campus of the school, throwing flurries of snow, which then twinkled down to join their friends on the ground. She was dancing, but it felt as normal as walking to her. Meanwhile, all she could think about was Lumiere's haunting words, "They seem to be exclusive to your kind, regretfully." Gwenliana had met many inhabitants of this place, but so far none of them had revealed the truth behind those words. Was she really so different? Gwenliana couldn't figure it out. She couldn't figure any of this out.

xxxxxBut fortunately for Gwenliana, she had no time to think about it, as another one of these ... people ... had noticed her graceful twirl. They all seemed so very weirded out whenever they noticed her. At least, at first. However, this one seemed very strange. It openly called out to her, a sign of welcoming. Perhaps a potential friend? Thinking back on it, Gwenliana had gained many friends and acquaintances in Destiny City, but she still knew nothing about this place. She was like a newborn child, with the body of an adult, really.

xxxxxShe examined the girl from afar, so as to not scare her very quickly. From the distance she was standing, Gwenliana could see that the girl had long black hair, which was tied up by a piece of cloth. She seemed very cold, but then, Gwenliana didn't know what cold was anymore. She seemed to feel fine, but everyone in Destiny City seemed to be freezing.

xxxxxWith one final pirouette, Gwenliana took off. She barreled down the street in the most graceful, beautiful way possible, leaping and twisting over the sidewalk and field that were in her way. Finally, she stopped a few feet in front of the girl, and looked at her in the most curious way. She has quite a bit of hair on her head, was all that Gwenliana could conclude. Curtsying very politely, she bowed her head low and said, "Hello there. My name is Gwenliana, pleased to make your acquaintance." With this, she pulled herself out of the curtsy and curtly continued, "Is there a reason you called out to me?" She did this with a smile, happy to have someone to talk to. Her little dress fluttered in the slight breeze that picked up, drizzling snowflakes onto the ground generously. A small pile had begun at her feet, but she payed it no mind. She quite liked the smell of snow, and if it was at her feet, so be it. She was not one to question mother nature.

The woman named herself Gwenliana and Hayden could only wordlessly stare on. She piqued Hayden’s interest, but the frosty snow was also permeating her thoughts. Her hands tightly pulled on the ends of her scarf, which had loosened its hold around her scrawny neck. “Pleasure to meet you,” she eventually replied, her tone a mix of hesitation and curiosity.

She shook her head, her smile hidden behind her scarf. “No particular reason,” she truthfully admitted, “I’ve never seen you around town before.” Hayden turned silent for a moment. “You look underdressed for the weather, aren’t you cold?” She took a few steps toward Gwenliana; they were slow and cautious at first, but quickly grew more confident and eager to get a closer look at the dancer. “Your skin looks exactly like ice. I wonder why.” With a care, Hayden leaned forward, but did not dare to actually reach out and touch her chilly skin—at least not yet. “I would’ve thought it was a tattoo, but it looks too real to be that. Are you even human?” She casually posed the question to Gwenliana, confident in her observation.

xxxxxGwenliana looked a little stricken back when the woman did not introduce herself. She wasn't offended, simply surprised that the woman had not also told her name. She thought it was simply custom in this place. The woman did seem a bit scared of her though, but also a bit curious, so Gwenliana payed it no mind. She simply smiled and examined the girl closer. Now that she was but a few feet away from her, Gwenliana could see that the girl had a big scarf on, which hid her smiling face that was topped with black, plentiful hair. She had no gloves unlike the other Ainsleys she'd seen, and it was quite amusing for her. All of these curious things seemed to occur at once, and Gwenliana's head was positively spinning in a tizzy from it.

xxxxx"And I, have never seen you. So we are fair, yes?" Gwenliana responded to the simple comment with a simpler comment. However, when the girl asked about her clothing, Gwenliana drew a blank. She looked down at her petite dress and ballet shoes, and wondered what the girl meant. Certainly she was not underdressed, in fact, she was rather over dressed with formality. Technically speaking, any one who was wearing at least one article of clothing was overdressed from a naked person's point of few. As she continued to puzzle, Gwenliana said, "Hmm. No I suppose I'm not cold at all. Not cold at all..." She repeated the words as she tempted to barrel through this newfound puzzle. "Well your skin looks exactly like ... exactly like ... like the flowers in Lumiere's garden!" she burst. Gwenliana wasn't exactly the brightest bulb, and she figured that all of the people in this town must know one another. How could one live in the same place as another and not be acquainted? Nodding her head, Gwenliana thought this response was completely appropriate

xxxxxMy, oh my this girl has quite a few questions to ask Gwenliana thought gleefully. Oh how she enjoyed having someone to talk to! However, as the girl continued to talk, it only sent Gwenliana further down the rabbit hole. "Tattoo? What is a tattoo? And human? I suppose I am," Gwenliana hesitated for a moment. Was she really a human? She was unsure, but wanted to the move the conversation along politely. To change the subject, she added, "Are you an Ainsley?"

“Fair indeed,” Hayden replied in a soft, amused voice. Hearing that she did not feel the snowy chill at her, her eyebrows perked up as she continued to examine the peculiar creature. Sure, Gwenliana looked human enough, but Hayden’s internal radars were screaming that she was clearly not human.

“Lumiere? Well, I’m absolutely flattered,” she thanked, though she honestly had no clue who the other girl was referring to. The name sounded feminine and Hayden could only assume that Gwenliana was talking about a girl who grew pale flowers, but that was as far as she could deduce. “A tattoo is basically a picture on someone’s skin and it doesn’t go away, no matter how many tries you try to wash it off with soap or water,” she attempted to explain. She was unsure what the dictionary definition of a tattoo was, but this was close enough.

Ahhh. This woman did not seem to be very educated. “No, I’m not an Ainsley. I’m a ‘Hayden’, but also a human. Ainsley is also a human,” she explained. Strange. The chill in her fingers were gone now. Perhaps she was far too entertained to pay attention to the weather. “Humans are people that look like me or Lumiere or Ainsley. They come in lots of different appearances, but humans feel that this weather is really cold and do not have ice-colored skin.”

xxxxxGwenliana watched as the woman sized her up, and in turn, continued to do the same. She looked rather innocent, but then, Gwenliana was poised to escape at any moment. But fortunately (or perhaps, unfortunately) Gwenliana had become quite found of humans as of late, and was very at ease with this one as well. Gwenliana smiled at the woman being flattered. The snow dancer appreciated her politeness, even if she seemed a bit baffled by what Gwenliana was saying.

xxxxx"A ... picture?" she questioned, "What sort of picture? And where does it go?" So many thing Gwenliana felt to ask, and unfortunately for Hayden, they all came out at once. All of these concepts were new to Gwenliana, and her mind processed rather slowly.

xxxxxGwenliana stooped down and listened for a moment, trying to take in all that the girl had said. So Ainsleys were not Haydens. And humans were ... Gwenliana's thoughts all jumbled together in a heap, and she tried to sort them all back out. Biting her lip, Gwenliana said, "So you're definitely not an Ainsley? And you're both humans? But only you are a Hayden?" Gwenliana's eyebrows twitched in frustration trying to put it all together. Not wanting to sound ignorant, she sort of continued and babbled, "But if a human looks like you, why am I also not a human? You said they come in different appearance... is blue skin not a different appearnance? And what feels cold to you, couldn't it feel warm to someone who lives elsewhere? And what about those who live in warmer climates?" At this point, all logic had ceased to exist and Gwenliana was beginning to just spout out whatever came to mind at the moment.

“Somewhere on your body,” she stated matter-of-factly. Hayden pointed to her bare hands and briefly rolled up the sleeves of her battered coat. “Here, or here, anywhere with bare skin is a good spot.”

She frowned at the information overload she was giving the snow dancer, but at the same time was sadistically satisfied. “Truthfully, ‘Ainsley’ and ‘Hayden’ are just names, like how you are ‘Gwenliana.’ Therefore, it is possible to have another Gwenliana or another Ainsley,” Hayden explained, taking back what she had said a while ago. “Blue skin is a different appearance, but humans do not have naturally blue skin. Blue skin is either from things called paint, tattoos, or other methods.” Hayden laughed, pleased that she was not another being that simply accepted ideas presented to her. “They’ll still think it’s cold, but they won’t think it is as cold as I think, or they might think it is colder than I think. Either way, they’ll think snow is cold.”

She shifted her weight onto one of her legs while she bent the other. “Actually, humans also have other things. Such as DNA—deoxyribonucleic acid—which is made up of the four---“ Hayden, finding it funny to confuse Gwenliana even more, began to explain science to her.

Oh God.

xxxxxGwenliana nodded with satisfaction at Hayden's explanation of tattoo placement. It seemed very reasonable to her, and so she accepted it instantly. She wondered if she had tattoos, and took a quick glance at her body. She didn't see any pictures, perhaps they were hidden. Only coming out in the sunlight or something? Regardless, Gwenliana accepted her theory, and clapped happily with understanding.

xxxxxAgain, Gwenliana nodded as she listened to Hayden attempt to explain things to her. "Ah, I see, they are names!" she gleefully clapped and squeaked, "That makes much more sense, thank you kindly." But as she continued, Gwenliana was confused once again. "But if someone has blue tattoos all over, does that not make them ... unhuman?" She rubbed her chin gently as she attempted to solve these mysteries presented to her once again. "So snow it cold. Then why does it feel nice to me?" she questioned. Though she couldn't understand why, perhaps the human had an answer. Gwenliana smiled to herself as she used her new vocabulary to describe the person.

xxxxxBut unfortunately for Gwenliana, the human seemed to like confusing her (whether it was on purpose or not was unbeknownst to Gwenliana). "Deo ... what?" she stumbled. Gwenliana rubbed her temples and her eyebrows were beginning to crease. All of this new information was so taxing. On the inside, she was loving every minute of it- she was a naturally curious being. But there is only so much that one brain could take before it hurt too much...

“No, because the tattoo was put on and is an unnatural method of coloring the skin,” Hayden denied with an amused shake of her head. She slipped into a long moment of silence as she closely watched Gwenliana’s confused expression. Her eyes narrowed and her lips pulled into a tight frown. “You’re not human, that’s why,” she answered curtly and with utmost seriousness. St. Magdalena girls loved to brew gossip and exaggerated tales of monsters and oddly-clad people running around town did not escape Hayden’s keen ears. Normally she would have brushed off the rumors, but crisp news clips and constant monster sightings convinced her otherwise.

“Well, I’m almost one-hundred percent sure you’re not human!” Hayden amended as she suddenly turned cheery. “I won’t know for sure unless I cut you open, which would be terribly unpleasant for us both.”

“Deoxyribonucleic acid,” she patiently repeated. “It’s like the instructions for making a human unique from the rest of the other humans. You’ve seen how each human looks different from everyone else around them, right?” Hayden shrugged. “Calling it DNA is just fine, though. Anyways, the shape of DNA is like a twisted ladder, with sugars as the sides and bases as the rungs. The bases are what decide how a human will look like, but it all depends on the order of the bases.” She droned on and on, looking bored yet entertained as she lectured to the clueless Gwenliana.

xxxxx"Hmmm," Gwenliana said, "Well I don't remember ever receiving one of these ... tattoos? Maybe I was just born with it. Oooh that would be so terribly exciting, wouldn't it? Worlds only blue ... what was it you said?" Gwenliana tapped her chin for a moment and then lit up, as though receiving a gift from a beloved family member. She opened her mouth and said, "Human! Yes that's it, human." She clapped her hands together, and smiled wide at her ability to recall such difficult information. But her smile faded when she heard the girl call her inhuman. "S-so I am not ... human?" She tried to hide her dissatisfaction, but most definitely did not prevail. At the mention of cutting her open Gwenliana tilted her head and said, "Well ... I think all you would find is snow!" Snow was what came out of her hands and twinkled off her dress. Shouldn't that mean it was inside of her as well?

xxxxxSuddenly Hayden had turned Gwenliana's world even more upside down. "Deo ... d-deox ... what?" Hayden continued speaking, describing the structure of DNA intricately and how it changed the human. None of it made sense, and Gwenliana's head was reeling. "I-I'm sorry, I'm afraid I really don't know what you m-" Gwenliana started but was interrupted by a strange sort of buzzing. Gwenliana jumped back a step or two, and looked around anxiously. "Wh-what was that?" she said, tearing up a bit- but only a bit! Gwenliana really was not the type for fighting or danger of any short.

Hayden shook her head. World’s only blue non-human was a more fitting title. “Miss . . .” She paused, eyebrows furrowed and lips pulled into a childish frown as she realized she did not know the snow woman’s name. “You are, indeed, not human.” As if to double-check, she looked Gwenliana up to down, head to toe. If she had been a black-and-white photo she would have appeared like any other human, but the translucent, icy skin said otherwise.

She cracked a smile. “I wouldn’t be surprised if I did find snow inside of you,” Hayden agreed, though in the back of her mind she did not believe the answer to be so simple.

There was the familiar buzz of her cellphone vibrating, coupled with the nostalgic tune of Wicked’s “Defying Gravity.” Curiously, she reached into the back pocket of her pants and slipped out the phone, flipping open the lid. Recognizing the familiar letters that spelled out the name of her parents, she sighed and pressed the phone against her ears. “Yes. I’m fine. Yes.” Hayden’s voice softened as soon as she detected the worried tone in her mother’s voice. Talking gently, she began to walk past Gwenliana. She mouthed a quick apology to the girl and waved her goodbye. “Let’s meet again, okay? Oh, this is a phone, by the way. Get someone to tell you about it!” Hayden said, covering the mouthpiece of her phone before returning to consoling her mother.

xxxxxGwenliana opened her mouth to say "Gwenliana" but was quickly interrupted by the jingle of the "phone." She wanted terribly to ask many questions, but figured it simply wasn't the time. Instead she preoccupied herself by glancing at the surroundings- all of which were coated in a fine layer of snow. Trees, strange metal things, houses, the grass- all of it coated in pretty, delicate snow. Gwenliana twiddled her fingers and played with the fringe on her petite skirt, making snowflakes fall everywhere. She really was anxious to know more about this human business, but knew- just knew- the girl would get angry if she interrupted. Hayden had already looked rather upset at the sight of Gwenliana's apparent misunderstanding.

xxxxxBut suddenly the girl named Hayden began to walk away, interrupting all of Gwenliana's thoughts. At first, Gwenliana hurried to catch up with her, as she thought it was an invitation to walk with her. Happily she half walked-half floated across the icy sidewalk in an attempt to catch up with the bob of black braided hair in front of her. Unfortunately, Gwenliana's face fell moments afterwards when she realized Hayden was leaving her. The frown on her face was enough to show that Gwenliana was upset. But she wasn't bitter, really. She was more sad that there had been so much to learn- and now that knowledge was lost.

xxxxxGet someone to tell me about it, Gwenliana thought, a little angrily. I'll get someone else to tell me, easily. With that, Gwenliana skated off without another word, in search of someone else, someone nicer. Perhaps I can find Ainsley out in the cold, she thought. The thought of Ainsley sent a little happy shrill down Gwenliana's supposed spine. She decided to head away from this upsetting Hayden girl, in hopes of happier company. However, before she left, Gwenliana took a quick look behind her and blue a shrill, cold wind in Hayden's direction. Smiling, she skated off towards the park.
