Layren walked around the festival. His wings folded back and as close to his back as he could get them. He was walking around with his mom, or at least he had been. They were supposed to meet up with his father but during the commotion earlier he had let go of Nasai’s hand. He was supposed to be slowly working his way towards there meeting spot. A place they picked just in case they got lost from each other, but there were so many interesting things that he kept getting side tracked. When he wasn’t getting sidetracked he was getting stopped by people handed things. A prime example was the chocolate bat he was nibbling on.
Quilo scowled in the direction of a hooting senior who had hurled a plush at his friend's head. "There are nicer ways to give people things, y'know!" he shouted at them. They ignored him, but he didn't notice--he was too busy rushing to Ella's side to help her up. "I like your plushie!" he said. He waved his identical one. "It's really cute!"
They were nearly at the doorstep of the haunted house now. It was a small, old cottage that lay on the edge of the park that hosted the festival. It had been abandoned some years ago, but obviously someone had been around to do renovations. The evidence for this was a brass plate on the wall saying
"ECKLA BEAN RESIDENCE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF ASPHODEL GARDEN"
The sign had been covered with fake cobwebs, as had the rest of the house. Oh, that was even better than what Quilo had expected! A Demon in a spooky outfit stood by the door. "Do you children dare the Haunted Hoooouusee~?" she chanted.
Quilo narrowed his eyes and nodded decisively. "Yes. We do dare. It's why we came! To dare your haunted house."
The Demon's lips twitched and she made a sound like a raspberry. Quilo realized that she couldn't be much more than nineteen or so. Still pretty old, but not as old as her make-up made her look! "Well, I'm complimented," she said. "No running in the house, no touching anything unless you're prompted to. Have fun, and be safe."
Quilo nodded. "We can do that!"
"I'm counting on you," she said gravely. With that, she handed him a candy and stepped aside to let the trio through the door.
"What do you mean by 'real'?" she asked. She knew what the word mean, but what did it mean? In this context, that is. She was real, and so was Ganymede, unless she was still freezing to death somewhere... No. She was real. She was really here, barefooted and dressed as a barebones and having the time. Of. Her. Life. She followed him in the indicated direction, lost in thought.
Ustule honestly couldn't remember the last time she'd had so much fun. Well, besides the last festival she'd gone to, but this one was even more fun! There was less dancing, less ritual, less storytelling, but then again, there were sweetmeats... And that had to count for something! And of course, those tiny little plushies. What would she name six bats, anyway? She knew one should be called Bate, that was obvious. She'd probably name one Flush or something, and Peel was a good name for a bat. But that was three names, not six.
She held up her bucket to a passing adult. "Trick-or-treat!" she said. She looked up hopefully at them. Maybe they would have the last prize she needed to complete her collection?
She squealed with delight as a blue and green plush dropped in her bucket. She'd done it! She'd gotten all six! She twirled on her foot, then stopped, recomposing herself. That was unseemly behavior right there...
Neptune became more visibly flustered with the kiss. Sara suppressed a giggle. He kept doing that! She didn't know why he would get so flustered when she showed him affection. Maybe she was supposed to be more subtle about it? She knew that modern Grimm tended to be more restrained, but that was in Zephyros, and Neptune was raised in Euros, at least she thought he was, but it didn't matter either way and oh mah god, Sara, yer brain's on automatic! She brushed it aside. "Sorry for embarrassin' yah," she said. "But don' worry, Pest will be--hey, no!"
She looked down to see that Pest had gotten into her bucket as well, munching away on an unseen turnip. She gently kicked the kidden, causing her to bleat in protest and drop the turnip. She gave Sara an indignant glare and the biggest raspberry she had yet seen from the little critter. Sara sighed. "Ah didn't mean it like that, Pest. But you already had yer dinner, and now yer gonna be impossible t' live with."
She held out her bucket to a passerby. "Trick-or-treat?"
The passerby dropped a couple of objects into Sara's bucket. She peered at the bats. Her little brothers would love these... But she looked back up at Neptune. "Ah have no ahdea what to do next. We could play some games 'r something?" She shrugged.
A little further on, people had made attempts to decorate their areas; at one site, a fake fire had been set up with a cauldron hanging by a hook over it. Fog, or possibly steam, rose and bubbled from the cauldron while a Geist and a Demon, dressed in long black robes and ridiculous makeup, cackled and recited spooky poetry. Xeno hesitated. Okay, this was a little too scary... but Jurvik squeezed his hand as if to tell him that it would be okay. Thus emboldened, he stepped out firmly from behind his father's leg and held out his bucket. "T-trick or treat!"
The witches ceased their chanting. In an instant, they turned back into regular Nightmares. "Awww, hello there! You're so cute!" one of them gushed.
"Happy Haunted Hallows!" the other said, and he dropped a bag of candy into Xeno's bucket. Xeno grinned. "Thank you!"
He shook his head, he wasn't embarrassed, per se... Something was definitely going on but he wasn't sure what. He just really liked it when Sara did that. "O-oh, no, it's okay...! I-I'm fine." He nodded, blinked in surprise at Pest. Oh boy. She really wanted those turnips, didn't she?
"T-trick-or-treat...!" He mimicked Sara, and earned himself a little lollipop. Nice! He couldn't remember if he'd gotten one of those before... He looked back to Sara and shrugged. "I supposed we um... we could, just around this g-general area... So Maria can s-see us." He nodded, then pointed to a nearby booth. "That looks fun...?"
He thought the meaning behind that was obvious, but apparently not. He glanced back at Ustule, it wasn't like Vaden was going to go anywhere. He seemed busy talking to someone. A girl. Who wasn't as old as he was but was definitely older than himself. She had better not be moving in on Vaden as a potential big brother too, the spot of little sibling was taken.
"You know. Real. From the place they're supposed to? Had actual parents and all that?" He shrugged. "I mean not all of 'em got them still but it makes them more real that the rest of us that just get to learn about where we're from second-hand." He blinked, assuming that explanation was blatant enough.
He joined in the treat begging once more, earning himself a new bat plush. Ohoh, she'd gotten the "last" bat. Time to play a little Haunted Hallows trick~ "You almost got all of them now huh? Just missing the purple one." He nodded, tone flat as usual with no indication that he was lying.
The next booth over housed a token tossing game. Bowls of water were set up on a table three feet away from the front counter. Players got three tokens and tossed them into whichever bowls they chose. Each bowl had a prize associated with it: either a trick, a treat, or a plushie. It was a game of chance and a game of risk. Callessa collected her tokens from the game master and took aim. She liked these sorts of games--they were a lovely mixture of blind luck and total control.
Her first token missed the bowls entirely. That was predictable, though frustrating. She made a face and tossed the next one. It landed with a splash in a bowl of water; the second landed in a bowl across the way from it. The game master looked over the bowls and smiled. "That's one trick--" Here he tossed her a glove full of popcorn. Why was that a trick? "--And a plush." He didn't ask her which she wanted--he just gave her the orange vespercat. She smiled and thanked him, waiting until she'd turned away to frown. She was hoping to get the green one...her little brother didn't care what color he got, but she liked to get him green things anyway. She was too old for plushies, but he wasn't, not yet.
She opened up the glove full of popcorn and tried a piece. Yetch! Stale! So that's why it was a trick...
Haunted Hallows had come at last! Yes, it was Eidil's favorite holiday at long last. Most years she arranged a fancy party with friends, but this year her friends were busy, or had crushes to go out with. So this year she went alone, dressed up as a bat, to the park where the festival was being held. Well, almost alone--her parents were there too, in the commercial section of the fair. They were there to represent the Academic Society of Asphodel. Technically, the Society was one of the hosts of the fair, but they still saw fit to have some information booths. Eidil waved to her neighbor, the gal attending the welcome booth and picked up a yellow plastic pumpkin pail from her. "What, no blue ones this year?"
The Imp laughed. "Nah! We went with green instead. Sorry, Eidil."
Eidil shrugged. "Not a problem. Happy Haunted Hallows!"
She skipped to the first booth, a ring toss game. She picked up a ring and flung it gaily over the poles. It hit one and spun down to the bottom. The game master raised one eyebrow and gave her a look, as if to scold her for being such a show-off. She blushed. "Sorry, and, um, thank you?"
The game master snorted. "Not a problem." They handed her a blue sugar skull. Blue! Her favorite color! Squee!! "Happy Haunted Hallows, miss."
"Thank you!! Happy Haunted Hallows to you, too!"
She skipped along the fair, holding out her bucket for candy and trick-or-treating until she saw a familiar head of golden hair. "Callessaaaaaaa!" She ran up to her friend and glomped her from behind.
Back at the festival, Lazarus looked around for something new to do. Surely there had to be something more to do now after he had gotten changed. Even if there wasn't, he wanted to play one more game before trying to get some more candy by going out and search for some. Not only that, but he kind of wanted to see if he could meet someone new and hang out with them tonight.

While he was looking around, some nightmare in a mask came running past him chuckling, tossing some sort of turnip to him before telling the baphomet to have a goodnight. Not knowing what that was about, Lazarus looked down at his little gift to figure out what this was all abo- WHAT WAS THIS?!
"AGHHHH!!!!" He nearly accidentally threw the disgusting and frankly disturbing turnip at someone, stopping himself before it managed to get too far away from his hand. Seriously?! Who would give such a thing to someone? This object was the thing of terrifying dreams!
While that last encounter had been confusing, Yihad felt it was time to get up and try to find another game to play. Perhaps an intellectual game this time. Hu was rather smart after all, and it only seemed like it would make sense to try one out!

It didn't take Yihad long to find a game to play, a simple math puzzle game no one seemed to want to play. Why was that? Math was actually fun despite what others said about it. Numbers were like a whole different language you got to learn, and Yihad liked that very much.
The game in itself was simple too. You pick three cards at random and then you need to put those cards on the board under one of the problems that it was the answer to. It was a really simple game, and Yihad had managed to get all of them right, which got hum yet another piece of candy.

Tarin considered what Quilo was going to name his. Startle. That made a lot of sense actually. Maybe she should name hers something along those lines? She was fond of things matching up. Made the world a little more organized. "What do you think about Astonish?" she asked having considered her options for words that went along with startle.
She looked over the haunted house and decided that she wasn't impressed. It looked...decent, but it wasn't all that scary.
She held up her bag to the Senior outside as they passed.

A handful of candy dropped into the bucket and once they were out of sight, Tarin made a face. It was that awful candy that no one on the face of this earth liked. Cheapskates.
After giving her adopted mother a nod to her question, Candy took a hold of her hand and lead her to the little hybrid's new home, showing Phyre her room for a bit which was rather empty at the moment ", Sorry it isn't too full of stuff yet. I wanted to go shopping with you so we could pick out stuff you would like to be in your room, okay?"
"Yes mommy," Phyre smiled up at Candy for a bit before noticing the most beautiful dress she had ever seen, and it was small enough for her! ", That my costume? It pretty!"
"Yes it is. Now let's get you in it and me in my costume for the night. Then we go out for more candy."
With their costumes now on and their new familiars left at home for now, the two made their way out for some late night trick-or-treating. So far Candy's time being a mother was going swimmingly well, and she wanted to keep it that way. Phyre deserved the best according to her, especially all the love and affection she could give to her adopted daughter.

As Candy lead Phyre to the first house they were going to go trick-or-treating at, Candy decided now would be a good time to explain to her what to do. This was the little hybrid's first Haunted Hallow's Eve after all, and she was sure that Phyre didn't know what to do.
Being told that she needed to say 'Trick or Treat' when a person opened a door, Phyre made sure to mutter it a few times before they came up to the first door, ringing the bell and waiting for the door to open ", Trick or Treat!"
After the two had been given their candy from the nightmare who lived there, Phyre looked through her bucket to see a huge lollipop ", It is so huge! Look Candy!" She held it up for her to see ", They got me this!"
"Well now, they must of thought you looked cute in that dress," The demon chuckled softly, looking in her bucket as well to see another plushie of sorts, and... some green gummy poo. At least Phyre got some good sweets here.

Pepper was surprised as the imp lurched forward, thinking maybe one of the bigger kids had knocked into him. To her surprise he turned and there was a small, brown, grimm child behind him. She couldn't stop the gasp that slid out as she saw that they had four eyes. Omigosh! "Sorry!" she whipped out quickly, not wanting them to think she was mean or anything. "Are you okay?" she addressed the question to the both of them. Her cheeks turned a minty green, the color of her hair, in her embarrassment.
"You don't have to trade if, if you really like it!" she told him. "I just don't really much like the sugar skulls," her tone dipped down to slight disappointment. "But I can always see if Auren or someone would want it if you don't." And now she had rambled on like a silly person and not even let him answer. As she was fussing she didn't notice an older nightmare dropping a chocolate bar into her pail.

Going by one of the booths Ares managed to snag a caramel apple from it. With a grin he bit into the sticky sweet and continued on his way. The crisp bite of the apple along with the sweet caramel was just what he needed. Even the fact that he had a pile of homework to do when he got back from his outing wasn't enough to deter him. Half of it had gotten done before he tried on his costume, so at least he wouldn't be stuck working all night to make sure it got done on time. Snacking on the apple, he quickly found himself something to lean on and be out of the way.
Watching the others at the festival, he noticed many were with freshlings or were younger students. "Hmm. . . .maybe I should have found a brat to parade around," he muttered between bites. "Then I wouldn't stick out quite so much." Thinking it over, he wondered if any of the haunted houses were understaffed. Yeah. . . there was sure to be one of them that was. As soon as he'd finished the apple he set off to find the nearest one with a grin. Surely he'd be able to finagle his way into participating in one of the houses. It'd be a fun way to spend the rest of his evening.

Caper tilted his head, not entirely sure about this other Freshling. He continued to admire the bracelet, feeling Evan's hand curl into his. He was about to offer Kiessi his name, but suddenly Evan was guiding him elsewhere. He gasped softly, looking to his mother, offering the black-haired other a short wave as they separated.
He continued his trick or treating, continuing up the path on a slightly different route. Evan seemed to be sidestepping the most obnoxious of the other Freshling, and the Geist was quietly thankful for that. He didn't care for loud and boisterous. He gathered a few more candies before suddenly - it was Kiessi again. He tugged at Evan, getting her attention before pattering over. "Hey!" he squeaked, waving his hand once at Kiessi before moving to chew on this thumb. "I - I'm Caper," he informed, not entirely positive the Baphomet realized they were being talked to. He lifted his eyes as the Nightmare before him tucked something into his pail, assuming he was there for goodies.
Caper blinked, pulling out the bracelet. It took a moment before he smiled a bit warmly. "Look, I got one too now."
"Trick or Treaaaaaaaaat!" Ix had just opened the door to a pair of freshlings, holding up their pail so high she couldn't even see their faces at first. Cooing at them about how impressive their costumes were, she grabbed a few treats to drop into each bucket and sent them on their way while a guardian nodded to her before walking after the kids.
Clever of them to hit up the apartment buildings. Lots of doors to hit up, not as much walking to do. Closing the door, she set down the bowl and grabbed a chocolate bat for herself before returning to her workroom. Draven
Some of the students that were wound up tight from finals and their classwork had started to blow off steam in the way some kids will. Students were lobbing candy or toys at each other, sometimes Drav saw those rock-hard whatever the hell they were, those candies wrapped in black and orange that never seemed to rot or anything, which was actually pretty painful to get smacked with. Using his wings as a shield, he joining in the fun for a bit before school staff came and broke them up, sending them on their way. He had been about to retaliate against a Bapho that had smacked him with a nezubat plush before the teacher had scolded them, so instead he walked away with it. Eh, might as well keep it, right? She'd gone back to her room to feed Eclipse and the puppy she had decided to keep, trying to be better at taking care of them rather than just letting the caretakers come into her room and do it. She was starting to get irritated with them, wanting a bit of independence from their constant attention.
When she entered though, there was a new plushie with a note attached to him, a happy haunted hallows from one of her favorite caretakers. Apparently he'd already come by to see to Eclipse for her and had left a gift behind. Tayce ran a hand over the batty for a moment and decided she'd keep him, and maybe not all the caretakers were annoying. Kazim
Kaz had been politely attacked by the elderly lady that lived on the first floor as he tried to hustle out of his building. Demanding he go put on a shirt, or at the very least zip up his coat to avoid a chill, he raised his hands at the old coot in a placating gesture before doing as she bid.
He was actually kinda fond of the crazy old bat, finding her an interesting part of his typically monotonous weekdays. She called after him, asking about his classes and if he'd found a nice Nightmare to settle down with and didn't she have just the granddaughter that would teach him how to take care of himself and why wasn't he eating more. Before Kaz could stop her she'd shuffled back into her house with her insanely huge and worn out slippers to come back with some sort of pudding cup? He wasn't sure. And a box of raisins for good measure, apparently, before she shooed him on his way. Eh, he wasn't about to to turn down free food in any case.

At this point they were starting to realize there wasn't really a need to go ToT'ing when just about everywhere there was people and places giving out candy or prizes for this or that. There was a meet and greet for other students his age, something held by the school Eli was sure. It was actually pretty boring until after they turned the kids loose with a 'thank you for coming' gift. Taking the plush, Eli milled about with some of the others, talking about what their plans were for the holiday and getting to know some of the students from other houses.
