Herald

This was a very difficult decision, but I have discussed it with past owners as well. For many, it is probably not that surprising - and I do hope no one feels blind-sided by this announcement.

After many happy and exciting years, Heralds will be closing.

We discussed the option of finding a new owner, redoing the whole shop and such, but feel that this is the really only option left. We have tried many things to stay afloat - new owners, artists, bringing in new blood, etc - but things came up and the shop fell to the side. The B/C environment that the shop was based on in its creation is completely different and as other shops declined - Heralds did too.

We are not just leaving everything as-is. You have three options.
1) Leave everything as-is.
2) Refund: this would be based upon how much you paid and the ratio remaining on any unfinished art.
3) Custom-Semi-custom (depending on what type of Herald you have) ADULT (or teen if that is all you want) art.

The plan is to get what people want and get them done asap. Refunds I can get to fairly quickly (once I do the math). Art will take longer - and if your artist no longer works here, I will do everything in my power to find another artist or even commission if able.

August 1, 2012 - deadline for getting things resolved as timely as possible.
August 1-15, 2012 - I will send out a PM and this is the resolute "timely" response. After that it may take a little while (art).
December 31, 2012 - SOLID DEADLINE. I may or may not ever get to it again. That is over 7 months away.

*Note - those Heralds that were on the "adult-grow" list and don't have art finished can take one of these options. Adult Heralds' art is complete and there are no other options there.

I will miss this shop dearly, and it will always have tender memories in my heart.

rules

• Don't steal the art! We work very hard on these, and if we find them used without our permission, you will be reported to a mod - not to mention Breedables can be a cold, cruel place for thieves. On that note, don't use stolen art as your guardian picture, for your journal, or for your custom Herald references. If it's not yours, don't use it.

• PM either the mule or kotaline if you have shop business, none of the other staff should be PMed without their express permission.

• Don't beg! If there's not one available, that's it. Wait for another chance.

• No drama. Whining, fighting, and flaming will get you greylisted, especially if you are being disruptive to the rest of the thread.


roleplay rules

• Yes, you must roleplay these! If your Herald is neglected, you will be PMed a warning after 3 months with no posts, and after 6 months, it will be NPC'd, and have its sacrifice made available to others again. For the full activity rules, click here.
• You may co-own with only one other person. If one parent is found to be neglecting his or her duties, the other will receive full custody.
• No two of the same item may be sacrificed! Keep that in mind when choosing your object and check the ownerslist carefully!
• You won't actually be giving us an item - merely a picture of it that we put in your journals. Therefore please get the artist's permission before using the picture, if you're having something drawn; this is easily done by asking when ordering the picture. Of course this isn't necessary if you are the artist.

general roleplay rules

• No one-liners (unless you're just goofing off in the shop thread).
• No god-moding. (i.e. taking control of another Herald, having your Herald know things your Herald shouldn't know, being too powerful).

herald roleplay rules
• You will have certain prompts that you will be expected to respond to. The first few will be the same for all Heralds; later on they may be tailored to your Herald specifically.
• There is no time limit on journal prompt responses. Keep in mind your Herald will not grow without them. The staff will post in the thread when they have updated your prompt.
• Owners who roleplay often and over the limit will find themselves with some perks. What kind? Your Herald may become central to a plot. Or you may have more control over the Herald's appearance, even if he or she is not a custom. Or maybe they'll even be nominated to grow the the mystery stage! Perks vary, but if you're consistently active, you will be recognized for it.

Q. How do I get one?
A. Through flatsale, auction, or event.

Q. How about pet trades? I'll trade you my flying monkey for one!
A. We will very very rarely will accept a pet trade. You may try temping an artist, but that is entirely up to them, and they need permission from a manager before it can be finalized.

Q. I can't afford it! It's too expensive!
A. A lot of work goes into these, and the sale costs were considered in that. If however you win a flatsale but don't have 15k, we can work something out. The only requirement is that 4.5k get paid up front.
Note this is only for flatsales, and not auctions or events.

Q. How often do they change?
A. It depends on how long it takes you to complete roleplay requirements for growth and how long it takes the artist drawing your Herald to finish them.

Q. Do I have to keep them in my sig?
A. No, it isn't a requirement to keep them in yours sigs/on your homepage. Just keep an eye on them and update your journal regularly. It is, however, encouraged.

Q. How many can I own?
A. Three at the most. Two that you purchase/win in a contest (the first one MUST be an adult before you can try for a second), and one offspring from a breeding.

Q. I want to help! Is there anything I can do?
A. Check the very first post to see if positions are open. Rare exceptions may be made, but it would have to be due to a Heralds metaplot event or something.

Q. I am an artist. Someone has commissioned me to draw an item to be sacrificed. How exactly will the art be used?
A. The artwork will be placed in the Heralds journal, but it will not be otherwise used or altered by this shop. Your name will remain on the artwork, and you retain all rights to it. The item does determine the Herald's appearance, but no part of your drawing will be directly reproduced in the Heralds themselves.

Q. May I join the guild?
A. Once you've proven that you're dedicated to Heralds by chatting a lot in the thread (or if a staffer can vouch for you) then definitely. Just arrived? Don't request until we know you a bit better.

Q. I'm in the guild, but I'm not a Herald's owner. Where am I allowed to post?
A. First thing you should do is read the Rules/Regs announcement in the guild itself. Non-owners may roleplay characters, and even characters from other ICly Gaia-based shops if they'd like. Non-owners may also post in the journals, providing the owner gives permission.

Q. I want to affiliate. How do I do this?
A. PM Herald with your banner.

Q. How do Heralds breed?
A. All breeding information is located in the breeding post.

Q. Can Heralds have special powers? Or are they just humanoid with wings?
A. Yes, if the owner wishes for them to. Powers must be logical with the item sacrificed (think Shayna having control over fire), or logical as a result of an event early on, particularly during the Messenger Reborn stage, when Heralds are like little sponges. They also can't be too powerful, no new gods on Earth!

Q. Heralds are all angels? Eeew, doesn't that mean they all have to be nice all the time?
A. NO. Heralds can be good and bad, outgoing and shy, courageous and cowardly...You get the idea. It all depends on how you RP them. We prefer variety, constantly nice characters are boring!

Q. Do you accept guest artists at all?
A. Yes, we do! PM kotaline if you're interested. Please keep in mind, however, that art must be up to the standards of the rest of the artists in the shop.

Q. Can I use a sacrifice that is or a part of another shop?
A. Yes, as long as you get permission from the shop and artist(s) involved. Once you give us an item sacrifice, we at Heralds assume that you have received this permission. If there are any problems, it is the Guardian's responsibility, not ours!

Words are important.

Whether a confession of love, an admittance of guilt, a cry of surrender, or a plea for forgiveness, words can change lives, and often the words that change lives the most are the words that are left unsaid. The potential in even the most simple silence is electrically charged, and the message that is undelivered may cause most harm or withhold needed comfort. Heralds are messengers sent to deliver those words when there's no other chance of receiving them, beings from the sky who change the world person by person with the messages they're sent to deliver. However, a Herald can only deliver one message, and then they're stripped of their wings. Powerless without the energy of the words they delivered, they fall to the ground, some to their deaths, others to a new chance at life.

For there is life for these fallen messengers, if the right person is willing to sacrifice some new thing for them to draw power from, a token that someone still desires them to live which gives them purpose and strength to be born anew. Will you sacrifice something so a Herald can be reborn? Are you able to accept the responsibility if you do?

Your Herald's appearance as you progress through their stages will depend entirely on how you roleplay them. They will always remain humanoid, however some may incorporate more aspects of their sacrificed object than others. For instance, if you sacrifice a fox they may grow ears and a tail somewhere during adolescence. Or if you sacrificed something mechanical, random wires might start sprouting out their neck. The roleplay concerning the sacrifice will be in response to a RP prompt which will be posted in your journals, however the item you sacrifice is something that is either determined for you in a flatsale or something you decide beforehand for a custom or semicustom.



stage one

The first stage is a wingless, genderless Fallen Messenger who needs someone to sacrifice an item to it or perish. The art for all fallen messengers is the same, and can be seen here.


stage two

If the item has been accepted, the messenger is reborn as a young boy or girl, but still has few distinct features apart from their newly sprouting wings. They're a blank slate, new to everything in the world and highly impressionable. All messenger reborn art is on a premade base, and only the wings will be unique from other messenger reborns. All messenger reborns have white hair and blue eyes, which will only change in stage three.


stage three

Depending how you raise them, your child starts to develop unique characteristics based on your descriptions from your journals, sacrifice, and roleplay. The wings will also gain more aspects of the sacrifice and grow. From this stage onwards, all art is completely original to your Herald.


stage four

At this stage, your Herald will be an adolescent, and almost independent! Their wings will be even bigger and more influenced by their sacrifice and they'll start to develop a more personal sense of style.


stage five

Maturity. Your Herald is no longer a child, but an adult ready to tackle the world on his or her own.


stage six

Rare special stage. Little is known about this...but one thing is for certain: only Heralds that have been loved deeply for a very long time can transcend to the sixth stage. Many never will.

event information

• You must RP your Herald if you win! These are RP-heavy breedables, so please make sure you understand the time commitment and read the activity requirements, found in the rules post of this thread.

• You must choose an item to sacrifice to save your Herald, but keep in mind that no two of the same item may be sacrificed. So check the ownerslist carefully, and keep your sacrifice original and creative, especially if you're entering it in a flatsale! An unoriginal sacrifice can be the difference between winning and losing a concept contest.

• For those concerned about sacrificing animals, no worries! The item is simply absorbed, not destroyed.

• You won't give us an actual item when you sacrifice, only the picture of it for your Herald's journal.

flatsales

Flatsales cost 15,000 gold, although a payment plan is available if you can't pay. These are the most common type of sale, and every flatsale will have up to 3 Heralds up for grabs. Flatsales generally have set themes with pre-decided sacrifices unless stated otherwise.

auctions
Artists decide when they have their own auctions and what they auction off. Usually it's customs, but sometimes it could be a special Herald. Auctions usually have no autobuy and go to the highest bidder.

events
Sometimes it's possible to obtain a Herald through a metaplot or a special event such as a raffle or concept contest. All events are different and they're rare, but usually you'll be able to get a special Herald for less gold than an auction if you manage to win. Meta events are also the only way to get a plot-important Herald unless your Herald is made into a plot-important Herald through dedicated roleplay.

generation one

When an item is sacrificed to a dying Herald, a human factor is introduced, and therefore a gender is established. Interestingly, there is frequently little correlation between the sacrifice of "feminine" items producing female Heralds, and "masculine" items producing male Heralds.

Because of this human element, first Generation Heralds can have sexual intercourse like anyone else, beginning in their teens. But unlike humans, the simple act of sex cannot produce a child. The couple must be truly, deeply, bound to one another before this happens, and their angelic essence must be shared. Thus neither parent "carries" the child, per se; it is simply creating by the sharing of angelic essence, which occurs during a particularly emotional moment when the parents are at their closest. It COULD be during sex, but does not necessarily have to be. Keep in mind, RP must be PG-13. If this is the case, fade to black at the appropriate moment, please.

Also thanks to the introduction of a human element, Heralds may have as many different sexual partners as they desire, and may even have children with more than one Herald (though it would be rare that they would grow close enough for this to happen with two different Heralds).

Generation One may have a child with either the same sex or a different sex; sexual orientation is not a factor, since it is not the actual sex organs that are involved in the process.



generation two

Children of a Heralds breeding will have a traits of both parents, and essentially develop as any human would. No item is sacrificed. They are less vulnerable to inflictions upon their wings, but the wings are generally smaller, and some may even be unable to fly with them.

Second generation Heralds also start off as babies, as they were born naturally. Yes, that means all Generation Two Heralds have completely unique lineart.

They may have as many different sexual partners as they desire. Unlike the Generation One Heralds, children are produced by the physical act of sex, but again only when there is deep emotional attachment. This means that only heterosexual Generation Two couples may have children; but they are always free to adopt.



generation three

A conglomeration of genes, it is often difficult to determine by appearance the items sacrificed to the Gen 3's ancestors. Wings on the Generation 3 Herald are extremely small, if they appear at all, and they cannot fly.

They do start as a baby and are given birth to as any human is, after being carried 9 months by the mother. They have all unique lineart.

Thanks to a genetic dysfunction, Generation 3 Heralds cannot breed. They may still take sexual partners, but they are sterile.



breeding facts

• The pair must both be at least teens before having children. It is highly unusual that a strong enough emotional bond will form until adulthood.
• They have one child at a time.
• If the owners of the Heralds pair intend to keep the child, a sole owner must be determined in advance. Not to say both Herald parents cannot be actively involved in the child's development; but only a single Gaian can "own" the child.
• Children may be gifted to a non-owner or brought to the shop to contest off for a suitable player.

We won't keep actual breeding slots. When we think a couple is ready, we will extend the possibility to the owner.

familiars

A child escapes the horrors of home. She sits on the bench in despair, but a stray dog approaches and comforts her as no one else will.

A young man cannot believe she left. As he lounges by the cliff and listens to the waves crash against the rocks, a small squirrel approaches and offers him the nut she was saving for the harshness of winter.

Heralds are not the only ones that can deliver messages. Sometimes, a word or gift is not what it needed, so other creatures go forth with a different kind of message. Their language is obscure, but their messages are just as strong. They have the same fate. Once their message has been delivered, they will wither and die - another creature the world forgot.

Or has the world forgotten? If a sacrifice is offered then they will survive. Familiars do not get the strength of the Sanctum as the Heralds do. They do not grow and they are restricted to the intelligence they had before. But give a sacrifice to a dying Familiar, and you will have a companion for life, whether you two get along or not.

roleplaying your familiar

• You can roleplay your familiar in the guild.
• Their size is dependent on the animal they were before they were given a sacrifice. The sacrifice does not change how large they are! There will be no 10 foot squirrels. Sorry.
• Their intelligence is typical of the animal they were before they were given a sacrifice. This includes speech/cognition/etc.
• Sacrifices cannot be duplicated. Only one familiar can have that sacrifice, the exception being mass-made familiars for events.
• They can have a gender, but that is entirely up to you.


wtf heralds

The Herald loses their feathers on their final descent down to earth. Their message sent, their purpose is at an end unless a soul gives them a sacrifice. What of the feathers? Those perfect, white things that gave their Herald the greatest gift of all, flight. Surely, they were not forgotten!

It is so, they really were remembered and given as much chance as the larger Herald. The only problem is there are so many, and they are so small that most of them do not survive, meaning they cannot find a sacrifice.

One of the biggest differences between the sacrifice of a feather and a Herald is the manner it is given. A Herald must have someone willingly give it the sacrifice; a feather, with no sentient mind, "assumes" that whatever is the last thing it touches, if able, is its sacrifice.

When they are reborn, they look similar to a reborn Herald, only much smaller. They have the white hair, pale skin, and blue eyes. They have what could be called their wings.

No one knows what to call them. They are not Heralds. Moreover, it depends on whoever finds them to decide what they are called.

roleplaying a wtf herald

• You can roleplay your WTF Herald in the guild. Keep in mind, though, they are not Heralds.
• They are smaller, more like 'fairies'. They can range from six inches to one foot in height. The height of your personal WTF Herald is up to you.
• Their intelligence is up to the player. You may want to keep it at the level of their 'unwilling sacrifice' though. If the feather fell in food, it may not be as smart as a feather that fell on an animal or book.
• Sacrifices cannot be duplicated, the exception being mass-made WTF Heralds for events.
• They are genderless, but you can say that they resemble one gender more than another instead of always calling them 'it'.
