The journal before you has been well-cared for. It is bound in smooth, light-blue leather.
A string of similar leather circles around to keep the crisp pages protected.
Around the edge along the front and back cover and binding, there seems to be hardened stone.
Upon closer inspection, you find that it is something else. Not only that, a large gem is inset in the center of the front cover.
They are the same, and in the light they sparkle along the bends. It is a precious gem, one perfect multi-colored garnet.
Along the binding is spelled one word in wavy script: "Plato"

1.22.07

Your Herald has left his home and decided to stay with you instead.

Why did he leave? What was his previous Guardian like? Was he escaping something? Why did he chose you? Did you two know each other previously or did you meet randomly? What are his thoughts of you? Does he regret his decision? Is he, at this point, planning on staying with you indefinitely or is this just supposed to be a temporary arrangement?

STATUS - updated 8.05.10

After some years of lying low, using his charisma (along with cheap emotional manipulations) to coast from one couch to another on the mainland while he panhandled to earn food money, Plato finally got a break and was picked up by a group of dancers at an opera house. He still seems to prefer to sleep on someone else's couch, but he at least has enough money to put himself up in a hotel if he needs to, and can fill his own belly.

He still, of course, has a moral and philosophical objection to wearing shirt, shoes, or pants, except perhaps when a performance costume is required.

In his journal, Plato writes:
When does the process of rebuilding end, and the status of being rebuilt become achieved? Have I come that far yet - elsewise, how do I get there? Can a thing that is unmended dream of restoration, or can it only become something new....

Plato is one of those folks that can't seem to remember who he's supposed to be, and winds up living a life of contradiction. On one hand, he's an intellectual of some dignity; he dabbles in poetry and waxes philosophical to anyone who cares enough to listen, delighting in contests of wit. But he rejects an overindulgence in rationality, often preferring to seek the answer that feels right over the one that explains right. This seems to have led him around the usual need for a sense of shame; after all, Plato would argue, if you always do what feels right, why should you ever need to regret it later?

Perhaps it's because he's so careless in his pursuit of what he thinks is proper, that he's spent so much time living on the streets. He hasn't had his own bedroom ever since he moved to the mainland, in fact. As long as he has somewhere warm to curl up when it gets cold, Plato seems utterly unbothered with pedestrian concepts like having a "home"; it isn't as though he needs somewhere to stash his clothing, after all!

When it comes to self-perception, Plato's is second to none. He doesn't just think, but knows that he is in the right, even when he is pushing boundaries. If he ever worries how his actions will affect other people, he doesn't particularly advertise it. It's sure enough that he doesn't worry about taking advantage of others, and he regularly manipulates people into buying him a meal or giving him a place to spend a night when it suits him, often to little gratitiude.

For all his unorthodoxy and self-confidence, however, Plato is a touchy, emotional being. He doesn't bear insulting intentions well; he's guarded about his past, and open only with a few precious souls who have earned it. Petty feelings like fear and jealousy are quick to get the better of him, and wrapped up in all that feeling, he's liable to make short-sighted decisions.

You, too, are mortal.

Plato's Fall - at least, as he tells it - took place on a tropical island to the east of the Gaian mainland, one of those places so small and insignificant, you'd never realize it existed if they didn't have a beachside resort town. It came in the dead of night, over the eerie phosphorescent sea, and was paid witness to by only three souls; two unclothed vacationers that had the embarrassment of being caught by high tide on a rock off the island, and a local who was in the process of giving them a ride back on his motorsailer. Of these three, of course, only one actually had anything on their person in order to respond to the call for a sacrifice; and so it was the islander, Tithdaeron of the Eastern Isles, that fished the fallen Herald out of the drink and saved little Plato from an ignominious demise. Operating under the belief that such events did not take place without reason, Tithdaeron unquestioningly took the pale-skinned boy under his wing (so to speak), calling him his own son and teaching him the ways of island life.

Tithdaeron, or so Plato claims, saw some manner of heavenly wisdom in the child from a very young age. He took to giving the child a literary and philosophical background, educating him largely from old compendiums that he kept boxed up in his seaside home. Wherever Tithdaeron went, he took little Plato along, and taught him something from what was there; a little of everything on the island life. On long, lazy boat trips, Tithdaeron would pull the boy aside and whisper to him words in a musical language, and teach him about the deep woods that the elves were born from. When Plato seemed to grow a little more and more elf-like every day, his bemused Guardian decided to take a step beyond storytelling; he started to teach Plato some old songs, and old dances. The child didn't seem to be much of a singer, but his footwork was fine and lovely (for his age, leastwise).

Plato grew to be a handsome teenager before anyone really knew it. Even Tithdaeron, with his long years, hadn't expected his son to blossom so quickly. And from nearly the moment he grew, Plato seemed to make a hobby out of heart-breaking.

Guardian

PREVIOUS

Name: Tithdaeron
Gender: Male
Race: Elf of the Eastern Islands
Age: 84 - human equivalent, early 20's.
Occupation: Islander, tour guide, ship captain.
Hobbies: Sailing, diving, jewelery-making.

Status: Deceased.

Background:

CURRENT

Name: "Moonie"; registered name with the Gaia Kennel Club, "Moonstruck Baby Boy."
Gender: Male
Race: Talking Chihuahua
Age: 5, or thereabouts.
Occupation: Runaway showdog, professional stud.
Hobbies: Hoarding food, swearing unnecessarily, convincing pretty ladies to set him on their laps.

Status: On the prowl.

Background: Moonie spent the first two years of his life living the life of a canine idol. Top of his class in obedience school, with an impeccable pedigree, his doting owner - a Miss Eliza Grace, frisky bachelorette of 35 years - delighted in his purse-side company. It wasn't long at all before she began signing her baby up for the show circuit, and the blue ribbons started rolling in right away. Moonie was the picture-perfect dog; well-mannered, well-groomed (for all that he has no hair to groom), always ready to strut his stuff in front of judges and cameras alike. He swept through the regional awards, and was on his way to a very promising career as the Gaian Canine Champion, when Miss Grace made a horrendous mistake. She convinced a wizard to cast a spell of awakening, bringing her beloved pet to a human-like intelligence and awareness.

Exactly what Miss Grace expected this to do is unclear. Most likely, she was a lonely woman who had found something that made her life less lonely, and thought that this bit of spellwork would be the piece that would make her life perfect. Regardless of what the fiction in her mind was, the reality was simple enough: The moment that Moonie had enough awareness to look back on his life, he was overcome with shame and disgust. The moment he had a chance, Moonie trotted right out the doggie-door. He never looked back.

Although there were difficulties at first while Moonie settled into a life of his own. Learning how to get food for himself was the first challenge; he had to struggle, not just to use his newfound intelligence, but to learn when not to use it, when being just a dumb dog was going to get him more sympathy than a down-on-his-luck talking Chihuahua.

NOTE TO ALL PEOPLE I HAVEN'T RPED WITH YET: I like to RP for plot as much as anything. I also prefer to assume that our characters know each other, if only in a vague, "hey I met you at that one party" manner, unless there is good reason for them not to (like your Herald just arrived yesterday, or there's a good plot involving them meeting for the first time). Keep this in mind if you want to request RP with him!
