And more related to the discussion: I often wonder how many people that claim they hate the series have actually watched/read it (or are just trolling). :V If you have and you hate it, fine, but some people refuse to give it a chance generally because of the fanbase but honestly in reality if you do try to look for the right people you can have some good fun. :V

Hetalia is the new show to hate. You know, like Naruto and Bleach. People don't need a reason to hate it, they just do, because it's the thing to do.
There are people who will list reasons, but most of them take it far too seriously.

And Latvia firing their government reminds me of general badassry like this. Now imagine Lithuania in place of the mayor.

Well, to answer the poll question, it's a mix of character development and historical references. One of the things I love the most about this series is how flexible it can be. There's so much room for the fans to bring in their own knowledge of culture/history to develop the characters beyond what we get in the strips. I'm even okay with altering the canon details to a certain degree as long as the character's core personality is still in tact. And while I can certainly enjoy fics that have nothing to do with history...I love a good historical piece. It's my favorite thing to write too, although all I write lately is AUs and fluff...I wanna write some history stuff again...

You are not the first person to say that about this thread. I feel accomplished.

I really only like historical events as a setting, not a focus. Some people are really good at working it into their stories without it just turning into a history lesson. I swear I'm not one of those "Ew, history is boring" people, it's just not what I look for in fanfics. o_o In any kind of story, my focus is on the characters. It's a gift and a curse. 3nodding

That is the challenge, to incorporate history without lecturing. It's really just like writing historical fiction, I think. There are similar pitfalls to watch out for.

I've read so many spectacular historical fics... I could probably fill up an entire shelf with them, haha. I just wish more people would take the time to read them, as I'm sure they would find them to be very well-written and tasteful.

I love my AUs, too, of course. I have favorite authors who are just out of this world. *A*

This. I feel like historical fics scare people off sometimes...which is sad, because there's a lot of quality out there. But then of course AUs are fun. I just love how there's so much you can do with this series. heart

Hm... the closest thing I've written to historical fanfiction... I will not be sharing with you all. ._. It was about Latvia gaining freedom, but... er... I basically wrote it as a challenge to push myself to write things I wasn't comfortable with. And I'm sure there are inaccuracies all over and it's just really bad... I'm not a history buff, I thought it was pretty boring in school, I'm a horrible person... Blah. XP
I find pieces of history interesting. Just pieces, here and there. As a whole I find it to be very dry, or more often, very depressing.

It was barely historical. And there really wasn't much setting.
Like I said, a blessing and a curse. I can make convincing characters, they just sort of float around in a big nothing because I'm no good with setting. I even have to remind myself to write details like when they go to a different room or step outside. v_v
Maybe I'll make that a goal in my next story.

Oh god... Was looking through a fic. I completely forgot about this part. Which is funny, because it's my favorite part.

This is how I typically feel about the Hetalia characters. You see them sometimes doing casual things, just living, but I have to wonder how often that actually happens.Especially with countries like Latvia. He shares a border with Russia and Belarus, there's always tension with Russia, the government and economy are in the crapper... How often does the poor boy just get to live? I know it's not real, but it's still sad to think about.

Not gonna lie. I read the Hetalia fanfics pretty much for the gay/lesbian porn. emo
However, I do like a well written fanfic that doesn't do the whole cliche "have sex then fall asleep" crap.
Use your imagination, make it a little more kinky.
Anyway, I wish more people would read the Hetalia webcomics. Much more fun than the anime, in my opinion.
My favourite characters are Romano and Spain.

I think this is because, as Raivis of Riga was saying, it's can be a thin line between a history lecture and a historical themed story, and that frightens some people. I love history but it can be disconcerting for an author to focus too much on the history aspect and not enough on the story itself and the characters within that story. All it takes is one bad experience for people to be scared off from the genre and I believe that as with any kind of story there is at least five troublesome writers for every good one. But then again, there are also people who hear the word "history" and flee for the hills without ever giving that type of work a try. xp
