• I sat in the most uncomfortable seat of my life. Having a table attached to it did not help. I wiggled my body and bum until I was as comfortable as I could get. I yawned. I was not ready for this. I hated school. I’m not a morning person. And most importantly, I left everything I once knew because my mum wanted something new.
I stared at my homeroom teacher, Miss Griffin I believe, as she went on and on about having our parents sign some stupid papers for core classes. Ugh, I hate the first day of school. I slid my phone out if my sugar skull bag and unlocked it. I looked up at the lady in the front of the room going on about nothing, then back to my phone screen. I opened my Tumblr app and scrolled through it until I heard the bell ring. I groaned.
I didn’t want to be here in the first place. I walked out of the room and down the crowded halls of Wilson High School. I could feel the eyes of people staring at me. I wasn’t pretty, so I couldn't tell you why they were. It could be the way l’m dressed. I noticed girls here in this small town dressed rather preppy and beach like, where I am more in the British punk rock / my own twist to it kind of style. Or it could be ‘cos I am British and news here travels fast.
I would have been in my first year of UNI if mum would have never wanted to move. She decided on White Hills, South Carolina, USA. She wanted to live by the beach. There are plenty of beaches on the coasts of Britain, why not just move to one of them. Ugh.
So here I am, walking into my first period with these lovely people staring at me.
My hair is jet black with brown tones in it from where it has been dyed multiple times. My hairs naturally curly but I flat iron it straight, and it was to my shoulders. My eyes are brown, not the darkest or the lightest, their just brown. My skin is lightly tanned, like I lived on a beach, but I haven’t. I lived in Cheshire my whole life. That could be another reason people are staring. Hm. My mum is of European descent and my father is African American. (Yes, I know that makes me part American.) So I’m naturally tan.
I’m not fat, but I’m not skinny. I’m kinda like Christiana A., from The Voice, with Adam Levine. That man is all kind of sexy! Anyway, I’m probably her before the BIG weight loss, give or take.
Along with my black book-bag with colorful sugar skulls and red roses almost covering the black canvas, I had on my classic low top Chuck Taylor Converse with a pair of galaxy leggings that stopped at my calf muscles. For a top, I had on a plain black off the shoulder crop-top type shirt with an anchor cut out of galaxy print and a black tank top underneath.
I glanced down to the slip of paper that Miss Griffin handed to me when I walked into her class. Physics Honors. Well at least it is something I’m good at. I would take this over anything for the first class of the day. I walked into the room 205.
'Welcome to Physics Honors! Room 205 with Dr. Barwick.' Read the board in beautiful penmanship. I love people who write pretty. I took the stool closest to the window, the teachers desk, and an outlet. It just happen to be in the front row, not that I cared. I pulled out my fresh white binder, a my favorite purple pen, a black sharpie and my phone.
I doodled on my binder not noticing the fact that the bell had rung signaling class had started and somebody was beside me. I continued what I was doing until I felt a poke on my arm.
"Um, Anchor?" I looked up from my binder to meet a pair of dark brown eyes. "Hey, I’m Roman. But you can call me Ro." I nodded, shaking his extended hand. I smiled. He was cute. He had dark skin, a fresh close hair cut with thin lined sideburns that connected to the freshly trimmed chin hair and a light, freshly trimmed mustache above his dark plump lips. He kind of reminds you of Chris Paul, who plays for the L.A. Clippers. It was easy to see.
"Hi," I squeaked out, "Well I’m Anchor and you can call me anytime." I said, looking him dead in his eyes and winked.
"Forward. I like that." He chuckled and I started laughing along. "I would like to tell you that we will be partners for the rest of the semester. So, stay forward." I smiled again. "So you’re not from here." I nod. "That accent. It’s British." I nodded again. "Like a boss." He whispered-yelled.
"I have to say. I’m impressed. Most people stare at me. You’re the first people to talk to me." He just looked at me and raised an eyebrow.
"You got to be kidding me? Maybe it is your accent." He shook his head, "This school welcomes everybody with open arms." I sighed as he looked around the class. I took this time to do the same. My eyes met a lot of faces looking over at us. I quickly picked up my phone off the table and looked at the time. 9:17 am. Hmm.
"Where’s Dr. Barwick?" I ask, looking back at him as he put his phone into the little cubby that was cut out of the table.
"Late. It’s the first day. I had her for Physical Science last year, last semester. She was late then too. But it’s weird cause it’s only the first day of school, any day, even days when we have delays for snow or something, she’s here on time and early." He said, throwing his head back laughing. I know I just met him but gawd, his laugh!
"Wow." I mumbled out, more or less speaking of his laugh.
"Yeah." We sat there silently for a couple of minutes. That’s when something hit me.
"So how did you know my name was Anchor?" I asked, looking at him with an eyebrow cocked up.
"I didn’t. I saw the Anchor on your shirt and your drawing of this," he pointed to the anchor on my binder, "amazing one and so I just decided to call you Anchor." I nodded, as a lady in her early 30s walked into the room.
"Good morning class. I’m so sorry I am late." The lady said, "For all you who do not know, I am Dr. Barwick, and this is Physics Honors." She looked down at the paper. "Most of y’all know each other but we are still going to be doing introductions. We have a new student from Britain." I felt my cheeks heat up and Roman began to chuckle. "Anchor Poe. Please stand." I slowly rose to my feet. "Ah, Miss Poe. Come up here please." This made Roman chuckle even harder. I mentally groaned and physically smiled. I walked the short distance to where she stood, behind a long table with beakers, flasks and anything else you would ever need to mix chemicals. I stood beside her and faced the class. "Any questions for Miss Poe?"
A girl with long blonde hair stood up instantly. “Um, what kinda name is Anchor? I mean isn't that the rusty thing that hangs on to a ship and is dropped to stop it?” She finished and popped her gum. I rolled my eyes at her.
"Anchor is a name given to me by my mum because of what she has been through in her past. I was her quote unquote Anchor. I would rather be rusty than fake." I shot back, giving her a dirty look and she gasped. The bell rung right on time. I moved quickly back to my seat and put my things into my bag. Roman looked at me.
"Nice come back." He held out a fist which I happily pounded back. I was glad to have talked to him right now. I guess we are friends. "No one likes Cyndy anyway. She’s a hoe. Oh by the way, I got into your phone and added my number. I also followed myself on your Twitter and Insta and friended you on Facebook and made us in a relationship." I looked at him wide eyed. He held out my phone to me, which I quickly took back. "I’m just picking about the relationship thing." He chuckled. I stared at him wondering how he knew my passcode. "I watched you put it in." I sighed and lightly punched him on the shoulder.
"Stop being creepy or I won’t be in your relationship thingy on Facebook." We laughed as we walked out of first period, looking at each others class list.
