• My back turned. I stared at the thing in front of me. My jaw dropped low. I saw something I’d never thought I’d see. A really great friend.

    Chapter 1:
Well, here I am, chewing on my pencil in the middle of a Biology Test. Think, Kayla, Think! I told myself. The problem was harder than I was used to. Everyone else was bored of waiting on me. I was the only one who hasn’t finished. While they were learning, I was daydreaming of how I could get a friend and who it would be, and how she/he would behave toward other people. My thought broke as a loud oblivious alarm wrapped around my ear. “BEEP BEEP BEFP!!!!!” We all gathered in a jumbled mess that Mrs. Spring called a line. We all know this wasn’t a line. But Mrs. Spring was as blind as a bat, so most of the kids took advantage of that. Before I lined up, I grabbed my cell phone. It was laying right beside me on the hard floor. “Come on class. This is not a alarm they alarmed me about.” She said lacking sense of humor. We all stood there silent at the pathetic joke she just made. She noticed the silence and grabbed the class and we all ran outside to the building. Hmph. Well daydreaming is starting to get a little boring. I thought randomly. I sniffed. This is a real alarm! I smell smoke! And right on queue was the fire-truck blazing it’s bright red alarm toward Thomas J. High School. My jaw dropped. Woah. This is really exciting! Now more daydreaming! As we all got in a straight line I began. Except this was the strongest and most clarifying one I’ve ever had. The most vivid pictures popped through my mind in the most complex way. “Kayla…” One of them said. “KAYLA!!!” I opened my eyes quickly. “You know, you should really pay attention during a fire alarm. Now, what’s you mother’s phone number?” Mrs. Mary, the principal asked. “Well I have a cellular phone Mrs. Mary. And you may use it.” I said in a quite frightening tone that she backed up a few inches and grabbed the Rant from my hands. She went to contacts and put it against her right ear. “Mrs. Meyers, yes this is the principal. There is a fire at the school and we would like you to pick your daughter up.” Mrs. Mary explained everything, then handed me back the phone. I lowered it into my pocket. The new girl, Jaime, patted my shoulder. I spun in response. “Yes?” I said gradually wondering why she was talking to me. “Umm well I was wondering, if you wanted to be my friend. I noticed you well, daydream quite a lot” I blushed “and well, I do to.” At first I didn’t believe it. Her grades were the best in the class. I gaped and she chuckled. We were the only ones in the courtyard. My mom’s minivan pulled in the very small parking area. “Hey, Kayla, can I come over to your house? I texted my mom and she said I can spend the night with someone.” Jaime said walking toward the minivan. “Sure! Let me go ask my mom. You wait here.” I rushed toward the car. “Hey mom, my new friend Jaime wants to come over. Is that alright with you?” I grinned and my mom was surprised. I hadn’t had a friend since Tennessee, my old state. “Of course! Well, go get her and we will go get Taco Bell. I’m starved.” My mother said in the most appealing voice she’s ever had. “WAIT! MRS. MURKENS!!” Mrs. Mary said, racing with a clipboard and pen. “Will you please sign here saying your taking your daughter home?” My mom glared at the school. “Yes, and I’m also taking Jaime Dark. She’s spending the night.” Jaime slowly glided her way toward the beat-up old minivan. “Yes. My mother said it would be alright.” Mrs. Mary asked my mom to sign for both me and Jaime. She nodded and grabbed the pen and paper. Me and Jaime quickly climbed in the back of the car. As soon as Mrs. Mary was out of sight, my mom drove off. “Alright! Let’s get our Taco Bell on!” My mom said. I giggled lamely. “Mom, no offense but that was seriously lame.” Jaime and I both burst in to laughter. As soon as we got home me and Jaime went up to my room to eat our 10 pack of Soft Tacos and Cinnamon Twists. Jaime and I both got Sprite. Later on that night me and Jaime played truth or dare. “Kay, Truth or Dare?” Jaime asked still laughing from the last one that we did. “Dare!” I said and laughed in her face. “LOL! Well I dare you to call Dylan and ask him on a date in a guy voice!” She said almost spitting as she laughed as LOL. I snatched at her phone, (cause Dylan would think it’s her) and dialed. Well, I didn’t need to cause he was on speed dial. “Hello?” The other side of the phone said. I used my best guy voice. “Yea, hey Dylan? Want to go out Saturday?” I turned my head to laugh. “Umm who the heck is this?” I hung up after that. I turned bright red and went to the bathroom. Jaime walked toward the door.
