• A shrill, echoing laugh, like that of a madman’s coming from behind her.
Alexis turned her head hesitantly to see what had made the sound. What she saw, she first thought was the silhouette of a fox against the light from one of the light posts. Until it stood up on two legs. From this distance, she was unable to tell much about how it looked, other than at the top of its head were two ears shaped like a fox’s and it had a human’s structure.
Before she could finish taking in a breath, whatever it was charging toward her with blinding speed. She leapt out of the way but it still caught her right heel with the claws at the end of its fingers. She cried out in pain as she fell to the ground with a thud.
This close, she could now see that it was hunched over with a long writhing tail that seemed to have a sharp end. It spun toward her and she noticed it was grinning, seemingly showing off the rows of razor sharp teeth. Its features were grotesquely inhuman and, she only realized then, that it didn’t have any eyes. Where the eyes would go on a human face, there was none on this creature. On this demon.
She tried to get up but the demon grabbed her and spun her around. As if it might help, she threw a left hook at it, but it only moved its head out of the way, bit into her arm and tore off a chunk of flesh. She screamed.
She realized then, looking at the massive amounts of blood spewing from her arm, that she felt so weak. If this demon didn't kill her then hunger or anemia would. She began slipping in and out of consciousness. How much time passed between the two was beyond her. First the demon was holding her. Then, a blinding light. A loud bang. Something lifting her up. And then, nothing.
