• Vampire Life

I shivered as I gazed up at the moon. It was full, bright; perfect. It made me feel free.
I looked down and surveyed the tall, short, glowing city, the people aimlessly walking the streets, not knowing of the danger. As I said. Perfect.
Many of them were drunk, their blood filled with unappetizing liquor, but some were clean. I could hear their hearting beating in their chests; could see their veins pulsing under the thing layer of skin. My mouth watered. I couldn’t wait any longer.
The man in the alley, apparently taking a shortcut, wasn’t aware of my presence. Yet. I silently dropped to the ground. My body arched smoothly as I flipped through the air, landing with an inaudible thump.
I stared at his back, just listening to his breathing. Slowly, steadily, softly, in and out. Prowling towards him, I longed for it, torturing myself. But it was not yet time. No, not yet. Wait….Wait….Now!
I pounced, yanking him toward me, pulling his head up exposing his neck. Swiftly, I brought my mouth to his neck, fangs sliding soundlessly out. I licked once, for effect, and then sunk my teeth in. All this in a few seconds; the man only had time to squeak before I was on him.
The blood filled my mouth, sliding deliciously down my throat. This desire I was waiting so long for was being satisfied, but too quickly it seemed. It was unbearably hard, but I stopped, retracting my fangs, regretfully. But I made a vow to never kill my victims, and they didn’t turn into vampires, so I didn’t have to worry about that.
Touching him lightly on the forehead, I easily erased his memory, since he had passed out. Life was so simple sometimes, even if you had already lived for three centuries, with more to come.

As I wandered aimlessly, yet in a certain direction, along the rooftops, I thought about Yumi.
Maybe I should go and visit her, since I’m in the area. She should be waking up soon…
Looking towards the horizon, I estimated that it should be about 5:00AM, so that meant that the sun would be rising in about an hour or so.
Well, I don’t really want to be out when the sun comes up, it gives me such a dreadful headache, but if I must I will.
I decided to stay on the rooftops; they were faster and easier to get around on, but all the jumping is so bothersome.
    Oh well.
I found the direction of her apartment, and started running.
Coming to the edge of the first building at full speed, and not slowing down any, I jumped, exerting just enough force to propel my body across, but not far enough as to land and have to jump again right away.
I had to admit it, even though jumping was a bother, I loved the feeling of flying through the air. The force of my jump pushing me through the empty space; nothing under my feet; nothing to stop my fall but the ground ten stories below me. I loved the feeling of weightlessness.
My shoulder length, straight black hair streaming out behind me, I landed running on the other building, streaked across, and then jumped again.
As I ran and jumped, my thoughts, again, turned to my best friend, but this time, I was remembering how we first met….

“Ugh! I’m so bored! And I hate snow!!”
I stood on the sidewalk outside a building, with a park across the street, in my boots and parka, a foot of snow; fuming.
I was ten, but more mature than a ‘normal human ten year old’. So here I was, a mature ten year old, and I was sent to the park to play, while the annoying elders, I had to give them credit though, they did take care of me, were in a meeting. A meeting that I was certainly mature enough to attend…..hey, who’s that?
I was facing the park, so I could see that there was a little girl, around ten or eleven years old, running around in circles, and laughing her head off.
I, personally, could not see what was so funny, so I decided that I would go and ask the strange girl what, exactly, she was laughing about.
I started to trudge my way through the snow toward her, looked down, and grimaced. “Great, the snow is even deeper over here.”
I continued on, trying to ignore the infuriating snow, and finally stopped about a meter away from the intriguing girl. She had stopped her spinning, and was watching me, as I was watching her.
“Hi!” she said, her eyes seemed to sparkle with curiosity.
    “Hi…”
    “What’s your name?”
I hesitated, still not sure what to make of the strange girl.
    “Yuki”
“Oooh! It almost sounds like mine! I’m Yumi!”
Her eyes had lit up even more, if that was possible, and she stuck out her hand, seeming to want a handshake. I don’t quite understand why she didn’t shake my hand earlier, when she had first said hello, but okay. I gripped her hand in a firm handshake, trying to show her that my maturity level was much higher than hers. She noticed how I had squeezed her hand slightly, in a firm manner, and seemed to try that herself, though she didn’t really succeed. Ha! I was a natural.
    “So…” I started, “what’s so funny?”
She acquired a puzzled expression, probably wondering what I was asking her.
“I saw you earlier, and you were spinning in circles, laughing, so I wanted to know what, exactly, is so funny.”
She frowned for a second, seeming to concentrate, then her face lit up again.
“Oh yeah! I was just happy about the snow. You see I don’t like the cold, but I like the snow, that’s why I dressed up all warm and cozy, so I could come play. How old are you?”
I hesitated, again, for a second, startled a little by the sudden jump in the conversation.
    “Um…ten.”
I hadn’t reached the age where I would stop growing so fast; that would be in about eight or nine more years.
“Wow!” she glowed happily, “I’m ten too! Can we be friends?”
I was starting to like her, and she wasn’t all that bad.
    “Sure”
Even though I barely knew her, I had a sense that I could trust her. Plus I was in need of someone to talk to while I waited.

Coming back to the present, I realized that I was near her house now, and the suns rays were just starting to become visible over the horizon. I leaped across two more buildings, and then stopped on the building across from her apartment. Yumi’s rented apartment room was on the top floor, with a window view to the sky so the light could be let in. I could see that her light was on, so I jumped across to her apartment and looked in through the window.
In the small view I had through the window, I could see her pacing back and forth, in and out of my view.
Making up a story again, no doubt.
I tapped on the window once she was in my sight again, and startled out of her daydreaming, she looked up and smiled brightly.
Practically skipping, she moved to and climbed up the ladder that was resting underneath the window, unlocked and pushed it open. I jumped in, landing quietly and gracefully on my feet, before turning around and assessing my best friend as she climbed back down the ladder.
She was still in her PJ’s, and had tucked her dirty blonde, chin length hair behind her ears, a habit she had picked up after cutting of her previously waist length hair last year. Her eyes were a light blue, with just a hint of green, and framed with long lashes. Her skin was pale; the opposite of mine, which is a darker brown, but not dark like the people from Africa. Her lips were sort of a rosy pink, and she was tall and skinny.
She reached the bottom of the ladder, and jumped forwards, grabbing my hands in her slender fingered ones.
“Yuki! I made another story that you have to hear! Sit down sit down,” she waved in the direction of her bed.
I laughed at her excitement, “hold up there a bit, shouldn’t you be getting ready for school right away? Which you are still attending right?”
Yumi attended a writing school to become an author. Even with my help, she barely got accepted.
“Of course! I wouldn’t miss a day,” her face suddenly turned down in a pout, “but I don’t get to talk to you as often anymore.”
I laughed again, this time at her honesty.
“I wish I could talk to you as often as before too, but I refuse to get in the way of your journey to do what you love doing. And I really do want to hear this new story, but I can wait, so you can too. You can tell me after you’re school done for the day. Okay?”
I gave her and encouraging smile, which she returned at full power despite her feeling glum just a few seconds ago.
She sure can seem like a little sister to me sometimes…..
“Now go and get ready for school okay?” I stood up, taking her with me, and gave her a little push towards her closet.
“Okay……” her shoulders slumped, and she let out an exaggerated sigh.
I snorted and then gave her a hug, which she returned with delight.
“I’ll see you after school then. Maybe I’ll even pick you up in my new car…..”
    This time she laughed.
“Maybe, but it’ll only be because you want to drive it. Geez….you and your cars…”
It was my turn to pout.
“No…….well maybe, but I do want to pick you up.”
I gave her one last hug and then went to stand below the window.
    “Yuki!”
    I turned around, “yes?”
“Say hello to Hiroshi for me will you?” she almost had a grin on her face.
    I blushed and looked down.
    Hiroshi…….
I mumbled a quick ‘sure’ and then jumped. I could hear her laughing.
