what if's in his current life - what will happen when he earns enough in savings to warrant a place of his own, what would happen if he suddenly came into a lot of money, what it would be like if he knew a life easier and better than his own. What if he got a promotion, what if he was spotted by a higher up and recognized for his triumph over his struggles - the list goes on and he could literally spend hours imagining himself in these scenarios.
Budgeting - Born into a world of very few possessions, he was quick to learn the art of budgeting and saving. Helping his mother out with grocery shopping became a weekly task and Reid developed skills early on when it came to math and balance - when your grocery list depended on how much money you could make the most of, you learned fairly fast how to pinch pennies and find the best deals. As an adult, he's grown in his skills as he's been forced to balance paying rent and various bills on top of necessary expenses like for clothing and food. He takes personal delight in being able to save money and prides himself on his intricate attention to detail with his array of written out budgeting plans.
Music - One of his favorite methods of "escape" is listening to music. As a teenager, he was given the opportunity to play the clarinet as part of the outreach music program at his public junior high school but after his step-father successfully broke the instrument during one of his drunken episodes, Reid has since retired the dream of playing music and has instead turned to simply enjoying it by listening as opposed to participating. He favors more classical and jazz pieces than he does current artists but it's not hard for him to find himself lost in melodies and lyrics, regardless of the era of the piece in question.
Virtues: Protective - If you've made it past his gruff exterior and wormed your way into his good favor, consider yourself forever protected by the grumpy boy. Reid is very protective of those he cares about and will do whatever it takes to ensure no harm or insult comes their way. Quick to jump to their defense, he'll risk his own well being or reputation if it means keeping a close companion or loved one's intact. He might not have been able to protect his mother or himself as a child from their abusive family member, so he goes out of his way to be extra defensive as an adult to make up for his inadequacy as a child.
Determined - It's hard for him to give up on a challenge once he accepts it. Ever since he was old enough to hold a job, he's had a determination to make life better for himself and his mother, regardless of what it would take to get to that point. Very few things will deter him from his goals, so Reid is able to stay focused and resolute until he sees the task through to the end.
Imaginative - Growing up in a poor family, he was forced to come up with his own methods of playtime, most of which involved using his imagination and creating scenes around him or everyday objects into magical replacements. As an adult, he harnesses this ability in his everyday life, working to figure out ways to make chores and tasks even easier (or in some cases, more fun and tolerable). There's more than one way to skin the figurative cat and he enjoys finding out just how many ways he can manage it.
Flaws: Insecure - Thanks to being raised in part by a hateful step-parent, Reid suffers from an inherent belief that he's not good enough. While it helps him strive to challenge himself in his adult life, it also hinders him when that little voice in the back of his head reminds him that if he wasn't good enough as a child, he's probably not good enough as an adult either. Seeking validation, he's apt to annoying superiors and friends by repeating questions and making multiple requests for approval or verification when completing tasks.
Defensive - He's overly defensive when it comes to being critiqued or questioned. Interfering with his need for validation, if someone were to find something wrong with his methods or results, he's quick to respond in a gruff or aggressive manner because the idea of not being good enough stings and immediately draws his guard up. If he's failed or done something wrong, he's quick to come up with excuses to blame, deflecting the failure from being his direct responsibility. This can prove to make him difficult to work with in either his job or his social life (or what he
has of one).
Anti-Social - It's hard for him to make friends due to his anti-social nature. His go-to attitude is gruff and abrasive, repelling potential friends from sticking around. Used to being alone, it's a state he's come accustomed to so when dealing with others Reid finds it hard to adapt and cope, resulting in him either going quiet or even snapping at particularly outgoing individuals who might push one too many of his buttons.
