first apology
Ellis had been subconsciously avoiding his issues with Ayuu and Bo for weeks now, but the imp was growing into the sort who met challenges head on, and this was one with personal stakes. As soon as he consciously realized he had behaved in a rude and hurtful way, he knew he had to confront the problem and apologize, and since he had no idea what he might say to the geist, he started with the grimm.
He found Ayuu reading on the lawn outside zer dorm, some tome or another on musical theory, and ze was so engrossed in the subject matter that ze didn't lose focus, not even when Ellis's bulky form blocked zer light.
"Ayuu?"
Ze looked up, a touch of sadness in zer eyes when ze saw who it was.
"I want to apologize."
The sadness shifted to fondness instead, the grimm's emotions plain and unguarded. "I'm not angry. There's no reason to be sorry."
"I shouldn't have hugged you though. Not while Bo was there. Not without... checking." He still couldn't pinpoint why doing so had been such a poor decision, only that the result had made him miserable when he should have been happy. The answer was right there, so close he might reach out and claw it. Ellis just wanted the feeling to stop. He wanted everything to be the way it had been.
Ayuu smiled then, a small, teasing thing.
"I told you, there's no reason to be sorry. I thought your hug was very sweet and... yes, maybe hugging me in front of Bo complicated things, but I have to believe he'll come around. Maybe not to the idea of all of us, but..." Ayuu looked at him, took in his confusion. Ze gestured to the grass at zer side. "Ellis, please sit."
He did as ze asked, curling his tail around his sneaker-clad feet. From here he could see the brush of zer lashes against zer cheeks and the twin dents zer canines left in zer lower lip. Ellis was blinking stupidly at them when ze addressed him.
"Do you like me?"
He sat up, sudden and straight, as if someone had dropped an ice cube down the back of his shirt and stepped on his tail at the same time. Color rose in Ellis's cheeks, staining them a deeper blue. "Of course! I... you're my closest friend."
"But do you like me more than that?"
He swallowed, ears drooping in his discomfort. "Ayuu..."
"Because Bo does, and judging by the look you're giving me now, you have something to say about that at the very least."
Ellis opened his mouth, shut it, sighed through his nose, ran his claws through the length of his hair, then began to speak, a rambling torrent of words that he couldn't stop until it had gone dry.
"I don't know! I... guess I knew that I was doing something I shouldn't when I hugged you. Or right after, maybe. It felt like I was taking something that wasn't mine, and it was terrible and nice at the same time, like I had won but only 'cause I had cheated." He looked down at his hands. "I used to think about you all the time, about how much fun we would have the next time I saw you, but now it's all messed up. Now when I think of you, I think of Bo too and how you knew each other first and how you might rather be spending time with him than with me."
He was still looking at his hands when zers slid over them, comforting and steady.
"I think about you all the time too. Because I love you, Ellis. I love Bo too, and I don't prefer either one of you over the other. But the two of you don't seem to like each other very much, and I don't know what that means for us in the end. It's unfair and selfish, but I don't want to give either of you up."
If Ellis had thought he'd been confused when he had first sought Ayuu out, it was nothing compared to how he felt now. Ze loved him. It was difficult to keep his reaction to that news from overwhelming him, and his reply was predictably choppy and rambling.
"Well... um... I definitely don't want to be given up because I... because I... I think I do too. Love you." It was a strange sensation, realizing that that was the easiest of the things he had to say. Ayuu smiled softly in response, and though Ellis was fairly certain he was beaming like an idiot, he didn't care. He was tingly and light. Invincible. Warm. Happy. "It would be easier for you if Bo and I were friends, I think." His brain was working far too hard to understand and only getting halfway there with the effort. "So, I'll try to be his friend." It would be simple enough. He didn't hate the geist, not really, he just got a little grumpy whenever he thought of him and Ayuu having fun without him. Ellis loosened his grip where it had tightened around the grimm's hands. Simple. "Is that okay?"
The faintest look of concern, similar to the one ze'd worn when he had arrived, returned to zer face as ze nodded, but it turned to wary happiness soon enough. "I'd be honored if you'd try."
