Name: Jadamirei
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual.
Craft: Harper
Rank: 4th term Apprentice/Candidate
Songs that Inspire: You are loved (Dont give up); One Fine Day; Must be dreaming; Rabbit Heart

History:

Journeyman Harper Mikel (Mee-kell) fell in love with a Healer, Szelem (ZELL-EM). Their relationship was nothing serious, both having duties, but each sought physical companionship and all was well for a time. Almost two turns into their very open relationship, Szelem found she was with child. Together the parents decided to keep the child. They chose to not espouse, due to their conflicting duties, but Mikel swore the child would be acknowledged. The birth was hard, but Szelem survived the early birth of the tiny child. The cost of this baby's life was Szelem's chance to have more children- the healers could have saved either her womb or the child, and there was no question to the Healer. One child was enough for her, and there was nothing to say she would get pregnant again if she let this small life slip away without a fight. As for Mikel, he joined his love in time for the birth of what would be their only child. He rejoiced in the birth of his daughter, choosing to name her Jadamirei. To both Szelem and Migel, looking down at their newborn, she was a miracle.

Unfortunately, Jada was an unpleasant child, whose lungs started growing stronger the night she was born. Scream, scream, scream she did; Her mother was the only one able to stand her, drawn by instinct bred in all parents to care for the sweet milky scent of her young. To everyone else, Jada was a wrinkled thing with bright red blotchy near-translucent skin, bald head and eyes that gave her father the shivers when she looked at him and gave him that guileless unusually toothy smile. She was a greedy thing, and her mother could hardly provide enough milk for her. The healers were at least relieved to see her eating, as she had been born desperately undersized. But as she grew older, she changed. Her hair grew in thick and wavy, her eyes darkened to a deep blue, and her voice lost the shrill gravel to something harmonic. Under the watchful eye of the Healer Hall she grew. She learned her numbers and letters, she learned to identify plants. She was still a very hungry child, and grew "pleasantly plump."

She was horribly afraid of insects, and whenever one was sighted would run shrieking until she found one of the Healers firelizards, near which she would huddle until she was sure that the insect-creature wasn't going to chase and devour her.

By the time she was seven turns, she was assisting the healers by grabbing bandages for them or reminding them where they left their papers, but she had little stomach for blood- becoming violently ill at the more serious wounds that came to them. Clearly, she would have little chance at being an efficient Healer when she was older. It was also at seven turns that she first met her grandfather. Her grandmother, she was told, was dying and wanted to see her husband and daughter make up- there had, apparently, been quite an argument when Szelem had told her father she was going to be a Healer and "You can't stop me!"

Her grandfather took one look at Jadamirei and decreed she was going to be spending more time outside. The child protested, and wound up outside anyways. She was terrified of almost anything bigger than she was and eventually allowed back inside when it was realized she was spending more time crying than playing. When Szelem returned to Healer Hall, Jadamirei went with her.

When she was eleven, her father realized she had a good, clear soprano voice and an ear for music. She was clumsy on the playing of instruments, but that was what training was for. She was never going to be a healer, that was obvious, so Mikel convinced Szelem to allow Jada to apprentice to Harper Hall, promising to keep as much an eye on her as he could. Jadamirei was delighted to go. Her father escorted her to the hall, presented her with a pleased smile and wished her the best of luck. She needed it. Harper Hall was hard. Even though she came early, there were stipulations to being an Apprentice, and her tutelage would not formally start until she was twelve turns. So it was chores, and more chores, and playing with the children there. That was when she met Tethis and Folen.

When her classes started it wasn't much better for her- she'd come here to sing? Too bad she hadn't let her father warn her about all the hard work that went into turning a shiny piece of rock into a polished gem. Still, she'd chosen this path and it was the path she had determined to stand. She worked hard at her studies, her resentment fading as she realized how important it was to be able to "stand before one could walk." The turns passed quicker and quicker, becoming a much-loved routine. She worked hard, and dreamed of the day she'd walk the tables. "Jadamirei, Jadamirei!" they'd chant for her, and her parents would be so proud!

The day the Weyr came searching, and she was Searched, was a day of mixed emotion. She was breathless with the hope of Impressing; Angry that they had come for her so close to her goal. She could think now of the way that the blue dragon settled to the ground, the tall rider leaping off her dragon, hair shining in the noonday sun. She looked weary, frustrated. Nothing like Jadamirei had imagined as a child. Instead, she was bundled up with the other child that had passed this dragon and rider's odd test, secured in a warm cloak and shuffled away in a manner that was brisk and no-nonsense, dropped (figuratively) in the hands of a strange woman she'd never met, and thrown into a place even more confusing than she'd imagined.

Appearance:

Jada is a beautiful young woman. Black hair falls in ringlets to her waist, pale skin, bright eyes in a deep blue. Those eyes are expressive, guileless, and her face reveals almost everything she is thinking as an open book- something she has worked hard to hide as one of her "Harper duties." Her limbs are slender, but she considers herself to be plump because of her body shape. Her eyes are a bit large for her slim face. Since coming to the Weyr she often keeps her long hair tied back in a braid or a tail to keep it out of the way while she does her chores and lessons. She is fond of wearing breeches when possible, though it isn't "feminine" they are more comfortable and less likely to hamper her movements if she needs to move quickly. She has a small scar on the left pinky finger from where a harp string snapped and cut her, and a light scar down the palm of her left hand from where she cut herself cooking.

Personality:

Jada is essentially a soft-hearted, slightly naive idealist with a passion for people and music.

She is tries hard to see the best in everyone. This can translate to almost willful ignorance until she is done harm, even developing into outright belligerence if someone tries to accuse someone of wrongdoing without proof. She needs to wrap her mind around the concept that not everyone is as nice as she is. When faced with a tough decision, she tends to think of solutions that will be the best for everyone involved; Harper training and the way she was raised imposed an impartiality that some might not expect from her.

She's always willing to make a new friend. Don't be afraid to come to her with your problems. Her advice may be useless or not what you want to hear, but she'll listen with a smile and hold you when you need to cry. If you're sick, tell her- she'll work overtime in the kitchens in exchange for klah or a bubbly pie to cheer you up, or take over a few of your chores if you ever need to do something. However, if you have done her wrong, sucks to be you. She's not completely selfless though- she may call in that favor on a nice day when she wants to go catch up with her music, or when she's feeling ill herself.

Jada has a weakness for treats, to the point of being downright selfish about them if she's having an off-day- which are more frequent than she'd care to admit. Even though she is "grown", she still likes to eat. Almost half of her 'free' time is spent exercising to try and keep her figure, though she despairs of ever dropping weight. She keeps up her Harper training through assisting the weyrharper when she can; she sings during most of her chores, practicing scales and reciting her lessons, and at night before bed she spends half a candlemark practicing the harp.

Her parents gave her good genes, and she's loath to see them go to waste! She recognizes that she is attractive, even if she's not quite sure what to do with it. She doesn't decorate herself, or wear many bright colors, but she does take good care of her hair, liking to wear it down when she can because it makes her feel pretty. When she is working it is up in a knot or a braid, to stay out of her way and not be a distraction.

Her primary fears are silly to some, since they may not likely to be found in the Weyr. Jada still gets sick at the sight of human blood, to the point of passing out at birthings, and getting sick occasionally when a cook cuts herself. Se is working hard to fix this, knowing that when thread comes there may be more horrifying injuries than anything she's seen before. Therefore she helps out the injured as much as she can, bandaging small wounds. She has a phobia of some insects, to the point that her skin will crawl. Not a debilitating fear, but she'll get someone else to remove the offender from her presence when she can. Tunnel snakes are not a part of her Jada-approved regime, and she highly encourages those who are willing to rid the Weyr of the disgusting, disgusting things! That fear is debilitating- if she sees one she'll be helpless- if she's lucky, she may even be able to think clearly enough to cry out. She has a fear of running across a wild feline, though she knows it isn't inclined to happen- she's heard tales of some of them being able to harm even dragons! Naturally, she's a bit worried that she'll be on the Sands and move too slow, concluding in a mauling by a young dragonet. And the worst of her fears (after tuunnelsnakes) is falling. She won't walk alone to peek over a weyr ledge, but she'd gladly go a-dragonback with straps to hold her and wings to keep her up. It is something else she wants to work to overcome, but at this point...

Chores? Well... she can wash dishes, and stir pots. Don't let her season the cooking- you might wind up with a stomachache, or a plague of the bowels. Her thumb isn't quite green, but at least it isn't black, not that there are many plants to grow. She can play the harp passably, but her gitar and fluting need a bit of work. She'd never be a master composer, though she can read well enough and can tell you where something "feels" wrong in the music. She can't sew for anything- leave it at she's sewn clothing together, pant legs sewn shut, and bled all over the white mending. In fact, she's been banned from sewing rooms! And frankly, she hates mending. Let her deal with the little ones instead. Speaking of little ones- she loves them. She always wanted to be a mother. If she Impresses, she knows it won't likely happen- she'll have other duties, to her Weyr. Still, she holds a hope in her mind for genuine love and family.

In the end:

Places can be rebuilt; people make the place. It isn't the land that matters, it is the people in that land. Odd, perhaps, for a Harper to so clearly ignore the history of places; it is people who make that history and it is people who will be protected by Jada and whatever dragon chooses her.

Other:

=D I know it is a lot of history, but it explains a little more about where some of her values would have come from. Healer-raised, Harper-trained.... it is all in the people. Places can be rebuilt, but people are priceless.

The weyr

Right now Jada and her flits live together in the barracks. She has little to her name except her instruments and her clothing- she is only a heavy traveler due to the sheer mass of stuff she has had sent from two doting parents. So what if she has two of almost everything because they don't coordinate? More pants for her and less the often she must do her laundry.

THE TOUCHING

Jadamirei skittered onto the sands, middle of the pack, looking around nervously. Nine eggs, one of which may contain a dragon for her. She gave a nervous bow to the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader as she passed them for the eggs. She was smiling like a loon, her round face pink with excitement and hope.

What was the protocol for this? If she wanted to approach one of the eggs? She bit her lip, glancing around at the other Candidates. Who would approach first? And in terms of approaching, which egg should she try and touch first? Telgar seemed to expect female Candidates to be standing for the Gold alone...

Blue eyes looked around for someone she knew. And then she decided to gird her loins. She stepped forward, giving a polite bow to the Queen dragon. "By your leave, Gold Kaveth, I would approach your clutch." Too much? Too courteous? Was she overeager? Well by the Egg, approaching the Clutch was what they were here for! But she wasn't about to risk upsetting the Queen dragon by running up to them like a wherryhead.

Was she doing this right?

She hadn't been eaten or assaulted, which was a good thing, so Jadamirei moved forward. She would start at the Streaked Sky Egg. She politely waited until the Candidate in front of her had removed his hands before reaching out to gently stroke the blue shell. And recoiled, alarmed by the wave of hostility. Apparently this one didn't like people much. Or contact, one of the two. She reached out, patted it one more time just to be sure, sheaking her head at the distaste dripping from the shell.

So instead Jada moved to the Pink Charcoal Egg, reaching out and laying a firmer hand on it. Pleasant enough. A tinge of... longing? Perhaps, but who was she to think she could understand the emotions of a baby dragon. They were said to be almost as intelligent from Hatching as a human child. But it wasn't until after Impression that they were safe. Still, she kept her hands on the pink egg and tried to send the baby within gentle encouragement.

Finally she lifted her hands back up and glanced over the sands. Candidates were everywhere, and Jadamirei planned to save the gold egg for the last. So where should she go? There was one egg left off by itself... she should go there first. So the Grey Speckled Egg it would be! Moving over to the small egg, she slowly reached her hands out. Nothing. Cold Apathy. Nothing hostile about it, just a level of indifference that was imposing. Pulling herself up, she moved towards the main clutch.

On to the Orange Stripe Egg for Jadamirei. She moved around another Candidate to carefully run her hands over the egg. She frowned quickly at the sheer displeasure she felt from it. It gave her mild creepy-crawlies up her spine, so she quickly stepped away, wiping her sweaty palms on the white skirt she wore.

She took a step over, placing her hands gingerly on the New Grass Egg. This one made her smile. What secrets did the small egg hold, leaving up against its Queen like that? Like the pink charcoal egg, it gave her a pleasant feeling. It was reluctantly that she pulled her palms away from the egg.

Next, she stepped carefully around the gold egg to stroke the Blue Earth Egg. As she touched it, it seemed to leap, making her start in surprise. Luckily, she didn't make any other noise, but her blue eyes warmed slightly and she pressed her cheek slightly against the active shell. She would most definitely have to find the weyrsinger after the Hatching, they still hadn't had the meeting of the Harper Apprentices to write the piece devoted to Kaveth, Malkai and now to this beautiful clutch.

Stepping back, she started over towards the next egg, again careful to bypass the Queen egg. It did, however, get an admiring look as she stepped around it yet again. Soon. Soon.

Jadamirei moved forward yet again, brushing a lock of her dark hair from her face. Delicate hands reached out to stroke across the Three Spots Egg hesitantly, trying not to smile at the tilted egg. Ah, there it was. The rich sensation of amusement, some solitary pleasure. What was the joke? And who would be the first to know the punch line this small dragonet was bursting to say? Well, Theirs, obviously. Reluctantly, after several moments, she pulled her hands off of the dark purple shell and took another step closer to the gold egg. Only one between her and the crowning of this Touching.

The Spicy Red Egg; when she touched it she felt an almost alien sensation that struck a chord. She didn't necessarily like it; the creature inside was impatient with the world, like a caged... thing. Interesting. The thought of being trapped inside a shell herself made her temperature rise. She couldn't- didn't want to- imagine what it would be like trapped inside of an egg. She stepped back, and paused, regrouping her thoughts. It was time.

This was the end of them. This was the reason she had been Searched in the first place, and the object of a dream she'd coveted as a little girl, until she grew up. When people got a little older, dreams changed.

Her mother had told her that as a very little girl she had wanted to be a Hearer. Jadamirei couldn't remember those days, but the thought of it made her laugh. She didn't have the stomach for such things as her mother dealt with; growing up in Healer Hall she'd been good for nothing but delivering bandages and messages, tottering around aimlessly. having her father discover her musical potential had been a fabulous stroke of luck. It was at Harper Hall that she'd thought to have found the place she belonged.

It was at Harper Hall that she thought she had found a dream. It was a simple dream, really. Or so she'd thought. Oh, it was a dream that would take decades to achieve, but over the four and a half turns she'd been at the Hall, she'd found a niche for herself. She'd planned to rise through the ranks, becoming a journeyman, a senior journeyman, and someday a Master Singer. She'd thought her goal firm. Thought herself on the path her life would take.

The day the Weyr had come Searching had proved otherwise, and here she was, at the standing in front of the egg that was the entire reason the Weyr had bothered looking outside. It was more than mildly intimidating. During her time here, she had come to the conclusion that she would be just as happy with a green as a gold dragon; she still couldn't hold back the tight feeling in her chest that said, 'what if?'

Reaching out, her palms came to rest on the Golden Stag Egg. It felt so secure. Comfortable. It knew what it was, what it was going to be. So unlike a person; there were not so many different options for a dragon. As a Queen egg, the dragonet within had a place in life that was predetermined by nature itself. Jada smiled, the twist of her lips something wry. Lucky little creature. She remained there for a few moments, basking in the feeling of calm that almost oozed from the egg before stepping away.

One last bow to Gold Kaveth, a polite one to Weyrwoman Malkai and Weyrleader I'dan, and she moved off of the sands.

RETURN OF THE PLAGUE

Weyrwoman Luci of High Reaches had invited Weyrwoman Malkai and Junior Goldrider Iva to come for a feast in their honor. Some way to promote the relationship between the two Weyrs, perhaps? A formal introduction of the two Weyrwomen and the two Junior goldriders, beyond the summit that had occurred before Kaveth had risen and laid her clutch. The Touching had been three days previous, so the Weyrwoman had gone. The news had come as a shock, sending most of Telgar into an outraged panic. Plague at High Reaches?! Their Goldriders were being quarantined, along with their escorts? She could hear Riders arguing in the halls, staff whispering about it in darkened corners.

For a little over 24 hours, the Weyr was in an uproar. Malkai and Iva finally returned, a little over 24 hours they had left. If there was plague, how would Telgar protect their shattered Weyr? Dragonriders and Candidates alike were waiting with bated breath to know what was going to be done about the situation.

The Hatching would happen any day. Surely they would do nothing until the dragonets were safetly Hatched and paired with Theirs. But what could they do? Where could they go? Seated outside, in the sunlight, she penned a careful letter to her mother. The Healer would surely be able to advise her of what to do?

Dear Mother,
XI write to you with news that is most dire, and yet I fear no surprise to you by now. The Weyrwoman of High Reaches is said to have sent for a healer, the son of Yalin. Rumors abound of the return of the Plague. Please, could you send back with Allegretto some information in regards to symptoms, and how the sick can be eased? You know I am no healer, so please use small words!
X Are there ways to prevent the illness from spreading? Particular protocols that should be followed? Obviously be careful of the food and drink, be wary of anyone you are going to be intimate with (not that you have to worry just yet, mother) And wear a mouth covering around those who may be infected. Do you have any other advice?
X I know that the Weyr has its own healer, but I write to you in part from realization that I have neglected my duties to you as daughter, not just from worry for my own health and the health of those around me. I love you, and I love my father. Please, the both of you must stay well.
X The Hatching will be soon. There is a fine, large gold egg in the clutch. Hopefully there are several green dragons among them. Wish me luck in Impressing.
X Your obedient, loving daughter
XX Jadamirei

And with bated breath, there was little else to do but wait.
