[Note: This RP is a Semi-Open RP and takes place prior to the Touching. What this means is that there is a cut off for the number of people who can be here at once. I'm allowing four more people plus M'dor. Two of these spots are going to Jadamirei and Folen; however the other two are on a first come first serve basis. Once two other people have posted, I'll change the title to PRP and it'll be closed to any new comers. ]

Looks like we finally have a new Weyrwoman, M'dor mused to his green from his customary seat in the dining hall. News had travelled quickly through the Weyr, declaring Malkai as Telgar's newest Weyrwoman, and I'dan as the new Weyrleader. D'rak had been shipped out of the Weyrleader's rooms almost fast enough to be considered rude, but the old man didn't seem too bothered by the prospects. The only thing he'd miss was the wine, but then again he could get that from the kitchen girls on his own (what with his natural charm). The thought made him snort, the corners of his lips quirking upwards as he strummed a few chords on his gitar.

Natural charm indeed.

I am very glad we do. I was very worried about them. Ichoth was sunning herself on their weyr ledge, but that didn't stop her from communicating with her rider.

They wouldn't have Rose together. Besides, now we can be rid of jealous queens and drunk bronzeriders. Rumour has it they're shipping Shaith off if Kaveth lays a golden egg.

The green projected what could only be described as a waggling finger. You should not spread such rumours, Mine. We are not meant to be sharing information like that. Clearly Ichoth was not as pleased about the removal of gold Shaith as M'dor was.

The Weyrsinger chuckled aloud at his dragon's disapproval, smiling to himself as he continued to play. With the Flight now come and passed, no doubt Jadamirei would seek him out again to fulfill his promise. A song for the newest Weyrwoman in Telgar since the dreaded Aesri.

It was certainly worth celebrating.

Kaveth had risen! So about a day after the flight, Jadamirei was hurrying through the halls, dodging drudges on her way to the dining hall. She had been almost everywhere else she could think of that he might be hiding, until someone had pointed her off to the dining hall. Of course, she would neglect the obvious! She'd even dressed up for the occasion, shyly wanting to impress M'dor. She was in her favorite blue dress, her hair neatly brushed and her face still pink from the scrubbing she'd given it to get it clean. In her hands were a few pieces of scribbled-upon parchment and something to write with. Her flute was in her hair, pinning it back as was habit for her on her days off; other than that, she'd brought nothing with her.

As she approached the dining hall, she stopped to set down the paper and the writing instrument. Jada rubbed her palms on her skirt, to wipe any chalk or dust off, made sure she looked presentable, and then picked up the items again from the floor. From inside, she could hear the sound of a gitar, and the familiar sound made her smile.

That smile remained as she turned the corner, turning into the dining hall. There were a few people there, but no one in particular seemed to be with the Weyrsinger, so she made a beeline in his general direction, nodding to anyone who acknowledged her. He would surely notice her coming, with the way he was seated, but she made sure to cough lightly as she approached and set the papers down with a deliberate rustle. "Good day, Weyrsinger!"

The whole weyr was abuzz with the news of a rising and Folen couldn't help keep the spring from his step. He was realistic enough to know that having the question of who would be weyrwoman finally answered wouldn't solve all the weyr's problems and was likely even to create a few new ones.

But it was good to know there would be eggs on the sands. Perhaps the new life would bring with it better days for the weyr.

Rubbing his water wrinkled fingers against his rough shirt to dry them Folen wandered down toward the dining hall. He didn't mind laundry duty, but it would be nice to finally let his hands dry off. Perhaps aided by a nice warm cup of klah to hold.

With this fortifying image in mind he slipped into the dinning hall. His plans evaporated as soon as he saw his good friend Jada and Weyrsinger M'dor. Jada had a serious look about her. Folen smiled it looked as if she were on a mission. He couldn't help but wonder what she was up to. Curious he made his way over to the pair. "Hello Jada, Weyrsinger, how are both of you?"

Jadamirei was easy to spot - Harper blue tended to do that to a person – but that didn't make her any less welcome. The Weyrsinger felt a smile playing at the edges of his lips, but he managed to keep it small until the former Harper apprentice was well within range. There was no use denying that he didn't want to see here. He would be a fool to turn away someone who wanted to keep up their craft even in the face of Impression. But she was a nice girl, and a clever one at that, which made her company all the more enjoyable.

"And a fine day it is, Jadamirei! I hope you've been well." He stopped his gitar strumming and removed his feet from the opposite bench. "Sit down, sit down. We'll have the whole corner to ourselves. Nobody but the kitchen folk would dare interrupt composing Harpers. Word is we get all temperamental and start throwing things." M'dor gave a dramatic roll of his eyes, his grin cheeky. The message was fairly clear. Him, start those rumours? Never!

His eyes moved up to Folen when he approached, offering the other Harper apprentice a tip of his hat. "A good morning to you as well! Have you come to aid us in our top secret quest for song?"

The weyrsinger got a bright smile, the young woman leaning in to give him a quick, polite hug. "Hello Weyrsinger M'dor!" she greeted him with a cheeky smile, taking the seat he offered and setting out the things she had brought on the table between them. "I've been quite well, thank you. How about you? And Ichoth, is she well?"

Allegretto landed on the table, followed by Scherzo. Dolcissimo was sunning herself somewhere. The gold chirped at M'dor, walking across the table towards him importantly, almost preening. MusicMan should admire her. MusicMan made good sounds, and made the Girl happy. Allegretto was smart enough to know.

Jada met M'dor's own cheeky grin with a wide-eyed look and a slightly shocked laugh before Folen approached. She almost leapt from the bench, moving over to hug her friend. "Folen!" she pulled him down next to her. "M'dor," she didn't mean to skip the honorific, but she was so excited she missed it. "This is Folen, my best friend from the Hall. You remember him? He's wonderful with the flute." Unlike the two of us went unspoken.

"Your doing a good job keeping it secret as my appearance here is just a happy accident actually, but if you want my help such as it is I am glad to offer it." Folen nodded to M'dor grateful to be included in their plotting knowing he really didn't match up in ability to either M'dor or Jada.

Even so with all the work the candidates did it was nice to get the chance to make a little music once in a while. He might not be the best musician, but he missed having music play such a large part of his life none the less.

Giving Jada a grin he laughed. "I am not entirely sure that was the adjective the masters used. But I'm glad you like my playing." Folen settled down pulling his reed flute out of his belt pouch.

Little blue and bronze arrows whizzed through the air to land precariously on the young man. The blue atop his chest and bronze on his head. Folen looking startled pulled the bronze from his hair and settled it on his shoulder as the blue climbed up to the other shoulder. "So you've found out I was done with chores eh? This is Stripes," Folen smiled at his harper friends as he reached up to pet the blue. "And the bronze is Burnish."

"Good, good. We have been well. Ichoth is very pleased that we finally have a Weyrwoman, and she does not have to worry herself into a tizzy over it all. She was worried they would Rise together, see, but I knew they wouldn't. Kaveth had a good two years on Ranabeth, so it's no surprise she went up first. I can't say Iva's pleased, but let's not speak too ill of the sore loser." He winked at her.

The Weyrsinger watched as the flits gathered on the table, chuckling softly. "Hello there lovely. Quite the collection you have here, Jadamirei. Sharp may have to get off his lazy butt and come be jealous." The brown flit was, as usual, absentee, no doubt bothering some of the kitchen staff for some extra food, the wad. M'dor, however, reached over to break up some pieces of meat roll and set them on a little plate for the firelizards. Let them choose if they wanted something to eat. The gold could divvy it up.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Folen the flautist!" M'dor flashed the other apprentice a bright smile. It was nice to have a little variety here at their Harper Table (of awesome). "And you've got quite the collection of flits as well. Very nice. Now, where shall we begin…" He trailed off as he shuffled his hides around, lifting them up in an effort to find his slate. "Aha! There. Okay, so, I have already seen gold flights, however you have probably never seen a real one." Shaith's totally didn't count. "Why don't you tell me what you felt and we'll start from there?"
PostPosted: Fri Feb 19, 2010 12:06 pm

Allegretto preened at the Weyrsinger, whistling an inquiry. What was sharp? His knife? Why would a sharp be jealous? Oooh, food! The gold almost pranced across the table, taking the biggest of the pieces that M'dor had broken up and looking at Jadamirei expectantly.

Well, at least one thing had come from the lesson with Eve. Jada nodded, and the gold bit into the meatroll bit with delight, chirping appreciation to the MusicMan. Jadamirei settled on the bench again, picking up another piece and breaking it more. Scherzo still had a problem with gluttony, so the girl took a small bit and broke it into pieces for him.

"It was amazing." Jada almost sighed her response to the man's question. "She glowed like the suns. And she was so very magnificent..."

Burnish fully intended to grab as big a piece for himself as he could, but Folen stopped him with a dark look and a bolt of displeasure. The young bronze settled down next to the food and waited. Taking a piece when Folen nodded. But he wasn't very happy about it. He grumbled all the way back over to Folen as he found a place to eat his find.

Stripes was far more mannered as he landed next to the food and politely requested a scrap. Folen got a piece for him and gave the little blue's head a caress. "Good boy, Stripes. That's how you ask for food."

Burnish emitted another grumpy sound but subsided at Folen's look.

Shaking his head at the flitter's behavior he turned to smile at his fellow harpers. "I had heard of flights before, but the reality is something else all together. I'm afraid I am not so lyrical as you are Jada. But it was amazing to see. To me the flight was all raw power and emotion. I'm not even bonded to a dragon and I could feel the tension in the air. It was so strong you could almost see it. Well in fact you could see it in how the weyrfolk acted and reacted. I have never experience its like. I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to partake in a flight. It must be overwhelming."

M'dor nodded as Jada spoke, writing key words from her description in his horrible note-taking chicken scratch. He seemed to remember that other people were going to be reading it, and half way through his second word he changed it to something a little more legible. Even so, it was obvious that this was on Harper who would never, ever be left in charge of copying out Records (at least, not if anyone wanted to actually read them afterwards).

"I've always thought it was a bit feral myself, watching them blood the kills and bellow to each other. Kind of frightening if you've never seen a dragon before, or at least don't know how quiet and gentle they can be when they're not all riled." Thinking back to Ichoth's last Flight he couldn't help but smile a little. Flights were definitely not her favourite thing, even if they were a biological imperative.

It was Folen's turn next, and the Weyrsinger listening dutifully. It was interesting to see male and female perspectives. Jadamirei definitely seemed to romanticize the dragon, where as her male counterpart definitely focused on the reaction he felt from the people.

M'dor paused to jot down a few more key words from Folen's account, nodding along as he did so. "Alright. Impressions on Kaveth? What sort of song of praises do we want to sing?"

She'd gushed so much, frankly, that she had finally fell into rambling before his chicken scratch had made her voice trail off. A detail about the Weyrsinger that she'd forgotten. "Would you like me to take the notes, sir?" she asked, before scooting around to the other side of the table and sitting next to him.

"Luckily," she continued, after she had forcibly but politely appropriated the paper and writing utensil (after he'd jotted down what Folen had to say), "I didn't see the blooding part of it. Blood makes me a little- a lot- ill." Frankly, that was part of the reason she'd avoided that part of the flight. The dark-haired young woman kicked her leg out lightly, thoughtful. The idea of having to control a dragon... it was part of the reason that she harbored a desire for a male dragon. Of course, if she got a brown, she wouldn't be able to stay in Telgar. But a blue was a possibility... still, the way her friend spoke sometimes she wondered if it was worth it.

Yes. She wanted a dragon. She wanted to be one of the fortunate ones who could feel that... bond. Did she want it as strongly as she wanted her music? That was the question that ached. "Now, you asked what I felt about Kaveth? Well.. I guess what I said before. It was magnificent. She was so... amazing. I mean, I'd seen a few green flights, but they were just different to me. I think I'm romanticising the situation a bit in the fact that this flight was so important, too." she bit on her lower lip.

"Naturally we want to flatter the new Queen's ego, and Weyrwoman Malkai's." She flashed a grin at Folen and M'dor. And then she shut up, attention turning to her closest friend, to see what he thought.
PostPosted: Wed Feb 24, 2010 9:42 am

Folen smlied giving Jada a nod, "flattering the new leaders and their dragons is to be expected I should think. It's what everyone expects harpers to do after all. Even if they don't always realize the real reason we do it."

The young harper apprentice spoke slowly thinking though his thoughts as he spoke them. "I'm not sure flattery is necessary or would even work in Makai's case. I am not sure what if anything would impress her. But that's not really the goal of the song, is it?" Folen asked rhetorically as he turned a thoughtful look around the room. "It's about recording the event, but also supporting the weyr at the same time. While she gives nothing away, from what I've seen of her Makai is very dedicated to the weyr. If we support the weyr, then I think she will be pleased. Though I have a feeling we'll never know about it."

Laughing he paused to consider the question he hadn't really answered. "As to what I think of Kaveth, she is absolutely huge. I haven't met many other golds so I don't have much experience for comparison. But it's fair to say I don't ever want her really upset with me. Though that might just be the newness of being so close to so many dragons for the first time talking. But I have to agree Jada, she is defiantly magnificent, graceful is another good word, or majestic. Yes, I like majestic, but I am sure between us we can come up with a few more suitable adjectives."

"Ah. Would you be so kind?"

M'dor was more than pleased to hand over the recording bit to Jadamirei. Who better to write than someone with actual legible writing? It left the Weyrsinger with free hands, however, but he didn't seem too distressed by the fact. After all, now that he had both hands free he could gesture as much as he liked.

He nodded empathetically when the girl beside him mentioned being ill at the sight of blood. There were always a few candidates like that, most girls, who didn't enjoy blood. She would get over it if she ever got a dragon. The desire to please your little hatchling more often than not outweighed any kind of fears or hesitations a rider had. M'dor had faith that Jada would be able to feed her dragonet, should she ever Impress one.

"It was an important Flight," the Weyrsinger agreed, fingers itching to take notes but letting his female companion do all the writing. "Probably the most important Flight we've had… well, since Shaith Rose and made Hers the Weyrwoman I'd say." Folen was also on the right track with the flattery comment, and M'dor nodded along with what he was saying. "I think he's right about not impressing Malkai much, but I think Kaveth would enjoy it. She's a bit of a quiet one, but a good gold, and having a song written about you is always nice. I like majestic though. And graceful. That's a good word, make sure you write that one down."

Pausing to consider his options, he drummed his fingers on the table. What to write, what to write. "Should we make it an ensemble piece? Or a solo?"
PostPosted: Wed Mar 24, 2010 11:50 am

This was going to be the first piece she'd ever written with another person involved. All apprentices were expected to explore composition, it was an important part of being a Harper. Jada patted the Weyrsinger on the arm when she noticed his fingers twitching. Her hand danced over the page, scribbling neatly. "I'd say a small ensemble piece, maybe 2-3 instruments and a single voice?" she chewed on her lip, tapping her fingers on the table.

"What do you think?" she watched Allegretto land on the table, crooning a greeting to the other People. The question was aimed at Folen, but Allegretto started chirping at her as if she was telling Jada what she thought of the matter.

Perhaps she was.
