Dung. She was shoveling wherry dung- again. Wearily, Jadamirei leaned against her shovel. Her boots were tipped in it, and she scowled. One of her leather gloves was pulled off and she pulled out a scrap of cloth to wipe her brow. Judging by the sun, another candlemark until she'd be set free! She glanced over at the other workers, slipped her cloth back into her pocket, and pulled back on the leather glove.
Next to her, Scherzo chirped, watching Allegretto and Dolcissimo with interest. Alle was showing him how to help clean. The gold and green were picking up small lumps of poo and disappearing between. Where the dung was going, as it was not there when they returned, she had no idea. Tendrils of black hair stuck to the back of Jadamirei's slim neck as she worked. Above the working Candidates, dragons whirled and Jadamirei took a second to return a wave to her bluerider friend, Tethis.
Really, another hour of silence and this stifling heat would do her in.

Leaning his shovel against his slim hip, Kylar stretched his arms to the sky, twisting his shoulders until his spine cracked in a few places. Sweat beaded his skin, and the sun shone down relentlessly on his bare back, his shirt hanging from the waistband of his trousers.
Too sharding hot to be working in the sun, surrounded by wherry dung. It stunk, he stunk, and the work could easily have been done by dragon riders that could take the foul mess between. But to stay here, Kylar knew he had to work. All potential Candidates had to work in the Weyr until Impression, and then their work became an entirely different regime focusing on their new dragon.
Sighing wistfully at the thought of his own dragon, he glanced around the group shoveling with him, rubbing a hand through his spiky sandy-blonde hair. For the past hour or so, the antics of the fire lizards helping their master had amused him greatly, as did the antics of all flits. Amazing little creatures they were, and these three proved to be quite willing to help . . . Jada?
As a wing of riders swooped over-head, he watched one of the girls working with him wave to one of the blueriders, Tethis, if he could recall the name correctly. Which he usually did, having an affinity of keeping track of names and faces.
To know a dragonrider . . . to -be- a dragonrider. It had been his dream since boyhood, and almost a reality, but luck had passed him over once already, as it had abandoned him many times before.
Smiling to himself, he banished those thoughts and took a swig from his water skin, glancing at Jada as he swallowed the cool water down. He noticed she had none, and, stabbing the spade into the ground, he sauntered over to her with a bright grin and merry turquoise eyes, offering the skin.
"Thirsty?"

Her back was tired from all the lifting. Anyone could see she hadn't been lifting right- the people who worked with her often may have noticed that. Still, this was the first time someone had approached her to be social during working time except in the kitchens. Even if it was only a drink, it perked her up. Her skin was turning a bright red from the time in the sun- she'd forgotten a head covering too, and her naturally fair complexion still wasn't used to the outdoor work.
She turned as the voice came from one of the other Candidates who had been working with her. He looked friendly, his smile bright. This one was..... oooh, what was his name? K... Kyen? Kyle? Kyar? Kyar sounded right. But she didn't make a guess, instead giving him a tired smile. "I'd love some, if that's a real offer." She shoveled another lump of poo into the wagon at her side. She finally stabbed the shovel into the dirt, giving her full attention to the other Candidate. Had she met him before? "I'm Jada."
She gave him a slightly appreciative look from under her eyelashes, glad that her skin was already pink from sun. Really, it was hard not to appreciate someone who was so kindly offering to share their water with you, right? A roar from above, and she glanced back up at the sky as the riders streamed for the ground. Wing practice was over.

He laughed, a sound filled with warmth and merriment. It was the laugh of someone who made the sound often, who found great enjoyment in life. "Of course it's a real offer. Have you had people say 'Just kidding?' to you before?" Pushing the water skin in her hand, he glanced at her from beneath sandy blonde hair just a tad too long, as it kept falling into his eyes.
"Your flits are pretty amusing. I don't think I've seen any yet that are that hard working." His eyes lit up as he turned to watch them again, but he let his gaze meet hers, realizing that she had given him a glance just as he had done to her. Had she heard about his reputation? Gossip seemed to travel fast in the Weyr, as he had quickly found out.

She grinned at Kylar and took a sip from the water skin that he had pressed into her hand. "Maybe once or twice." she said vaguely. "Thank you." she passed the skin back to him, and followed his gaze to her flits. "The three of them are very hard workers, when they aren't causing me trouble."
Dolcissimo chirped at her, the noise distinctly unhappy. Dolci didn't like work, but Alle kept making her, and it wasn't fair! Scherzo's little head tilted and he skipped a bit. He'd hatched recently, and his wings were not completely up to snuff. Still, he gave it a valiant shot when he could. He could glide very well.
She returned her eyes to his face, almost startled to find that eh was looking at her again. "Anyways, I really appreciate the water."
