Oh how delicious the rumors were! If there was one thing that was Canoake's weakness, it was a good gossip. Especially, a gossip that she could use to advance herself further in the ranks. And nothing made her happier than to seem like one who was in the "Know" and willing to enlighten others. Just now, she was sitting on a boulder outside, in her favorite skirts of russet brown and deep red. She wore a loose top that for once wasn't cut low but was a lighter brown with red stitching and design upon. A red headband with beading kept her hair from her covering a rather pretty face.
Malkai had won the position of Weyrwoman with good timing! How that must be eating at Iva now. As a mere weyrbrat and candidate, she shouldn't be so concerned with the politics of it now. But as a woman determined to someday be a gold rider, Canoake payed very close attention to what was going on in her home, her weyr. She sighed, allowing the wheels in her head to turn rapidly as she watched dragons, riders, and weyrfolk alike lounging, cleaning and eating around the springs.
They really were a blessing.
Her eyes narrowed as a younger girl approached her. Not too common in features. Certainly, no match for her. Especially with the confidence that Canoake simply had no matter what... If she remember correctly, the girl came from a hall. She watched as the girl got closer and waited to see what move would be made.

Look for the beauty, hmm? Jadamirei eyed the package in her hands with a raised brow. One of the other Candidates had bribed her- not asked for a favor, but bribed!- her to take this package to the object of his devotion. He'd given her a description of her that would be fitting in a romance song. Raven locks and eyes of a green that would make a polished stone weep for lack of its own shine. She would have rolled her eyes at him if he wasn't so red-faced and sincere.
Canoake was the name, she believed. She'd heard about the girl, through a little conversation with others and through talk with Weyr workers. She'd never met her, however. And there she was. Jadamirei's eye caught on a rather pale-skinned young woman with hair as dark as her own. She was sitting on a rock, looking up at the dragons above. Really, the young Harper Apprentice felt a bit under-dressed approaching the girl. She wore her favorite brown breeches and a plain long-sleeved white top, black hair pulled back with a patternless blue scarf that almost matched her eyes.
She followed the other's gaze up to the dragons. Spinning and twirling as they normally did. New leadership seemed to have all of them more invigorated. Things would change under the leadership of Malkai and her Weyrleader. And soon, Jadamirei would have the chance to Stand. Have the chance to have a dragon of her own and join the wings wheeling in the sky. Her eyes lit with pride and hope and she gripped the package tighter in her hands, approaching the other female.
"Are you... Canoake?" she hoped she had the name pronounced correctly. "If so, I have a gift for you, from an admirer of yours." Jadamirei did not hold out the package, instead waiting for a reply from the other Candidate.

"Ca-noa-ke. Close enough, it is a rather exotic name. And a gift you say, from one of my admirers? How quaint. I wonder what it could be this time." Canoake didn't move from her location on the rock, it gave her the upper hand. Literally. If she didn't like what she heard or saw, she could simply turn, slide off and walk away. So what if it was deemed rude? She had no patience for the slow or incompentant.
Her green eyes narrowed as she inspected the girl closer. Another time, another place they might have been mistaken for sisters or possibly even friends. There was only one problem with that. Canoake didn't have friends. Acquaintances, perhaps. And maybe if she played her cards right, this one would be useful to her later in the future.
"Do he tell you what it was or am I going to have to rip into it like some simpleton?" Canoake asked with a raised eyebrow. She relaxed her position slightly so that she didn't seem as intimedating.

"He didn't tell me what it was, no; but you do have a third option, Canoake. Open it like a normal person would. Unless you'd like me to do it for you." she kept her tone even, almost cheerful at the end. "I like receiving presents." she gave the other woman a quick smile, before setting the present on the rock next to her.
She glanced back up at the dragon, giving the other female small glances from the corner of her eye. How Canoake chose to treat the gift would tell Jada a lot about her. She leaned back slightly, using the rock to hold one of her legs in place. "Do you spend a lot of your free time watching the dragons?"

"What a great idea! Men, and especially boys, have no sense of what a woman would actually want or like. So chances are it is not something I desire but you might." Sliding down so that her toes touched the ground, she took the present with a slow deliberate move. Nothing she did was without purpose or pose. Pretending to admire the wrapping, though she was positive her younger brothers could have done a better job, Canoake undid the ribbon and watched the worn hide fall to the ground.
It was a hairband. Which she would have admired if it were not for the fact that it was a dark blue. She wanted to hiss angrily. The girl constantly wore russet browns, dark and moody reds, and flashy golds. She. Did. Not. Wear. Blue.
Inside, she was having a fit like a spoiled little brat. But on the outside...
"Not my color at all. But if it is something you like, then why not? It would be a shame for his gift to go to waste, yes? What did you say your name was, hmmm? As for the dragons, only a fool would not admire them and their strength. I plan on that being my fate one day." Canoake gave her a sly look to see how the other girl would react.

"At least their hearts are in the right places." she managed to keep her face bland. How exactly was Canoake so entitled as to so casually disregard the hearts of her admirers? And next question, how had she gotten so many admirers? She must admit, the girl gave off the impression of grace, a sort of an aura that struck her as elegant. Something Jadamirei herself did not so much have.
When Canoake started to open the gift, Jadamirei took a single step closer, to watch as the gift was unveiled. The hairband revealed was a gorgeous shade of blue. The shade was rich, and the material obviously expensive. She couldn't hold back the soft sigh. She looked over at the other young woman, and her eyes widened in shock.
The other girl could read the expression likely as surprise that she had been offered such an impressive little trinket, but also there was surprise that the other Candidate could be so callous. She finally gave a smile, deliberately as sweet as she could make it. "Why thank you, Canoake." she was careful to pronounce the other young woman's name correctly. "It would be quite a shame if something so lovely were to go unappreciated." she reached out, lifting it up. "Thank you very much. As for my name, I'm Jadamirei."
Lifting her eyes back to the sky, her face relaxed into something more peaceful, the strain relaxing from the corner of her expressive eyes as she watched a dragon dive and twirl. "I think that is the goal of every Candidate in this Weyr. That one day we'll be dragonriders." That one day we will protect our loved ones from Thread. "I find it admirable that you have such firm determination."

"A man's heart is never in the right place, m'dear, unless he is trying to find a way to get something he wants. In the case of a woman it is normally three things: good sex, good food or a good home. And it a well known fact, that most men will do what is required to get one of those three things." Canoake stopped and thought for a moment. She knew that most men did not acknowledge liking other men unless they were dragon riders who accepted pretty much whatever they wanted. "Unless they like men and in that case, it is still the same thing."
Canoake watched the play of emotions fly across the other young woman's face. Really, had she no world experience at all? It might be amusing and useful to take this... Jadamirei under her wing. After all, Canoake was well known in the weyr, this girl obviously was not. There was the possibility that she could learn something that might be useful to both of them. Finally and deliberately coming down off her high...rock, Canoake gave the girl a practiced smile. "Blue is much more your color than mine, Jadamirei."
That's it, use the girl's name. Gain her confidence. Canoake thought to herself. She slowly moved around the girl, trying to take her in without seeming to be looking her over like one would look over a runner beast. She was a bit taller than the other girl but not much. Maybe, just maybe this might work. "It is not a dream that one should hope for but a dream that one should make sure that they achieve. After all, life without purpose... Without determination, is not really life is it?"
She posed this question to test the girl, see how she would respond. The right answer and this girl would make an excellent student. What was the saying, one from much older days? The enemy of my enemy is my friend?

Jadamirei's eyes widened and she looked at Canoake with a look of shock on her face, the pale skin turning a bright red at her bluntness. Rather then stammer, she remained quiet until the blush faded from her skin. By this time Canoake had slipped off the rock and was moving around her. "I do like the color blue." she said with a smile, proud of her unreadable voice- even if her face were an open book.
Something about the other Candidate was slightly intimidating, and Jada responded by tilting her chin up a bit instinctively as though to challenge her before her own head tilted back down into a more submissive position and she watched Canoake through her lashes. "Determination comes in many forms, and there are many goals in life that one could have. Someone told me once, that 'Purpose is fluid as Dragonflight, always shifting in the wind to accommodate necessity.'"
Who had said that? She couldn't really remember. It might have been her father. "I believe a person needs to take life one step at a time. Impetuosity can be as much a curse as a blessing." Like her own decision to come to the Weyr. It had been both curse and blessing. She was discovering hard work, and here she was also discovering herself. "Plans are good, but nothing is set in stone. Especially not with dragons. We don't make their choices for them!"

How the girl turned red! This was simply amusing to Canoake though she did not let it play across her face. That simply would not do at all. When the girl jutted her chin up in defense, she stopped walking around the other girl and turned back to watch the dragons and their riders.
Weyrfolk.
Most of them went about their lives in a rut, a cycle. The same routine every day. At least, with the dragon riders, they had free time. Had a chance to go someplace else or see something new. Not that many would accept Telgar riders but a rider could go anywhere on the back of their beast could take them. She wanted to sigh but kept her thoughts reigned tightly.
"Very well spoken. It is nice to see another young woman who is not filled with foolish thoughts. Make sure you keep them straight. Too many strong minded woman let their hearts rule and look what happened?" Canoake bit her tongue. Her mother and father seemed happy enough. "As for the dragons, they know their own mind. It is our job to make sure we have the strongest minds to attract them."
With a little bit of emotion and the right play on words. Canoake smiled brightly and looked her over again. "Maybe, we should work on making sure your mind is a strong one. And making sure you look like a woman and not another scruffy kitchen boy. What do you say, hmmm?"

What was wrong with letting the heart rule over the mind? Jada felt her brow furrow as Canoake spoke of something that ran almost contrary to her own feelings on the matter. She always let her heart be her guide. If you did what you thought was right, wouldn't it all turn out in the end? She bit her lip, watching Canoake carefully through lowered lashes. Releasing it, she was looking at the other Candidate attentively before the young woman turned back around to her.
The strongest minds to attract them? "Well, I certainly thought my mind was strong." she said faintly. "And..." she looked like a kitchen boy? She glanced down her body, eyes uncertain again. She worked hard to try and stay looking her best, even if she didn't dress fancy. Especially since she had come to the Weyr, her clothes had become more serviceable than decorative. She felt her lips turn down in a small frown and then looked back at Canoake. Her turn to ask a question. "Will you at least let the poor boy," the unfortunate lad was likely waiting impatiently for news of Canoake's response, "who gave you the hairpiece know that his gift was received?"

"Everyone thinks their minds are strong, Jadamirei. It is one thing to think and it is another to know. And as for the boy, I will wave to him during the meals or drop him a smile in passing and he will be happy." Truthfully, Canoake had already dismissed him from her mind. She had moved onto the next idea and step in her mind.
And that was to train this girl.
It might be amusing. After all, she had craft or hold connections. Connections were most important if one wanted to move up in life. Canoake was determined not to be left behind in the caverns. "Unless, you want to go back and give him the message? I am sure he must have gave you something to make it worth your while to seek me out. Of course, I wouldn't let him see you wearing the headband. Not yet anyways. Give it a day or two and then I can say something silly like I let you borrow it."
Now to offer a little kindness. "I might even have a dress or blouse to match it. Something I would rarely wear but I will admit I keep all my clothing in good condition. I even make my own patterns from time to time."

This woman, this girl, in front of her was very cold. How disappointing. Still, maybe Canoake didn't realize the impact of her cruelty? However beautiful the other girl was in the face, that mind of hers was awfully twisted. She felt her lower chin start to jut out in a belligerent, upset expression and caught it before it could be completed.
No, she wouldn't share that emotion with Canoake. "I will need to get back to him eventually. He was very excited about the gift's reception." He'd been saving up for it for a long time, he'd said. But a shy enough lad he'd been that he was unwilling to approach the object of his devotion himself.
Intelligent boy, and lucky. It would devastate him to know the truth.
Then Canoake said something that made Jada smile, eyes lightening. See, Canoake did have something good about her, a generosity? That meant that perhaps she was not so cold of heart as she had come to seem based on the conversation they'd had so far. "I have a few dresses if you'd like to see them? I'm not completely left without anything feminine..." her voice trailed off. Nothing she had would really compare to even the outfit that Canoake was wearing at the moment. Her outfits were all simple, nothing that truly popped. "What kind of patterns do you make?"

"I think you can honestly say that the recipient of the gift thinks it's very lovely. You do, don't you?" Canoake asked slyly. She watched the smile and gave on back. She hadn't quite meant to admit to making patterns. However, Canoake was not going to shy away from a chance to make herself look good.
"My mother and father are bother weavers and so I know all the basic patterns and so more of the fancy trim. I can make the little flowery designs that Lady Holders seem to enjoy so much and I occasionally make my own as I go along." Canoake replied smartly.
So the girl had dresses, hmmm? Most woman just put on shifts and hoped they looked appealing in them. "Did you have them tailored to you?"

Oh, that was clever, and she wouldn't have to feel like a liar when she told the adoring lad his present had been well-received. "I must admit I find it quite lovely." she agreed, looking over the blue hair piece again. Too bad it hadn't been a gift for her; the fact would always taint it in some way. It would not, however, stop her from using it at some point. She wasn't that much the goody-goody.
"I've no skill for Weaver Craft." Jada grinned at Canoake, opening up as the other Candidate did. "In fact, I can barely mend anything without poking myself in the fingers. I'm afraid I'll be horrible at it when it comes time to mend riding leathers. Do they give lessons on that sort of thing as Weyrlings?" Maybe the other girl would know? "And some of my gowns have been taken in some to fit better, but specifically tailored to me, only one." they were hand-me-downs, she believed. Excepting the blue dress, which her mother had procured custom-made for her as a 'Good luck' before Jada left for Telgar Weyr.

"Good. And next time there is a Gather or you dress up for a Seventh Day dinner, you can wear it and look pretty." Now that that problem was solved, Canoake listened with one ear as the girl chattered on. A brown had flown over them. K'led of Huuranth is she made her guess correctly. The one who had told her that his dragon's nails were better than hers.
She looked at her nails and then at Jadamirei's fingers. The girl had nice hands. Drat. She must have some sort of secret to keep them looking unworked. "I have a proposition for you. You help my hands look like yours. Nice nails and soft skin, I shall teach you one of my personal patterns. Deal?"
