User ImageName: Ian Hammit
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Physical description: Ian’s a fairly average looking man. Topping out at 5’ 10” he’s a bit on the skinny side, the polite word for it is lean. He’s a soft face, but not fat, just slim, with a slight pointed chin. Eyes of misty green under slanted brown brows. His hair he wears in a fashion that doesn’t really match his age, a combination of short cut sides and a long…. ‘comb’ over. It’s hard to describe, but is also a rather dense brown. He’s quick to smile and joke, normally laughing the loudest. He grows what little he can on his chin in hopes of someday making a goatee. He is fair of skin, with quite a few facial piercings. One hoop in his left eyebrow, a barbell in the right, a labret stud(the one below the bottom lip), 00 gauge ear plugs in both ears, and an industrial and two hoops in the left ear.

He dresses rather plainly, normally in just t-shirts and jeans. Heavy on the band shirts, mainly from those that he’s played with. Ian tends to favor your average Chuck Taylor style shoes, the plain black ones.

Ian’s a bit of an accessory whore. Not only donning all his piercings he likes to wear the irritatingly popular belt bracelets from hot topic and sometimes has an accompanying neck bracelet as well.

He’s a 32 year old man who never grew out of looking like a 21 year old. He’ll still get carded for drinks…

Personality: Ian is a bit of a red herring. To look at him you’d think he’s someone much more serious and dangerous than he actually is. Underneath that tough veneer is a kind and friendly person. Ian is someone who likes to joke around and be with people, but will usually guard himself rather closely. He’s great a parties because he’ll talk to everyone and almost never talk about himself.

He’s the kind of man who limits his true friends to small core group. A group he normally doesn’t have a lot of time to see but they’re friends for life and he keeps in contact via e-mail more often than cell phone.

If he has a downfall, and don’t we all, it’s that he likes vices. Mainly he’s a bit of a drunk. That is in no way saying that he is an alcoholic. He’s not addicted, but he does enjoy the feeling of getting a bit buzzed.

Ian is happiest when he’s got easy access to both company and place where he can get away and live in his mind for a little while. If he’s got his guitar and cold beer, than life couldn’t be much better for him.

History/background: Ian grew up in a home of 3, two normal parents and himself, the unnatural child. Well, to say unnatural is incorrect, he just wasn’t a very good fit with his right wing, 3rd generation lawyer, parents. He wasn’t a rebel, he didn’t make waves and terrorize his parents, he was just different. If they wanted to go to a movie he’d want to go to a museum. If they wanted him to be a doctor he wanted to be a penniless writer. There never seemed to be a time when they could agree on anything. During his childhood this led to many conflicts and minor arguments. So much that the family ended up seeing a family counselor. And after all the sessions and outpourings from the heart, the counselor told them what they already knew. Ian was just who he was, and no amount of pressuring him would change it. They would always stand on two sides of a line, but as long as they could see eye to eye the family would survive.

In school he didn’t have trouble; he got along with the other kids and had decent report cards, with a noted talent for writing and music. His parents never really understood him, but they were still proud if not puzzled by their only child. It came to the point that they just wanted him to exceed, in whatever it was that chose to do.

It wasn’t until he got to middle school that his inner rock star surfaced. He just caught the tail end of 80’s thrash metal and discovered his true love. He finished his high school education, and went directly to being a guitarist in a garage band of head bangers. And when he finally landed a job as an on scene reporter for a music magazine, his life was by all his accounts perfect. His assignments consisted of joining a tour for a few stops while living on the bus with the band and crew and conducting interviews while experiencing what exactly it was to be on the road. His column, “Turn the Page”*, became a smash hit with the readers who were just as desperate as he was to see what it was like being a rock star.

Traveling the globe on the magazine’s dime and meeting all of his heroes, Ian spent the majority of his twenties living the dream. He spent those years studying and collating data on these rock gods, and inside his head he began to fashion characters out of them placing them in any number of strange scenarios. A small hobby that he never really expected to do anything with; just an amusing way to pass the time.

And when the journalism world began to flounder and Ian found himself out on his ear, he finally began to eat into his trust fund from his grandparents. Living off of that and the promise that his parents would find him a ‘suitable’ job now, Ian was desperate for something to stave off the boredom.

Why they applied: Ian’s been sitting around for a while, living off the money of his dead grandparents since he lost his job working for a music magazine. This gave him ample opportunity to begin his work with the characters he’d been creating for years. Taking a particular favorite of his, he began working out a full fledged novel for him. Hearing about the once in a life time opportunity to work with the famous Benjamin Baenare, Ian immediately sent in his application for perusal. It was time to open the next chapter in his life…

*-“Turn the Page” is a song by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band about life on tour and the hardships one faces therein. Also it was covered by Metallica and released as a single by them.

User ImageName: James Alan
Age: 35
Gender: Male
Species: Human with a cybernetic prosthetic arm and control chip.
Physical description: James has a commanding physical presence, wide of shoulder and narrow of hip. He stands at 6’ 2” with most of his frame being taken by leg and a Caucasian complexion. With a face like stone, straight angles with a sharp slender nose and slashing cheek bones, he’s not exactly handsome but he’s got good bones. James has seen quite a few years and most of them have been unkind to him. His eyes are hard and cold, a pale ice blue that are always taking in all his surroundings. His mouth is almost always frowning, tensed, or sneering. Lucky for him, his hairline isn’t receding yet, the gilded dark blond locks are normally slicked back from his face. James grows his sideburns down to meet his beard, which he keeps well trimmed.

Probably the main defining feature of James is his prosthetic arm. Lost in a previous incident on the job, James replaced his right arm from just above the elbow down with a cybernetic prosthetic. It’s grafted to his body and the outer hooks are visibly digging into his skin. It serves as an advantage to him though as it is equipped with a personal computer; a small screen sits on the ‘wrist’ of the unit. Less Buzz Lightyear and more like the pip boy from Fallout 3. To aid in his occupation, his computer is equipped with a small light scanner, basically a device to scan items for fingerprints and other meticulous details. Also, in order to control his new appendage, James had to have a control chip installed in his cerebrum so that his neural signals could be translated to commands for the arm. For a side trip of information, this is not a normal practice, and James is serving as a kind of test subject for the company that did it. There could be side effects that have yet to be discovered from the process…

James has a simple and classic fashion sense. Clean button down shirts in dark colors, primarily black, but sometimes he goes wild and uses dark blues and greens. To accommodate his arm, he’ll normally cut off the right sleeve and hem it. Well fitting black slacks or dark jeans are the pant of choice. Which, oddly enough, are often matched with a chain wallet. (How 90’s!) Last but not least, he wears his old detective shield on a thin leather strap around his neck. It’s a small iron cross looking chip that stores all of his official information. His has been deactivated but he still wears it all the time.

As a side note, James is ambidextrous due to his 6 months of having no right arm. He had to learn to use the left and can now use them both with almost equal control.

Personality: James is a hard edged man. Jaded and cold, he’s seen a lot in his time and most of it was not pretty. For ten years of his life, between the ages of 22 and 32 he served in the police force. His tenacity and drive propelled him from officer to detective rather quickly where he flourished but the moment he received his Lieutenant’s commission friction started to grow between he and his captain. James was by no means the ‘loose cannon’ cliché, he was just extremely driven to supply justice and that term was very much open to interpretation for him. It was not uncommon for rumors to spread about his practices being… shady. The man has an unfailingly grip on his temper and he’s discovered that a cold rage gets much more from people than the quick flash of fire. Due to his history as a detective he’s a very observant man, with a fairly accurate BS detector, but you know, you can’t win ‘em all.

Despite the fact that James is only 35 years of age, he seems older. He’s a recovering alcoholic, what started as a nasty habit at the time of joining the force grew into a choking weed by the time he was ejected. After half a year of drinking himself into a meaningless stupor, James clawed his way out of the pit of addiction and sought to begin again, getting himself the cybernetic arm and putting down the bottle. It’s a touchy subject for him, and by touchy he means that he will walk away from a conversation heading that direction. Yes, he is very much tempted by the bottle on a regular basis; this is a very tipsy wagon he rides. He’s taken to smoking now instead of drinking. Cause there’s such a BIG difference. /sarcasm

He’s not un-feeling, there’s a deep capacity for him to feel. He just guards himself closely, too many years spent with people hating you or trying to ruin you have turned him callous. James is slow to trust and quick to point out flaws, but not necessarily in a cruel way. It’s more that he points out faults to try and let one improve them self. Coincidentally, James does not take criticism well; he’ll brood about it and then mostly just ignore it unless it’s pounded upon him consistently. This is why he failed at the force. But inside, he’s a… well really he’s a right b*****d, but underneath that he’s probably lonely, you would be too if nobody liked you!

The story: As it stands now, is under construction!
Our story begins with James at age 35. He’s been off the force for two years, owner of the prosthetic arm for 1 and a half. Knowing nothing else to do with himself, he opens a private detective agency in a different city than the one he served in. Despite his rough parting with the force he garners quite a few customers due to recommendations from ex-fellow officers and detectives.

One stormy evening (because good film noir beginnings always happen on a stormy evening), our stalwart detective is called upon by his former employers, the police. (Seriously, I don’t know the parameters of the world so for now, they’re just the police.) Anyhow, murder most foul has occurred and not a clue left behind. A man, the leading scientist and developer of the cybernetic prosthetics and implants, was killed. For a bit of history, cybernetics were not frowned on, in fact they were very much welcomed. It was a new and shining avenue of science, one many hoped would usher in a new quality of life for everyone. Due to his connection with the company, being a customer and all, the police have asked James to work as professional consultant civilian. Underneath the lines, they’ve given him full access to all the case files, and put the investigation under his hands.

Over the course of the investigation we’ll see James have to deal with his struggle with sobriety, a lesson in learning to trust others, and the betrayal that may come with it. And of course, unraveling the mystery of who would kill a man doing so much to help the community.

The Writer <-- Current stage!
Your character is arriving as they are in the real world - a regular old human being, their regular old self. Maybe they're fat, maybe they're skinny, maybe they're nerdy looking, or maybe they're tough stuff with a mohawk. one thing is for certain, they sure are excited to be at this workshop.

Complete Workshop [o]

Stage 1
Oh No! David Bowie was right - you're turning to face the strange with changes! Suddenly you're beginning to look and feel a little different. Maybe you're growing younger, or older. Maybe your hair is growing longer. Maybe you have wings, or scales, or teeth, or are feeling more bold, more vicious. One thing is for certain: you know you're not who you were the day before.

stage 1 > stage 2
2 journal entries [o] [o]
2 pd's [o] [o]
2 mini quests ( based on your story's plot) [o] [o]
growth quest [o]

Stage 2
Some time has passed since you began your journey into being a fictitious character you yourself have created. Your changes have become more extensive. You're beginning to recognize yourself as the character you had envisioned for your novel, both physically, and to a degree mentally. Maybe you're having trouble remembering things, or maybe you're not. You're not that character yet, and your mannerisms may still be out of tune, or certain things not yet developed.

stage 2> stage 3
3 journal entries [o] [o] [o]
3 pd's [o] [o] [o]
3 mini quests ( based on your story's plot) [o] [o] [o]
growth quest [o]

Stage 3
You've done it! You've completed the story, and, consequentially, may finally understand Baenare's famous quote 'Write What You Know'. You are truly living the life of the character you created. Maybe you're a stunning prince charming, or a valiant knight, or an evil warlock /dragon. Your transformation has been completed, and you are now to be faced with the difficult decision of whether or not you wish to stay or wish to finally go home.
