It's Growing Time Again!

"This is ridiculous!" her mom groaned as she looked into the fridge. It was one of the few nights that Mom was actually home in a long while. She was leaning into the fridge, looking around for any sort of leftovers and was failing to find anything. "I know that yesterday, we had at least a half a pizza and a half bowl of spaghetti left!" Of course, none of it had been prepared by Mrs. Spectre. She couldn't cook for the life of her, so it was usually food-to-go. In her frustration, the woman semi-slammed the door to the refrigerator shut. She had been hoping for a simple reheat and serve sort of night. None of the extra phone calls or waiting for food to arrive or possibly even driving someplace to pick food up.

Rounding the corner from the kitchen, she made her way to the dining room table, which had a tall blonde girl sprawled out working on her homework for the evening. The redhead stopped behind her daughter. "Ellie, do you know what happened to all of the leftovers from last night?"

The girl didn't look up from her work. "I ate it."

The woman behind her blinked. "You ate it? How could you eat a half pizza and half a bowl of spaghetti?!"

The girl shrugged in an unenthusiastic manner. "Was hungry I guess?" As if she remembered something important, the tomboy suddenly turned to face her mother. "Oh yeah, and we're out'a my burritos too!"

The woman took a step back. "I checked last night and you had half a box left. That normally lasts you 3 days!"

Another indifferent shrug. "Eh, I was hungry, so shoot me?"

Letting out a frustrated sigh, the woman turned away, bringing a hand up to her head, fingers clenching through her hair. She'd definitely have to go out now, which was perhaps the last thing she wanted to do after the way work had treated her today. Yet, something seemed vaguely familiar about all of this.

Ellie was a girl with a healthy appetite normally. Yet, this was obviously beyond her usual hunger. Eating practically everything in the fridge was nor her usual mode of operation. The last time her daughter had done that was...

"Oh god!" she groaned out.

...was when she was 12 years old. Shortly after that, her daughter shot up in height like a sunflower. At 13 years, Ellie Spectre would tower over most girls, and even many adults.

Golden eyes had followed the redhead curiously, or perhaps she was just taking a break from her assignment. Though, it was probably just curiosity, since the tomboy was very good about finishing her homework without getting distracted. The quicker she finished, the more time she had to work in the garage. It was plenty good incentive to not get distracted now.

"Oh god what?" the blonde eventually prompted the woman. She leaned back in her chair so the front legs were lifted up on the air (something which infamously would upset her Mom on a regular basis).

The woman's own golden eyes soon enough met the blonde's eyes. It almost seemed as if they were filled with horror. "I don't think I can survive another growth spurt from you, Ellie."

"...wait, what?" the tomboy chuckled out, not really certain about what her Mom was saying.

The woman, as if feeling more strain, pulled up a chair at the table and sat down. She didn't even seem to notice how Ellie was tipping her chair back. "Ellie, have your calves been sore lately?"

"Wow... talk 'bout a random question... uh, yeah, my legs have been feelin' a bit stiff lately..."

It was obviously not the answer the woman wanted to hear, for she soon enough buried her eyes in the palms of her hands. "Well, there goes our food budget for the month... maybe even two months..." she groaned out.

"Dude, yer actin' weird right now, Mom!" The teenager's eyes climbed up to the ceiling, growing bored of looking at her mom.

"You remember how I told you that no matter what you eat, you don't grow fat? You grow tall. Well..." the woman sighed. "I think you are going to be growing again soon..."

"Uh..." Ellie's lips smacked together as she seemed to think this statement over. Yeah, she had heard her mom jokingly say that in the past, sometimes in whispers, sometimes at those obnoxious business parties that she was forced to go along for. "I guess I remember it..."

"You are going to eat us out of house and home, Ellie... just like last time..." It was clearly an exaggeration, but it didn't mean her mom was any less upset.

"Eh... whatever!" Lifting up her feet from the ground, she rocked back forward on her chair, landing abruptly back into the normal sitting position. The already tall girl pushed her chair out and stood up. "Look, I'll take care of gettin' dinner t'night... I'll even go grab my burritos too..."

The woman seemed a little dazed from this realization. In a dulled voice, she merely answered "Credit Card's in my purse."

"Got it!" With that, Ellie jogged off to the kitchen to go get the mentioned credit card. This wasn't a big deal, so why was her mom making it such a big deal? With a shrug, she located the card and then ran to the garage. At least she'd be able to get a good ride with the Spectrum tonight.

When the girl got back an hour later with Chinese food and a couple boxes of burritos, she'd find her mom had abandoned the dining room table, but left a different credit card and a note.

Use this to buy your food until I tell you to give this back.

~ Mom

"Eh, whatever." The girl simple switched the credit cards so that her new one was in her pocket and the one she borrowed was now on the table. It was no big deal. Really.

Did I really need this talk?

The Spectrum was wounded.

Ellie's pride and joy was thrashed.

She rode it to Hank's place of business, rounding to the garage as if she owned the place. The tomboy didn't own the place, but she had been there so much as she grew up, it was like a second home. Phil was in the garage and stood himself up from where he had been lounging on the side. It was obvious something was wrong. The weak sound the Spectrum was making was enough of a hint that it was in need of some serious repair. He dared not breathe out a single insulting word in his friend's direction.

The teenager whipped off her helmet and threw it to the side. Her expression was one of pure rage. She walked past Phil, but not without grunting out "What th'f*ck are ya lookin' at?" He shook his head and looked away. She marched her way into Hank's office. He wasn't with a client, but even if he had been, it was pretty obvious she would have "cut in line" to get his attention like a spoiled child.

"Hank! I need yer professional opinion!" her voice roughly demanded of her Dad's friend.

He was merely sitting in his chair at his desk and looked up. He sighed, as if he could already tell what the problem was. The dark-haired middle aged man rubbed his temples and readjusted his glasses before stating in a rather dull tone "Ellie, sit down."

"I need ya t'go out t'the garage and take a look at my bike!"

The man's voice grew louder and a bit stern. "Ellie, sit down!"

She grumbled rather loudly, but grudgingly did as told. This man was someone she respected, not only as a professional in the industry she wanted to join up with, but he was a family friend. Her dad's friend. Her arms did manage to cross, showing that she wasn't looking forward to what was being said.

The man remained sitting at his desk and sighed heavily again. It was a bit awkward, since he had a tendency to leave long pauses at unnecessary points. "Look, Ellie. I realize you are doing that whole teenage rebellion thing. Umm..."

There was the first pause. Hank had no kids of his own, and it easily showed.

"I'd like to think I was 'down' with the 'scene' like you kids... but at the same time, I'm an adult. I'd like to think I am 'cool.'"

Rather bluntly, Ellie blurted out "You ain't."

That created another lengthy pause. The man rubbed at his chin, which was rough thanks to the shadow of his facial hair. "Maybe you don't realize it, but people worry about you."

Ellie's voice was flat. "I know."

The man pushed his glasses up along the bridge of his nose again. "You do not act like it. Um..." His eyes shot up towards the ceiling, as if trying to find the right words, or maybe even trying to remember something he had been told before. "You do things without ever thinking it through... it makes you come across as an uncaring jackass." Hank wasn't against cursing in front of Ellie. She was 17 years old and could hear the curse words. "You are reckless. You get yourself beat up on a whim. You probably put yourself in danger with how you ride your vehicle around too. It just ain't right!"

The blonde let out a less-than-dignified snort. "It ain't right that I don't like playin' with dolls and drinkin' tea with my girlfriends?!" There was plenty of sarcasm to be had.

Hank wasn't suckered into it. He kept his voice stoic. "I didn't say that, don't go twisting my words around like that. I just think you should think about how your actions would affect others." The man coughed, which more or less signaled that he was done lecturing.

Golden eyes rolled up towards the ceiling. Same old Hank playing father. She didn't have to listen to him about this sort of stuff. He wasn't her father. Her father was off selling cars, not fixing them. There was a long pause, as if Ellie was leaving time for her mentor to give anymore advice. When the air was left silent for long, the tomboy finally reminded the man of why she was in his office. "So yeah... that expert opinion? I have an idea as t'what I need t'get... but I wanted t'run it past ya first." She didn't give the man a chance to respond and turned back towards the door she had entered from.

Hank pushed himself up out of his chair and stood there for a moment. His sigh was perhaps loud enough for everyone in the building to hear. That girl was going to be the death of his nerves.

Jogging to school apparently is an invitation for a Foreign Exchange student to challenge Ellie to a race.

Tools of the Trade (Ellie + ********* style="font-size: 11px">It had been so difficult lately to catch Ellie at home. ********* had no clue why, but every time she attempted to catch Ellie at home after school, the teen ran off quite quickly with a rather determined look in her eyes. It was a puzzle to say the least, but no burden to the feline. She was patient enough to wait.

And wait.

And still wait.

Today though, it seemed that Ellie had been a bit too slow in her departure from the house. Before she could step out upon arrival, the feline had managed to take a seat at the front door.

"Hello Ellie," was the simple greeting the cat offered the moment the blonde attempted to step over her.

The girl was dressed up in her garage suit. "What th'hell do ya want, cat?"

"*********," the feline corrected.

"Cat," Ellie clarified, not seeming to change her selection in titles one bit. She let out a small snort, obviously irritated by this interruption in her daily schedule. "I ain't got th'time fer this, cat, hurry th'hell up!"

Despite all the hostility thrown in her direction, ********* was still able to keep a rather peaceful smile upon her maw. "My, my, someone is in a hurry. It is almost impossible to get in touch with you. Where have you been going the past week or so?"

"It ain't yer concern, cat!" The girl made a deep throaty sound and rather suddenly spit a loogey at the cat in an effort to scare ********* away.

Despite how gross and flat out rude the tomboy was acting at the moment, ********* still was sitting there calmly with that almost constant cheery smile. Even with a glob of disgusting spit now dripping off her shoulder. In a tone that was polite, the cat merely mentioned "I think that was quite unnecessary." The manx still had important matters to tend to, and no spit was going to prevent her from doing her duties.

Ellie was still glaring at the cat, absolutely baffled as to why she hadn't dodged or run off after what had happened. "Seriously, you are one f*cked up cat! Just go away, can't ya see I'm busy?!" Giving up on the notion of the tailless cat running off, Ellie attempted a new strategy that was not very fitting of her personality: she ran.

The cat let out an airy laugh before standing up to her own paws. "Oh no, you won't get rid of me that easily!" And so the chase began.

The girl ran and ran and ran. Behind her, a persistent delicate jingling bounced around behind her. She was able to make out the words "Why are you dodging me today?" but the teenager ignored the prompts. She ran and ran and ran until she was at Hank's place. Since the cat had been behind her, Ellie had lost track of where she was. She entered the open garage area where Phil greeted her.

She was safe.

Until a small jingling sound began to make its way into the garage.

"A cat?" Phil laughed in disbelief, since animals were usually frightened off by the sounds and the mere hustle-and-bustle of the place. "That has GOT to be a first!"

Mentally, Ellie was screaming out all sorts of obscenities. Yet she let out an uncaring "Whatever..." in response to her friend.

The cat padded in as if she already knew the whole joint and instead of making her way to Ellie, she made her way to Phil. The redhead laughed a bit, but didn't lean down to pet her. So she rubbed up against the rough material of his pants leg. To accent her point, she let out a soft purr.

"Oh wow, what a friendly little thing!" Even Phil wasn't immune to the charms of the spotted manx. His fingers eventually crept down to pay attention to the cat.

Ellie was already sick of this. "Ya know where I'll be!" she grunted out before stomping off.

"Eesh! Wonder what's got her in such a bad mood?" The redhead was clueless that the source of the bad mood was at his ankles, purring sweetly. He eventually dared to pick up the cat (and finally identifying that the cat was a girl) and brought her along to where Ellie was. "Ya better not tell Hank that this cat was 'ere! He'd get all over our cases!"

Normally, Ellie would have shot back at him with something like "I don't work 'ere, so only you'd get sh*t!" but she was painfully silent. She was crouched to the side of a very familiar yellow vehicle.

********* had seen it before.

Well, that explains everything

The motorcycle which Ellie so fondly called The Spectrum stood there with one half in ruins. Certainly, a lot of work had been done already, but it did not seem like it was even close to being completed. ********* was not the sort to frown, but she did let out a soft sympathetic mewing sound.

It was dark before Ellie left, but when she had to return home, she said her goodbyes to Phil.

Not wanting to get left behind, the feline squirmed around in Phil's hands until he put her down. She then ran off after Ellie.

The blonde sighed out heavily as she caught the sound of the bell behind her again. "F*ck off cat!"

Only once she was certain nobody but Ellie could hear her, the guardian simply stated "You know, you could have just told me about your bike." She paused thoughtfully. "I know how much work you put into it to begin with. It showed with how proud you were of The Spectrum. I can feel your loss."

"Why should I have?! It ain't yer business!" Ellie was such a stubborn mule at times.

"I would have understood. I'm not angry." Her tone was genuine, but that was because ********* always spoke in such a genuine manner.

It was perhaps a change from all the anger and concern that had been shoved in Ellie's direction lately, but it didn't change the fact she still didn't like talking about it. "So what th'hell was so important that ya had t'pester me all afternoon, cat?"

"********* style="color: gray">The cat merely walked along behind the tall girl, continuing on the conversation casually. "Well, I figured you probably wanted to train yourself in regards to using your Rainbow Revenge, so I brought you something that could help you. Well... later on. You still need to learn how to form the rainbow...but still, this will help you after that step..."

"Yer ramblin'..." The teen's voice sounded disinterested.

"Then I will make this short. I left it to the side of your house. It might be a bit dirty, but it should still work plenty fine. I hope you put it to good use!"

Things grew rather quiet behind Ellie, and soon enough, she figured out why it seemed quiet. There was no more bell jingling with the movements of the cat. Glancing around casually, her golden eyes noticed there was nothing following her anymore. "About damned time!" she snorted out before resuming her trip home.

When she arrived, she went to the side of her house, searching the side furthest from the garage first. She found nothing. Next she searched the side that was closest to the garage.

"You have GOT t'be SH*TTIN' ME!!!"

In Ellie's hand was a boomerang. A bright yellow boomerang.

"Son ov'a b*tch!"

Hot Patootie!

"Come on Chica, you can't hide in there forever!" There was a knock on the bedroom door as two boys were inevitably waiting for Ellie Spectre to exit.

"You promised Ellie! Come on, ya know ya can't break a promise!" Jared looked as if he was pouting behind his fake mustache.

Zuniga clapped a hand onto the blonde boy's shoulder, as if to signal that he should calm down. The tan boy's costume was relatively simple. A soccer jersey of Zidane. "Dude, let it slide... she can take however long she wants..."

Behind the door, the tomboy was rolling her eyes as she was preparing the final details to her outfit. "God, I don't know how I let ya guys talk me inta' this! I should seriously pummel ya both fer this!"

She had been obsessing over The Spectrum for about two weeks straight. Every moment she was at school she was grumbling, and ever moment away from school was spent repairing the vehicle at Hank's garage. Zuniga and Jared couldn't help but look back and forth to each other at lunch time as Ellie literally just ranted about how school was getting in the way of her work.

"Enough's enough, Chica," Zuniga said. "You need to take a day off. You'll have gray hair before you turn 20 at this rate!"

The blonde thrust a flyer at the tall girl. "Go with us to this Carnival, Ellie! Just let loose like ya used t'do!"

One lunch period later, Ellie had somehow been talked into going to this Halloween Festival.

With a saxophone slung over her shoulder, the girl swung the door open wide and stepped out. Some people did zombies. Some did motorcyclists. Ellie Spectre had decided to do both. She was decked out in classic motorcycle gear and had her hair slicked back a bit so that it would get too obnoxious without her hair band. Along her forehead was a line with dribbles of fake blood.

"Niiiice... Eddie from 'Rocky Horror Picture Show,' right Chica?" The Latino approved, since his passion for motorcycles was always rivaled by the tomboy.

Jared looked a bit dumbfounded. "Rocky Horror? Isn't that the one with Tim Curry cross dressing...?"

Ellie hit Jared along the back of the head, nearly knocking his Mario cap off his head. "Am I dressed like f*ckin' Tim Curry? No, I'm dressed like motha' f*ckin' Meatloaf!"

"God damn it, I wish you'd warn me when yer gonna do that!" the blonde complained before readjusting his hat.

"None of that, come on, Chicos! Let's go paint the town red!" With a gesture of his hand, the soccer player began to make his way down the stairs.

"Well, as they say... Hot Patootie!" With a grin, she followed her friends down the stairs. Maybe, just maybe one night off wasn't going to kill her.
