Ainsley had finally decided to get back on track with her new Word of the day calendar, sitting down to carefully open the box it was in. It had quite a bit of packaging for a little paper stack, missing the obvious reason that it was there to make sure the calendar didn't get distorted or fall apart. She was happy to finally be on track, but to fully do that the child had to find the date in the calendar which meant she had to figure out what day it was! She knew it was August, but with the summer days keeping her busy she seemed to forget just what day it was and just what the date was.
She made a small huff, and then stood back up so she could run down the hall to search for the current date. The calendar she found in the kitchen was no use, and when she looked for her sister it seemed she had stepped out for some errands. Whatever could she do? The child thought carefully on it, blissfully forgetting the fact she had a laptop somewhere up in her room. Instead she decided to slip her shoes back on and run outside, looking to see if she could find one of the neighbours. It was her luck that she found one of the elder women on the pouch a few houses down, and even more fortunate that she not only knew what the date was but had a story to tell Ainsley about her summers as a child.
The stories were interesting, and Ainsley had practically eaten them up as if they were some sort of nutrient. The child was engulfed in the story and had almost forgotten all about her calendar when the elder woman asked her what she had wanted to know the date for. The calendar suddenly came back into the child's focus and she gave her thanks to the elder woman with a curtsy.
"Thank you for your help, and thank you for your story but I must return home. Please excuse me!"
With that, the child had hurried back to her home, slipping off her shoes after she shut the door and then making her way back up to her room where the Word of the Day calendar had waited for her. To see it where she had left it brought a smile to her face, and she made her way over to it, taking up a seat beside it.
"It's August 18th," she reminded herself, flipping through the book until she found that particular page. She made sure to double check it was the right date, and then she peeled the calendar apart until it was in two halves. The half that consisted of the days that had already passed she put back into the packing for later use and then tucked it back into the box; the half that started with the current date was left in front of her for her to stare at. "Day 230," she smiled as the first thing she noticed was the small text at the bottom of the page.
The word was fraudulent, a word the child had never seen before. She was careful as her eyes looked over the letters, trying to remember the order carefully. She tried to make it easier, taking the word a part into sections: fraud • u • lent. The fraud you lent to someone? Would that work? It certainly didn't work as a sentence and the child giggled to herself as if she had her own secret joke before she looked down at the definition.
"Involving lying and deceit as actions or methods for gain," she read out loud.
That didn't help, so the child looked below it at the sentence example.
"He went to jail because of the fraudulent scheme he concocted," she read, stumbling over the word concocted.
This wouldn't work! The child would need to get her dictionary out to look up several of the words to get a better idea. The dictionary wasn't far away, easily accessible so she could make a speedy return back to the calendar. She looked up deceit first, and then she looked up concocted before she thought of the sentence again. There was certainly someone she thought who fit the sentence and his name was Endymion. Endymion was a fraudulent man who pretended to be a prince and hurt a princess for some kind of gain that the child could only speculate involved dragons.
What a perfect word.

It was Day 231 and Ainsley was determined to have more success with today's word than she had yesterday's. Normally she would go get dressed, brush her hair, eat breakfast, and brush her teeth before she did anything else but the excitement of getting back into the groove of things had blown her mind of any such tasks. She'd practically jumped out of her bed, and hurried over to the Word of the Day calendar before she did anything else.
The child sat down at the table under her bunk bed where she'd left her calender, giving a small yawn despite the fact she was excited to see what today's word was. She made a move to grab the calendar off the table with one hand while the backhand of her other rubbed at the corner of her eyes. Now was not the time for sleep dust. it was time for words from a calendar. She had yet to remove yesterday's page from the top of the calendar and promptly discovering this she pulled it off carefully so she could save the sheet in a folder.
"Day 231," she reaffirmed while she looked at the bottom of the new page. The word of the day looked a lot like cuddle, but instead of the u vowel there was an o. The child wondered how different the two words were from just the one letter and immediately began to try and sound it out. Cod like the fish and the rest like cuddle seemed to work as a good start for the child. However, the definition wasn't anything like a fish and was actually quite similar to cuddle.
"To treat tenderly," she read out loud, tilting her head up to the bottom of her bed, imagining Cora sleeping uptop. She certainly wanted to coddle her, and cuddle her. Could she do both at the same time, or could she only do one? It was a debate in the child's head, although the winner would be a good result either way. At least until she continued to read the definition of the word coddle. She gasped when she did, just a little. She certainly didn't want to cook Cora in water, regardless of it being below the boiling point!
She made a small huff, setting the calendar back down on the table and standing up. She was going to go give a little coddle of the good kind to Cora, and maybe a little cuddle too.

Ainsley was busy coddling Octavian Oswald as she tactfully made her way up the steps, one by one, until she reached the very top. She had succeeded in climbing to the top of Machu Picchu, and to celebrate she turned around on her heels and overlooked the mountain range, trying not to look down. Oh boy, it was a long way down! She was careful not to slip on the floor in her stockings as she made her way with haste toward her room. Oh, what treasures would the cave in the mountain give her? What secrets would it hold? She lingered
The room was dimly lit, curtains drawn, giving it a mysterious feeling. With the mysterious feeling, a chill of excitement ran down the child's spine as she continued to coddle Octavian Oswald in her arms. It was really a shame she didn't have a little Adventurer's Hat for him to wear as they made their way further inside, the child's foot hitting the corner of the door as she walked in. Suddenly, the exit to the cave was blocked and the adventurer's trapped inside! The child spun around on her heels with a squeal.
"Oh no!" She announced. There was no turning back now and the adventurers knew they had no choice but to continue on and find what they had come in search for: treasure! Where would treasure hide though? The two adventurers consulted on this, thinking carefully as they walked around the cave.
"Hm..." she thought out loud, fingers tracing what seemed to be the curtains on her bed, or otherwise the cave wall. It seemed like it could be moved to reveal some sort of secret cavern! Insistent that there was something behind the wall, the child moved her hands all over it until she found a gap between the curtains and the wall swung open with the wide movement of her arms! There was a secret cavern, a small nook! There was a table like stone inside with several smaller ones beside it. Was it some sort of ancient dining table? The child examined it, finding what seemed to be a calendar on it. She'd found her treasure! It was last used on Day 232, but how many years ago? How curious. She wondered what sort of stories it told, this very spot. What exactly had they used this room for, and why had it been hidden away? Was this calender very precious? The child thought it must be to be kept hidden away where normal eyes could never find it. Her hands carefully ran over the surface, clearing what the child imagined was dust over it, revealing more to the calendar. There were words! Well, mostly just one word, but the word was defined with more words!
"Nullify," she pronounced slowly before moving down onto the definition.
It seemed simple enough to the child, and so she decided she would see what was on the next page behind it! However, the world cave did not agree with that, soon disappearing in her very eyes to reveal her room again. Her sister's voice had been used as the cave's trunk card. It had rung through the walls of the cave and been used to nullify her world until she was back in reality, putting the calendar back down to scurry downstairs to see what was happening in reality with her sister.

Ainsley was staring at the calendar, her fingers clicking on the edge of the table in a rhythmic pattern that could almost be described as a melody. It was a familiar melody for anyone that had gotten one, two, three, ten snow globes during the holidays last year. It was a calming beat, and the child was wishing her snow globe was still here and in one piece. With each click, slowly the child began to hum a high pitch of the melody as well as she reached over and lifted the calendar off the table and took it into her hands.
Her thoughts seemed to be on December today, and with it came a lot of different feelings. These feelings were so mixed, but one thing that seemed to stand out to the child was in the freezer in the kitchen downstairs. She would go share today with Gwenliana, a thought that brought a bit of a jump in her step as she scurried her way out of her room, leap down the stairs and maneuvered to the kitchen.
"Gwenliana," she whispered once she'd entered the kitchen, holding the chunk of paper in her hands as she stepped further into the kitchen. She slowly made her way toward to the fridge, and more specifically the freezer that sat traditionally up top of it.
She hesitated before getting to the fridge, pausing in her step to look around the kitchen. It took a moment but she'd spotted the solution to her problem next to the table. It was one of the kitchen chairs and after setting the calendar on the top of the chair, she began to attempt to lift it over to the fridge. It was a bit too heavy for her though and after lifting it away from the table she gave up on lifting it all the way there and instead she began to pull it over to the fridge.
She had succeeded, and with a small smile the child picked up the calendar, climbed up onto the chair and opened the freezer door.
"Hello!" She announced to the small cell of cold space that was otherwise known as a freezer.
"Look what I brought," she mentioned, holding up the calendar to the freezer. "This is my Word of the Day calendar, it teaches me words! I thought that you might like to learn this word with me!" The child seemed to be talking to absolutely nothing but the cold air the freezer was producing, but perhaps the child seen something that other people couldn't? She seemed to, smiling and reacting as if a person were talking to her. She even laughed a few times as if someone had said something funny.
"Brrr, it's nippy in here! It's almost like Christmas," she whispered softly, looking at the word on the calendar. The word was a little difficult, but the definition seemed simple itself. She pointed to the calendar, as if she were instructing someone, and then said, "Eks-kuhl-payt," as she tried to sound it out. "Exculpate? Exculpate!"
There was a pause as if Ainsley was waiting for someone to reply.
"Oh, yes! Just like that!" She exclaimed excitedly.
The child began to rub her arms with her free hand, attempting to warm herself from the cold air that was coming out of the freezer. It was getting pretty cold standing in front of the freezer now, her arms and her face getting kissed by Winter's Touch. It wasn't unbearable, but it was certainly starting to get cold on her soft skin. She could barely wait for December to roll around and snow to begin to fall again like the day she'd met Gwenliana.
"It'll be December again in a couple months," she said with a smile, leaning against the cold surface of the freezer as her thoughts drifted forward to a day when Gwenliana wouldn't be trapped in the frozen cage in her house.
