Legacy
Aseara watched her three children from across the dancing flames. They’d waited until the sun had dipped behind the horizon and started a bon fire and huddled together around it as a family. Nuri was next to her, eyes closed and soaking up the warmth of the fire before them. She was cuddled up against him head on his chest since he’d wrapped an arm around her. She’d never felt so more at peace with everything, work was great, family was great, her life was great. Her early days might not have started so well but at least she was doing a lot better for herself now.
Aseara glanced at the red spiked crystals on her shoulder, a reminder of that old life now gone. She could still remember the stab wound to her stomach and then using that same knife to finish off Afsana. Blood for blood. Aseara lightly stroked the spot on her abdomen where the evidence of her attack lay hidden; it was only a pale scar now and one only Nuri was privy too. Even her children did not know of that night and she always avoided the question when asked.
Her children were doing so well she didn’t want to bother them with her dark past. She wondered if one of them would ever take over the Red. Perhaps Nasuri when she was older, she didn’t think the boys were interested in such a venture. Then again, neither did Nasuri. Aseara sighed softly; she was just going to have to make more children! Surely one of them would want to take over the Red for her. The thought made her chuckle, maybe she’d even give it to Itotia and Itotia would give it to her children. If the Yaeli decided to stay and have children that is.
It was always nice to look at her children and the Red and see her legacy, that’s what most famous people in history wanted right? They wanted to leave their mark on the world, to see their name continued on long after they had passed away. Aseara didn’t search for fame, but she liked the thought that perhaps she’d left her mark on the world, as small as it was. She knew her children would do well in the world; she would make sure of it. The red did well because it too was her child and she would see it live on.
Aseara cuddled up against Nuri even tighter, closing her eyes and letting the flames warm her from the cold night air. It was rare that she thought about her parents, she’d thought about them when she’d first had children but she hadn’t given them a thought since then. She wondered if they were proud of her, if they would have lived with her in Oba or have stayed in Sauti with the other Windlings. It would have been nice to know… Aseara was past that though; she no longer harbored hateful feelings in their regards.
Nuri shifted and Aseara opened up her eyes again, the triplets had fallen asleep huddle together bundled in blankets. Aseara chuckled softly before shifting herself and yawning. It was getting late, they ought to have been in bed a while ago.
“I’ll take care of the kids, mind getting the fire?” Without waiting, Aseara went over to Nasuri and picked her up first, she was so heavy now but Aseara managed to get her in her arms without waking her up. She carried her back into their home and back in bed to tuck her in. Aseara gave her a kiss on the forehead and smiled.
