Preparing a Meal

The meat from the various seriffin that they had gathered on the hunt had been butchered out, divided up between the hunters and those that needed it, and now that the hunt was over and done with Jacinthus felt as though it was a good a time as any for him to take a bit of a break. It was a long day filled with a lot in the way of work but it had been a day that was well worth it because he knew that some of the oldest and youngest members of the village that were unable to hunt for themselves would eat tonight. On top of that he knew that the hunters that he'd worked with, while still young, were dedicated. So long as they stayed on top of their training and continued to do as he'd shown them that the village would be cared for. Were he to actually take the vacation with his family that he'd been thinking about things would be alright here. Those who were in need of help in getting their hands on fresh meet were now well known to the young hunters, meaning that they would be able to take care of them in Jacinthus's stead. It was actually quite a relief.

Jacinthus knew full well what drove him to do what he did, it was the fact that growing up he and his sister hadn't had anyone to help them out. They had lost their parents, had been forced to grow up fast, and had to fend for themselves for the most part. He had worked hard so that he could hunt down food for himself and Keilana. To start with the two of them had used rocks and sticks to take down prey, eating this that normally didn't look or taste pretty like giant insects from Jauhar. With time the two of them had been able to get their hands on weapons. Jacinthus got his bow and arrow, Keilana got a hammer, and with those weapons they were able to better take care of themselves. He was happy with just being able to do that but at the same time he'd always wanted to do... more.

Hunting for others was such a thing. He had gotten far more fulfillment over being able to bring food to those that needed it then he had from any of the battles that he'd fought in. He knew that the battles had been the sort that needed to happen, that they needed to deal with the dangerous invaders of various sorts, but that didn't mean it was easy. Everyone bore the scars both outside and in from the battles they fought in, Jacinthus included, which was one of the reasons why he was so eager to go on his vacation with his family. To get out of Tale for a reason that wasn't a war was something that he was very much looking forward to.

Reaching his home Jacinthus went to the fire pit that sat at the base of the tree that held his home. He glanced up toward it for a moment, wondering if Takoda and Korra were home yet. He would climb up and check soon, once he had dinner started. Giving a smile he picked up his metal spit, driving it through the chunks of meat that he'd brought back before he put it over the pit. Once everything was set, and he'd cleaned off his hands, he set to work starting the fire. He kept it low so that it wouldn't risk burning the meat, instead wanting it to cook slowly and evenly on the spit. With everything set up Jacinthus gave a smile, pushing up to his feet, and brushed his hands off on his pants, "Wonderful." Now that the meat was started there would be dinner for Korra and himself, he would need to see about getting something for Takoda started as well. His sweet mate wasn't a fan of meat, something that had always thrown Jacinthus for a loop as a hunter, but he knew where he could fetch something that he'd enjoy as well.

Making his way up the ladder and into his tree top home Jacin looked around, finding the place to be empty at the moment. Takoda might be out giving magic lessons, Korra might be out exploring, drawing her maps, and hopefully not getting lost. It meant that he had time to fetch food for Takoda so that he wouldn't feel left out as Korra and Jacin enjoyed the seriffin meat that was currently cooking down below. He'd just have to gather a few things so that he could trade with a lady that he knew would have extra of the things that Takoda would prefer to eat. Once everything was gathered he headed back down the ladder once more and over to the fire, turning the spit a bit so that the other side of the meat would get some time on the fire before hurrying on his way.

So long as his run to the older lady's house was a quick one he didn't have to worry about one part of the meal getting over cooked he thought to himself. The last thing he wanted was for half the seriffin meat that he'd worked so hard to hunt and prepare to be inedible when he meant to share the bounty with his daughter. Much to his delight the woman he was looking for was outside of her home, working on teaching her grand daughters to weave baskets. He'd traded with her before for said baskets in the past, back when Aysun and Chandra were tiny little things, to help his sister out as far as beds for her younglings went. It wasn't the first time he'd traded with her, it likely wouldn't be the last.

After a small chat with her and the little ones he was headed back with a small basket filled with various fruits, vegetables, and herbs in hand. What was in the basket should suffice as a good meal for his mate and the woman had gotten some dried meat out of the deal, something she'd shared with the girls. It meant he'd need to replenish his stores of dried goods, but it would be well worth it since now he had fresh food for his mate. It would last more then just tonight's meal as well, something that put a happy smile one Jacin's face as he made his way back home once more.

Before the Hunt

Jacinthus was sitting in front of his house, relaxing, while working on starting up a fresh fire, to get it going so that he would be able to start breakfast for himself and his family. He wanted everything to be prepared for them so that, when they got up, that they could eat at their leisure while he was out hunting. He was planning on going out again today, to look for something new for those that he wanted to share food with. He was thinking that maybe he'd go after aldabuk today because they were quite delicious and, due to the the fact that they had four legs, that there would be even more meat to be had then what was on a seriffin. They would be quite delicious he thought to himself with a bit of a smile, not to mention that there would be enough on them to make plenty of dried meat to add to the stocks since he'd recently traded some of it away to get food that Takoda liked. It was worth it, but then again when it came to Takoda anything was worth it if it made him happy.

The fire was just crackling to light when he heard approaching footsteps. They were light, those of a younger person, likely female, he turned, "Korra, you don't have to be up yet it's..." He trailed off as he found himself starring not at his daughter but instead at one of his students. Well, not one of his, but instead the one that had decided not to go on the seriffin hunt. He starred at the young man for a long, drawn out moment, before he pushed himself up to his feet, "What is it that you want?" He asked of him, wondering what had brought him back here when he'd run away from the hunt that Jacinthus was going to bring him on. The fact that he had run away... it irked him. He knew he shouldn't get mad at him, just because he was different from Jacinthus, but it was one of those things he couldn't completely stamp out.

The young man couldn't hold Jacinthus's gaze, instead starring at his feet, toeing his barefoot against the ground, "I... umm... want another... chance." He said, seemingly struggling with the words that didn't seem to want to come out. It was something that had him Jacinthus giving a bit of a sigh.

"Another chance? You had a chance to go with us on the hunt for the seriffin, you could have helped us to gather the birds, could have helped us to get more of them." He said, wondering why the boy was back now when he'd run away yesterday? Asking for another chance it was a potentially good sign, but the idea that the boy might go running off a second time. Was that something he wanted to bother with? He should be getting breakfast under way after all, should be making sure that food was ready so that he could head out early for his aldabuk hunt. Yes... the hunt, did he want to bring him along? To give him the chance that he wanted? He tapped a foot against the ground, a thoughtful look on his face, before he said, "I will be going after aldabuk this morning, if you are interested as well as certain you won't run off again."

The boy's head jerked up, his eyes going a bit wide in surprise, "Aldabuk? Yes... I want to go... I... wanted to go after the seriffin too... but I was scared. There are scary things out there, scary people... I know I need to learn to use a weapon, but it's intimidating." He said, lifting his hands to clutch at the bow that he had slung over his shoulder. The idea of hunting wasn't one that came easily Jacinthus thought to himself.

Turning to the fire he set to work feeding some wood into it, before he moved to fetch the meat that he was wanted to get cooked up. It was going to be for Korra and himself, the rest, some fruit that tasted good when cooked over a flame, would be for his mate. Once the food was all speared and over the fire he turned back to the boy, "Do you have a name?" He asked of him, feeling that he should get to know the student since he was bringing him along on a hunt. He understood that he was hurt by the cowardice he'd shown, that he was afraid of the world at large, but that didn't mean that Jacin would take it easy.

The boy was starring at the fire, still unable to face the one that would be his teacher, and he said simply and quietly, "My name is Vhaile, Mister Jacinthus."

Jacinthus starred for a moment, blinking slowly, his ears giving a twitch, before he said, "I don't think that the whole 'mister' thing isn't required, just Jacinthus, please." The idea that he might be called 'mister' didn't sit well with him because it made him feel a little old. He wasn't that old. Sure, he was older, but not so old that he needed to be called mister by his students! He'd save that for when he got gray in his hair and had become one of the elders that lead Yera. Only then would he allow himself to be called 'mister' by anyone he thought to himself.

"Once this is done we will be going out, I am not sure how long it will take. It's possible that we will be out all day. As such I want you to go home, let your family know that we are going out, and to look forward to the meat from an aldabuk." He felt that giving the boy a bit of encouragement, as well as something to look forward to, would put him in a good mood. It would also give Jacinthus time to get ready himself, as well as say good morning to his mate. He wanted him to know where they were heading, as well as what they were doing, after all. He didn't want his mate or his daughter to worry after him by just disappearing onto a hunt.

Lifting a hand Jacinthus waved the boy off, letting Vhaile rush away to get ready for the hunt. He watched him go, giving a little shake of his head before he pushed to his feet and headed for the ladder up into his tree top home.

Tournament Woes

It came to Jacinthus's attention that there was another to be held, something that had, for a moment at least captured the attention of the Leaf Tribesman. Turning to Vhaile he reached out to take the paper that he was holding out to him, giving it a once over, his eyes scanning as the young hunter in training bounced on his feet alongside of him. Another battle tournament? It had been years since there had been one of those, though he supposed that it was hard to hold a friendly competition when everyone was at each others throats, huh? Now that things seemed to be calm, or at least the time being, it would appear as though someone wanted to try to throw another tournament like the one that had been held what felt like forever ago.

"Is it true that you won the last tournament? Will you be entering this one? Will you try to win again?" The boy was asking him, his voice quite interested... and loud, drawing the attention of the other young hunters that he'd been working with. Now it would appear as though every last one of them were watching him, waiting for is answers to the questions that Vhaile had posed to their teacher. It was something that caused Jacinthus to glance at the young man who was closest to him first, toward the others, and then his eyes dropped to the paper again once more. He read it over again, as though the information that was written upon it might have magically change. No luck though he thought to himself before he gave a sighing sound, as well as a shake of his head in the negative. After reading the details written on the paper twice over his interest, which had actually been pretty great, cooled quicker then if he'd dunked his head in a pool of water Takoda had cooled with his magic.

"I did win the last one... but I won't be going to this one. Didn't you read where it's going to be held? I'll be damned if I go to Oba." He said, handing the paper back to a rather disappointed looking Vhaile. He actually felt a bit bad to disappoint the boy that much but there was nothing that he could do. Were the tournament to be held anywhere else then he'd of been the first person in line looking to sign up, the fact that it was within Oba, a place he vowed never to go, his interest had instantly waned. He knew that it was likely bad of him, making him seem like an unfriendly sort, but it no matter. He had zero interest in going, even if it meant missing a tournament, something which he'd enjoyed to the fullest last time. The last battle especially had been quite exhilarating.

A shame that the second tournament was ruined by its location he thought to himself idly before he looked around at those who were gathered around him. He supposed that there were many who wanted to move on, leaving the wars of the past in the past, wanting to make friends with the Obans. He'd leave it to those who were more willing to open themselves up to such things but Jacinthus was far too set in his ways. He couldn't trust them, not after everything that they had done. Especially that pair of bastards that had lured Chalcedony and Jacinthus away from their families, making them believe that they had taken Aysun and Chandra, in an attempt to kill the two of them. They'd shown their true colors that day and again with each move they'd made after that. While there were those who would trust them, those who would go to the tournament, he wouldn't be one of those people. He didn't think that it was possible that they weren't plotting something. What if the entire tournament was just a trick to lure them in so that the Fire Tribe could take another shot at capturing and killing the other tribes?

It might not be that way though he told himself... and deep down he knew that maybe, just maybe, the were legitimately throwing a tournament in an attempt to make friendly with those that they had attack so many years ago. It could be true but even if it was Jacinthus wouldn't go, he couldn't go, and he couldn't forgive. It was best that he stayed in Yera for now, at least until he and his family were ready for the vacation that he wanted them all to go on.

After another long moment of silence he stretched out his arms out to his sides before he crossed them over his chest, giving his students a once over, before he said, "Just because I am not going means nothing, you needn't all look so disappointed. Instead how about we get back to work? Tournaments are all well and good but there are still those that need to stay behind and take care of things. We can't let Yera fall apart just because a bunch of people are rushing off to play around." Something that made him sound like quite the old man, but at the moment that didn't really matter to him. What mattered was getting their minds off the fact that Jacinthus had refused to go to the tournament and onto something, anything, else.

Vhaile glanced around and was the first one to nod his head, "Yeah! You're right! I'm sure that even if you went we wouldn't have been able to follow you to watch. Our parents likely would have kept us home so that we could continue with our training." It wasn't as though the entire class of them could head off to the tournament just because Jacinthus was going after all. So while it was a shame they wouldn't get to see him battling others they could just watch him as he hunted instead.

One of the girls gave a bit of a laugh, hands on her hips as she said, "Speak for yourself, Vhaile, but I will go going with my father." Words that caused the lot of them to start walking, all of them eager to weigh in on who was going, who wasn't going, who wanted to go, and various other chatter. It was something that caused Jacinthus to smile just a bit. It seemed as though their minds had moved on, something he was grateful for. Were he not the one in charge he might even have thanked Vhaile for helping him out in such a manner.

Instead he merely gave the young man a nod before he said, "I will give the lot of you a break, leave you to your talk about the tournament, while I decide upon what we are doing next. Prepare yourselves, I am not going to make the next test an easy one." Something that had a few of them groaning as he walked off, deep in thought now on what he'd be testing the lot of them with next. There were all manner of fun things that he could have them do, from hunting specific creatures, testing how good they were at various tasks like plucking, skinning, or butchering meat. The number of tests he had for them were endless, so all he had to do was figure out exactly what it was that he wanted the to do. It should be fun, not to mention that it should also help him to get his mind off the tournament and off of the Obans. They weren't a huge problem in Yera, only a few of them visiting the place at a time, so he shouldn't have to worry. If they were to start anything they would have plenty of warning time before they got as far as Yera. At least he really hoped that were the case.

No, no... what he hoped for was that the tournament was legit, that they weren't plotting, and that he would hear only good things after it was all over. He was sure after she got back that his female student was sure to tell everyone how it had gone in detail. Something he supposed that he would look forward to since it would mean that all had gone well. Until then he refused to worry and instead felt that it was best that he distracted himself and all of his students that weren't going instead. Not as though Jacinthus didn't have plenty to busy himself with between is family, the village, his students, and his hunts. It would be easy to pass the time between when the tournament started and when it ended.

Speaking of his family he really should check in on Takoda, see how he was doing, and see if he was working with his own students today. Was he perhaps even working with Chandra? His nephew seemed to be working hard when it came to his magic and it was something that Jacinthus had always been pleased to see. He got his hard working side from Keilana's side of the family after all, or so Jacinthus believed. Mostly because he refused to think kindly on Chalcedony or anything about him on principle. Yet another thing that Jacinthus was very stubborn about, not wanting to give an inch to Chalcedony just as he didn't want to give an inch to the Obans. Not that he wanted to compare the two or consider which he preferred.

Heading up the ladder and into the tree top home that he shared with his mate and daughter he looked around for a moment, eyes scanning the area before he called out, "Takoda? Are you home?" He gave the place a once over, but found that he didn't see him anywhere. So he must be out training then? Preparing more magic wielders for the future, a lot of which Jacin hoped for the sake of Yera's continued prosperity were healers. The more of those a village had the better because that meant that many more people that could aid in keeping the villagers safe and healthy.

After a moment of waiting, knowing that Takoda wouldn't be just magically appearing, he started toward the ladder that would take him down to the ground again. It was on his way back there that he spotted something, an envelope with his name on it, written in Takoda's hand writing. He blinked a couple times, then reached out for the note, "Wonder if he's going to be late getting home tonight?" He mused to himself as he opened up the letter that he'd found. Jacinthus read it over once, twice, and then a third time just to be certain... before clutching it in his hand, crushing the paper, a look of shock and displeasure on his face.

The letter's contents were surprising for certain. It seemed that unlike Jacinthus who was staunchly against going to Oba for any reason at all, tournaments included, Takoda didn't feel the same. In fact the letter said that Takoda was actually going there, to fight in said tournament, and he was... less then pleased. Never before had he wanted to find him, to scold him, and to actually... deny him something. He didn't want Takoda going to Oba, much preferring the idea of him staying here with him where he was safe. That was what he wanted, but apparently not what Takoda wanted.

It was something that his mate had of have known, why else would he leave a letter behind instead of just telling Jacin to his face that he was going? He must have known that Jacinthus would disapprove of him going to such a place to be around so many Obans. His mate knew, but he went anyway, leaving only the note behind to let Jacin know. It was something that put caused Jacin's mood to sour a bit as he tossed it aside, his temper rising a bit, before he headed down the ladder. He found himself filled with a lot of unwanted, burning energy, and he was going to have to run it off.

Heading back to gather his students with him it wasn't long before all of them were running laps around the village. He'd said that it was stamina training, which it could be, but for at least Jacin it was a means to an end on top of training for his students. Better that his temper was brought back into check before he saw Takoda again and he really didn't want to have a real, knock down, drag out sort of argument with him... though he did mean to make his feelings on what Takoda had done known to his mate. Though he was sure that Takoda probably already knew.
