“Will one day…will one day my hair be as long as mama’s?”

The eldest of Jakkoa’s two younger sisters, Alise, sat before him with her legs folded beneath her. Her sunny blonde hair reached only just past her shoulder blades, but that was thanks mostly to her lifestyle: running, climbing, jumping, wrestling, or otherwise tangling herself in any ‘exciting’ thing she could get into. The grime and snags, bumps and slip ups that came with it had necessitated a haircut on more than one occasion, her adventures leaving her parents sometimes only to wonder at what it was, exactly, that had gotten into her hair.

Jakkoa ran a brush through it, patiently working through the kinks. “One day,” he said. “If you learn to behave yourself like a proper young lady.”

“I have been good!” Alise squirmed to face him, stilling only at his, ‘Ah, ah!’ and tap of the brush to her shoulder. “I’ve not gotten anything in it for…” She began counting on her fingers. “A long time!”

“You got it mussed this morning,” Jak said.

“Only a little. But Papa said—”

A tap, tap, tap to the wagon’s floorboards drew his attention, and his stepmother waited there at the back, a simpering Jorah — Jakkoa’s littlest brother — in tow. “Alise, darling, be a girl and take your brother. What are you still doing back here? And Jak.” Palvari rounded her focus on him. “Out to the front with you! Tammok is waiting,” she scolded. “He needs to set out, but there are hours of light left to make a sale in, and we must be rid of those necklaces, you know the ones? They beg a thief on the road, and better they be off our hands before we make for Tinerr again.” After the briefest pause, she made a shooing motion with her hand. “Come, what are you waiting for, boy? Out with you!”

And so, setting the brush in his hand aside with a huff, Jak opened his mouth, but then thought better of it and moved to slip out the back of their travelling wagon. His father, Tammok, had set up a small shop table in town, trying to sell off the bulk of their valuables before they headed out of Tale. Keeping too many on hand at once was dangerous, since raids on merchants between settlements were not uncommon, and carrying jewelry in bulk tempted fate.

Sitting and manning a stall, though, was a mixed bag for Jakkoa. During busy hours, he didn’t mind. It allowed him to talk, make new acquaintances, and engage the locals. At quieter times, however, as it was now, he grew restless easily, and antsy.

This was one of those instances, and he settled himself in for a mind-numbing wait.

The Only Black Uke

Jacinthus was on the way toward the marketplace, wanting to see about finding something new for his daughter and his mate. Things had been going well as far as preparations had gone, putting him in a rather good mood, and with Jacinthus's good moods came the desire to make his family just as happy. He wanted to get them something nice, though he wasn't quite sure what he wanted to get them quite yet. He knew what they liked, what they enjoyed, but finding such things could be tricky at times. Especially when it came to his mate, finding him a book on healing and herbs that he didn't already had, it could be quite a challenge. The only thing he could think of was finding him books from far off lands, perhaps a book from the toxic continent? It was as far off and interesting as he could come up with, but how likely was it for a book from that place to end up here?

Still, he supposed that he could at least put out some feelers, let the merchants know what he was looking for. As for Korra, she might be easier to find something for. Either something pretty, and jingly, for her to wear, that made her easier to find when she got lost, or some supplies so she could work on those maps that she was so interested in. He rather enjoyed spoiling the pair of him, something that caused him to smile a little bit, as he walked into the area where the merchants tended to gather. He looked around for a moment before starting forward. Time to see what he could find to spoil his favorite two people with!

Jakkoa’s gaze skimmed out, over the thinning crowd, one to the next—and then paused, though he couldn’t have said why, precisely. The man didn’t immediately stick out: pure blooded Tale native, from the look of him; tall enough, but not wildly so; fit; lean. Attractive, Jak decided, in his own way, though he personally preferred those of his own race of a fairer overall complexion. Perhaps it was the long, long stretch of deep, mahogany brown hair that stood him out from the rest. Regardless, he held Jak’s attention enough to make him seem a natural target for an attempted sale.

So, he smiled and leaned.

“You, sir, look to be a man with an eye for high quality goods if I’ve ever seen one. What do you think is the worst line you’ve ever been fed to catch your attention for a sale?”

Jacinthus turned toward the friendly voice that had called out to him, posing a strange question to him after inviting him him over saying that he had an 'eye for high quality goods'. Jacin came to stand before him then said in an honest manner, "I might have to say that the line you just fed me might be the worst, but it did at least catch my attention it was supposed to do." The young blond had gotten Jacin's attention so he might as well check out what he had to sell, right? He'd put the extra effort after all.

"Since you put in the effort I can see what it is that you have for sale." No reason no to, he was here and chatting with the young salesman after all. The only thing he had worries over was him not being a bit green when it came to being a merchant, but surely he wasn't alone? No reason to worry too much when surely such a stall couldn't be led by just one prentice aged young man. As such he found himself scanning what the other had for sale, wondering if there was anything here that might be a good gift for Korra.

“If it is the single worst you’ve ever heard, that feels like a sort of accomplishment to me,” Jak said, taking the tease with a smile and tipping his head so that several loose strands of blonde slipped free over one shoulder. “To keep a man’s attention once earned, though, and have him pleased about it, it helps to know what he wants. Is there anything in particular that brings you to market today? A gift for a very lucky woman?” Glancing over the man and determining from the looks of him that it was at least possible he’d fathered children of his own, Jak added, “Or a little one? I have a pristine stock of hand-carved and painted ornamental bracelets, from the finest crafters in Zena…”

He moved as he said it, unlatching and opening a carved wooden box, laden with an assortment of arranged jewelry.

“And a collection here…” Jak reached for another box, decorated with coiling metallic engravings, “…some pieces of which have traveled from as far as Oba, strung together and shaped in the gold desert itself.”

The Only Black Uke

Definitely a salesman Jacinthus thought to himself. He sure had the pitch down pat, as though he practiced it in his free time, and he was good at it. It really made Jacinthus want to buy something from him, though he wasn't sure what it was that he'd be buying quite yet. As he got to the part about what brought Jacinthus here, asking if he was buying a gift for a 'very lucky woman' he couldn't help but to chuckle. The merchant hadn't been in Yera long, that much was for certain, since there were few that didn't know Jacinthus and his family in Yera. Giving a smile he said, "I am looking for gifts for a pair of very important people, yes. My mate and my daughter, both of which deserve only the best."

He made menton of 'hand carved and pained ornamental bracelets' and he gave a slow, thoughtful nod, "Hmm, maybe... I know this might sound a little odd but if you have any jewelry, be it necklaces, bracelets or the like that... well, jingle? Bells or other chiming things. I'd like something pretty like that for my daughter." He wouldn't explain why, not wanting to embarrass Korra over her lack of directional skill.

Jacinthus gave a slight twitch as he mentioned that he had pieces that had travelled from as far as Oba. It was on the tip of his tongue to say that he wanted nothing that came from Oba but he held his tongue, instead asking, "Since you said 'as far as Oba' it's safe to assume that you don't have anything from Yael? I am looking for herbalogy books from the poisoned island if you have anything like that or know where such a thing could be found?" Might as well ask.

Few things gave more information about a person than the person themself, often unintentionally or indirectly through a combination not just of what they said, but what they didn’t say, the way they held themself, body language, expression, and tone. Jak was far from perfect, but reading into such factors in addition to mere dialogue was an instinct that came fairly naturally to him to begin with, and one that he specifically worked on honing in his interactions with others. Thus, when the man before him chuckled, and ‘agreed’ with him while specifically excluding Jak’s chosen word of woman and exchanging it for the more neutral term ‘mate’, Jak tipped his head, studied the man one more moment, and then brightened his smile.

“Very lucky husband, then? Family is only ever deserving of the best,” Jak agreed. “And as a matter of fact…”

His teeth flashed briefly, expression taking on a playful lilt, and he reached, moving under the main stall structure to draw out a thin sheet of carved and varnished wood, upon which an assortment of things were hooked. In truth, most of the ‘jewelry’ on it was intended for vanity pets—perzi, in particular. Owners often wanted them belled to ease the process of locating them, and to deter the likelihood of them bringing home unwanted ‘gifts’ in the case of those keeping them around purely for entertainment, as opposed to pest control. But the man didn’t need to know that. Many of them were still very lovely, and if he wanted a belled bracelet for a young girl, what better?

“The circlets of these are hand-woven and cured to be soft, but durable, the metal of the bell stain-proof, so it won’t become garish with age. And these here…” He gestured to the lower rung of them, “…have the bells fastened to fine chains, lightweight, adjustable, and flattering for a small wrist. Is she a runner? One of my little sisters seems to live for getting into everything under the sun. If she is anything like that, you’ll be wanting something that can weather her energy.”

As with the first instance of it, the man’s tense — if silent — reaction to the Oban products was enough to give Jak pause, and decide to silently close up that portion of the selection and set it away, out of sight. Poor advertising to keep in view anything that a customer overtly objected to. Instead, Jakkoa focused on the latter part of the man’s inquiry.

“We’ve not traveled so far out as that, unfortunately,” he said. “Those things from outside of Tale, Sauti, and Zena that are in our stock come traded from outside suppliers when we cross paths…if you are dedicated to the interest, though, I could give you the name of a more distant-reaching merchant train likely to make those parts. Or…if you were truly persistent, I’d invite you to speak with my father about arranging for one specially ordered through us. But it would be expensive, given the distance and circumstances…we do have a selection of books on the art, though. Your partner is a healer?”

The Only Black Uke

Jacinthus gave a smile, unable to think of anything else but the fact that when it came to Takoda that it was Jacinthus who was the lucky one. Not that he would say something so embarrassingly sappy to a stranger. Words like that were to be saved for Takoda himself. He did nod though, "Agreed, they do indeed deserve the best of the best." At least in his mind he wanted to see to it that his family got all the best things, as well as whatever it is that they might need or want. It was what motivated him.

Watching as the young man fetched something from behind the stall. It seemed to be a collection of rather lovely, and jingly, decorations. He listed as the other described what they were, as well as how they were made, and he gave a thoughtful sound, "They do look like something she might like." They also looked as though they would help him to keep better track of the girl. He loved her dearly but she was the absolute master when it came to getting herself lost within the shortest amount of time. If the world wasn't as dangerous as it was Jacinthus would likely be impressed with Korra's skills. At the question he gave a nod, "She is pretty swift, yes. Something that could stand up to her antics would make it that much better." Durable decorations would be the best thing for Korra.

Reaching out he picked out one that looked particularly nice, giving it a little shake. He wanted to find a sound that wouldn't just be loud for the mere sake of being loud. Instead he wanted to find one that sounded nice too. It took him testing a few of them before he found a chiming sound that was agreeable to his ears, causing them to give a little twitch, "This one sounds nice. Looks nice too." He said, setting it aside, deciding that it was definitely something Korra needed.

As the other explained to him where their stock came from Jacinthus couldn't help but smile, "It's alright, I knew the odds were against me. Only recently have things from Yael been turning up... and that stuffs seems to be more from smugglers and fools then legitimate merchants." Like those damn beasts that had escaped from such people. At the question about his partner he nodded, "Yes, a healer, and one who's always been very interested in herbology along with the magical sort of healing arts."

If experience had taught him anything when it came to interacting with customers, knowing when not to over-sell something was certainly a crucial element. Once a customer was already making their choice and coming to a decision, it was unnecessary to keep pushing, for risk of deterring or distracting them. Thus, when the man began looking in earnest at the belled collars, inspecting, listening, and seeming to settle on one, Jakkoa held his tongue, smiling and nodding and letting him take his pick.

After he selected one, Jak was quick to encourage the choice. “Wonderful. It’s beautiful,” he said. “And it ought to last well through whatever she might come up with to put it through. That one is twenty silvers, if you please.”

After, Jak listened as the man spoke of smugglers and trade with Yael, and nodded. “It’s dangerous business,” he said by way of agreement. “There are few legitimate traders willing to risk it, with as little as we know of the island, and…” He tapped a finger idly to the counter, “…assuming that originally, those sent there were good purpose.”

That, added to the issue of the extremists being there now with the resolution of the most recent conflict, and there was not a chance Jakkoa’s own family would be making the trip that far personally. They rarely moved further out than Tale, their current location being the far stretch of their ‘range’, and although he was interested in certain other areas — Oba, in particular — he still considered the rest of the world distinctly dangerous, particularly so the further it was from home territory.

And alkidikes were simply savage, no matter where they were found.

"Here's to hoping that you're right about that." He wondered who would end up winning in that 'battle' either Korra or the the belled accessory. He supposed he'd be the first to know if it broke since she'd tell him. So long as it's life span was long enough he would even replace it were Korra interested in another he thought to himself before he dug into his pocket to get out coin purse, digging out the asked for amount, handing it over before tucking the accessory away. He'd give it to Korra when he saw here next, until then he could keep it with him... unless he went on a hunt then he'd just have to hide it until he could give the present to his daughter. He doubted even a hunter of his skill level could hunt well while jingling.

Giving the merchant a glance Jacinthus said, "I can see why few are willing to head there when the only rumors swirling about the place aren't good one." He said thoughtfully, "Who wants to go to a place that many refer to as a 'toxic island' after all." The only ones that really belonged in such a place were those zealots who had to disrupt the peace and attack those he care about in their foolish rush to find a bunch of brainless birds. A bigger waste of time and life Jacinthus couldn't even think of at the moment.

"Here's to hoping a legitimate trader is able to get goods to and from the place with time." He mused, feeling that he could wait a while to get the book for Takoda, so long as it meant he wasn't paying a bandit or smuggler for such an item. He'd be damned if he handed over his hard earned money to a thief he thought to himself before giving a smile, "What else do you have for sale other then jewelry?" He asked, wondering if he could find something for Takoda even if it wasn't the very specific book he'd been looking for.

“I do like to be right,” Jak said, only half teasing. “But in seriousness, I am sure there will be those brave travelers soon. Adventurous hearts are not given solely to those who harbor foul intentions, after all.”

When asked what else he had, Jak set away the board of belled collars, and moved instead to a different area. “I assume you are still thinking in the line of potential healing products, or useful tools for it?” he asked. “I’ve always found the art fascinating, myself,” he admitted, shuffling through a neat stack of things before selecting three tomes in particular. “But I’ve been told by more than one source that magic is not my gift. Still…” He dusted a hand over one of them before setting it out on the main table, title upright for the other man’s view, and then the same for the other two, “…if anything, it’s only fostered more respect in me for those who can manage it. This,” He gestured to the first, tapping a finger to its upper cover, “is a complex index of specifically the fungal flora of Sauti out to the eastern border of Tale, outlining not only the basics of where they can be found, their seasonal growth and appearance, but medicinal and toxic properties, depending.”

He tapped the next. “This was written as a gardner’s handbook, but has been especially popular among healers for its coverage of a wide range of things which can be grown at home, but useful in practice for the day to day from things as simple as common seasonal afflictions or fevers, to more dangerous illnesses. The last is written by a traveler, and contains an exploration of many lesser known or understood diseases witnessed along the way. Some contain local, prospective cures, while others had no discovered remedy, so far as she knew at the time, but potentially useful nonetheless to recognize and be aware of.”

"I wish them all the luck in the world." Jacinthus said, thinking about the idea of going to Yael for only a split second before brushing it aside. A trip to a toxic island was far from the vacation that Jacinthus was wanting to take with his family. The closest that he wanted to get was Matori since he wanted to bring his family to such a nice place... provided they found a part of it far enough from Oba. While he wanted to make a certain amount of peace with them that didn't mean he wanted his family that close to them as he still didn't quite trust them.

At the question he gave a slow nod of his head, "He's quite amazing when it comes to his magical abilities, as well as nonmagical ones. I was never able to really wrap my mind around magic, it wasn't something that made sense to me or something that I even thought about using. Takoda though, he was able to do amazing things since we were young." Even now he could picture him using those powers of his against a legendary beast in Sauti. It was something amazing that he would never be able to figure out himself, so all he could do was watch Takoda in awe as he used those powers of his to do all manner of interesting things. As the man produce a different book from the one that Jacinthus was interested in he dropped his gaze to look at it, a curious look on his face. So, a book from Sauti? One that sounded pretty interesting, and had him wondering if it was something that Takoda had or not.

It didn't quite sound it. Fungal... flora... hrm, that was... mushrooms? Given things that were located in parts of Tale were included in the book made it more tempting to buy. If he thought that it could be a help to Takoda, even a small one, then he would definitely buy it for him. Lifting his gaze to look at the merchant he listed to him as he described what it started out as and what it had become popular as. He gave a thoughtful sound then nodded, "Could be useful... I wonder if he would want to start a mushroom garden." He mused, feeling that if Takoda were interested in such a thing after reading the book that he'd let Jacin know. After a long, thoughtful moment he nodded, "Alright, I will take it. Anything else you can recommend?"

“Amazing,” Jak said as his customer spoke of his significant other and their apparent magical prowess. Even if he knew little personally on the subject and would potentially never see the man again, it was generally the soundest policy to agree with what they had to say whenever possible, and thus, he smiled. “It does sound as though he is blessed with his talent, and I am sure his patients appreciate the care of someone so gifted…” Then, mind flitting to his own family, he took pause. They could rarely afford a healer, let alone a good one, unless the situation was truly dire, but it never hurt to know of them and where to find them. “He takes patients here?” Jak asked. “Or are you away from home…”

As the topic refocused, and the man agreed to the purchase, Jak blinked, and then brightened.

“Oh, magnificent. As for what else…it would depend, admittedly, on what your partner focuses his craft on, assuming you were thinking in the lines of medicinal material still? What path has he chosen to take with his magic, and is there any particular area you know he’d be interested in learning more of?”

Jacinthus nodded, "Patients will sometimes visit us at our place, sometimes he will go on a journey to meet with them, sometimes he will tend to people in the field. It seems to vary with the situation." He never did care for the times when he was away from home for too long since he didn't want to see his mate at risk. Not as though he could just ask him to stay home though, not that he wanted to. He just wanted to keep him safe was all. He supposed that if the need arose he could always just accompany him on his journeys, that way he would be kept safe and dangers kept.

"He has his magical abilities, but despite being able to treat people in that manner he also seems to have quite the interest in herbs. I guess they are more useful for people who are sick instead of injured? Or maybe it's for people that aren't hurt too badly? I can't really say, all that stuff save for normal first aid to be used while I'm out hunting is a little lost on me." He gave a bit of a laugh and said, "Most of the time if I get hurt I just go to him and beg healing off of him." If only to steal him away for that much more time they could spend alone.

Giving a thoughtful sound he said, "If you know of anything new, some sort of strange new healing methods from any of the far away lands, I'm sure books on that could be interesting for him as well."

“So he’s…in the area currently?” Jak asked, trying not to sound rudely eager. He knew his focus here was to make a profit, but sometimes conversation was part of that, and above and beyond marketing reasons, the subject of healing was beginning to needle it’s way into the back of his mind. Not as something he considered he could do — not properly — but still something he wanted to know of and, whenever possible, make contacts with locals who did have skill in the field.

“Herbs certainly have the benefit of being usable by all and supplementing magic when otherwise drained,” Jak agreed. He knew that his stepmother had some very basic familiarity with herbs, but he’d not yet expanded upon his own skill with them.

Jakkoa tipped his head at the mention of ‘far away’ lands, and considered the request a moment before drawing up a satchel. “How far is ‘far’?” he asked. “None so far as the dark island, but…if Jauhar was of note…”
