Two Choices

Gabriel's head hovered inches above the table, barely keeping from contacting with his coffee. He was well aware he wasn't sleeping enough, and his parents were starting to notice his schedule shifting more and more nocturnally.

He looked at the clock and cringed. It was nearly one PM; his work as an officer of the Negaverse was eating up so much of his nights that he often didn't sleep until the wee hours of the morning and rarely woke up before noon. He'd noticed the significant frustrated glances his parents shared, had become aware that they were often talking when he wasn't around; they were keeping something from him, or planning something.

Several times, they'd approached him, with varying levels of delicacy, about his plans for the future. Every time, he'd explained that he wasn't interested in a traditional education, and that he was concerned about things far beyond that. They didn't seem too impressed, and the discussions had gotten more and more tense as the summer went on and his schedule became stranger and stranger to them.

"Gabriel?" His father's voice came from the entrance to the kitchen.

"Huh?" He wasn't particularly articulate; it took time to wake up, damn it. He took a very long drink of coffee and shook his head a little. "Uh, yes, dad?"

"We need to talk." His father walked in and pulled up a chair at the table next to him.

Uh oh. Nothing beginning with 'we need to talk' ever ended up well.

"Sure, what about?" He asked. This really wasn't fair; he was being ambushed.

"Well, ever since you broke up with Vythica, it seems like you're just...not doing anything at all with your life." His father broached. "I know you haven't applied for college yet."

"Me not applying for college is completely unrelated to me breaking up with Vythica." Gabriel said firmly.

"Well, I can understand if you'd like to take a gap semester," his father said, "but I'd like to see you put in for spring at DCU."

"I'm not going to college." Gabriel said. There was a firmness to his voice. How dare his father accuse him of not doing anything? The man had absolutely no idea. Gabriel risked his life every night to keep the city safe, and his father was concered about whether or not he was going to college?

There were so many bigger things to worry about.

"That's a problem, then, son." His father's expression had shifted to one much less pleasant. "We can't just fund you and fund you if you're going to laze around on the Internet until four in the morning."

"That's not..." Gabriel protested, and then he stopped. He couldn't really explain what he was doing, now could he? That was confidential and potentially dangerous information. "What are you saying?"

"You have one week to decide between three options," his father said. "Either you start applying for colleges, you start applying for jobs, or you find somewhere else to live."

There was only one option, as far as Gabriel was concerned.

"I'll start packing my stuff."

Opportunity Knocks

To some people, the dorky little UFO on the hand-painted sign for the bookstore called The Truth is Out There would seem worrying, especially when coupled with the books on display - Chariots of the Gods, The Custodians: Beyond Abduction, American Conspiracies: Lies, Lies, and More Dirty Lies that the Government Tells Us, Conspiracy Theories: Secrecy and Power in American Culture and similar titles. Most people would call it a fringe bookstore.

Gabriel Blake called it his favorite place to be and new place of work. The owner was a friend, and when Gabriel had explained the situation with his parents, the man had rather kindly offered both a place to stay in the rather nice loft above the store, which he owned but wasn't currently using, and a job to pay the rent and cover a little extra.

Gabriel had protested that he wanted to at least try and find something on his own, but the man would have none of it.

"Us 'crazies' gotta stick together, right?"

Apparently something about being thrown out for not conforming to traditional societal norms really struck a chord with him. (The man was a contactee who had made some money through a book about his experiences, and his parents had apparently shuffled him off to various boarding schools rather than listen further to his reports of strange visitors from outer space.)

It was heaven. The type of people that came there were exactly the type of people Gabriel liked to be around, and there weren't many of them, which meant that most of his time was spent "researching the merchandise."

He was getting paid to read his favorite kinds of books, so that he could converse intelligently about them with customers and hopefully sell them a little better.

Gabriel loved his job, and he was remarkably proud of it. It was the first job he'd gotten on his own, and he intended to keep it. He'd even sent a photo of his first paycheck home, just to show his father that yes, he could make it on his own without a university education.

Still, it was a little odd to know that he'd gone toe-to-toe with real extraterrestrial invaders. He wished that the aliens he knew, the ones he fought, were more like the ones other contactees encountered, the ones who only wanted to spread knowledge and sometimes bring warnings. The ones he knew wanted to start a war and take over the earth, much more like early sci-fi than most modern contact reports.

Either way, though, he had an opportunity at The Truth is Out There that he never could have anticipated or expected, and he had never been more grateful that he was involved in the UFO scene. It really was made up of some of the best people in the world, "crazy" or not.

The Way You Make Me Feel

Gabriel lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling. Hours were ticking by, he was sure - or maybe minutes, he refused to look at the clock and see. He was confused, frustrated, maybe even a little angry - but mostly only angry with himself.

How did he feel about Des? Confused, mostly. His fingers went up to brush his lips, and he couldn't help but remember that kiss. Both of them. How nice it had felt, to press his lips to Desmond's. How he hadn't wanted to kiss anyone since Vyth, hadn't even really thought about it, but all he wanted was to kiss Des again and again and again.

Did that actually mean he felt something for him, though? There was a difference between lust and love, he knew that, and the thought of being in lust with Des was bad enough, because he'd never been interested in a guy before.

He rolled over and buried his face int he pillow, groaning quietly. Why was this happening? Why had he let himself dwell on that single kiss, long enough to think of doing it again? He knew he was just making things hard on Des and on himself. And yet he couldn't sort out his feelings.

That he couldn't sort them out was probably the worst part. He knew he desired Des, but that wasn't enough. He'd desired the hell out of Vyth, and that had crashed and burned.

He was still wrapping his mind around being attracted to a guy, but that was almost the easiest part of this. He'd never been attracted to anyone until Vythica, and she was just one person - he knew Cait was attracted to both genders, he'd seen her her fawn over pretty girls as much as pretty boys. It wasn't hard to suppose he might be too.

It was his emotions that he was having trouble with.

Did he love Desmond Winchester?

He didn't want to try anything else unless he loved him. Unless he could be unshakably sure of that. If he went in without knowing for sure that his feelings were there, he'd just screw it up again like he had with Vythica, and then he wouldn't be able to face Des again, assurances that they sohuld be friends or not.

He couldn't figure anything out. He rolled back onto his back and groaned again, closing his eyes.

Maybe if he slept on it, things would be clearer in the morning?

And so he slept on it, and woke up surprisingly early given how late he'd finally fallen asleep. And he woke up sure of himself, sure that yes - he did have feelings for Des, there was no getting away from that, and it didn't matter that Des was a guy, or that they had only known each other a few weeks - Des was talented and sweet and stable and normal, and Gabriel needed some normal in his very out of control life.

He walked into the living room, and his heart sank when he saw the couch was empty. He went to the kitchen, and that was empty too, except for a note.

"I woke up early and didn't want to disturb you. This way you can think with a clear head and figure out what you really want with out anything influencing you."

Gabriel's heart started to hurt as he read the note, and he knew for sure that he was right.

"Goddamnit, Des," he murmured. He had figured out what he wanted, and the person he wanted to tell went and disappeared. How was that fair?
