Natron had been draining energy from civilians for a few hours that evening. It had essentially become his personal mission to keep a decent supply, and now that officers were once again expected to drain for the Negaverse, he was even more eager to do his duty.

But tonight he was looking for something a little more than that. One of the civilians he'd made into a target had decided to struggle, and had managed to get in a punch that left the Captain with a nasty bruise on his cheek.

So he'd decided for something a little better than just energy.

He backed the taller man against a wall and shoved a hand into his chest, wrapping it around his starseed.

"Hope you were looking to die tonight," he said, grinning viciously. The civilian whimpered fearfully.

Yeah, sometimes he was damn glad Painite had shown him how to do this.

Evalia had been walking to the little white truck that she sometimes drove when her little Vespa just wouldn't do the trick, It belonged to her father, but sense he traveled so much for work he never really used it. Terra-cotta pots had been on sale, and she was minded to have the children in her gardening group paint them. She had just loaded the pots into the back of the truck and closed it, when she heard the sounds of struggle coming from around the corner of the store.

She paused, hearing the thump of something hitting the wall. She thought that maybe it was some dogs fighting over scraps in the alley, but she didn't hear any growling. She furrowed her brows, a frown turning the corners of her lips down as she listened, hearing a whimper shiver out from the hidden scene.

She made up her mind hen she heard someone's voice, cruel and malicious. Was someone torturing a stray? It wasn't unheard of, but the thought horrified her. Filled with indignant rage she stormed off towards the corner, and peeked around the edge like some sort of cartoon character.

Her heart froze.

It was a familiar scene, one burned into her mind, like they had been etched behind her eyelids so every time that she tried to sleep she had to stare at it and relive it every night. Only this time it wasn't Avalon... It was a unknown villain to her, but he was doing the same thing. An arm buried deep in someones chest, trying to rip out the glimmering gem that Eva was sure contained a persons soul.

She shrank back around the edge of the corner, and pressed her back to the wall, trying to calm her breathing, feeling a panic attack creep up on her, an alien feeling to the normally calm young woman. She pressed her hand to her chest, trying to calm herself, hearing the whimpering again. The thought of the other person she had seen have their star seen removed... she tried not to think about it...

But if she didn't do anything, she would be committing a crime that in her mind was almost as bad as the thing she was letting happen. Closing her eyes she made up her mind... Using her will power she summoned her lantern, her cloths disappearing and replaced by the shimmering opalescent visage of Eden, and stepped out from around the corner. " Let him go " She made sure her voice was steady, but the effort made it come out quiet instead of authoritative like she had intended.

Natron was surprised by the sudden appearance of an Order power signature. It was someone weaker than him, a Page by his guess. He turned when she called out to him, raising an eyebrow.

"I don't think so," he said, and then he squeezed the civilian's starseed, making him yell in pain. "You know, I got Awakened into the Negaverse this way. A General stuck her hand into my chest and pumped in Chaos energy. I wonder what would happen if I tried?" He was pretty sure it would make a youma - and pretty sure he wasn't supposed to do that. Technically, the Negaverse was on a PR mission lately, so he definitely didn't intend to leave this civilian alive after he'd done a little terrorizing. Plus, he could always use more starseeds to heal himself with if necessary.

She looked not all that much older than him - was everyone in this war, except that damned Camelot, a kid? Ah well, if she was his age, she could handle the pounding he was going to have to hand her.

"You're some hero Knight girl, right? Why don't you come and stop me, huh?"

Eden took a half step forward, making a small sound as the poor civilian yelled. As he spoke, her eyes widened, horrified at the fact that was how these Negaverse agents were made " That's just horrible... " She said almost more to herself. She could have meant either Natron having to go through that or that he was repeating the process to an innocent stranger.

She took another couple of steps closer, the cage of her lantern swaying with her steps. She was really only a few feet away from the pair of people, and the pained sounds of the civilian made her eyes widen a little bit. She wasn't quite sure how to stop him. If she just like... tackled him, would the impact just rip the mans starseeds out? Hesitation marked itself clearly in her steps, and she stood there, a shimmering pillar in the light of her own lantern.

She tried to approach him like she would a snarling dog, taking another step, slow and deliberate. " If someone did this to you, you must know how much pain your causing... just let him go, ok? " She reached out a hand, as if maybe she would lay a hand on his arm, a small comforting smile on her face, though her pale green eyes flicked to the face of the victim, his face caught in an expression of extreme pain.

Who knows, maybe this negaverse agent wasn't as lost as Avalon?

Natron raised his eyebrows at her. Was she really reaching out and trying to talk down someone who had a hand in another person's chest? Someone clearly seconds from committing murder? Well, that was brave of her, he'd give her that.

"I should end his suffering, you're right," Natron said agreeably, and he yanked as quickly as he could, pulling out the glowing gem that contained the man's life force. He slumped down, collapsing against the wall. "And that's that."

He gripped it, but not tight enough to crush. "You have a few minutes, I think, if you'd like to try and get it back." Sometimes he frightened himself with his own sadistic streak. A year ago, he never would have seen himself smirking after murdering someone - but here he was.

" No, that's not what - " And she gasped as he yanked the poor mans star seed out. It was such a beautiful and fragile gem, but something that should never be able to be seen. And if she didn't do something fast that flickering light would be snuffed out forever.

She made her decision in a split second. Oh sure, she was positive it wasn't going to end well for her... when had anything ended well for her in the pat few weeks? But she was sure she would regret it more if she did nothing.

She gripped the handle of her lantern tightly, her eyes flicking from the starseed to Natrons face, back to the starseed.. then back to natron's face once again. Her expression was infinitely sad, as if she were viewing a man drowning, and knowing he was just out of reach.

She moved quickly, with a speed that she didn't know she had. No one had yet to explain to her that she was faster in her page form then she was non-powered up. She swung her lantern right at Natron's noggin', hoping that he would either startle and drop the starseed or simply... oh she didn't know, decide that maybe murdering people wasn't a good pastime?

Natron was actually surprised by her swinging her lantern at him, and for a second the confident expression went away as he ducked to avoid it. He tucked the starseed into one of his jacket pockets and then threw his body weight at her, intent on knocking her to the ground. He wasn't going to go easy on her just because she was obviously new and a girl.

In fact, he intended to make this a very difficult fight. Maybe he'd take two starseeds tonight.

The fact that Eden was not a fighter was glaringly obvious. Fear for anothers life had pushed her into this situation, and she was oh so quickly realizing she was in over her head. You couldn't just flail at a Nega and expect them to go slinking back into the shadows... of COURSE they are going to fight back. If that were the case there wouldn't even be a war going on. Maybe the wild swing of her lantern wasnt the best approach, a desperate move prompted by the violent yanking out of the strangers star seed. It left her body wide open, and the Agent obviously took advantage of that as he flung himself at her like a muscly little battering ram.

All of this floated through Edens mind, and was articulated in a very girlish squeak as she was tackled to the ground, hitting so hard it knocked the wind out of her. Her lantern clattered to the floor, casting wild hectic shadows as they hit the ground in a tangle of limbs. Instinctively she had reached for something to steady her fall, she she had just sort of grabbed on to natron's jacket, her eyes wide as she fought with her lungs to draw in breath that her body just refused to take.

Natron grinned. Here was a very, very good opportunity - one he didn't have often. A chance to really leave a mark on this pathetic little Page's memory. He used his weight to pin her down - and then he stuck his hand in her chest, just like he'd done tot he civilian earlier. The ginger-haired Captain's expression shifted to a vicious, murderous smirk.

"Tell me...does it hurt as much as you thought it would?" He tilted his head to the side. Yes, he felt pretty evil right then, he had to admit - and a little bit like some kind of serial killer. Still, he liked to think that this memory would stick with her for a very, very long time - that she'd hold onto the knowledge of just how very deadly her enemy was.

She saw it happen in slow motion, the way some things do when you know there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop it. Clarity on a scale that was almost dizzying, and then followed by the red wash of excruciating pain.

She would have screamed if she could, but she had still yet to draw a deep breath, the muscles of her chest still contracted against against the hard hit to the ground. She stared up at him with wide eyes, clearly terrified, her fingers gripping at his shoulders as if she were willing her body to push him away, instead she merely kneading at them like a weak kitten, her mouth forming a little "o" of pain.

Oh god, she was really going to die this time. What was the whole point of this stupid powered life if all that it was going to accomplish as watching people die before getting her killed by some lunatic in a dark alley. Because she was clearly convinced he was a lunatic. There was self awareness in the eyes that looked down at her, but there was a dark mirth in his eyes that said he clearly enjoyed what he was doing. Which almost scared her more then the thought of dieing... The thought that after she was dead... He would still be there, killing innocent people and grinning at them like a cat does playing with a wounded bird.

Natron squeezed her starseed and then, likely inexplicably to her, he released it and stood up, reaching into his pocket and dropping the civilian's starseed on her chest. He wasn't intereste din killing her - scaring the life out of her was enough. He was still wearing that same, awful, terrifying grin.

"I hope you remember this," he said. "And if you're quick, he might still live. Maybe." He turned and began to walk away from her. He was finished, and she clearly wasn't going to fight him. Once he was a few dozen yards away, he teleported, winking away form her and back home.

He liked the evenings when he could stick himself in someone's mind.

Eden felt him squeeze her starseed like a hotwire running through her who being. Her spine arched underneath him and a strangled mewling sound escaped her, the most her body could eek out without the lack of air.

And then just like that, he left her alone, standing up calmly as if they had just finished a game of chess instead of him playing patty-cake with her starseed. She saw red dots in her vision, and the sudden lack of pain left her ears roaring with the sound of her own blood rushing through her veins. She almost didnt even hear his words, until he dropped the starseed onto her, its light fading quickly, ready to wink about at any moment. She cupped it in one hand, forcing breath into her lungs as she half crawled, half scooted across the pavement to the wall were the mans body was slumped, her eyes on the captain as he walked away, seemingly completely ignoring her.

The starseed was so dull, she could hardly even see its light anymore, the glint from the streetlights on its crystalline surface were brighter then its shine. It felt so very fragile that she cupped it gently. She didn't even know what to do with it. She held it over his chest, waiting for it to do something. When nothing happened she set it on his chest, the edges catching on the mans shirt.

"Come on.. wake up! " she said, her voice quiet and filled with the edge of a sob. He didn't move, his chest didn't rise with breath, his eyelids did not flicker. " C'mon c'mon... " she shook his shoulders a little bit, trying to pull him to consciousness, a little cry escaping her when the star seed rolled down his chest to the concrete, its corners chipping away with the sound of breaking glass.

She picked up the star seed so carefully, its edges cracked and its light gone, dull and lifeless. She stared at it, holding it out to him again, her eyes wide and tear filled. She couldn't even say anything, she just sat there, on her knees, holding the lifeless crystal.... If she was asked, she couldn't have even said how long she sat there, staring at it, cracked and broken. It was only the growing sound of police sirens that roused her... Coming closer. Obviously someone had called the police, scuffles in alleys were not uncommon in this part of town.

Her movements felt sluggish, as if she had been out in the cold for hours and hours. She set the starseed back down on his chest, reverently, as if she were handling the most precious thing in the world, the cracks spreading with the tinkling sound of cracking glass.

" I'm sorry... ' She said, and leaned forward on her knees, kissing the mans forehead, growing cooling in the crisp night air. She didn't know what kind of life he had lead, or what he was leaving behind. All she knew is no matter what kind of person he had been, he hadn't deserved this.

She rose up on wobbly legs, picking up her lantern, and backed away slowly down the alleyway, the sound of sirens getting closer, jarring her back to reality. She turned and took off, running as fast as her legs would carry her. Faster then she knew she could run, all the way home, until she was locked behind her front door, in the safety of her own home.... But it wasn't enough. She threw down her lantern, her powered garb disappearing in a flurry of glittering light, leaving her just Evalia...

How she missed being just Evalia.
