As Rivener and Aphismet come home from the eventful birthday party... Aphismet exited the building quietly, Rivener in tow. The guardian still had a dumb smile plastered on his face. He was hardly watching where he was going, and headed roughly towards the trainstation. Rivener had been none too pleased to be asked to leave. He and Roux had been relaxing quite peacefully in the corner, taking it easy. And now to boot, his guardian seemed to be drunk or something. "The trains don't run this late, Aph," Riv snipped moodily."Hunh?""The trains! They don't run, stupid. We should call a cab.""Or we could just walk, right?" Aph added, oblivious to Rivener's anger. He grinned over to his Raevan. Rivener frowned, an eyebrow quirking. "What the hell is wrong with you tonight? You didn't drink that much, did you?""Just a few Ceasars, but they WERE really strong!"Sigh... Rivener rolled his eyes. "Well, fine. If we're walking home, we should go that way," he said, poiting to the left. He'd given up on being mad; his guardian was obviously not picking up on it. But he couldn't help himself from being intolerant of the human's usual idiocy.Aph giggled, twirled, and headed that way, a strange skip in his step. Rivener watched him go with concerned puzzlement. He didn't know Aph could be so bubbly. It was kinda scary. "Stop that," the Raevan almost squeaked."Stop whaaaat?" Aph sang, much like Beauregard would. "THAT! Stop that! What's the matter with you?!" Riv tried to supress a smile at the singing. He was a sucker for song, which is why he adored the little singing whale so much."I'm just happy! Is that so wrong?" Aph pouted, sticking his hands in his pockets. He kicked at some rocks as he walked along. "Well..." Rivener couldn't say that it was okay. For some reason he seemed to wish misery onto his guardian! How odd... Riv frowned, wondering where the root of all this was.Aph looked over at Riv. He might be drunk, and inordinately happy, but Aph was still sober enough to detect something was wrong when Riv didn't agree that he had a right to be happy. "Rivener? What's wrong, why don't you think I should be happy?"Rivener frowned, and reached up with a hand to twirl at the bead that swung at the end of one his hair strands. "I... I'm not sure, really.""Well, talk to me! We don't really talk, you and I, do we?" Aph suddenly realized. "We haven't really talked since Christmas. Why is that?"Riv shrugged. He felt on the spot, and he didn't like it. His wings flared out instinctively, like a scorpion would lift its stinger when it felt threatened. Aph recognized the motion. He'd seen Cuddles do something similar often enough, when Aph would play-pick on him. The guardian raised his hands and smiled. "I'm not forcing you to talk about it, Riv... I just wanted you to know that I'm here to listen if you ever need it."For a long while, the two walked on in silence. They were reaching the edges of town when Rivener finally spoke up. "You don't talk to me."Aphismet blinked and looked over, confused for a moment before remembering. He smiled. "I know, that's what I mean, but you don't talk to me ei-""No, I mean when you decide things. It affects my life too, but you don't talk to me about it and see what I think. You just go ahead and do things and I'm forced to come along whether I like it or not." "...What are you talking about?" Aph had a nagging suspicion that he knew what Riv was talking about, but he wasn't sure... "Like when you decided to adopt Isi. And when you decided that we were going to live at his house. And when you took that job that makes you work late, so that I always have to go outside and feed on my own." Rivener's red eyes were focused on the ground as he finally let out everything. "I really didn't like Isi at all. I didn't want him to be with us, part of our... our family. He's taking all your attention now, and you always play with him and have fun. I'm left all alone."Aphismet's jaw hung open. He had no idea Rivener felt this way! "B-but you're not alone! At the very least, E-eiry and Beauregard...""Not at first, Eiry wasn't here. And Beaubeau isn't the same as a person, you know that. And even now that Eiry is here, it's still not the same. I miss..." Rivener hesitated, wondering if he should really say it. A moment later he did, his voice low and regretful. "I miss being just me and you. We were just starting to connect, with painting together and learning things together... And then Isi came along and ruined it all."Aphismet felt like the worst person in the universe. He was on the verge of tears. "I... I'm so sorry, Riv... I never noticed, I thought you were f-fine..."Rivener had stopped walking, and shrugged, his eyes still down. He didn't know what else he could say.Aphismet walked over to his Raevan and hugged him. He felt Riv stiffen in surprise at the hug, but the Scorpion gradually relaxed and finally hugged back. Tears rolling down his face (he blamed the alcohol for his over-emotional state!), Aph blubbered: "I'll pay more attention to you, Rivener, I promise. From now on, I'll be a good Guardian. I'm so sorry! W-we'll start learning things again tomorrow if you want! I'll get some books. A-and we can still paint together! I just thought that since lately, you'd been very private about your paintings, that it meant you didn't want me there with you anymore." The Guardian snugged against Riv's hair. Rivener floated a little lower, startled at how much he was enjoying the feeling of being cradled by his idiot keeper. He could feel his own heart swelling with relief and melancholy at the same time. He squeezed, hugging Aph closer."Gah, you're hurting me!" Aph laughed, breath short. Riv let go, floating backwards hurriedly. "Ah, I'm sorry! Are you alright?""Y-yes. Wow, you're pretty strong." He chuckled, and began walking slowly again, staying near Riv's side. "S-so, do you hate Isi still? He's your brother now, you should try to-""No, I don't hate him. He did bring Eiry, after all, and Beaubeau. And the house is much bigger and comfortable... And all those ghosts are really fun to have around."Aph winced at the mention of the ghosts. "And besides, since that time we went to the Marsh... Well, he's not so bad. But I can't help resenting him a bit for taking all your time." Riv pouted slightly."Well, that's normal. Brothers are supposed to be at odds, I guess. And this whole family thing would kinda make you the middle brother; I hear that's the worse place to be." Aph reached over and rustled Riv's hair. "I'll try to be a better guardian from now on, though. Let's smile, ok?"Rivener reached up to smooth back his mussed-up hair, but he glanced over at his smiling Guardian. Slowly, a smile spread on Rivener's face too.
"Ok. Let's smile."

Aphismet's Diary Dear Diary; Well, things have been ups and downs lately. First there was that night the Raevans went out into the Marsh and got attacked by some crazy Murderous ghost... I'm still not sure how Isi managed to send it away, and that scares me. And Isi says he "banished" or "bound" or something like that, that ghost to the graveyard? I didn't know Isi was an exorcist?! And Eiry's wing got broken, and Rivener's throat was all cut up... and Isi himself was exhausted from trudging through the swamps on crutches! That was a really stressful time. Definately a "down". Then there was Dr Kyou and Chloe's birthday party. That was an "UP" for damn sure! I had lots of fun, had a few drinks, danced a bit, saw some friends... And Chloe and I kissed! I can still hardly believe it! I... I haven't been able to see her since, though. I called and left a few messages saying hi, but I probably sounded like an idiot... My schedule is a little hard to work around, seeing as I work most nights from 4 pm to midnight. sad That doesn't leave much time for dates, and I don't have many days off... I'll have to try and book some vacation time soon. Then there was the walk home from that night. That was a "down". Poor Rivener! He's been feeling all alone and neglected all this time, and he never told me! Well, I have to try and be more attentive to him. If he was an actual pet Scorpion still, he'd be dead by now from my lack of care! D: I'm horrible! But, I promise I'll try harder! Overall, there's my job. Despite the late nights and the busy schedule, that's an "UP" too. I've moved up slowly through the ranks from busboy (until I paid off that debt from Beauregard's little adventure), to unpaid apprentice, to Paid Apprentice! And I've heard through the grapevine that I was up for promotion sometime soon, to Assistant Saucier! o.O That's an awesome position, and the money would be great! Well, my pay right now is already better than what I made at the Pizza Parlor... But the new job would be enough for me to actually save up some funds, and maybe make the house better! I could buy a car, maybe, or we could all go on a vacation... Oh, wouldn't that be nice! Maybe I could surprise everyone and take them to Gambino for a week at the beach or something! Umm, I think that's it. I can't think of anything else.... I have to go now, I promised Rivener we'd go out into the Marsh to take some pictures of stuff we could paint. I wanna do that before it gets dark, in case that damn ghost shows up again... *shivers* Ack! Well, gotta go!

Rivener's Diary I almost forgot about this, so I better write it down before I forget again. Thank goodness that show came on and made me remember. I am going to get rid of that murderous b*****d who broke Eiry's wing. I don't want to not go into the swamp anymore, and that graveyard was really pretty to photograph so I want to go there again, but that stupid ghost is there... Last time, I wasn't able to do anything to him. He almost killed me and Eiry. Isi saved us by throwing something at him, and when I asked what it was, he said it was holy water. I don't think that can kill him though, it just hurts him a lot... And anyway, I can't produce holy water in my stingers. So I had this idea when I was lying there with Eiry that one night. I remembered that Eiry himself is part ghost, so he can touch and hear and feel these spirits. If he were strong enough, he might be able to kill Edgar, but he's still too young. I was trying to think how I could use Eiry's powers. THEN I remembered the time I had some of Lazarus's blood in me! I had his powers for a week, to a lesser degree of course. But once that faded, I was still left with a new poison I can create, one which burns up your blood and causes a high fever. If I inject enough, the fever could kill you! Although it's a great poison for assassination, (since it looks like a natural death), I haven't really had a chance to use it yet. I prefer the neurotoxin in a fight anyway. But I digress; the point is, I think I might gain some kind of spirit-based poison if I get some of Eiry's blood in my veins! If I can do that, I would be able to attack that damn spirit and be done with him. So, Plan for Getting Rid of Edgar: 1- Get Eiry to agree. 2- Don't let Isi or Aphi find out! 3- Get Eiry blood. 4- Hide new powers from Isi and Aph. 5- Test new poison (if any) 6- Attack the b*****d and kill him! I know it sounds much easier than it will be, but I can't stand here and do nothing. He attacked me and my little brother! He's going to pay, even if it takes me years, I swear I'm going to destroy him.

"This is nice, isn't it?" Aphismet said, smiling as he walked through the woods, hands in his jeans pockets, breathing in the warm summer air. "This place can get really scary at night, but it sure looks like heaven in the daytime."
"It's not that scary," Rivener countered with a smirk. "I'm not afraid."
"Of course you aren't," Aph laughed. "You're so much braver than I am. I often wonder where you picked that up."
"Well, I saw much worse things on TV when I was young," Rivener said, the only thing he could think of.
Aph nodded. No doubt that was why; after watching things like horror movies and army flicks as a baby, Rivener probably wouldn't be scared very easily. He still didn't understand that life was a lot more dangerous than movies, and that heroes can't always save the day in real life. But hopefully he'd grow up and learn that someday soon.
The pair walked (or rather, one walked and the other floated) through the woods, the thick green canopy letting in sunlight in dappled spots, the scent of flowers and tree sap heavy in the air, bird song and insect buzz lilting like music around them. There was a comfortable silence between them, and Aphismet noticed it for the first time. He smiled.
For close to an hour the two walked, enjoying the sunshine. As they began the walk back home, Aphismet finally broke the silence.
"Riv, I'm really happy you're here."
"Where?"
"With me, silly. Alive, and with me."
Rivener startled, and actually stopped advancing. He blinked, looking at his guardian. His heart was skipping. Weird!
Aph stopped when he noted Riv slowing. "A-are you okay?" he asked.
"I, uh... Y-yeah." Riv had a strange smile tugging at his lips, and he was making a face he'd never made before. There was a lump in his throat. "J-just keep walking, dolt," he snipped, floating ahead to hide this strange face of his.
Aphismet sighed, but walked along, worrying.
For a few minutes they kept walking, Aph watching Riv's shoulders hunch up as they advanced, his head dipping. Was he okay, really?! Aphismet began to wring his hands. Soon, Riv stopped, and so did Aph, afraid of moving lest his Raevan get upset.
For a while the two stood there, Riv's head dipping lower.
All of a sudden, Riv turned and rushed at Aph, grabbing him in a bear hug, hiding his face in Aph's neck.
The cook yelped out in surprise, and it took a few seconds before he realized that his neck was wet, and Riv was breathing in gasps... "A-are you crying?" the man asked, slipping his hands around Riv.
"Shuddup!" Riv sobbed, hiding his face deeper in his guardian's neck. He'd never really touched Aph... Never hugged anyone purely out of joy.
Aph was starting to worry, and so he was starting to pet Riv's back in a panicked fashion... His own heartbeat was racing, thinking that his Raevan might be sick! Oh, what would he do!? He'd have to call Dr Tsu, and-
"I love you too, Aphismet." Rivener muttered, half-muffled into the man's neck.
"Wh-what?!"
"That's the first time I didn't feel like a burden, or an accident. You never told me you liked having me around. You never hugged me."
"Wh... Well, you kinda... you really scare me sometimes, Riv. I somehow forgot you're just a young Raevan, and you need love just like anyone else." Aph smiled and stroked the silky black hair. He'd never realized how delicate Rivener actually was. The bone structure, the small hands, the almost lace-like ears, the thin bones of the wings... He just looked so much scarier normally, but now, Aph couldn't imagine ever being afraid of this little thing, his little boy. "I'm sorry I never said it, Riv. I love you."
Rivener snuggled Aph's neck, smiling. He never wanted to let go. The Raevan felt full, and warm. He lost track of how much time the two stood there, hugging.
The sobs were calming now, and Riv was starting to come back to his normal senses. He disengaged the hug and wiped his eyes, clearing his throat and trying to sound macho again. "Don't you tell anyone about this," he threatened, although he couldn't put as much sting in his words as he used to. As the two began to walk home again, Riv stayed close by his keeper's side and even slipped his hand in Aph's.
Were things really going to be much different from now on, both males wondered?

Although he wonders why he'd been chosen for this, Aph agrees to go to the Planetarium. Rivener comes along, although he despises Sevilin. Will the two end up making new friends, or getting thrown out of the Planetarium?!
