Aphismet toted the beachbag on one shoulder, grinning. It was heavy with food and towels and drinks, but he hardly felt it; his step was light and bouncy. He was on Vacation!
He'd saved up money that he normally would have spent on rent, had he still been living in his apartment, and he'd found that it really piled up quickly! Before he knew it, Aph had paid off most of his debts, and had enough left to pay himself and his family a nice vacation to Isle de Gambino. The cottage they'd rented was wonderfully rustic, the porch steps leading directly to the beach itself. An area for campfires was set up there on the sand, and Aph was looking forward to tonight for everyone to try making smores.
For now though, the ocean was calling! Their first vacation day was a clear, sunny-skied, warm one, with the soft ocean breeze cooling them just enough. Aph's suggestion to go find a nice spot and swim had been quickly followed up as things were packed and snacks were made. The group now walked along the shore.
Rivener in particular had been a surprise; he, who disliked the cold water of the ocean, had been very happy to go on vacation. As a matter of fact, he was uncharacteristically content. Smiles flashed at everyone easily, and he often sighed softly, relaxing. The reason for all this happiness was simple: warm sand. It spoke to a deep down part of him, and made him feel like he was Home. He was looking forward to lying down on the beach and not moving for hours.
Aphismet wore his swim trunks and a sleeveless hoodie, which he was starting to regret putting on. It was getting warmer by the minute. "Here seems like a good place, what do you think, guys?" he asked, eager to put down the beachbag and remove this shirt.
"Fine by me!" Rivener called with a smile, immediately plopping himself down onto the sand and sighing as he spread his wings out. His ribbon spun in a strangely snake-like pattern before settling itself. "Aaaaahhhhhh," the Scorpion sighed, closing his eyes.

From behind Aphismet came a sound that sounded very much like how a sandbag would sound when dropped on the floor. Closely following the sandbag-like noise was a curse from Isi's lips and a disbelieving chuckle. For the crippled boy, it was hard for him to walk on the soft sand. It sucked his velco-sandals (for he needed the kind of sandal that would offer him the most support) in and clutched onto his forearm crutches so he had to jerk them out whenever he moved. Not only that, but it took a couple moments of fussing and stabilizing for him to actually stand in a position that could support his weight.
"Uncle Isi?" Eiry asked from behind the bag of towels he was carrying, "Are you alright?" Eiry peered over the edge down to where his guardian lay face-first on the ground, his crutches in an awkward position.
"I'd forgotten how much I hate sand," Isi muttered under his breath. That breeze-less day, Isi had worn a tank shirt and multi-pocketed shorts that reached all the way down to his knees. Underneath he had his swim shorts on, but he wanted to wear his shorts as well for the sake of being able to stuff the pockets full of shells, worn pieces of glass, and interesting rocks. Rolling himself over onto his back so his crutches clattered and awkwardly flailed with the air, as if he were some long armed spider stuck on his back, Isi laid himself flat and promptly gave up. "Yes, I'm fine," he said in a sarcastic growl, "Yes, Aphi, this place is great, I don't want to move."
Eiry shrugged and floated low so he could set down the bag of towels he was carrying. Lifting himself up, he floated high, trying to get a bird's eye view of this amazing new world. On the way there, everyone in the family had to coddle, argue, and bargain with Eiry for him to even get into the car. The argument started with a wild goose chase around the house that led to everyone calming Eiry down. They then tricked Eiry to go outside and got him close to the car, after which, resulted in another goose chase, crying, begging, pleading, and yelling. Eiry got in the car after being promised three free tricks on Riv, story-time with Aphi for a week every evening, and several new plants from Isi collection to be used as back-up snacks.
The entire way there, Eiry was pressed into Riv's arms, hiding his face for the entire journey in Riv's neck.
Now that they were out of the car, Eiry was finally calm enough to notice his surroundings. To him, it almost seemed as if this place were just next door to their home. Not only that, but this place was...strange. Granted, it was new, but Eiry was startled by the amount of water and how it stretched out as far as the eye could see. He almost thought that it was an illusion-based trick. He was also confused by the sand and the weird plants here. Well, he'll have plenty of time to explore this new frontier, but right now he needed to...
Jump on his brother!
Landing on his brother sumo-style, Eiry dug his fingers into Riv's sides and giggled loudly. He couldn't help himself! Riv just looked so peaceful...Eiry had to destroy the peace somehow. And his brother had closed his eyes! It was perfect! It was his duty as a little brother! And so Eiry had jumped on his brother.

Nearby, an unattended beach blanket in a rainbow of colors waited beneath the shade of a palm tree. A messenger bag, sandals, and a towel awaited the return of their owner. However, Natsuki would make them wait a bit longer. The summer sunshine charged her battery, as she ran along the coastline, salt water breaking at her feet. Day in and day out, she worked her feet to the bone, but unlike the long days at Cafe Jubilee, the shop owner could enjoy the sensation of sand and water massaging and refreshing her feet.
Short terry cloth shorts and a matching zip up jacket in pale gray complimented her petite figure. Her morning runs contributed to her new bikini body, sunkissed highlights, and beach glow. Her long red ponytail bobbed in sync with her pace, in time with the music fueling her gait. Dark sunglasses shielded her stormy gray eyes from the sun glinting off the crests. Finally returning to her starting point, her beach blanket, Natsuki rubbed the back of her neck, and clicked her music player off.
A soft smile crossed her lips when she noticed that Aphismet found his way to her favorite beach, and he wasn't alone. Rivener, one of the raevans she liked least was in tow, as well as two other individuals, whom she didn't know; from the looks of it, another raevan and possibly another guardian. Taking her time, she wrapped her headphones around the music player and tucked it into her bag. She stripped off her jacket, revealing a colorful halter style bikini top in a flurry of vivid colors. Stretching again, she unceremoniously dropped the jacket atop her bag, and proceeded to draw her long hair up into a bun, fastening it in place with a couple of hairpins.
"Hey Aphismet, finally got a chance to take a vacation?" Natsuki called out, as she walked over to the group slowly. Recalling their last, albeit brief conversation, she really didn't get much of a chance to talk to the fellow raevan owner. However, she did avert disaster by intervening in his heated discussion with Julian, a situation she still couldn't make head or tails of. "What brings you up to my hometown of Isle de Gambino today? Family outing?" she asked, politely nodding to the motley crew of four.
She knew family was an odd choice of word, but after seeing the interaction with other raevans and their guardians, there simply was no better words to describe it.

Aphismet dropped the beachbag and fetched out two towels, one for him and one for Isi, laying them both out so that at least his Brother could sit on something other than sand. "Sorry about it being so hard to move for you... I can piggy-back you to the water later! once in, you won't need your crutches right?" He grinned.
He'd been half-way done unzipping his hoodie when a woman's voice called out to him. Aph startled and turned, eyes widening and a slow grin spreading on his lips. He supressed a blush, but zipped up his hoodie quick as a blink. "H-hey! Natsuki! You live here? Lucky you, it's such a wonderful place! Oh, erm, yes, it's a family vacation, actually!" He laughed, and pointed to introduce the others. "This is my little brother Isi, and that's his Raevan Eiry. And of course, you already know Rivener, right?"
Rivener, normally, would have been quite upset at being jumped on. Eiry would have earned himself a good smack on the back of the head and a long screamed string of reprimands. Today, however, nothing seemed to be able to bring the Scorpion down. When the ghostly Frei dropped on him and started to tickle, Riv simply coiled up, laughing, and tickled back, the two brothers ending in a mixed-up tangle of ribbons and limbs on the sand.
Rivener's hair was splaying like a dark hand behind him whenever he was back-down on the sand, almost like it was trying to absorb all the heat it could. The Raevan's hair ended up quite filled with sand, and every time he flung his head around, a dust cloud of the stuff would kick up.
"Hey come on, stop that," Riv said with a smirk. "There's someone here, stop monkeying around!" Riv attempted to sit up, and glanced at Natsuki. A flash of memory, and he recalled where he'd seen her before; the birthday party, where she'd been bossing everyone around and trying to tell Roux and he what to do. For a moment he stuck out his bottom lip, wondering if it was worth throwing a fuss over... And finally he decided that no, not today at least. Today, everyone needed a second chance. With a dazzling friendly smile, Riv bowed his head at Natsuki. "Good to see you," he said, surprising the crap out of his guardian.

"I'll make it around as long as I'm not trapped in a padded room," Isi chuckled and he very carefully moved himself onto the sand, dully making note of how the sand rippled and moved underneath the towel to conform to his body. When Aphi offered him a piggy back ride, the boy loudly scoffed, but as soon as their eyes connected, Isi gave slight nod of his head which said in brother language, Could you, please?. He still couldn't bring himself to ask for piggy-back rides out of pride, but it was his brother. It was Aphi, the only person who he'd let himself receive help from. He was just getting to unwrapping his crutches from his arms when a new voice came out of no where. Jerking his head up to inspect the new comer, Isi tried to pick her face out from his memory, but to no avail. The red hair was...somewhat familiar. She was barely on the edge of his recognition. Unable to do much else than smile and paint himself as the picture of a sweet younger sibling, Isi continued untying the crutches from his arms. When Aphi pointed to him as an introduction, Isi waved his hand as his left arm became free, "Hello, Natsuki, it's a pleasure to meet you." Glancing over at his raevan, Isi continued "Eiry is probably just as happy to meet you... Eiry! Eiry, say hello!"
"How do you do!" Eiry called mechanically from where he sat near his brother, raking his hand through his turquoise hair. His ribbon was tangled with Riv's arms so he playfully curled his ribbon and yanked. He succeeded in knocking Riv's arms out from behind him so that the older raevan fell back against the sand. He was still feeling the after-effects of being tickled, so he giggled like a boiling pot of water, trying to brush off the sand that had been kicked over him by the scuffle. He immediately decided that sand...Was hot and sticky. So he simply went intangible for a couple moments, in which the sand simply rolled off his skin, and became solid again.
Huh? A new person? Eiry turned bright blood red eyes at the newcomer, full of wonder. He didn't recognize her, so he didn't show any particular amount of excitement.

"Born and raised not too far from here. It's a pleasure to meet you Isi and Eiry," Natsuki smiled, smiling brilliantly at Aphi's brother and his raevan. With hesitation she turned her attention to Rivener, and was pleasantly surprised when he was unsettlingly polite, given their prior meeting. "You too, Rivener. Are you enjoying the sunshine?"
Normally, the spunky twentysomething would second guess the scorpion raevan's wolf in sheep's clothing smile, but if he chose to be cordial, she saw no reason in rattling the aquarium as it be. Natsuki noted that Rivener was also preoccupied by Eiry, and she watched them slowly with amusement. Isi seemed nice enough, but she was a bit disappointed to receive such a luke warm greeting from Eiry.
"How about a swim or building some sand castles?" Natsuki asked, pushing her fringe from her gray eyes and smiling genuinely. "The water's nice and cool, but still a bit warm in the shallows."

Aphismet smiled, but he struggled to keep his eyes from straying to the brightly-colored top of Natsuki's outfit. "Erm, a swim would be great! that's what we came here for, right?" he asked, turning a bright-eyed smile to his brother.
Rivener, his arms tugged out from under him, fell onto his back with an Oof!, but it didn't wipe the smile from his face. He simply wiggled and worked his arms free of the other's ribbons, staying on his back as he answered the red-haired woman's question. "I'm very much enjoying the sunshine, yes. I love beach sand and warm sun..." He sighed happily, digging his fingers into the sand by his sides, wings spreading out contentedly. "I'm not going to swim, but you should, Eiry. I'm sure you'll like it," Riv said, partly to get rid of his little brother for a second, partly because he truly thought Eiry would like it.
Aphi got up, and for a moment he fidgeted with the zipper of his hoodie... He wondered if he had the guts to take off the shirt in front of a girl. He'd taken a long time to convince himself to bare skin in the first place, knowing there would be girls around. But now, with a girl he actually KNEW around, he wasn't sure he could do it. "S-so come on then, Isi... We're going in?"

Isi could tell that his brother was nervous. In fact, it was kind of hard not to tell, the way he glued his eyes to her face and looked somewhat relieved when he turned his eyes to Isi. The crippled boy simply chuckled at the elder's behavior, but when he was asked a question, the boy immediately stopped laughing. He plastered an ear to ear smile, and glanced at the water, "Swim," he echoed sarcastically, "I like to put it that way. It makes my dog paddling sound a lot more appeasing." Then he agreed happily, this time sounding honest, "A swim in the water would be really nice for a day like this. We're going in! The sunscreen should be dry now, too." he added as an afterthought. To convince the others that he truly wanted to go for a swim, he pulled his tank shirt up and over his head. He folded it neatly and placed it in their bag where the towels used to be. Slowly, he began to pick himself up from the ground. He thought that he would be able to get himself up to his feet without his crutches, but as soon as he got up enough to loose his balance, he did, and fell forward onto his knees.
"Alright, I think I'm up enough...Aphi?" Isi turned a baleful, embarrassed, sort of angry that he couldn't get up look at his older brother.
"Swim?" echoed the frei nervously. He glanced at the ocean of...OCEAN and then back to his brother, "You're not going to go in because it's cold and you like warm," he said, stating the obvious with a pout of disappointment. He was planning to push Rivener into the waves, but now that the other wouldn't go in, his mischief was ruined. Sighing, he puffed himself up and lifted up off the sand.
"I'll go investigate," Eiry said, turning away from Riv so he could float over to those getting ready to head down to the beach. Floating beside Natsuki, Eiry curiously forgot about pouting after his brother, and reached out to touch Natsuki's hair. He was expecting it to be hot like fire, but it wasn't. Giving her a look that clearly expressed his confusion, he asked, "Pretty lady? Why doesn't your hair burn like a flame?"

She wasn't surprised that Rivener would decline the invitation. From what she knew of reptiles, frolicking in the waves wasn't exactly their forte, and she certainly didn't want to force the issue, since they were being relatively civil.
She smiled as Aphismet suggested they go swimming, but she couldn't lay her finger on what exactly had the guy so distracted. A pang of guilt hit her when she saw Isi struggling to stand up and his crutches close by. How could she be so insensitive? Her charismatic smile faultered a litle when he fell over, onto all fours. Kneeling down at his side, she put a soft hand on Isi's shoulders. "Shall we walk together?" she asked, trying to politely offer a friendly hand to Aphi's brother.
A small squeak of surprise, slipped past her lips when Eiry touched her hair. Her gray eyes sparkled as the fresh-faced raevan called her 'Pretty Lady'. "My hair is only fire colored," Natsuki said, wrinkling her nose in appreciation of Eiry's intelligent question. "I'm just a human with no special powers, Eiry."

Aphismet smiled at his brother, but when he saw Natsuki kneel and offer her help (basically), Aph hurried to interject. "Errrhhh, it's alright Natsuki, I got it. I promised him a piggy back ride earlier, and I wouldn't want to dissapoint." He attempted to take the blame for the boy's need of a ride. He grinned and knelt down, showing his back to his little brother and reaching back with his arms, waiting for the kid to hop on. He gave Natsuki a meaningful glance and mouthed as clearly as he could: "He doesn't like to be reminded", hoping she would get the message.
Rivener smiled at Eiry and nodded, glad that his brother at least understood that he really disliked the water. He'd been worried that Eiry would try to pull him there or bring some over to splash on him, but the green frei seemed to accept the situation without a fuss. Closing his eyes happily, Riv simply settled back onto the sand, spreading out to catch as much sunshine as he could.

When Natsuki bent down beside him and gave him that...that look of pity...That sad smile of compassion...and the hand...Well, to put it plainly, if Isi was a cat, his hair would be standing up on end, his eyes laid back and his teeth bared in a warning hiss. Luckily, before he could communicate much more of his dispassion for being pitied, Aphismet broke in and interrupted everything. Isi breathed a sigh of relief and put down his shields. Thank god, for...Family. Isi felt his stomach flutter gratefully for having a big brother who'd protect him and save him from situations such as this. Before Aphi, it was hard times for Isi whenever he went out to public. Even more so because he had to keep himself in check with his old grandma running around like a lunatic. Reaching up, he clambered onto his brother's back, using his shoulders to pull himself up so that he was standing. Then he straddled Aphi's back and clung tightly. Once Aphi had hooked his elbows underneath his weak legs, Isi released his grip. Leaning forward a bit, he whispered into the thick bush of Aphi's hair where his ear should be, "Thanks, big brother."
"Oh," Eiry said. Alright. So, all hot, red, fiery looking things weren't hot, red, and fiery. He tucked away that mental note and gave her a small smile, "Doesn't mean that you're not a special human. Uncle Isi's special to me and so is Uncle Aphi. Maybe you're special like them, too?"

Natsuki felt the wind fly right out of her chest. She meant no harm only kindness, and yet guilty washed over her like a breaking surf. She took a step back, turning her attention to the shoreline after acknowledging Aphismet's mouthed words by nodding and giving them a little privacy. A brilliant flush colored her cheeks a pinkish red, and she vainly tried hiding them behind her hands.
She wandered down toward the water without looking at the pair of brothers. When Eiry broke her silence, she smiled softly, "Perhaps I am special like Aphismet and Isi," Natsuki said, feeling her smile return. "Soon enough, I will have to take care of a raevan, too. So maybe I can be special to them, Eiry. Maybe you can be friends after my raevan is born." It was a bit premature, but Natsuki loved the positive vibe Eiry gave off. It helped her relax, as the water grazed her feet.

Aph glanced over his shoulder at his brother and smirked. "Here we go!" he announced, not saying a word about Isi's secret thank-you. Jogging forward, Aphi struggled to keep his balance on the sand, heading for the waves. He was still wearing his hoodie, but he figured it would be ok to get it wet. He'd just have to deal with a wet shirt for the rest of the day, but it was preferrable to baring abs in front of a girl who knew him. He'd just be too shy to function otherwise.
When Aph reached the waterside, he slowed to a walk and sloshed in, making sure he had secured his footing before taking another step. He didn't want waves knocking him and Isi over; it would be hard to pick up the boy again with his wet shorts dragging him down. He grinned as the water was pleasantly cool, but not cold. "Natsuki, are you coming?" he called, glancing over to the woman who was conversing with Eiry.
Once Aph reached above hip-level water, he hiked up Isi on his back and said teasingly: "You ready? One, Two, three, GO!" and he dropped the boy into the waves.
Riv, now alone on the beach, sighed once again and wiggled, bending both arms and lacing his fingers together behind his head. This was nice. The only thing that would be nicer would be... Yes, that would be perfect! Sitting up (or rather, floating up), the Scorpion began peeling off the layers of clothes that kept the sun from warming all his skin. Jacket, bracers, bracelets and rings all came off, until he was nothing more than a half-torso with a rune coming out of the tattered flesh below his ribcage, like torn lace. Already, he could feel the sun all over... It was so comfortable! The Raevan stretched contentedly before laying back down, ready for a looooong nap.

As the water splashed up all around Aphi's moving legs, Isi felt the ire in his tense body slip away. The water was so nice, so cool, and refreshing. It was so nice that he had completely forgotten the real world. All he could see was the sparkling clear water, the sand, and the blue sky that seemed to go on forever. So when Aphi began the count-down, Isi was barely coherent to hear the word GO! He felt the man's arms slip out from underneath his knees and with that motion, Isi felt himself drop. It felt eternal in a way, but, like the time he was dropped out the second floor window, it was all too short. With a splash, he was enveloped by the waves and brought back to a wet reality. For a moment, he was relying on his legs to push himself back to the surface, but unfortunately, his legs were hardly strong enough to push against the tide. With a pump of his strong arms, the boy pulled himself up to the surface and gasped in a breath of air, "Aphismet, I wasn't ready!" he shouted, spluttering and laughing at the same time.
"Really? I can't wait to meet the new raevan. Do you think they'll like cardboard boxes? I like cardboard boxes," then he leaned in close to her ear, floating up just high enough so he could whisper, "There are whole entire total big worlds in there!" Then he leaned back and grinned mischievously.
It was then that Aphi splashed in and called to them. Eiry watched them crash into the waves, and almost expected them to drop underneath the water when...Isi did! Eiry gave a choked inhale of surprise as the ocean swallowed up his guardian in the blink of an eye. He was about to jump in and try to save him when Isi bobbed up and began yelling at Aphi. Oh. Nothing was wrong. Peering down at the waves, Eiry screwed his mouth into a frown and dipped his ribbon in...Alright...So, it might be nice...
