.:Cabin Fever:.

Kaimi sat mournfully at the window-seat in her bedroom, staring outside. Fat white snowflakes spiraled their way down from an overcast sky, covering the ground in a pristine white mantle. It was disgusting. The girl sighed and got up, padding across the room to the thermostat. Naomi liked to keep the house a regular temperature that was supposedly both cost-effective and warm-enough-if-you-put-on-a-sweater. The thermostat in Kaimi's room had had the knob removed after Naomi had caught the girl turning the baseboard heater all the way up to 90 degrees. So now she was freezing along with everyone else.

Not to mention that the stupid weather kept her from riding her bike as much because it was slippery and slushy out there, and apparently not safe. Which meant that her school-skipping options were severely limited. So limited in fact that Kaimi had actually found herself attending class. And suprisingly, she had found herself liking it okay. Science was actually fun, the girl had discovered. Math still made no sense but history could be exciting. At least, it could be if they ever covered anything she was interested in. Ancient wars didn't really do much for the girl. Now learning about people such as Ghandi and Mother Theresa... that was another story. Of course, those histories weren't found in a Gaian classroom as much, but Naomi had told Kaimi about a few historical figures from earth.

Kaimi tramped back over to the window seat and let out a giant sigh. Fluffy, her dust bunny, scurried over and made a soft sort of meeping noise at her. The girl reached down and picked the fuzzball up, petting it distractedly as it made contended sounds. Kanunu didn't even raise his head from the foot of her bed. He was curled around Fredward the teddy bear (who seemed to be the gryphkit's sole property now) napping contentedly.

Everyone was content except for her. Mara was watching videos and coloring down in the living room, quiet for once in her life. Naomi was downstairs also, reading one of the many psychology publications that came regularly to her earth office. Kaimi, however, was cranky and restless and bored. Bored bored bored and trapped at home. There HAD to be something better to do than sit around watching the snow fall. The only other problem with sneaking out, besides the frigid weather, was the fact that it got dark so early now. And while the dark didn't frighten Kaimi very much, the prospect of running into uncle Leeward accidently made her decide it would probably be better to just stay at home bored. Though he hadn't come around for awhile. Maybe he and Naomi had gotten over whatever it was they were fighting about. She hoped so. She hoped he would never come back. The memory of the last time she had seen him still haunted her, making her dizzy with a wash of confusing, conflicting emotions.

"This sucks." Kaimi muttered to no one in particular. "Sucks sucks sucks. It really bites the big one." She glanced out the window again. It was still daylight, but barely. If she snuck out, where would she go? Maybe she could just go to the little park down the block. Naomi didn't even care if Kaimi only went that far. That decided it.

"Mooom!" Kaimi shouted, pulling two big thick sweaters out of her closet and pulling them on one by one. "I'm going to the park!" She added a scarf and a pair of gloves and hopped down the stairs.

"Be home by the time it gets dark, dear." Naomi replied. A response Kaimi was used to by now. With a grumble at the wetness and stickiness and coldness of the weather, Kaimi left the house with very little of her customary good cheer. She wasn't sure what was worse... being outside in this tragic weather or being stuck inside with nothing to do.

Lunching and Learning - Kaimi hunts down Chris for her secret santa project.

Dear Diary,

The weather is tragic. What little sun I can see barely has the chance to shine between horrible rain or snow and ice flurries. There is no warmth in the world, everything is settling down to die. Oh, I know that come springtime the world will re-awaken and be green again. I know that underneath it's not really dead, just sleeping.

But still. Winter is a kind of death. In literature thats what it always symbolizes, after all. Winter is a killing, cold and cruel season. But I have to admit that at times it can be very pretty... I just wish it could be pretty and warm. Naomi gets mad when I turn the heater up in my room. She says I should just put on an extra sweater. But I'm wearing two sweaters already and I hate all these clothes! You can't even go barefoot.

I saw Bishop the other day, we're going to have a sleepover on new year's eve. I've missed her and it was nice to spend some time with her. We both have little sisters now, but Mara is doing a lot better and she hasn't bitten me in ages.

I guess one of the good things about winter is that Flora and Ficus are a lot quieter. Maybe they sleep during the cold season too? I know that they're spirits of plants... and plants dont bloom this time of year. So I get a little respite from them, though they're still there. I'm glad though. As obnoxious as they can be, it's better than being alone all the time. And sometimes I feel really alone.

The other thing about winter is that it makes me think of uncle Leeward, and I dont like thinking of him if I can help it. It's been awhile since he's come sniffing around, though. Not since that night when.. well.. we dont need to talk about that. But I know in the corners of my mind that he'll be back. And I know that he is definitely an enemy to this household. I imagine myself battling him, a mighty shield-maiden.

Being cooped up like this is making me crazy. I guess I'll just have to suck it up and deal with freezing my a** off every time I go outside. But you can't dance very well when you're wearing jeans and a parka.

Midnight Marauders - Kaimi and Casca
PostPosted: Wed Dec 17, 2008 12:02 am

.:Long time, no see:.

There was something in the thrust of the hip and the arch of the back that just made her feel good. While she couldn't roll a quarter down to her navel and back up (and she'd spent hours trying) she had managed to perfect the splits which, as far as Kaimi was concerned, was a rather grand achievment. Grinning, she turned to face her bed where Kanunu sat with his usual disintrest. Fine then. Fluffy, her newest furry acquisition, was nestled up in a pile of blankets and discarded clothing also not paying any attention to the girl. Well.

The sun had already set, it got dark so early these days! And Kaimi was supposed to be babysitting Mara while Naomi was out. But Mara was taking a nap and Kaimi was dancing instead. At least, she had been until the doorbell rang. Maybe it would be someone interesting to draw away the chilly wintertime blues. With that thought in mind, Kaimi didn't even bother to change out of the loose skirt and tight top that, on an older girl, would have been terribly revealing but on her gave just the right flow to her movement.

She vaulted down the stairs and skidded to a stop at the front door. Naomi didn't like her to let strangers into the house, so she peered through the window instead. Her heart stopped. A tall, familiar and terrifying figure stood there patiently, dressed in a hooded cloak. He reached out and rang the doorbell again.

Leeward! What to do? The last time he had snuck up on the girl when she was alone had been... well... It was too confusing to even think about. She couldn't let him in the house. She couldn't let him know anyone was even home, although all the lights were on and there was music blaring from her upstairs bedroom. s**t! And then... a wail.

Mara! s**t s**t s**t. Kaimi again vaulted up the stairs, this time fueled by anxiety. Bursting into her little sister's room, she grabbed the girl and immediately put her hand over her mouth. Predictably, Mara tried to bite it. "Shhh!" Kaimi hissed at her. "Mara, you have to be quiet! Theres a bad-guy at the door!"

The little spawn's green eyes narrowed, but her wailing stopped and Kaimi cautiously took her hand away. "What kinda bad-guy?" The little girl wanted to know immediately. It could only be assumed that she was having thoughts of viciously tearing him limb from limb. And somehow, this assumption calmed Kaimi and made her feel braver.

"It's uncle Leeward." She whispered, tensing as the doorbell rang again.

"We dun' have an uncle, stupid whorebitch." Mara replied balefully.

"He's not really our uncle. Thats just what he's called. And anyways, it doesn't matter. He's bad. He wants to hurt Naomi!"

"Mi? He wants to hurt Mi?" This was enough to get the spawn's attention and she bared her teeth and growled. "I kill him first!"

"I know. But you dont have to. Just... just stay quiet. Okay?"

The two girls huddled together on Mara's small bed for what seemed like forever before Kaimi got up the nerve to creep back downstairs and peek out the window again, followed by her little sister carrying a golf club. He was gone.

She breathed a sigh of relief, opening the door to look up and down the street to make sure he really was gone. It didn't even occur to her that, had he been lurking in the snow-covered bushes, this would be a dismally bad move. Luckily, the street was empty. On the doorstep, however, was a sleek black envelope with scrawling gold writing across it bearing Naomi's name.

This could not be good. "Mara..." For the other girl had definitely seen Kaimi pick up the envelope. "Don't tell Naomi about any of this, okay? It'll be our little secret."

"Our secret, whorebitch." Mara agreed, her eyes wide as she watched Kaimi go over to the fireplace and toss the envelope into the flames.

Sighing, Kaimi settled the two of them down on the couch and put on Lilo and Stitch, one of a very select few movies the two girls could agree to watch together. Kaimi adoring Lilo and Mara relating very well with Stitch. What had he wanted? Why had he come back? She tried to get into the movie, but was distracted. Visits from uncle Leeward never boded well.

.:Merry Christmas!:.

The tree glimmered softly in the dark, lightless morning. It was too early for the sun to be up, after all. Two sets of slippered feet crept down the stairs. Two fluffy robes, one blue with pictures of cups of cocoa and marshmallows and one purple with yellow ducks on it trailed down the stairs. Outside, a light snow fell in fat, indolent flakes. Two girls, one dark and exotic, one petite and blonde, snuck into the living room as silently as possible.

"Santa camed!" Mara whispered loudly, grinning broadly at her sister. There was an expanse of presents under the tree, ribbons and bows glistening.

"Shh!" Kaimi hissed, though she was grinning hugely. "Lets see whats in our stockings! Naomi wont mind if we look in our stockings before she wakes up."

The girls had been strictly forbidden to wake Naomi before six. They had managed to wait until about five-thirty before excitement drove them downstairs. Two brand-new stockings hung on the mantel. They'd been a gift from grandma, a woman the girls still hadn't met. But they were beautiful, hand-embroidered. Kaimi's had a manger scene with calm looking donkeys and sheep. Mara's had an angel, hands outspread in a benediction. Both were bulging with goodies. Carefully, Kaimi took the stockings down from the mantle and the two girls sat in front of the tree.

Toothbrushes, oranges with cloves stuck in them, candies... Mara got a couple of small toy cars and a tiny water-gun. Kaimi got unusually colored nail-polish and body wash that smelled like coconuts. The two girls were giggling under their breath, running the little toy cars around on the floor (though Mara was inclined to try and crash them) when they heard footsteps on the stairs.

Naomi joined her two daughters, smiling. She hadn't been able to sleep either. It had been years and years since she'd been excited about christmas. After Holly had dissapeared, so had christmas. None of them had the motivation or spirit to give gifts. They had all been plunged into mourning. But this year, she had two little girls all her own and it was their first christmas together! She couldn't help but be excited by it. She remembered, a little painfully, the joy and excitement she'd felt as a child. The jolt in the stomach when you looked at the empty cookie plate, proof positive that Santa had stopped by. "Merry christmas, girls." She said, smiling. "Are you ready to open your presents?"

"Yes!"
"Yes!"

Came the replies. The rest of the morning was a blur of wrapping paper, homemade cinnamon rolls, laughter and intrumental carols playing in the background. Kaimi had squealed over new tassles and a bell for her bicycle and had recieved a set of zils and a huge silk scarf spangled with gold for her dancing. Mara had gotten a teddy bear and lots of new clothes. She seemed pleased, but there was something a little subdued as the last gift was given and the tree lay empty.

"I think theres one more thing we're missing here..." Naomi said, winking at her oldest daughter.

"Oh! Yes!" Kaimi exclaimed. "I definitely think something is missing here." She got to her feet and left the room, a skip in her step. Mara frowned as she watched her sister dissapear. She regarded Naomi suspiciously too. She didn't like it when people winked... it always meant she was being left out of something. Soon, though, Kaimi was back with a long rope.

"Here, Mara!" Kaimi grinned, giving her sister the rope that stretched all the way out of the living room in the direction of the kitchen. "Give it a nice little tug. Be gentle, now!"

The spawn took the rope and pulled on it. There was a bit of resistance, so she pulled a little harder. Then, all of the sudden, the rope gave and a small ball of fur burst into the room, barrelling straight to Mara and leaping on the little girl.

"Puppy!" Mara shrieked joyfully around the licking tongue. "Puppy! Really?"

"Really." Naomi said. "Since you really wanted one so much. You'll have to take good care of her, you know."

"I helped pick her out!" Kaimi was quick to add. She'd been the one to choose the furball that had the brightest eyes and the sharpest teeth. The one that seemed the most full of mischief, thinking it would be a good fit for her little sister.

"What are you going to call her, Mara?" Naomi asked with a smile.

"Gift." Mara beamed as the puppy chewed on her fingers. She could always chew back later. "Her name is Gift."

. razz art One:.

A pineapple express had granted Kaimi a brief respite from the freezing cold and the wretched snow. Althought it was wet and drippy outside, at least she could manage without a hundred sweaters on. Which was good, since Kaimi had recently found herself spending a lot of time online. Namely, wikipedia and google. And she had discovered something that looked to be absolutely fascinating.

Initially she'd been looking up mantras. Ficus and Flora could sing them in her head, but she'd also wanted words to look at to make sure she was doing it right. She was, in fact, getting the meditation thing down fairly well she thought. Though it was hard, especially now that Mara had grown. Her sister liked to listen to horrid music and she turned it up LOUD. Loud enough to shake the entire house.

It was this screaming, screeching sound that had driven Kaimi outside today. She was clutching a broom handle, the ends of which she had duct taped small weights to. Fire Dancing. Oh, it would marvelous! Like many people, Kaimi was particularly drawn to the poi. But swinging flaming chains around her head seemed certain to get her into big trouble, especially since she didn't really know what she was doing. So she'd decided to start with the staves, which were sticks with flaming ends. They were supposed to be easier to learn. And you were supposed to start practicing by using staves that weren't lit. Kaimi, being broke, had fashioned her own practice set out of junk she'd pirated from around the house.

The sky was grey and getting darker, but the girl hardly noticed. She took the weighted stick and began twirling it slowly, awkwardly. She hadn't been at it for long before she sensed someone nearby. The hairs on the back of her neck prickled and she turned slowly, afraid that it was Uncle Leeward. It wasn't.

A pale-skinned girl with dark and light hair was standing at the fence, watching her practice. Naturally friendly and seeing no threat, Kaimi grinned and trotted over to the fence. "Heya." She said, "I'm Kaimi. Who're you?" Meaning, she hadn't seen the girl in the neighborhood before.

The strange girl's eyes widened and she looked rather like a startled deer, ready to run off at a moment's notice. "They call me Galleai." She said, smiling a smile that didn't look entirely comfortable on her face.

"It's good to meet you, Galleai. D'you want to come in for some cocoa?" Sure, it wasn't freezing out right this second, but cocoa was always good anyways. And Kaimi had a habit of befriending every stray she came across. Galleai smiled again, a little more comfortable, and nodded.

Opening the gate, Kaimi let the other girl into the yard and then into the house. "You sit there." She said importantly. "I'll make the cocoa. I've never seen you around here. Where do you live?"

"I'm not sure."

"You dont know where you live?" Kaimi asked, horrified. "You do have a home, don't you?"

"Oh, yes." And a startlingly infectious little giggle escaped Galleai's lips. "I just don't remember what the street address is. I get kind of lost, we live a long ways out. But my daddy usually finds me if I'm gone too long and can't find my way back home."

"Oh." Kaimi felt relieved, but also kind of unnerved. What kind of kid didn't know where they lived and then wandered off, trusting on a parent to come and get them eventually? Galleai had headwings like Kaimi's best friend Bishop, but Kaimi determined immediately that Bishop was a whole lot smarter than this girl. "Well, you can wait here if you want." She'd gently boiled some milk and added chocolate to it, and now she poured the resulting mixture into two mugs.

"Oh!" Galleai responded upon her first sip. "This is really good! I've... what is it?"

"It's chocolate." Kaimi said, feeling more and more like she was in a twilight zone episode. What kid didn't know what hot chocolate was? There was something very, very wrong here. Unfortunately, they were about to get a whole lot wronger.

In retrospect, Kaimi could barely remember the order of events, everything seemed to happen at once and with a startling amount of confusion. The two girls had been drinking their cocoa companionably. Galleai had been looking around and spotted their christmas family photo. She'd dropped her cocoa and apologized. Kaimi had said it was okay and gone to get paper towels while Galleai stood there and stared at the photo.

When she'd come back with a wad of towels, Leeward was standing in the middle of the room, Galleai clutching his hand and looking confused. Kaimi's eyes had widened and she'd dropped her cleaning supplies.

"Hello Kaimi." Leeward had said in that voice that made her feel dizzy.

Kaimi screamed.

After that, everything had gone black.

(reference part one and a half in Galleai's journal)

. razz art Two:.

The house looked as if it had been ransacked, though a lot of that was Mara's doing. Naomi had arrived home from work as usual, expecting her girls to be snacking or watching television or bickering as they so often did. Instead, she found all the doors open, papers and books strewn everywhere, furniture overturned... it was a nightmare. And standing in the middle of it was a fuming, crying Mara. A chill went straight through Naomi's bones. Mara simply didn't cry. There was something very, very wrong here.

"Mara! Whats wrong? What on earth happened? Wheres Kaimi?" Kaimi was supposed to have been babysitting.

"Ka!" Mara wailed, running to Naomi and clinging to her. "She's g-gone!"

"Gone?" Everything went cold. "Gone where?"

"H-he took her!" Mara gulped. "The ba-bad man took her!"

"What man?" Panic was racing inside of the women as she struggled to keep herself calm. She didn't really need to ask who it had been that had taken her daughter. She already knew.

"L-L-Leeward!" Mara wailed, hiccuping.

Naomi gritted her teeth. Leeward had finally made his move. She simply didn't understand it, she'd left the trail for her sister cold. She hadn't been doing anything that obviously constituted searching. Why had he stolen her daughter? Fear and anger washed over the woman. She didn't know if he'd come back for Mara or not, but she wasn't willing to risk it. Someone had to stay at the house, though, in case by some miracle Kaimi returned.

"Come on, darling." Even though she was much bigger and rather spiny, Naomi lifted Mara into her arms and carried her into the kitchen where she proceeded to warm some milk in an attempt to find the girl. "Where did you get all these scratches?"

"I t-tried to stop him, Mi. I really did, but he was stronger and his teeth were sharper than mine." Mara gulped for air, anxiety and fear making it hard for her to breath. "Kaimi had fainted and the other girl w-was j-just standing there. And he pi-picked up K-Kaimi and then I tried to get her b-back. B-but he was t-too strong!"

"Oh, darling, it's okay. You tried very hard to protect your sister, though it was a dangerous thing to do." Naomi paused, then. "What other girl?"

"K-Kaimi had a friend over." Mara took the warmed milk and sipped, starting to calm now that Naomi was home and she wasn't all alone and frightened anymore. Now, anger was starting to boil slowly under the little spawn's skin. Not the quick, fiery burst of passion that she was accustomed to, but a slow simmering fury that would last and last and last until justice was served.

"Who was this friend?" Naomi asked, brow wrinkling. But Mara only shook her head. She didn't know.

"Alright, sweetie. You just stay here, I'm going to make a few phone calls, okay? Then we're going to pack a little bag and you're going to go and visit a friend of mommy's for a couple of days while the police look for Kaimi."

"I wanna stay with YOOOU!" Mara wailed, starting up again.

"I know, darling. But it may not be safe. I promise you, it will only be a few days. You can go stay with Granny and Pop-Pop. You'll like them very much, I'm sure. And your grandma has been wanting very much to meet you. You'll even get to go to earth!"

"E-earth?" It was a small consolation, but it was enough to quiet Mara. "Okay, Mi." She said in an uncharacteristically subdued voice.

Five minutes later, Mara was asleep on the couch and Naomi was frantically calling everyone she could think of to see if anyone had seen Kaimi. She knew that nobody would have, but still. She had to try.
