She couldn't sleep. There was something tugging at her consciousness, but for once it wasn't the voices in her head. A light snow fell outside and the moon reflecting off the ground made it seem almost as bright as day. Definitely too bright to sleep.

So Kaimi had pulled on a couple heavy sweaters and a coat and a scarf and anything else she could think of to ward off the unbearable chill and snuck out of the house. There was a playground in the neighborhood that wasn't far and she made her way there, feeling rather introspective.

Sitting on one of the swings, she moved gently, tilting her face up to watch the snow come down. She hated the cold, but there was something achingly beautiful about winter.

It was still early days yet: it wasn't apparent whether or not the snow would stick, or simply gather in little piles at various ends of the playground before melting away like it had never even been there. The moon was close to full, and the snow ate up the silence -- it was nearly breathlessly quiet all around.

There was a slight rustle eventually -- first it was far-off, but then as it was closer there was a very nearly silent gliding sound, the only real noise in it the wind catching fabric. With an abrupt set-down, a boy -- it looked kind of like a boy -- landed on the nearby slide, claws catching into the metal (which scarred and warped immediately under his grip) as he steadied himself. Apart from the wings and the horns and the claws and the tail he looked pretty normal; he was wearing jeans and a t-shirt, and a scarf, the only concession to the cold. And he was looking at Kaimi.

"Hey," he said, unruffled, "are you lost, honey?"

Unruffled was not a good description of Kaimi when not only did a figure alight on the slide, but it talked to her. She'd been so caught up in her own thoughts that she hadn't heard his silent entry. "Eep!" Was what she managed, falling backward off the swing.

On hands and knees, she crawled over to the slide, golden eyes wide and glowing. "Wh...No.. I..." She stood up and brushed the snow off of herself, regaining her composure. "No, I'm not lost." Trying a little smile, she found it still worked and took heart. "You suprised me, though." The smile got a little bigger.

Powder snow was accumulating in the boy's hair; he didn't seem to mind it, and oddly enough, it didn't melt on his skin. He cocked his head at Kaimi and alighted down off the slide, and her smile was met with a calm one from the boy; he shoved his claws thumbs into his belt loops. "Sure?" he said. "Hanging around a playground in the middle of the night -- in the snow -- could come to some grief, cherie. Murderers and stuff."

One of his brows raised at her, and he arched his wings up: standing fall, they acted as a good sort of umbrella over them both, held taut against the snow. "You look like a warm-weather girl, am I right? Should be inside."

Kaimi looked up at the canopy of wings and gratefully sidled closer to Casca, the scent of tropical flowers spreading through the air. "Oh... well, I couldn't sleep. So I snuck out." She looked up at him. "You're not planning on murdering me, are you?" Naive to a fault sometimes, as far as Kaimi was concerned there was only one person in the world who might do her harm. But uncle Leeward wasn't here, so she felt safe enough.

The scent of flowers was weirdly out of place in the chill winter air: the smell was sweet and fragrant and vaguely tropical. He took a good long look at her, sizing her up -- as Casca generally did -- according to his own tastes: she was pretty, he thought, genuinely pretty, not ultimately chic but pretty nonetheless. Wholesomely pretty in an exotic kind of way.

Which made it more okay to smile at her. (Cascati was shallow.)

"Hey, no," he said, gentlemanly holding a wing out over her head. "You're safe with me, ma petite. I was actually going to ask if you wanted a walk home -- city's dangerous."

She also looked vaguely familiar. He held out a clawed hand. "Uh, we met before? Casca Naborn, at your service, mademoiselle."

"Oh!" Kaimi blushed a little. She'd only really met one boy before, and Merroth had NOT been as sweet as Casca. So she was genuinely pleased and flattered at the gargoyle's attitude. Her eyes sized him up as well. "I think I saw you at the thanksgiving party. I brought sweet potatoes." Her smile would have been flirtatious if Kaimi had had any concept whatsoever of what flirting was. "My name is Kaimi." She shook his hand, her eyes lingering on his wings. "You can really fly?"

"Not exactly," he admitted, brushing a few specks of snow off his shirt. "I can glide on air currents -- I can't flap my wings and fly like a bird. But, yes, my wings work."

The thanksgiving party rang a bell: she had been one of the ones clustered around the other girls, as he'd mainly chatted to Carlisle. "Aren't you cold, cherie? Huh. I'm surprised those flowers of yours aren't getting, you know... normal flowery droopy."

Kaimi had been momentarily caught up by the thought of gliding along air currents and it took her a second to bring her mind back to the conversation at hand. "Oh... I'm freezing." Even with the two sweaters and the coat. "I hate this time of year." She said cheerfully. "But my flowers never droop or wilt." As if this was totally normal. "I just live a couple of blocks that way." She added, gesturing vaguely.

"I see," said Casca lightly, "that's clear. Somewhere that way." It was obviously teasing, though, and his voice didn't sound too unkind; and he scratched at his curls contemplatively. "You want to walk it, darling? I can get you there quicker if you give me directions and then I won't have to spend time worrying that you'll appear in a police report tomorrow. My mum brought me up that way."

Kaimi laughed a little. Directions had never been something she'd ever really concerned herself with. "Two blocks down and then left on Tamarack. We're the third house on the left." It was probably bad that she didn't remember her house number. It had just... never seemed important. "Sounds like your mom brought you up pretty well." She added a little wryly. Might as well head home, she couldn't feel her toes anymore and despite the layers and layers of clothes she felt chilled to the core. Perhaps it would be better to just stay in her room the next time she was feeling all introspective. At least then she'd have cocoa.

The boy in front of her sighed somewhat melodramatically, as though that was some kind of odyssey instead of three minutes' walk. "In this cold?" he said. "It's snowing harder. You'll be a popsicle. Take my route, mademoiselle."

Casca immediately stepped up at the holding bar of the swing set and up to the top; he crouched down, offering her his big clawed hand, before it became abundantly clear he thought it was better that they fly there. He didn't look concerned about taking a passenger.

"Unless you're scared of heights," he said.

Golden eyes got wide as saucers and the floral scent in the air increased dramatically. "Really?" She jumped up and down a little and clapped her hands together. "You'll fly me home?" She'd been too shy to ask him if he would do something like that, so the offer was like Christmas come early. Kaimi had only ever dreamt of something like this. She took his hand and beamed at him. "I'm not afraid of heights!" She assured him.

The gargoyle immediately reached down to lift her up -- one hand under her other arm as well, so that he didn't accidentally yank it out the socket. There was no way to carry her on his back: so he ended up pulling her unblinkingly into a sort of half-carrying, half fireman's hold, with one of Kaimi's arms around his neck. It was jolting at first when he made a running leap off the swingset, rebounded off into a tree and took off from there; colder, too, as he opened his wings again like the sound of a leathery umbrella and they were airborne -- the rushing wind went all through them, but for a moment the suburbs were laid out in front of them like some kind of frosted picture. They climbed higher: the roofs looked a bit like the roofs of some tiny model town.

"Two blocks down," he said, and the gliding motion was much smoother than a flapping one would have been. The wind just kept buffeting them around a little. "You'll need to navigate, cherie."

Supressing a little squeak as they took off, Kaimi clung to the gargoyle, shivering as the cold increased. "Wow..." She said quietly. "I had no idea it was so pretty all the way up here." Her grin was big enough to split her face in half. "This is so cool! You're so lucky you can do this all the time." She gazed down at the sugar-coated rooftops, trying to determine which was the right one. "There, I think." She said, pointing.
