-[Growth Quest]-
Quote:
Sueno has so far been an innocent and almost 'untouchable' girl. Focused on her farm, her family, and her animals, she has thought of little else and been largely unconcerned with matters in the field of romance or attraction. But there comes a time in nearly every growing adolescent's life that others around oneself begin to look appealing in other ways than simple friendship. How will Sueno react the first time such a distraction makes its way into her life? Is someone else the instigator - a brave potential suitor making his interests known after long having kept them quiet? Or is it Sueno who simply starts to notice someone in a way she never did before? How does she deal with it, and do her animals and her budding profession come first? Or does romance and teenage fancy become a new sort of 'chasing' and 'taming' game to add to her repertoire of interests?

It’d been a while since Sueno had gone into the near town; busy with helping on the farm, getting the barn all set and ready for her Gazini and future beasts, and learning at Fillarin’s ranch didn’t leave a lot of time to go to the local school or market. But today she found herself with some free time and a need to go clothes shopping. Her dresser was filled with, she sighed, old clothing. Clothes she wore to work in and clothes wore to clean in, battered and stained though still slightly cute. And all were getting to be too small.
“Ah’ve been working hard, Ah can take a break.” She told herself with a smile. In the box hidden under her bed lay the small stash of treasure she’d gathered over the years. The gems (dragon tears Fillarin called them) she’d gotten as a gift would make perfect for trading if she really went on a shopping spree! They were supposed to fund the building of her ranch… but she needed some new clothes!
To use them or not too…she sighed. All her other treasures couldn’t be traded. The tailors who made clothes she really liked were a rather snobby bunch and wanted gems or coins, not barter. Maybe I should go and find a new tailor... not like I have to stick with those expensive ones, I can find somebody new… someone who does take barter, like those extra tomatoes, onions, peppers and the squash my garden put out. She thought with a smile as she recalled the huge bounty that lay in the pantry. That was hers to deal with, most of the time she just gave them to her parents, they dried and saved the extras; but perhaps she should use them as trade goods since she had too many. And next year I’ll have apple crops to trade! Though… I know Ma and I will have a blast making dried apples, canning them for winter, and all the baked goods we can make!
She put on her last remaining good dress (which meant cute and something she wouldn’t go to work in) and sighed at the short length. Her body was growing up and she hadn’t been buying clothes to keep up with it!
“Gotta go put on shorts….” She muttered to herself in disgust. Did nothing but her work clothes fit any more? And that just because they were hand me downs from the ranch hands and her brother. Ick! A girl just cannot have only used boy clothes!
Her mind made up, she pulled out one of the tears and headed down to talk with her mother.
“Hey Ma, can Ah go into town and go clothes shopping? All my clothes are getting too small or ratty.”
Liopa looked over at her daughter. “That sounds fun. Do you need some coins?”
“Um… Maybe. Got this, but Ah was thinking of going to a different tailor than the one we usually go to. Find someone Ah can trade all those extra veggies my garden put out.”
“Oh no! You can’t use the dragon tear!” Liopa said, aghast at the idea. “That’s far too expensive and precious! You could buy outfits for a lifetime with that one! Keep it for emergencies or something more expensive than clothes.” She set aside her sewing and bustled out of the room into the pantry. “Take the vegetables instead. Also herbs! I know of a new tailor in town, Neema says they’re decent and accept produce unlike the others. Why you have a shop in a farming community and don’t take produce as trade goods I don’t know! But some people just like to put on airs and---”
“Yeah Ma, Ah get it! No need to start that rant…” Sueno said with a laugh. Her mother loved to gossip and rant about the inadequacies of money. Trading goods was better in her eyes. But goods can spoil while coins don’t, so it was useful to have both. That was Sueno’s thought on the matter.
“Take the wagon up to Fillarin’s!” Her mother called over her shoulder. “That nice boy Ràild’s brother came up to visit him. Why not have them take you to the village? That way you can carry all the gear… and I know Ràild mentioned wanting to purchase some things!”
“Yes Ma.” Sueno said with a sigh. Shopping with a boy? Her brother was not the best shopping companion. He always said everything was cute and no real opinions! Would Ràild or his brother be any better?
Loading up the wagon, she hitched her parent’s old Hastar up (proud that she could do it by herself now) and headed out.
-----
“Ràild!” Sueno called and waved from her perch on the wagon seat at the older boy who was rounding up a small herd of Sherons. He gave a brief wave but didn’t call out; he needed to finish his job.
Sueno parked the wagon and loosened the traces to let the Hastar relax, eat some grass and drink from the trough. As she waited one of the other work hands, a boy she hadn’t really talked to other than a few times came over.
~~~ His View~~~
He’d been out here on his uncle’s ranch for a few years now. After getting caught on the rougher side of town in activities his parent’s hadn’t approved of, they’d had decided that living at his uncle’s ranch for a few years would keep him from going down the wrong path. Hard to go wrong out here: there wasn’t much to do! So he spent most of his time at the school, learning and showing off to the locals. In the afternoons though, he was forced to return to the farm and help. Normally he disliked helping, but lately he found more reason to be at the ranch than away.
There was this girl, a few years younger than him, from the nearby farm that had started to arrive for lessons. She was absolutely adorable! Always had a smile and a “Good Mornin’,” for him when he saw her. The accent? Cute, where the other’s bumpkin ways irritated him. But he never got a lot of time to chat with her. Fillarin kept him away; he was certain his uncle keeping him away! He had been watching her though, not in a creepy way, but he’d see her as he was going from barn to barn and would stop to watch. He found himself looking forward to the morning smile and wave, and felt disappointed when he didn’t see her… or when she’d come back after a month’s absence and there’d been no smile.
He thought she was like a little sister he could have had. Then he’d gone home for a while; visited the city, seen his parents, met up with old friends. He’d had an old girlfriend, but he felt nothing when he saw her. In fact, he found himself looking forward to heading back to his uncle’s! He loved the city life, the liveliness and clash of sights, sounds, smells! But there was that smile that wasn’t there…
So he headed back, much to his parent’s happy disbelief. And then, when he’d come back and saw her sitting on a wagon, wearing that cute dress like top and shorts underneath, his heart skipped a beat. He found himself nervous, and very much away of the bare arms and legs being shown. That wasn’t, he realized, a little girl anymore. Her curves weren’t impressive, she was just beginning to become a woman, but the slightly too small dress and shorts clung and showed that she wasn’t a child anymore.
She’s not a kid sister, and I’m… I think I’m in love. He realized with a flush as a wind rustled her white hair, causing her to grin that beautiful smile and run a hand through it to wrap it up into a loose braid. His reaction upon seeing her and watching her watch that broad bloke Ràild as he rounded up some animals made him stop and think. He liked her, loved her he was convinced, why else would a simple smile affect him so much? Yet he’d never said more than a few sentences to her! And Ràild was by her side a lot…. And she was watching him right now….
Gathering his courage, he approached. It was time to change that!
~~~
Sueno, waiting for her friend and mentor Ràild to finish, was rather bored. Watching Ràild in the saddle wasn’t that interesting. She wondered why, after all she knew he was attractive. Maybe it was his age? Though that hadn’t stopped her and her old school mates when they were younger! In fact, she realized, she hadn’t had a crush or talked about love at all ever since she stopped going to school and started her training! Maybe I’ve been too busy? She thought as she noticed someone approaching.
Looking over she smiled and waved as she did to all the ranch hands. It was Fillarin’s nephew, the city boy. What was his name again….. Oh yeah! Lyklor!
“Mornin’ Lyklor.” She said, glad to have someone to talk to while she waited.
He gave a grin and leaned against the wagon as he responded. “Morning Sueno.” He was of average height, with a lean build and tanned skin from working on the ranch. A nice set of sharp green eyes was set in an angular face topped with straight silver hair that stood out against the tanned skin. Attractive enough, though he was all angles and sharp to her eyes. Fillarin had warned her of him, said he’d been sent out here by his parent’s to get him away from the wrong sort. He was, she thought, nice enough. At least he’d always said hi and smiled at her.
“You’re all dolled up today. Looking lovely too. Going somewhere?” He asked, perfectly confident in himself. Sueno was rather surprised, he’d never really talked to her before…. But compliments were nice! Especially considering these clothes were old and a little too small….
“Thank ye, but this ain’t dolled up!” She said with a flashing grin. “Gonna go clothes shopping. All Ah’ve got are old clothes… this is the last of the good ones that fit.”
Clothes shopping, he thought. Well, he had always seen her wearing work outfits, though she’s always looked cute in them. And of course, girls always loved to shop….
“Well.” He drawled. “You may say it’s not dolled up, but it’s still cute and looking good on you. Mind if I join you?”
Sueno felt a small surge of happiness, still cute? Good! She always had thought she had good taste in clothes! Should he come along? He wasn’t a stranger but…
“Ye sure? Might not be too fun. Just gonna buy stuff.”
“Wouldn’t ask if I wasn’t sure.” He said as he straightened up. “Besides, I want to get to know you better. I know I love seeing your smile and look forward to seeing it when we meet. Now I want to get to know the girl behind the smile.” Sueno found herself blushing at the very forward approach. She put a hand to her warmed cheeks.
“Oh my! Well, when ye put it like that, how’s a girl supposed to say no? Ye don’t mind if I ask Ràild first though? Ma says his brother’s in town and since Ah’m going that way Ah should offer them a ride.”
“Not at all!” He grinned, happy that A) she’d accepted and B) she wasn’t waiting for Ràild because she wanted to go shopping with him.
Ràild, it turned out, was taking his brother fishing since they’d gone to town yesterday. That left Sueno alone with Lyklor in the wagon ride there. Not that he had anything planned. Lyklor just wanted to get to know her more. And let her get to know him as more than just a ranch hand. He kept the conversation on innocent things; what she liked, her hobbies, her life so far. He told her what growing up in the city had been like… though that led to a bit of an awkward moment.
“So... what was yer uncle meaning by ‘ fell in with the bad sort’?” Sueno asked him.
“Ahh...” He sighed and ran his hand through his hair. “I made friends who were in gangs. They… stole stuff… that sort of thing.”
Her eyes narrowed, “Did ye-?”
“NO!” He said quickly. “At least, I hadn’t yet. Though they were starting to press. It’s why I didn’t complain too much when my folks sent me here.”
Sueno relaxed. “Ah thought so. Yer too nice.” He looked startled.
“You.. you really think that?” He was surprised, she barely knew him!
“Mh-hmm. If ye was really a bad apple then ye wouldn’t actually help out at the ranch!” She looked up and gave him a big smile. “Ah always see ye workin’ hard so ye can’t be that bad! Plus ye always say hi.”
He blushed and looked away, heart skipping a beat at the smile. Why was she so darned cute?!
Turning back with a grin, he asked; “So… you’ve noticed me? Cause..” Sueno could practically see the ‘to heck with it’ that passed through his mind.
“Because I’ve definitely noticed you… And.. Was wondering if you’d be willing to see me as more than … a ranch hand or friend. I like you Sueno. A lot.”
Sueno blinked then blushed. He’d just confessed! That was…. well, new! She and the other girls (when she’d still gone to school) had often talked about romance and sweethearts in the ways of small females everywhere… but she’d never thought she’d be on the receiving end!
Those piercing green eyes watched her and she couldn’t say no. But… at the same time…. she felt like she couldn’t say yes either.
“Um… I…” Her reaction was not what he’d expected and it hurt when there was no big smile or anything.
“No it’s fine.” He said with a sigh and his shoulders dropped. “I kinda sprang that on you… You don’t have to answer right now…”
“Oh no! That’s not… I’m not saying no.” She said. Why not she thought. I may be busy with my learning.. and planning to leave for a month on and off to learn from hunters on how to catch and tame wild beasts, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t try out a relationship!
“But… Ah’m gonna to be leaving soon, and going away fer a month or so then be back.. We could… try.. Ah mean.” She blushed and gave a shy smile. “Ah wouldn't mind getting to know you better….”
The happy look on his face made her feel better. He wasn’t bad looking...a little slim… and he seemed real nice. She could always try! No harm in trying right? And she was 14 and never had a boyfriend! Rather sad that, she thought.
Lyklor’s face had a large happy grin on his face; she’d said yes!
“Ah, thank.. I mean…ah” He stuttered and looked foolish. Cute, thought Sueno.
“Ah’ll warn ye though, Ah’ve got plans fer my ranch and learning about the wilder beasties an all that. That’s why Ah’m gonna be leaving, gonna go out and actually go with hunters to see how they work.”
Lyklor shook the gleeful cloud away and concentrated back on her.
“Oh.. that sounds rather dangerous. What kind of beasts?”
“The big ones! Ones Ah can teach to guard, be mounts, and companions fer warriors and hunters.”
He thought for a moment, that was.. a lot different than the cute and adorable girl he’d watched… but it just added spice. And she was following what she wanted to do, something he could admire. He didn’t really have a plan for the future…
“Mm, you’ll have to tell me about them.. and maybe I can join you in some of them… be nice to learn more about ranching and hunting.”
Sueno looked at him, “Do ye have a dream? Ye know mine now.”
“Um.. no. Not really.” He looked off into the distance and thought. “When I was in the city… there was always friends and school… I never thought more than a week in advanced.”
“Ah hope ye can find a dream.” Sueno said seriously. “Dreams make the work worth it. Gives ye a goal to strive for. Living without a dream isn’t living Ah think.”
He looked at her and nodded, “That’s deep. And I can see your point.” He grinned, “I didn’t know you’d thought about these…. never wondered really... Now I do. What other secrets and deep thoughts do you have?” He teased, but half seriously. Sueno giggled and tossed her small braid over her shoulder.
“Ye’ll have to wait fer those!”
I’m glad I approached her, he thought as he changed to subject to where she wanted to go shopping since the town was just ahead. There’s some steel in her, I never would have known if all I did was look from a distance…. Pity about her plans to move around, but I’ll join her on those. I have after all been trained to fight… and the hunts can teach me how to hunt as much as it does her.
Sueno was wondering about him, what did he like to do, what was he like really? She knew only a bit, but the mystery only added to the excitement of having a boyfriend. And, she realized, an almost first date! Or, she grinned when he asked her if she’d like to grab lunch while they were here, a real first date.
He works at the same ranch I do, and doesn’t seem to mind that I have plans that will take me elsewhere… I wonder if it will work out? Not that I want to settle down with a boy any time soon! I’ve got my whole life ahead of me! But… this can be practice… and if he’s a real keeper.. well, we’ll see. Wonder how my family will react?
