Rural Adventures!
-[Solo]- Congratulation Gifts Sueno get's lots of goodies

Upon her successful training of the Hastar Fillarin gave her a box full of stuff. “This here’s a gift from us.” He said as he ruffled her hair. She swatted his hand away in annoyance: her hair frizzed when he did that! Curious she opened it to see a glitter of small jewels tied with feathers, some books (ik, books!), a paper that gave her a sense of power and some gear.
Curious she picked up each and every item, touching it, shaking I; what did they do? The rope and climbing gear were easy to figure out: gifts to help her get at creatures in difficult places! She thought with a happy smile. The leather case with small slim not needles in it confused her though. She held it up and looked quizzically at her teacher.

“Ah… that’s..” he looked at his son. “It’s a kit to help ye pick locks,” Oran, Fillarin’s eldest son said with a wide grin. “Jest in case ye ever get locked out.. or need to get in.” He said. Fillarin sighed and shook his head. The lad’s heart was in the right place but still!

Sueno nodded, useful thing that! She was always losing her keyes to the barn! Now the jewels. “What do these do?”

“Taming jewels.” Was the cryptic response from Ràild Sailcirc, a farm hand that Sueno was working with on training. “They help one calm and train creatures.”

“Oh! Thankee! That’ll be useful!” And it would; especially with wild animals. If a semi tamed Hastar took her three tries what would a wild animal do? Magic was not cheating, she thought, it is merely using your resources to make the taming process as harmless as possible!

“What’s this paper for? It’s got magic in it!” Sueno asked as she held up the talisman.

“That’s a talisman for good luck,” Fillarin said. “And the books are various things we feel may come of use to you one day! Even if you don’t like books too much. They’re spell books, each one teaches you how to cast certain magics.”

“Ohh.” Spell books! That was different than musty ol' tomes that bore her! She smiled upa dn thanked her teacher and friends. So nice to be loved!

-[Solo- Special]- Learn to Ride.
Rancher Training Solo
words: 723

Ràild knocked on the door to Sueno’s farm house early in the morning. “Here to talk with your parents,” he said with a small smile when she opened the door. “Bout training.”

“Okay, come on in.” Sueno replied.

“Guardians still here?”

“Nah, they’re out patrolling Ah think.”

“Ye not scared or anything?” He asked, curious. “I’ve seen Oblivinites before, the Guardians have some in the southern section usually to help sniff out smugglers. But Raemos’s the first one you met right?”

“He is.. he’s weird.” Sueno said with a scrunch of her nose. “Empty holes in his head gets a little scary after a bit, but he helps out at the farm, knows magic… Pa says he’s welcome and he’s not evil. I know that.”

Ràild smiled. “Nah. They don’t let evil into the Guardians! Pretty good with animals too.”

Veran looked up from breakfast and smiled at the older boy. “Mornin’ Ràild. What brings ye here?”

“Sue’s training. Fillarin’s letting me do most of it for the Hastar it looks like. Going to start teaching her to ride a Hastar so that way she can teach her Gazini to carry her.” He said with a grin.”For that, she needs to wear different clothes.”

“What’s wrong with what I’ve got on?” Sueno asked with a pout. It was her cute set of overalls and she rather liked them!

“Ye’ll be flying into the mud a lot today.” Vernan said with a chuckle. “Better not wear yer cute stuff!”

She looked down at her clothes. “Guess so.” She said with a sigh.

“Here’s boots.” Ràild said with a grin. “Riding boots. They’re slightly different but don’t put them on till we’re there. It hurts to walk in them for too long.”

This was shaping up to be a bit worse than what she thought learning to ride would be like. Sueno thought as she changed. Flying into the mud? Boots you don’t walk in?

Ràild, after they got to Fillarin’s farm and set up in a pen, brought in an old Hastar.

“This one is Feral. Dunno why they call her that. She’s the sweetest Hastar this ranch’s got. She’s taught most of us how to ride.” He said with a smile as Sueno came over to get acquainted. “She shouldn’t throw you unless you hurt her.”

“Oh good.” Sueno said. “Cause that sounds painful.”

“it is. And you’ve got to beware of the Hastars hooves. They often attack when you’re down.”
That sounded.. dreadful. But Hastars were predators, the common mount of a warrior who needed something that could carry him and fight. Those instincts where needed. And ones she wanted to keep if she was to train Hastars for her brother!

As she learned to ride, strengthened her muscles, and the signals to give the Hastar, Ràild went over tips and lessons on training Hastars. That night she wrote the main points in her Ranch Journal so she would remember them.

  • Don’t scare them and go slowly. Introduce one thing at a time and do it slowly. If you threw too much at a Hastar you’d end up pushing them too hard and they’ll start rebelling.
  • Use gentle motions and signals: if you tugged too hard on the bridle or whipped them, eventually they turned on you. And having softer cues made them more aware and alert, since they’d be on the lookout for them.
  • Give them work: a job and purpose kept them learning and being engaged as well. A bored hastar was a dangerous hastar.
  • And don’t just keep them at work while riding them. Take them out riding just to ride. This means they will not come to associate you with only work: it’ll be work and fun. Not only is it fun for the hastar, it keeps their minds engaged and exercises them. You bond with them over fun not work.
  • Play and reward the Hastar when they do a good job. Reinforce good habits and do your best to discourage (without hurting) the bad ones.

She put her pen down and stretched. her muscles in her legs and butt hurt! The next week, as she learned to ride (and get Gazini used to having a saddle and more weight on his back) she wondered if the pain would get worse?

-[Solo]- Healing the Land
Words: 818

Today Sueno stayed home and rested. Her muscles were recovering from her riding lessons, there was also a large bruise along her hip from getting thrown by Gazini. Gazini, the Hastar that she was training, did not like to be ridden; even when it was by someone as light as Sueno. He was getting better and didn’t buck as often anymore, though he did get irritated after a while like yesterday. No amount of bribing or pets would convince him so she and her friend and mentor Ràild decided it was best to put him in the stall and let him be.

Which left today for Sueno to avoid the Oblivionite Guardian staying and helping out at the farm for a while (when was he going to leave? Hadn’t the danger from dragons gone yet?) and stick to her room; not that she didn’t mind today. While she would rather be in her garden normally, or helping her father in the fields; she had magic tomes to study! The gifts from Fillarin and the rest of the ranch had lain on her desk for a while. Now she was ready to study them! What magic lay within their covers?

After an hour she had an idea on one; plant magic! Just what she wanted to know! There were many types and forms of magic out there, but Sueno cared for only healing, natural, or light spells! Let others use their powers to kill and hurt, she just wanted to use the power inside of her to help! But her people used Light magic, and Serenia had plenty of light so there really was no need for light spells on a farm except to light the room at night. But, if this tome on Earth Healing was right; there was a way to use her power to help the land!

She found herself quickly reading, no headache or boredom occurring like when she tried reading school textbooks. This was fascinating and something she wanted to know! After reading two thirds of the slim volume she pulled on her boots and headed outside to try it out. The last bit talked about things and techniques she knew she wouldn’t be able to use. But the first two thirds! Those may be possible..

She knew that the western field’s land was getting used up and didn’t have enough nutrients: she’d heard her father mentioning it and how they’d lose that land for a few years while it recovered. Why not see if it works? If it doesn’t, no harm done, if it does then that’s one worry off of Pa’s shoulders! She thought with a smile as she walked out into the middle of the field. Taking a deep breath she sat down and started to meditate.

Imagine that you are a tree, with roots reaching deep into the earth, the book said. So she did, and began to manipulate the glowing power within her to fill that tree, to reach down through the roots, giving back to the land.

“Muoroula Realira,”
She whispered, her heartbeat slowing to a calm peaceful beat, breath in, breath out. One with the Earth, one with the land.
About her a shimmering tree glowed, the manifestation of her mind and power. An unseen wind rustled the glowing leaves silently before the tree turned from a pale gold to pale green and dissolved into leaves that swirled and blew across the field, vanishing with gentle flickers as they touched the ground.

Her father, in the next field, had come over to see what she was doing. He’d seen the books and knew they were magic but wasn’t too sure what type. The instant he saw his daughter begin to glow he cursed aloud but didn’t enter. He knew that to interrupt a spell caused backlash and could hurt his daughter. He could only stare at the tall tree, an old Cedar he identified quickly. Cedar, he knew, had an old symbolism for healing and was often used in cleansing or protection rituals. Just what was his little girl doing?

The tree shimmered and dissolved and he rushed in. The spell was done, was she okay? She was, though, exhausted and drained by her first big spell.

“Did it work, pa? Did Ah heal the land?” She asked as he picked her up. She was too tired to move much, but she could see that she’d done something… or maybe that was felt something.

Veran stopped and looked around. It felt... healthy here. The land no longer looked parched and crumbly like it had. It was a deep brown color, richa dn promising. He dug his boot into the loam and smiled. It was indeed good soil once more. Some spell that was!
“Aye Sue. Ye did heal it. Looks like prim soil again.”

“Oh good.” She replied sleepily as she closed her eyes and fell asleep.

-[Solo- Special]- Working in the Field Learning about planting and harvesting
Words: 809

She was weary and tired easily for the next week after transferring her power into the land. Her father was estatic. There was always a fear that the land would dry out and you’d have to move when you were a farmer. Now they didn’t have to worry as much… Not that he was about to do anything stupid. That field, he told Sueno, would lie fallow for this year. Next year they would start again. Why that piece had lost it’s nutrients and the rest of the farm was doing fine, he didn’t know. But that power up meant that field would do well for the next few years at least though he thought it would be more along the lines of decades.
Sueno, since she tired easily, was with her father and not at the Ranch training. No, since she wanted to have both farm and ranch, she was earning about farming today.
It was the time to check over the plants, weed them again, make sure no pests had invaded, get rid of the weaker ones so that the stronger ones had more nutrients, and pick the ripe fruits and vegetables.
Today she knelt by her father’s side as he pointed out signs of a beginning bug invasion.
“This here is what the bite marks of those darned caterpillars. Videe’s been helping out and eating them as have yer Fae dragons, but there’s always some that manage to escape the wildlife.”

“How do ye get rid of them?”

“Ye don’t. Or at least not all of them. Thing is, some of the bugs is good for the land, so any spell that I get to keep them out will hurt the good ones too.”

“Hmm. So… just minimize the damage? Maybe we need more birds….”

He laughed. “More birds is good... except birds eat the fruit, vegetables and seeds. They dig up the soil to get at worms which we need. Too many birds is bad.”

“Is all the farm like that? Just the right amount, too much is bad, and none is just as bad?” Sueno asked with a sigh, causing Veran to laugh.

“Oh aye! It’s either too hot and dry or it’s raining too much. The wind’s too strong or it’s too hot and the wind needs to blow moisture in. Too many birds and they eat the crop. Too little and there’s too many bugs that eat the crop. Land goes bad, or a flood happens. Freak hail or snow storm kills a crop.” He shook his head. “It’s a fight really. But if we don’t do it, then people starve.”

Sueno nodded sagely. “And they say fighting is hard job!”

He chuckled and stood up. “True. But this year is looking good. Not too many bug marks, not too many birds destroying my crop, decent amount of rain and sunny days. Nice years like this make farming a joy. Come on. Let’s go look at the summer squashes. They should be ready to harvest soon!”

“Yay!” Sueno hopped to her feet. “That means real tasty salads and meals!”

“True true.” Veran smiled. Getting her back into training her own Hastar and helping out with the plants was helping his daughter go back to being happy.
“And yer garden’s looking to be doing good too. Ready to harvest and then plant a second round?” He asked as they checked and weeded the squash field.

“Yup! Got the first round of vegtables ripe for the picking. My herbs are all ready as well so Ma and Ah’ll be drying and grinding those soon. Fruit trees.. well.. they gotta be bigger.” She sighed. “Ah wish they were bigger! Apple’s and apricots from my garden would be nice.”

Veran smiled, “Patience. Things grow at their own time. Though...” He said with a twinkle in his eye. “I did spot a certain magic book in yer room… browsed it too…” He said in a teasing tone.

“What?! Da-aa!” Sueno propped her hands on her hips and glared at him.

“Ye should read the other green glowy book ye got. It’s got some interesting things in it.” Veran said with a grin. “Some things on speeding growth up. Be useful in those last days when it’s a race to see if we can harvest of an early winter storm kills the harvest.”

“Oh, that would be useful… though ye shouldn’t have gone and read my books afore me!” She said with a mock pout as she finished her weeding. “AH’m gonna go harvest my garden.”

“Not this afternoon ye won’t.” Veran said. “Best to wait fer morning to harvest. Ye pick them now and the moisture’s half gone.”

Sueno paused and looked at him. “Really? Drat... Ah wanted fresh tomatoes fer dinner….”

“Patience.” He said again. “It’s the word we farmers live by. Patience and hard work.”

Rural Adventures!
-[Solo- Special]- Harvesting Helping with the first harvest
Words: 883

Today was harvest day! Or at least, that’s what Sueno was thinking of it a. Her family was waking up before dawn to harvest as much of the fresh fruit and vegetables as possible, then in the afternoon they’d go through the fields and replant new vegetables for a second harvest later.
Melons, cabbage, lettuce, corn, cucumbers, summer squash, tomatoes, radishes, potatoes, peppers, eggplants, beans and many more. All were ripe and ready to be picked! They’d do this every other morning for the next three months in fact. The plants didn’t just give only one harvest; no they gave small harvests all summer long if the weather was kind. Some gave only one, and those where the ones that got replaced with a second one.

Sueno’s family did not own a big staple farm. They grew vegetables enough to feed the surrounding areas; they traded the vegetables for grains, meat, tools, fruits, and feed for their animals. And this would be the first year Sueno would be shown what to do then let on her own. All the other years she’d been too young and had always been given small tasks, or had to go to school. But not this year! She’d b working on the aisle of plants next to her father true, but not directly next to him.. it was independence of a sorts.

First up: the melons. They needed picking before the heat of the day so that they’d retai the water inside.
“Test them before ye pick them” Her father told her. “Watermelons make a dull thud when ripe. Cantaloupes need to be beige in color and the stem needs to come off at the slightest touch.” Sueno would pick two melons then trot off to deposit them. Her father just carried the basket of melons with him. They had a system: the edge of each aisle was a bushel basket that the melons would be stored in. Spells to keep away pests and thieves lay upon them to keep them safe.

It was barely dawn by the time they finished that field. Sueno’s legs and arms hurt a little from all the traveling back and forth carrying heavy melons. Large bushel baskets lined the edges of the field, testimony to the large harvest.

“That’s a good first round.” Veran said with a proud smile. “We’ve got enough for 2 mote harvests this summer I think.”
Then the help arrived. In exchange for the melons, nearby farm hands on the larger farms that dealt mostly in large amounts of grains or vine plants that weren’t ready to harvest always came over to help. They ranged from teens to older men, but all were known to Veran and Liopa. Sueno’s family always fed and took care of the people who helped them and would return the favor come Fall when the had their big harvests.

“Got a good haul fer ye lads today!” Veran called out as he waved to them. Sueno waved too before she and her father headed to the vegetable fields. They knew what needed doing so they went right to it while Liopa filled the bushel’s with water and covered them to keep them chilled. Sueno needed more instructions, so she trotted by her father’s side and scribbled notes.
“Check the size and color of them. Ye know the tomatoes and leafy plants already since they’re in yer garden. But eggplants need to be bright and shiny. So don’t go picking nay that aren’t a deep purple. Cucumbers need to have the spines slightly soft. The snow peas need are different then the peas ye grew. Only pick the ones that have the seeds just starting to show. The peppers just harvest the colored ones. It’s alright if they still have green on them, they taste good either way. Ye got all that?”

“Yep!” Sueno said as she showed him notes.

“God. Iffn ye aren’t sure, holler.” Veran said as he headed to the next field.

Sueno looked at the field in front of her as the sun brightened the sky to her left and cast long shadows as it peeked above the horizon.

This was her first field she’d be doing all alone! She grinned and grabbed the basket to haul it with her. Maybe she should ask to see Raemos’s levitation spells… they’d be useful in this case! Sueno, small and inexperienced finished her field only to find her father was already halfway done with his second! She was tempted to try and speed up, but knew she’d miss something or spill the basket if she did that. So she went for slow but steady: no wasting of energy and checking every plant! A missed fruit or vegetable meant it could attract in animals and bugs or go to waste and rot. Not something that she wanted. These were used to trade for other goods and they needed all of them! Though rotting fruit and vegetables did make good fertilizer….

Midday hit and the fields had been gone over. Sueno sat by her father and munched on a sweet cantaloupe from their fields while the help gathered around and chatted. They had gossiped and yelled at each other while they picked, but sitting in the shade and eating a snack was much better!

-[Solo- Special]- Talking with the Teachers
Words: 674

Veran and Fillarin were having dinner together. Mostly to talk about Sueno and how she was doing, what plans they had and where to go from here.

“That’n was a good meal Liopa.” Veran said as he leaned back and grinned at Sueno. “Alrighty. Let’s talk shop Fillarin.”
Fillarin smiled and leaned forward, “Well. She’s done well so far. Tamed and trained her own Hastar so perhaps the first business shall be that. Where do you want to put it?”

“The barn has a stall.” Veran looked over at her. “Well see about building a second barn fer those.. bigger bloody animals ye keep saying ye want. But they go away from the Sheron and Lyru pens.”

“Yes Pa.”

“Ye’ll clean up after it, feed it, and exercise it.” He said with a smile. Sueno nodded, she expected no less.

“Hey Veran, ye should think about getting an extra hand. Sue’s a good worker, but ye split her time with us. Madyrn’s out hunting all the time so why not hire a local to help?”

“I may.” He sighed. “But that’s not fer tonight’s talk. Sue. Ye’ve trained a creature, learned about farming, harvested by yerself fer the first time. Both Fillarina dn I have talked about how ye are doing and both of us are happy. Where do you want to go next?”

Sueno paused and thought for a moment. She loved to garden. Growing things calmed her, being outside in the wind and with her hands in the soil felt right.
But.. taming and learning with Gazini was fun too. She adored spending time with animals. But she did want to go out and tame larger and more dangerous creatures, which meant leaving the farm behind for a wile.

“Um.. Is it okay to leave during the slow periods to go and try tame wild things away from home? Learn from hunters? Then come back during the planting and harvesting times? Ah’d still like to learn from ye Mista Fillarin. Ye’ve got more knowledge and tips Ah need to learn. But.. Ah do want to go out and try my hand at non farm animals.”

They both nodded and smiled. “Told ye she’d say that.” Veran said to Fillarin.

“That ye did. Yell always be welcome here Sueno. In fact, iffn ye can train some guard animals, I’ll purchase them.. at a discount,” he said with a grin. Those Borgnah attacks that happened a while back showed a lot of farmers around here that we need some better animal guards. Plus things that can help against a dragon are always nice.”
Sueno gave a sad smile. “Yeah… but,” she said as she regained her larger happier smile as she put Madryn and the attack out of her mind; “the Jabrvin could be useful in herding too! Or the Rajsha. Ah’ve been thinkin’ of ways to make them useful in more than hunting or guarding!”

Liopa smiled and entered the conversation from where she was washing dishes. “And that’s the way it’s supposed to be love. The more you can make them useful, the more buyers who will come to you. We’ll support you in this. Just make sure you send letters while you’re away! It’s bad enough Madryn vanishes all the time, so don’t leave without a word.”

“Don’t worry. Ah won’t. Ah’ll send letters when I’m in a town or city between tamings. And Ah’ll come back to help with planting and harvesting. Ah’ve not spent all that time on my garden to abandon it!”

The adults chuckled and set about deciding just who they were going to hire, where a barn and training sale for the animals would go as well as how to pay for everything. Sueno watched and learned, taking notes in her mind. She would need to learn how to run a farm and ranch. Just knowing how and when to plant or how to catch and train creatures wasn’t enough. You had to feed them, care for the house, and pay for all sorts of things.

Rural Adventures!
-[Growth Quest]-

Quote:
Sueno has so far been an innocent and almost 'untouchable' girl. Focused on her farm, her family, and her animals, she has thought of little else and been largely unconcerned with matters in the field of romance or attraction. But there comes a time in nearly every growing adolescent's life that others around oneself begin to look appealing in other ways than simple friendship. How will Sueno react the first time such a distraction makes its way into her life? Is someone else the instigator - a brave potential suitor making his interests known after long having kept them quiet? Or is it Sueno who simply starts to notice someone in a way she never did before? How does she deal with it, and do her animals and her budding profession come first? Or does romance and teenage fancy become a new sort of 'chasing' and 'taming' game to add to her repertoire of interests?

User Image
It’d been a while since Sueno had gone into the near town; busy with helping on the farm, getting the barn all set and ready for her Gazini and future beasts, and learning at Fillarin’s ranch didn’t leave a lot of time to go to the local school or market. But today she found herself with some free time and a need to go clothes shopping. Her dresser was filled with, she sighed, old clothing. Clothes she wore to work in and clothes wore to clean in, battered and stained though still slightly cute. And all were getting to be too small.

“Ah’ve been working hard, Ah can take a break.” She told herself with a smile. In the box hidden under her bed lay the small stash of treasure she’d gathered over the years. The gems (dragon tears Fillarin called them) she’d gotten as a gift would make perfect for trading if she really went on a shopping spree! They were supposed to fund the building of her ranch… but she needed some new clothes!
To use them or not too…she sighed. All her other treasures couldn’t be traded. The tailors who made clothes she really liked were a rather snobby bunch and wanted gems or coins, not barter. Maybe I should go and find a new tailor... not like I have to stick with those expensive ones, I can find somebody new… someone who does take barter, like those extra tomatoes, onions, peppers and the squash my garden put out. She thought with a smile as she recalled the huge bounty that lay in the pantry. That was hers to deal with, most of the time she just gave them to her parents, they dried and saved the extras; but perhaps she should use them as trade goods since she had too many. And next year I’ll have apple crops to trade! Though… I know Ma and I will have a blast making dried apples, canning them for winter, and all the baked goods we can make!
She put on her last remaining good dress (which meant cute and something she wouldn’t go to work in) and sighed at the short length. Her body was growing up and she hadn’t been buying clothes to keep up with it!

“Gotta go put on shorts….” She muttered to herself in disgust. Did nothing but her work clothes fit any more? And that just because they were hand me downs from the ranch hands and her brother. Ick! A girl just cannot have only used boy clothes!
Her mind made up, she pulled out one of the tears and headed down to talk with her mother.

“Hey Ma, can Ah go into town and go clothes shopping? All my clothes are getting too small or ratty.”

Liopa looked over at her daughter. “That sounds fun. Do you need some coins?”

“Um… Maybe. Got this, but Ah was thinking of going to a different tailor than the one we usually go to. Find someone Ah can trade all those extra veggies my garden put out.”

“Oh no! You can’t use the dragon tear!” Liopa said, aghast at the idea. “That’s far too expensive and precious! You could buy outfits for a lifetime with that one! Keep it for emergencies or something more expensive than clothes.” She set aside her sewing and bustled out of the room into the pantry. “Take the vegetables instead. Also herbs! I know of a new tailor in town, Neema says they’re decent and accept produce unlike the others. Why you have a shop in a farming community and don’t take produce as trade goods I don’t know! But some people just like to put on airs and---”

“Yeah Ma, Ah get it! No need to start that rant…” Sueno said with a laugh. Her mother loved to gossip and rant about the inadequacies of money. Trading goods was better in her eyes. But goods can spoil while coins don’t, so it was useful to have both. That was Sueno’s thought on the matter.

“Take the wagon up to Fillarin’s!” Her mother called over her shoulder. “That nice boy Ràild’s brother came up to visit him. Why not have them take you to the village? That way you can carry all the gear… and I know Ràild mentioned wanting to purchase some things!”

“Yes Ma.” Sueno said with a sigh. Shopping with a boy? Her brother was not the best shopping companion. He always said everything was cute and no real opinions! Would Ràild or his brother be any better?
Loading up the wagon, she hitched her parent’s old Hastar up (proud that she could do it by herself now) and headed out.
-----

“Ràild!” Sueno called and waved from her perch on the wagon seat at the older boy who was rounding up a small herd of Sherons. He gave a brief wave but didn’t call out; he needed to finish his job.
Sueno parked the wagon and loosened the traces to let the Hastar relax, eat some grass and drink from the trough. As she waited one of the other work hands, a boy she hadn’t really talked to other than a few times came over.
~~~ His View~~~
He’d been out here on his uncle’s ranch for a few years now. After getting caught on the rougher side of town in activities his parent’s hadn’t approved of, they’d had decided that living at his uncle’s ranch for a few years would keep him from going down the wrong path. Hard to go wrong out here: there wasn’t much to do! So he spent most of his time at the school, learning and showing off to the locals. In the afternoons though, he was forced to return to the farm and help. Normally he disliked helping, but lately he found more reason to be at the ranch than away.
There was this girl, a few years younger than him, from the nearby farm that had started to arrive for lessons. She was absolutely adorable! Always had a smile and a “Good Mornin’,” for him when he saw her. The accent? Cute, where the other’s bumpkin ways irritated him. But he never got a lot of time to chat with her. Fillarin kept him away; he was certain his uncle keeping him away! He had been watching her though, not in a creepy way, but he’d see her as he was going from barn to barn and would stop to watch. He found himself looking forward to the morning smile and wave, and felt disappointed when he didn’t see her… or when she’d come back after a month’s absence and there’d been no smile.
He thought she was like a little sister he could have had. Then he’d gone home for a while; visited the city, seen his parents, met up with old friends. He’d had an old girlfriend, but he felt nothing when he saw her. In fact, he found himself looking forward to heading back to his uncle’s! He loved the city life, the liveliness and clash of sights, sounds, smells! But there was that smile that wasn’t there…
So he headed back, much to his parent’s happy disbelief. And then, when he’d come back and saw her sitting on a wagon, wearing that cute dress like top and shorts underneath, his heart skipped a beat. He found himself nervous, and very much away of the bare arms and legs being shown. That wasn’t, he realized, a little girl anymore. Her curves weren’t impressive, she was just beginning to become a woman, but the slightly too small dress and shorts clung and showed that she wasn’t a child anymore.
She’s not a kid sister, and I’m… I think I’m in love. He realized with a flush as a wind rustled her white hair, causing her to grin that beautiful smile and run a hand through it to wrap it up into a loose braid. His reaction upon seeing her and watching her watch that broad bloke Ràild as he rounded up some animals made him stop and think. He liked her, loved her he was convinced, why else would a simple smile affect him so much? Yet he’d never said more than a few sentences to her! And Ràild was by her side a lot…. And she was watching him right now….
Gathering his courage, he approached. It was time to change that!
~~~

Sueno, waiting for her friend and mentor Ràild to finish, was rather bored. Watching Ràild in the saddle wasn’t that interesting. She wondered why, after all she knew he was attractive. Maybe it was his age? Though that hadn’t stopped her and her old school mates when they were younger! In fact, she realized, she hadn’t had a crush or talked about love at all ever since she stopped going to school and started her training! Maybe I’ve been too busy? She thought as she noticed someone approaching.
Looking over she smiled and waved as she did to all the ranch hands. It was Fillarin’s nephew, the city boy. What was his name again….. Oh yeah! Lyklor!

“Mornin’ Lyklor.” She said, glad to have someone to talk to while she waited.

He gave a grin and leaned against the wagon as he responded. “Morning Sueno.” He was of average height, with a lean build and tanned skin from working on the ranch. A nice set of sharp green eyes was set in an angular face topped with straight silver hair that stood out against the tanned skin. Attractive enough, though he was all angles and sharp to her eyes. Fillarin had warned her of him, said he’d been sent out here by his parent’s to get him away from the wrong sort. He was, she thought, nice enough. At least he’d always said hi and smiled at her.

“You’re all dolled up today. Looking lovely too. Going somewhere?” He asked, perfectly confident in himself. Sueno was rather surprised, he’d never really talked to her before…. But compliments were nice! Especially considering these clothes were old and a little too small….

“Thank ye, but this ain’t dolled up!” She said with a flashing grin. “Gonna go clothes shopping. All Ah’ve got are old clothes… this is the last of the good ones that fit.”

Clothes shopping, he thought. Well, he had always seen her wearing work outfits, though she’s always looked cute in them. And of course, girls always loved to shop….

“Well.” He drawled. “You may say it’s not dolled up, but it’s still cute and looking good on you. Mind if I join you?”

Sueno felt a small surge of happiness, still cute? Good! She always had thought she had good taste in clothes! Should he come along? He wasn’t a stranger but…

“Ye sure? Might not be too fun. Just gonna buy stuff.”

“Wouldn’t ask if I wasn’t sure.” He said as he straightened up. “Besides, I want to get to know you better. I know I love seeing your smile and look forward to seeing it when we meet. Now I want to get to know the girl behind the smile.” Sueno found herself blushing at the very forward approach. She put a hand to her warmed cheeks.

“Oh my! Well, when ye put it like that, how’s a girl supposed to say no? Ye don’t mind if I ask Ràild first though? Ma says his brother’s in town and since Ah’m going that way Ah should offer them a ride.”

“Not at all!” He grinned, happy that A) she’d accepted and B) she wasn’t waiting for Ràild because she wanted to go shopping with him.

Ràild, it turned out, was taking his brother fishing since they’d gone to town yesterday. That left Sueno alone with Lyklor in the wagon ride there. Not that he had anything planned. Lyklor just wanted to get to know her more. And let her get to know him as more than just a ranch hand. He kept the conversation on innocent things; what she liked, her hobbies, her life so far. He told her what growing up in the city had been like… though that led to a bit of an awkward moment.

“So... what was yer uncle meaning by ‘ fell in with the bad sort’?” Sueno asked him.

“Ahh...” He sighed and ran his hand through his hair. “I made friends who were in gangs. They… stole stuff… that sort of thing.”

Her eyes narrowed, “Did ye-?”

“NO!” He said quickly. “At least, I hadn’t yet. Though they were starting to press. It’s why I didn’t complain too much when my folks sent me here.”

Sueno relaxed. “Ah thought so. Yer too nice.” He looked startled.

“You.. you really think that?” He was surprised, she barely knew him!

“Mh-hmm. If ye was really a bad apple then ye wouldn’t actually help out at the ranch!” She looked up and gave him a big smile. “Ah always see ye workin’ hard so ye can’t be that bad! Plus ye always say hi.”

He blushed and looked away, heart skipping a beat at the smile. Why was she so darned cute?!
Turning back with a grin, he asked; “So… you’ve noticed me? Cause..” Sueno could practically see the ‘to heck with it’ that passed through his mind.
“Because I’ve definitely noticed you… And.. Was wondering if you’d be willing to see me as more than … a ranch hand or friend. I like you Sueno. A lot.”

Sueno blinked then blushed. He’d just confessed! That was…. well, new! She and the other girls (when she’d still gone to school) had often talked about romance and sweethearts in the ways of small females everywhere… but she’d never thought she’d be on the receiving end!
Those piercing green eyes watched her and she couldn’t say no. But… at the same time…. she felt like she couldn’t say yes either.
“Um… I…” Her reaction was not what he’d expected and it hurt when there was no big smile or anything.

“No it’s fine.” He said with a sigh and his shoulders dropped. “I kinda sprang that on you… You don’t have to answer right now…”

“Oh no! That’s not… I’m not saying no.” She said. Why not she thought. I may be busy with my learning.. and planning to leave for a month on and off to learn from hunters on how to catch and tame wild beasts, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t try out a relationship!
“But… Ah’m gonna to be leaving soon, and going away fer a month or so then be back.. We could… try.. Ah mean.” She blushed and gave a shy smile. “Ah wouldn't mind getting to know you better….”

The happy look on his face made her feel better. He wasn’t bad looking...a little slim… and he seemed real nice. She could always try! No harm in trying right? And she was 14 and never had a boyfriend! Rather sad that, she thought.

Lyklor’s face had a large happy grin on his face; she’d said yes!
“Ah, thank.. I mean…ah” He stuttered and looked foolish. Cute, thought Sueno.

“Ah’ll warn ye though, Ah’ve got plans fer my ranch and learning about the wilder beasties an all that. That’s why Ah’m gonna be leaving, gonna go out and actually go with hunters to see how they work.”

Lyklor shook the gleeful cloud away and concentrated back on her.
“Oh.. that sounds rather dangerous. What kind of beasts?”

“The big ones! Ones Ah can teach to guard, be mounts, and companions fer warriors and hunters.”

He thought for a moment, that was.. a lot different than the cute and adorable girl he’d watched… but it just added spice. And she was following what she wanted to do, something he could admire. He didn’t really have a plan for the future…
“Mm, you’ll have to tell me about them.. and maybe I can join you in some of them… be nice to learn more about ranching and hunting.”

Sueno looked at him, “Do ye have a dream? Ye know mine now.”

“Um.. no. Not really.” He looked off into the distance and thought. “When I was in the city… there was always friends and school… I never thought more than a week in advanced.”

“Ah hope ye can find a dream.” Sueno said seriously. “Dreams make the work worth it. Gives ye a goal to strive for. Living without a dream isn’t living Ah think.”

He looked at her and nodded, “That’s deep. And I can see your point.” He grinned, “I didn’t know you’d thought about these…. never wondered really... Now I do. What other secrets and deep thoughts do you have?” He teased, but half seriously. Sueno giggled and tossed her small braid over her shoulder.

“Ye’ll have to wait fer those!”

I’m glad I approached her, he thought as he changed to subject to where she wanted to go shopping since the town was just ahead. There’s some steel in her, I never would have known if all I did was look from a distance…. Pity about her plans to move around, but I’ll join her on those. I have after all been trained to fight… and the hunts can teach me how to hunt as much as it does her.

Sueno was wondering about him, what did he like to do, what was he like really? She knew only a bit, but the mystery only added to the excitement of having a boyfriend. And, she realized, an almost first date! Or, she grinned when he asked her if she’d like to grab lunch while they were here, a real first date.

He works at the same ranch I do, and doesn’t seem to mind that I have plans that will take me elsewhere… I wonder if it will work out? Not that I want to settle down with a boy any time soon! I’ve got my whole life ahead of me! But… this can be practice… and if he’s a real keeper.. well, we’ll see. Wonder how my family will react?

Rural Adventures!
-[Solo]- Inspecting the Damage
Words: 570

Sueno’s plans for her traveling of during the quiet periods between harvests were ruined by the mara’s invasion. Living so close to the lakes, they got hit hard when the Mara attempted to cut off access to the healing waters. Her entire village did… The village more so than the outlying farms, and the farms more than the ranches, but all were affected. Her parents, after coming home to discover that Sueno had been attacked by Mara’s, had sent her to Fillarin’s ranch, knowing that they had more fighters there and it’d be safer for their daughter than staying at home.

After the Mara had been repulsed(thanks, oddly enough to the dragons along the lake) she and her family came back to find the fields almost untouched… except by wildlife which was fine. The barn and house were slightly damaged, but nothing was destroyed completely. The first thing Sueno did was head to the slightly damaged barn she was using to house her fae, olrawk, and Videe. It had a mara shaped hole in the wall, but not in the wire mesh that partitioned the barn into several ‘rooms.’ Relived to know it was intact and nothing ruined, she set about cleaning it up and putting out food then releasing her creatures inside.

Gazini she left out in the fenced of pen since his barn had been half destroyed. Sueno and her father looked at it and sighed.

“What’d they do? Just walk forward and go through every wall?” Her father groused. Sueno nodded in agreement as they looked at the slumped building. Half it’s walls were destroyed, the inside struts ruined, and the hay kept for the two hastars ruined.

“Think we can keep Gazini and ol’ Kinna in mah coop for a few days?”

“Nah… they’ll kick their way out, yer coop has old walls, very thin. They’ll be fine fer a few days outside. Ah’ll set up a lean-to fer them to keep out of the sun or rain iffn we get any.”

They turned to look at the house, it too had a wall destroyed.

“Ah dinna think Mara know what a door is.” Sueno commented as they watched Liopa look out at them through the mara shaped hole right next to the door.

“Ah think Ah agree with ye on that.”

At least the fields and garden are fine.” Sueno said as she looked up at her father. “We can trade for help in rebuilding.”

“A blessing from Seren that. Guess the constructs dinna figure out that we need food tah survive.. It makes this a bit less painful, though with all the dead and destroyed buildings in town..." He sighed and shook his head in sorrow. "It’ll be a while before we know the full damage done.”

Ah think Ah’ll wait till every things fixed before Ah leave to go taming Pa, Ah dinna want tah leave ye and Ma in a bind.” Sueno said as she looked over the farm, training dangerous beasts to be guards could wait; her family needed her.

“That’ll be nice.” Veran said with a smile. “And we dinna know how many Mara are left out there… or what the other races will do once they recover from this.” He sighed and hitched up his belt. “Come on, let’s go help yer mother get the house to rights then we’ll go and gather up anything ripe from the fields.”

Rural Adventures!
-[Solo]- A New Plan
Words: 533

Sueno had been talking with Lyklor about her plans. He was on his break at the Ranch and she was over there visiting, getting some last minute advice about training and trying to figure out just what she was going to do for her training.
“So you’re leaving soon?”

Uh huh. There’s family in Hot Springs who’ve got a daughter in the Wild Tribe. They say she trained a borgnah mount… so Ah was figuring Ah’d ask her for some tips.. Plus maybe she’d be willing to take me with her into the wilds…”

“You still worried about being attacked by dragons?” He asked as he finished his lunch.

“Mm.. sorta. That and other wild animals. Ah’ve never been taught to fight. And there’s dangerous things I the wild. Ah want to tame them.” She gave a chuckle. “So Ah need to learn something for defense or have a fighter with me.”

“Wish I could go with you.” Lyklor sighed. He really wanted to.. but he’d just started his own training to become more than just a ranch hand on the farm and was finding that he liked it a lot. That and he knew Sueno’s family would be very leery of him being out in the wilderness with just her. He knew why… and a part of him hoped by going with her it’d end up there… but at the same time he did not want to disrespect Sueno. “Hopefully this woman will be willing to help. Or the wild tribe will. I've heard about them; some of the best hunters they say! I bet if you ask nicely, someone will help you.”

“Ye think so? Ah’ve heard that they’re real rowdy and not to be trusted.”

“But you’re willing to work with this woman who’s a part of it?”

Her family knows mine and they say she’s a decent sort. Just loves to be out in the wilderness.” Sueno paused and thought over what she’d just said. “Hmm.. Ah bet iffn she’s a good sort, there’s probably others. And ye’re right; the best hunters are said to be from there!” Now that she was thinking about it; asking the Wild Tribe for help seemed a really good idea; they were everywhere in the wild, hunters who could fight and protect her, teach her how to survive out in the wilderness, and how to tame!

She grinned and hopped to her feet, bending down to kiss Lyklor on the cheek. “Thanks Lyklor! Ah hadn’t thought of asking the Wild Tribe fer help! But that seems the safest route.”

She skipped off humming to go talk with Fillarin about it and then head to Hot Springs to the Wind Café to talk with that broad cook again. I’ll write a letter and ask her myself… and through her I’ll see if the Tribe is willing to help me!
After talking with Fillarin, who happily agreed that using the Wild Tribe would be safer than her trying to go out alone, she headed back home to write her letter. Her parents were also much relived when they heard the new plan; they’d been very worried about their daughter going off alone into the wilderness.

Rural Adventures!
-[Taming]- Autumn Days and -[Water Sprites]-

Failed to even see a Alvhui! But at least I got to enjoy a lovely autumn day in my homeland before I leave for the winter to try and learn to capture, tame, and train wild creatures!

Then I went and tried to bribe one to take over cleaning the barn... not sure it'll do that but at least one approached and took the food! Maybe with my Da working on bribing them all winter one will take care of that for me... Be nice once I get more animals so I don't have to clean up after all of them!

Fail and caught one on second try.
