Going for an Alvhui

Sueno had always known about the Alvhui; living so near the Lakes and so close to nature like her family did it would be almost impossible to not have heard of them! Spirits of Lakes it was said, embodiment of the light of Serenia manifested through its pure water. But Sueno wasn’t sure how much of that was true: she saw them sometimes in the streams by her farms, and had heard that they often helped or harmed farmers who had wells, streams, ponds or canals on their lands. She’d never really met one, but on this cold autumn day, with the harvest in and her work on getting the land ready for winter done, she was left with nothing to do and decided she should change that.

Something so magical lived just right by… and yet she’d never really looked into it! What do water spirits do when it starts getting cold, she wondered, do they go hide in the lakes where I’ve heard the ice doesn’t reach? Or do they burrow into the mud and sleep out the frozen months?
She walked along through the autumn landscape, the pale golds of summer darkening to fiery reds and warm browns. The trees all around were half bare already, their leaves carpeting the woodland floors. They crunched beneath her feet as she wondered about, looking for any signs of the Alvhui she just knew had to be around. But she saw only the quiet serene landscape; only fish and birds showed themselves to her. She could hear the far off cry of a predator, the chirps of birds, and the rustle of wind through the leaves. But not chittering laugh of the Alvhui, no splashing of them playing.. Maybe they’ve already moved to a warmer place, she wondered as she sat beneath a tree and watched the cold clear waters burble along cheerfully; the few fish still in them moving sluggishly.
She would have considered it an afternoon wasted… but it wasn’t. She’d had a quiet day to see her beloved farm before leaving it for a while. It hurt to have to leave here; she didn’t want to! But if she was to fulfill her dream, she needed to go see the actual lands where the animals lived, see what they ate, how they acted if she was to really understand them. And to tame an animal, make it respect and obey you, you had to know them. The other way was to be a cruel master and beat them… but she’d never do that! One had to treat animals with respect and kindness for they could feel pain and emotions just like people!

With a contented sigh, Sueno leaned back into the tree trunk, watching the sun twinkle through the leaves above her, or shimmer along the water. A landscape of browns, golds, and reds cut by the pale blue of the stream and encircled by the deep blue of the sky; she smiled. This was the land she loved; it would be hard to leave it.
