SOLO
Word Count: 855

It hadn’t exactly been an easy decision.

Destiny City was the last place she’d wanted to go. She had horrible, horrible memories of that place. Being attacked by youma, by Negaverse agents, even by civilians when they realised she was one of those ‘troublesome senshi’. Early run-ins with Valleriite had knocked her confidence, and she’d just never really built it back up. Joining the Basterds had been nice, but it hadn’t given her what she’d needed. She’d needed help, and a lot of it – Europa had tried, and she’d been so grateful. But then the events of Tartaros had left her flailing in the deep end again, with nowhere to go but down. She’d been sinking before she’d properly learnt to swim.

Arizona wasn’t a place she wanted to stay, and Leon didn’t particularly want to either. They were moving away from here, that much was definite, but to where...well, back to Destiny City. Leon’s mind was set, and Selena couldn’t tell him why she didn’t want to go back. She didn’t want to upset him anymore – there’d been enough heartache in the family at the moment. Leon wanted a new start, but somewhere familiar, and Selena was game for that. But Destiny City wasn’t a new start – it was returning to somewhere she’d been hiding from, and for good reason.

There were good memories too. Sitting crossed legged on her stripped bed, she leaned over the edge and pushed her hands into the gap underneath it, pulling out a battered old shoe box. Sitting back up again, Selena placed it down in front of her, and lifted the lid. The box was neatly organised inside, with a small pile of photos covering one half whilst various trinkets littered the other half. She reached for the photos, drawing them out and flicking through them with a small smile. She’d grown up in Destiny City, from a tiny swaddled baby to the high schooler she’d been when she’d left. Selena had friends who she’d deserted, people who she’d ditched...part of the reason she didn’t want to return was because she knew there’d be questions to answer. Questions she couldn’t answer, because she didn’t even really know the answers herself.

A thumb stroked across the familiar faces in the photographs – childhood friends who’d travelled with her through school. There was a picture with Damian, an ex of hers. Pictures with couples she’d match-made – she wondered how they were doing, and if they’d been successful. Then came different pictures, however. They weren’t pictures of her, they were pictures of Sailor Eos. There were only a few, right at the back of the pile. One of her roof-jumping, one of her with *********, one of the Basterds...Selena’s grip tightened, and she hastily threw the photos back into the box with more force than she’d meant to. The momentum caused the box to wobble precariously on the edge of the bed, before finally toppling onto the ground and emptying its contents.

Selena sighed, begrudgingly untangling her legs and getting down on her knees on the floor, brushing the contents messily back into the box. She’d sort it out later – it’d all probably get messed up during the move, anyway. Her fingers brushed something solid and cold, and she frowned, wrapping her hands around it and drawing it out. Her expression softened a little at the sight of her henshin pen, gleaming dimly in the sunlight filtering through her bedroom window. She hadn’t held it since it had been put in the box, and that had been two years ago. Cautious fingers ran over the smooth surface, tracing the shape. She’d thought about snapping it, or trying to destroy it. She’d gotten as far as raiding her dad’s toolbox and stealing his hammer. But she hadn’t been able to bring herself to do it. And so instead it had been banished to her trinket box, cast in darkness under her bed.

Did that mean she still wanted to henshin up? That she wanted to fight?

No. It couldn’t.

Shaking her head clear of such ridiculous thoughts, Selena finished clearing up the mess and deposited the shoebox into one of the many other boxes littering her room. She’d just put it down when her dark-haired older brother walked in, a shy smile on his face. He slipped his hands into his pockets, glancing around the room and giving an approving nod. ”All packed?”

Selena smiled widely back at him – her brothers always cheered her up – and gave a small nod. She could try to be enthusiastic, but it would be a blatant lie. “Yep. It’s all ready for loading, I think.” She pushed herself up to sit on the edge of the bed, fiddling with her fingers. Leon sighed, and strode over to sit next to his baby sister and put a reassuring arm around her shoulder. He gave her a squeeze, ”It’ll all be okay El. We’re making a new start for ourselves.” Her own slender arms wrapped their way around her brothers waist, and she hugged him back tightly.

“I know.”

As long as they were together, they’d be okay.

REGULAR | Back to Black | Selena x Tallulah

Selena meets up with Tallulah upon her return to DC. Whilst the coffee meet goes well at first, with the pair catching up on normal things, the conversation soon turns to senshi and the white moon court, and things only go down from there.

SOLO (backdated to March 2nd 2012)
Word Count: ******** Flu.

An immune system of steel, she'd boasted. Nothing can touch me, that's what she'd said when Tallulah had warned her off of coming any closer. And had she listened?

No chance.

Snatching another tissue from the box on her bedside table, Selena emptied the disgusting contents of her nose into it before depositing it into the bin that had been relocated to the floor just beside her bed. Her head was throbbing, her joints ached, her head felt like it was being smacked over and over again by a brick, and she hadn't been able to get out of bed since yesterday morning. It was like death was standing at the window and laughing at her - it didn't want to kill her, just make her feel like utter s**t.

Groaning, she moved her arm to flick the television controller, changing the channels on the tv. A dull ache was coming from her stomach, but whether it was hunger or the illness Selena wasn't sure. She hadn't been able to keep food down since last night, making her last proper meal breakfast yesterday...so about 30 hours ago. Probably hunger, she concluded.

"Room service?"

A quiet knock at her door followed, before Leon pushed it open with his butt, carrying a tray from which the most delicious smell eminated. Selena's stomach did a flip and she thought she might chunder right then, but then her body seemingly decided against it.

"I'm dying Leon," she croacked, reaching for another tissue, "Save yourself." He chuckled, shaking his head as he balanced the tray on top of Selena's lap. Her older brother had prepared her a steaming bowl of the most delicious looking soup and a cup of tea. Any other day, she could've kissed him. Today, not so much. "I can't eat, I'll just vom it up." She was adamant of this fact, having had to make a total of four emergency bathroom trips so far, "Vomming isn't a pleasant experience."

"You have to eat something," Leon insisted, perching himself on the edge of his younger sisters' bed, "Even if you don't feel like it." He picked up the spoon, scooping up a helping of soup and approaching Selena's face with it. "Open wide." She shook her head, remaining defiant.

"I'm not leaving until you've eaten something."

She grumbled, and opened her mouth. She'd eat it, but knew all too well that it would be decorating the toilet bowl in another half an hour. She just hoped the illness would go away soon.

Right.

This was it.

It was late. The sun had sunk below the horizon long ago, and the moon was bright and high in the sky, partly obscured by the heavy cloud cover. She’d told Leon that she was out with friends, and not to wait up for her. He was a heavy sleeper, so she didn’t have to worry too much about waking him when she returned. If she did she’d just feint being drunk – she’d get a scolding but nothing more.

Her palms were sweaty, but her right hand gripped tightly around the cold metallic pen as she ducked into a side street, a familiar shortcut that she’d used numerous times. She’d decided to stick to areas she knew, at least for now, while she got back into the hang of things. This had certainly been a long time coming – not just the 2 years she’d been away, but the past two weeks when she’d been stuck in bed with the most awful flu. Selena had wanted to wait until she was completely healthy before trying anything, and even then she’d had too busy a schedule to risk staying up late and not getting enough sleep. She hadn’t wanted her new job to suffer.

Selena leaned back against the wall, giving the dark alleyway a quick once-over to assure herself that she was alone. She didn’t need any added complications tonight; it was just supposed to be a simple getting used to things. She was planning to stay in covered areas, perhaps trying out some roof jumping but nothing more. Keeping things simple, she didn’t want to run into any trouble (i.e. Negaverse).

A deep breath. A quick wriggle of her arms and legs to loosen them up; she hadn’t realized how much she’d been tensing them. Selena lifted her henshin pen, running her fingers up its length and over its decorations. It had been a while since she’d held it properly, having hidden it away in a box underneath her bed. She hadn’t had the heart to throw it away, and now she was glad of that. She needed it. As much as she hated to admit it to herself, she needed it. And in a way, she missed it – missed the rush that she’d gotten when defeating a youma, or the sheer joy she’d experienced when perfecting roof jumping. It had been good, for a bit. The smile that had formed faded a little as she remembered the not-so-good. But that was why she was here, and why Tallulah was helping her. She needed to get stronger, more independent. Europa was a role model of sorts – that was what she wanted to be. Knowledgeable and capable.

She wasn’t going to be a scared little wimp anymore.

Selena inhaled deeply and clenched her henshin pen tightly, only at the last minute remembered not to scream out her words, “Eos Power, Make-Up!”

It all happened so quickly – she’d forgotten just how sudden a change it was. The tiara, the collar, the dress, the stockings and shoes, they were all suddenly there and she wasn’t Selena Adams anymore. No-one would know who she was, even though as far as Selena was concerned it was pretty obvious.

She flexed her fingers and smiled at the feeling of power that she suddenly possessed.

Sailor Eos was back. And this time, she meant business.
