▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✧✧✧ And So It Begins
Solo - Class Choice - WC 2465 (8pts)

The feeling of being utterly alone shot through her as darkness shrouded the room. It used to be so bright and happy. What had happened? Grey eyes looked from side to side as she called out a timid “Hello?” Her voice came out squeaky and high pitched. Fear had leaked into the tone and made it unsteady. Everything about this seemed wrong. Off. It wasn’t right at all.

She moved forward through the darkness and held her hands out to feel around. Sarnai was trying to make sure she didn’t bump into anything. Or knock something over and make too much noise. What if she made a loud sound when she wasn’t supposed to and brought attention to herself? What if someone who wasn’t supposed to heard her there? Panic started to well up inside her very quickly. When her hands hit a solid object she startled but only managed to pull in a breath of air. She managed to hold in the gasp or shriek that sat at the back of her throat as a threat. She was also impressed that she hadn’t bumped into anything along the way.

She felt around on what it was that her hands had found. She noticed the handle and quickly identified the object as a door. It would lead her out of the darkness. Hopefully. A slow breath in and she turned the handle down so that she could pull the door open. At first she was slow, hesitant, but when nothing bad happened at first she gained more confidence. Finally the door was opened and it revealed the dark outline of a figure. Sarnai couldn’t help but step away. Another jolt of fear going through her. The person was tall. They towered over here in a menacing manner. Were they going to hurt her!?

They leaned forward and and reached for her with a flexed hand. It seemed more like talons than fingers. Poised to cause damage. Ready to dig into her skin and rip flesh apart. Sarnai tried to back up even more but it seemed no matter how far back she went the hand still came forward. It still came for her. How long was their arm!? How far could they reach!? “No!” She tried screaming out. The shifter didn’t want to be caught by that hand but it didn’t seem like she could escape it either. “No! No No! NO!” She kept crying out as she shook her head and did what she could to speed up her retreat.

It crept closer and closer. Slowly. Threateningly. The long fingers went for her throat. Her eyes looked past the hand to try and see the face behind it. That was her mistake. Without her eyes to watch the hand slipped closer and touched the delicate skin of her throat. And then squee--

BANG. BANG. BANG.

“Wake up Sarnai. Its time for you to work the booth.” The rough voice of one of the caravanners came through the door of her wagon.

Sarnai had been having a nightmare. A common one too. So when the banging had happened her eyes flew open and she sat upright with a gasp and looked around for a few seconds. It took only a moment before she realized where she was. Safe. In her own room. Well, sort of room. It was a caravan wagon that Inaza had gotten for her to use for the time being. Exhaling slowly she lowered her head forward into her left hand so that she could cover her eyes for a second.

BANG. BANG.

“Sarnai!”

The call for her to get up came yet again and she shoved her hand up into her silver hair to move it away from her face. Her eyes went to the door that was being beaten and she groaned.

“Alright! I’ll be there in a minute.”

That seemed to pacify whoever was out there because no more knocks came. Sarnai continued to sit up in bed for a minute longer, willing her wildly beating heart to calm down before she bothered to toss the covers off and swing her legs over the edge of the makeshift bed she had. Bare feet met the floor and she raised her arms up into a stretch. Each of her muscles pulled and it felt like heaven. A soft sound escaped her and her hands dropped down. She was pleased with the state of her muscles at least.

Finally she got to her feet and moved around in her small living space to grab a change of clothes. Since she was going to be working the booth then she needed to look the part. That meant chains and skirts and a hair covering. She lined the bottoms of her eyes with kohl and grabbed her worn deck of cards from the shelf before moving toward the door. It was a hasty put together but the messier it looked the more mysterious she came out. An odd fact she’d discovered over the years. Sarnai paused long enough to slip into her sandals and grab her key ring then out the door she went.

The door was shut then locked behind her, a tug given to the door to make sure that no one could get in, and she turned to go to work. Tarot reading was a fun hobby she’d learned a long time ago to pass the time but she had learned that it helped with her other job. It helped her to blend in and helped her to bring in coin when her other job was a bit.. Dry. Most wouldn’t take a second glance at a ‘gypsy’ walking past or sitting at a booth trying to coax people over so that they could give them a reading. They were beneath them and so they weren’t worth more than a simple look. Even the guards didn’t pay much attention. A plus when one was up to no good.

Inaza was thrilled when he’d learned that Sarnai had picked up the skill. It gave her more of an edge but also another way to bring in coin. Anything to satisfy his greedy heart. The man was meant to be her guardian, her dad after losing her parents, but he was more of a handler than anything. Her other job was dictated by him. She only did the jobs he accepted and the clients never met her personally. If you wanted “Kamal” to smuggle something for you then you needed to seek out Inaza. “Kamal” never showed their face, never let anyone know who they were.

There were rumors of course. “Kamal” was some Oban Noble that got bored with their cushy life and knew how to avoid the custom checks. “Kamal” was some hot shot merchant that just knew how to hide things among his wares. There were many rumors. Sarnai had heard them all. Most pointed to “Kamal” being a male, none could agree on his race, and fewer settled on his profession. All anyone ever agreed on was that Inaza was the point of contact and despite efforts to bribe the man into setting up meetings he never took them, no matter how good the pay.

Sarnai guessed she was thankful for that at least. How many clients would like to know that their goods were being transported and protected by a teenager? A small female teenager at that. She pulled her bottom lip into her mouth so that she could chew on it a bit nervously. Knowing that she could lose clients just because of how she looked was worrying to say the least. Sure she had the Tarot thing but most of her coin to survive came from smuggling jobs she took.

The familiar looming figure of her so called guardian pulled her from her thoughts. His long, slender fingers reached out and grabbed her by the shoulder when she was close enough.

“Sarnai. You have another job after tonight so pack your things when you are done at the booth.” He grinned as she spoke lowly to her.

His hand left her shoulder and went to her hair. Though she wore a head covering she had left her side ponytail out. His long fingers twirled into the strands as he chuckled slightly.

“We’ll leave in the morning but you can sleep on the ride there. It should take us some hours to arrive at the drop.” As he continued to speak to her his eyes were darting around to those around them. “And don’t forget to practice your illusions."

Inaza always made sure that no one could overhear them. He made sure no one looked too closely at their relationship. Pried too much. When he was finished speaking he dropped the strands of her hair that had wrapped around his fingers and moved past her. There was no need to say anything more. Sarnai knew that she was to work until the last possible moment at night. Always snagging that one last customer to ensure they had every bit of coin she could wring from the dark hours. Then she was to go back and pack her things up. Wasn’t too much to do since her wagon held everything and it was easily pulled. Inaza just wanted her to put all valuable things away and make sure nothing could tip over. He hated messes.

With her guardian gone she took a steadying breath then moved that last little bit to the booth. It took her only a few moments to get settled and set up. Her cards are set on the small table and begging passers by to look at them. They were old. Worn. Mysterious. Hand painted and faded. Clearly they had seen so much use and told so many fortunes. What would they hold for someone new?

Sarnai had to think about how she was going to employ her illusions tonight. She did need the practice. It would help her in the long run. She had expressed a desire to become an Arcanist when she was younger. At first Inaza was against it because it would take her away from her smuggling job. But then the man had discovered that the illusions she would be able to use with further skill would help her to become an even better smuggler. With the promise of a better outcome for each job he agreed to let her learn. It wasn’t a waste of her time and by extension his time.

“Might as well get this night started…” She said to herself as she smoothed down the skirts she wore. Turning her grey eyes to the people walking past she placed a charming smile on her face. “Come! Come and see what fate has in store for you~ Let the cards divine your future! Allow the mysteries of life to be laid out before your eyes~!” As people looked her way, taking note of her charming words and tone, she held out her hand invitingly, beckoning them to step into her web.

----------------

The night ended some time after midnight. Her last client being the end of the line. The rest of the booths had long since closed up and the caravanners had shuffled off to find their dinners or beds. When Sarnai finished closing the booth she yawned and made her way back toward her wagon. It was apart from the others since she wasn’t part of the main caravan. Inaza often haggled to have her included once they found a place to stop. They didn’t travel with others unless it was absolutely necessary.

“Sarnai! Is it true?” She caught the rough voice of the caravan leader coming her way. “You’re leaving?” The old man looked like he wanted to try and convince her to stay.

She only barely managed to get a nod in before Inaza moved out from his little hiding place. He had been waiting for her by her wagon, as usual.

“Yes, we’ll be leaving in the morning. I’ve left the payment on your desk.” Inaza spoke with a creepy edge like he always did.

The old man looked at Sarnai and then Inaza. “If you need to travel then we are happy to look after Sarnai until you return. We can give you a schedule of our stops so you know where to pick her up at.” The old man had always been uneasy around her guardian.

“Oh, its not me that needs to travel. Sarnai will be going to meet with her mentor.” He always knew just what to say to smooth things over.

“Mentor?”

“Oh yes. Sarnai wants to be an Arcanist so I’ve found a mentor for her. It took some time to find someone up to par.” Inaza placed his hand on Sarnai’s shoulder again, possessive in nature as he squeezed.

The little shifter was his golden goose and he wasn’t about to let someone take her away. After he’d discovered she was a genius with smuggling and could easily go unnoticed by guards and authority? Oh yes, the bandit had kept her.

“With how busy I’ve been I must have forgotten to mention it. Sorry about that.” Sarnai offers a smile to the old man as she tries to keep him from making Inaza angry.

While she knew she was safe from the bandit and his blades, not many others were if he thought they were a threat to him.

The old man frowns but nods his head at the revelation. “I see. Well, we will be sad to see you go. You are a great fortune-teller and the guests love you.” He smiles for Sarnai only as he speaks to them. “But I hope you become the best Arcanist so I can brag to the world about how you used to tell fortunes at one of my booths.” The old man chuckles.

Sarnai nods her head and grins. “Of course. I’ll be the best there is.”

Inaza’s hand loosens on her shoulder before it leaves completely, only to come back in a three beat pat. Three taps. Signal to get going. “Alright Sarnai, make sure you have all your things packed and tucked away.”

“Right.” She takes a deep breath then looks at the old man again before waving. “Thank you for letting me work at your booth.” A simple goodbye but it's enough.

She turns back to her wagon and pulls out her key ring. She wanted to get away from the situation quickly so that Inaza wouldn't become annoyed. His foul moods are no fun to deal with. She certainly didn’t want to end up running miles to make up for any perceived slights either. Once her door is unlocked and opened she slips inside to safety then shuts herself away from the world.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✧✧✧ Not So Routine
Solo - Prentice - WC 2744 ( 9pts)

Inasa walked up behind Sarnai and put a single hand on her shoulder. His long fingers dun into the curve just above her collarbone as he forced a smile and looked on at those who passed by them. The young shifter knew better than to show that the hold hurt so she continued to watch people walk by. It wasn't until her handler leaned down to speak quietly into her ear that she even so much as acknowledged that he was there and even then it was only a small turn of her head, putting her ear just a bit closer to his lips.

"There is a pick up for Kamal tonight."

Sarnai shifted her gaze to the side, avoiding eye contact with him. She had been hoping that she wouldn't have to do anything for a while. Truthfully she had wanted to enjoy a break from working for a few weeks if she could but it seemed like that wasn't going to happen. When Inasa's hand tightened she made a small grunting sound but gave a quick nod of her head.

"Be sure to pick it up." He said as his fingers loosened up and gave a small pat.

His other hand produced a small piece of parchment that he held out for her to take. Without waiting to be told what to do she brought her hand up to take it. Without even looking at it she tucked it away into her shirt. The details could be read later. Sarnai knew that it held the place and time for her to show up and do her job.

"I told them no one is to be around but these ones seem a bit bold. Be sure to keep your hood up and make sure you have weapons on you." He was keeping his voice low and a smile on his face as he spoke, so to anyone else their conversation was a nice one. But the tone he was using told her that she was not to mess up.

Her handler didn't tolerate mistakes. He liked that Kamal had a flawless record and he also wanted to keep her identity a secret. If he was the only one that knew it then he would remain her only point of contact. Which gave him a lot of leverage, both over her and those who needed things moved from place to place. Sarnai knew this and for now she was willing to let him keep that power. She was still just a teenager and didn't have the means to survive on her own. Not yet.

With the message passed along Inasa let go of her completely and moved away. He had other things to do and Sarnai needed to prepare to work later. That meant things needed to be gathered and she needed a nap to ensure she wasn't too tired to work in the night.

---------

Night had settled over the area and 'Kamal' had stepped out. They wore a cloak over their clothes and it completely covered their form so no one could determine if they were male or female. Not even their height gave anything away. A small face mask was work over the lower half of their face to farther add to the mystery.

They fast approached the place they were meant to pick up the item that needed to be moved. From the instructions provided it was simple task. Collect the box that had the item inside and them get it across the border within two days. It was a bit of a rush on the deadline but wasn't impossible. If they moved fast enough and avoided stopping unnecessarily then it should be fine.

So far things were going smoothly. The box was where it was meant to be and they picked it up. Kamal didn't bother to look inside, the contents were not their concern. They never did need to or want to know what was being moved. It made things easier in the long run. As they tucked the box into their cloak, hidden away in a side satchel, there was a sound behind them. The sound of footsteps that weren't supposed to be there.

What had Inasa said? The client had seemed a bit more bold? That could be an issue.

Kamal turned to see what the noise was and was met with the sight of a tall male shifter looking at them with narrowed eyes. An expression on the man's face said he was trying to figure out who they were.

"Kamal?" The man asked while looking them up and down.

Of course they didn't respond. That would just be stupid. If he didn't know already then them answering would be a give away. The only concern they had right now was if this man was alone or not. But the answer came with the sound of gravel moving on the ground behind them. There was more than one. Narrowing their own eyes they turned their head to see how close this one was. It could be an issue if they were close enough to grab them.

"So this is the famous smuggler huh?" The second man said. He was a bit shorter than the first but seemed to be a bit more on the stocky side. "Doesn't look like much to me."

Kamal guessed them to be about ten feet or so away, much closer than the first male. And so long as they kept an ear out then the first one wouldn't get too close without them knowing.

"Has to be. They picked up the package." The first man, Kamal decided he would be Twiggy, pointed to where the small box had been.

"Well, it saved us the trouble of finding him." The second male, Kamal nicknamed him Barrel, sneered.

They found it somewhat amusing that the two men assumed them to be male. It would make things a bit easier in the future if it stayed that way but they weren't going to confirm or deny the assumption. Let people come to their own conclusions.

Twiggy chuckled and took a step forward, that earned him a look from Kamal. They shifted so that they could keep both in their peripheral vision at least. While they knew this was a waste of time they also didn't see a way out of it without causing a scene and that was the last thing they needed if they were to do their job the right way. So they slowly moved their hands to the blades at their thighs. Thankfully the action was hidden by the cloak.

"Why don't you be a good smuggler and let us take you in, yeah? The boss lady would love to have a word with the great Kamal." Barrel spoke as he moved forward.

The two were closing in and it made Kamal's hands twitch a bit. It was never a good idea to make an animal feel cornered, they were liable to lash out violently. It was no different with Kamal. Their eyes darted from Twiggy to Barrel to figure out who was closer and which was the bigger threat to their overall well being. It ended up being Barrel that was labeled as the most dangerous and so another few steps and they got a taste of steel.

One blade came out of its sheath and was dragged across the man's arm in warning. With that done Kamal jumped back and moved their feet to put some distance between them and the two men.

"Argh!" Barrel cradled his arm close to him, dropping his eyes to the wound to make sure it wasn't too deep, then glared back at Kamal. "You little s**t. Now you've done it." He motioned with his head for Twiggy to do something.

Kamal saw that action though and they were no stranger to non-verbal commands. That was clearly meant as a signal for the other man to do something. So their attention switched from one man to the other easily and the second blade was pulled from it's sheath and brought out as well. Now, with both daggers out, Kamal sank into a fighting stance. Fighting wasn't the best and it was cutting into their time for the deadline but if this was a test to make sure that they could do their job properly if faced with delays then they couldn't afford to fail.

"Heh. He thinks he can take us both." Twiggy said with a bit too much confidence.

Kamal didn't fall for the taunt though. Instead they waited. And it paid off. When Twiggy made a lunge for them they danced to the side and made a slice over his side. The man hissed loudly and stumbled away. The smuggler didn't stand by or wait to see the damage. Twiggy had created an opening for escape and they were going to take it. So with swift feet Kamal fled. Keeping their steps light was easy with how little weight they had and the years of practice. The only thing that gave away that there was someone to chase were the shouts from Twiggy and Barrel.

Inwardly Kamal cursed them for being loud. If they wanted something smuggled shouldn't they be quiet about the whole thing? But it wasn't her place to ask the questions, that was for Inasa. Right now they just needed to get away into the darkness of the jungle so they could be lost to the shadows and make their way to the border. They had lost precious minutes in dealing with those two.

---------------------

Apart from the initial problem the escape had gone just fine. The travels through the dark jungle had even gone pretty much unhindered as well. If Kamal had time to really sit and think about it then it seemed a bit suspicious as to how easy it was. No one followed. Not even when they doubled back to make sure. There was no sign of someone trailing them.

Normally that was a good thing but with the sketchy beginning there should have been someone. Right? But who was Kamal to look a gift horse in the mouth? Perhaps Twiggy and Barrel had just given up to lick their wounds and report back that the smuggler had gotten away.

Getting to the border was easy and Kamal didn't stop often. They were trained to continue moving along for hours without sleep or rest. It made them more efficient. Something Inasa liked. So when Kamal got to the drop off point they were pleased with their timing and thought nothing of how the job had been too easy.

That was until they handed the box over as instructed to do so. Password and everything had checked out but something in the back of their mind nagged at them. It nagged so much that they spared a glance to the room they were in. Upon entering it had looked like a normal room. Table. Chairs. Fireplace. Doors to other rooms. And three people in it. The glance allowed her to see the third person with a sword coming for them in a downward ark.

A yelp left Kamal's lips as they moved to the side, a glare being pointed at the sword bearer before they spun and sent a kick into the man's ribs. The woman, the person the box had been handed over to, screeched at the other two to grab the smuggler.

Once again the daggers were in Kamal's hands. The sword bearer came at them again and they blocked with both blades and shoved them back to push them off balance. When the man was stumbling Kamal followed and kicked them hard in the chest with a spartan like kick to send them into the wall. The momentary distraction provided the opening for the second to come at them and land a punch to their side. Kamal grunted as the air left their lungs. That was gonna bruise for sure.

One dagger was slashed low as the other came high and both caught flesh. The man that had punched Kamal in the side now sported a cut across the cheek and one right across the gut. Of course he was lucky that more pressure hadn't been added else he may have lost an eye or been losing his insides to the floor. Still he stumbled away and it gave Kamal the time needed to head for the door.

By the time they reached it the sword bearer was back on their feet and charging for them. The heavy footsteps gave him away and Kamal turned in time to see him. A lot of good it did though. Kamal was met with a full on body tackle that sent the two crashing to the wall and sliding down to the floor. The air had been forced out of their lungs and pain flared to life across their back and chest. Bruises were a certainty but broken ribs was something they questioned after that.

"s**t." The first word Kamal said since donning their cloak game out as more of a hiss.

Seeing that the other man was coming at them Kamal moved as quickly as they could. One dagger was slammed down into the sword bearer's shoulder since he was still pinning them to the wall after the tackle. The smuggler needed them to get up and off them. If they had to drag them off forcibly with a dagger as a handle then so be it. A solid yank earned a scream from the man but he moved at least.

Free to move Kamal rolled to the side, avoiding a full weight stomp meant to crush their knee. From there they got up and shoulder checked the other man to send him sprawling to the ground. With both attackers down Kamal turned to look at the woman, the only one who hadn't joined in on the wrestling but no less dangerous.

It was then that Kamal's eyes widened in fear. The woman was holding a cross bow and had it loaded and pointed right at them. Before the thought to run or duck could finish forming the trigger was pulled and the tell tale sound of the string snapping forward was heard.

TWANG.

The bolt flew through the air with only a little wobble. A vicious little thing that had it's sights set on it's target.

THUD.

It bit into the flesh and dug in deep like it was made to do. Completely unforgiving. Cold seeping into the skin around it.

"Hng.." The air left Kamal's throat with some effort as they felt the pain of a bolt entering their body.

So many thoughts went through their mind in that moment. The first being pain. The second being flight. The third was Inasa's voice. Never leave anything behind. It said. Kamal put one hand awkwardly over the injury, still sporting the bolt as it half stuck out of her side, and turned to look around wildly. What had they left that could be traced to them? The dagger!

As the woman went to reload the crossbow, Kamal moved with a speed they hadn't had before. Adrenaline kicked in and told them to get out of there as they were in real danger of not leaving that room alive. So they bent as they rushed on. Free hand gripping the dagger still in the sword bearer's shoulder and ripping it out as they surged past. Another yell filled the room and soon Kamal had the door slammed open.

Quick on their feet they exited the room and rushed out to safety. They needed to find somewhere to hide. Somewhere to lick their wounds! Somewhere that they couldn't be discovered by their attackers.

And so they ran. Crossbow bolt still in their side, bruises blooming all over, ribs sore with each breath. Kamal ran until they could run no more. Their legs felt numb and shaky. Eventually they simply gave out and the smuggler fell to the ground, rolling with the momentum and eventually coming to rest in the tall grass. Thankfully they were hidden from plain sight but anyone would easily find them if they walked close enough. For now their eyes fluttered closed. Kamal was out of energy, the high of adrenaline was gone and the pain was taking over. Sleep quickly claimed their small frame and lulled them into painless darkness for the time being.

Quest - Prentice - WC 577

She had wasted days getting patched up from the ambush that she’d walked into. Sarnai had a feeling that when she got back to Inaza that she was going to be in a lot of trouble. Not that she could help it this time. What else was she supposed to do? Bleed out? Let them take her and hide her away the stars know where? No thank you.

Now she was making her way back to their meeting place but still favoring the one side. Her hand was pressed over the bandage that hid the stitches. Her skin had mended back together thankfully but every move she made pulled at it. The shifter figured she only had a few more days of the stitches being in and then she could remove them. Of course that was provided she didn’t rip them before hand.

“Just have to remember to take it easy.” She said quietly. “Easier said than done of course..” Here she bit at her bottom lip.

When one worked for Inaza they didn’t get to take it easy. She was fairly certain she was going to be punished for being gone as long as she had been. Even if it was to recover. Her handler was likely going to tell her that she could have started her walk back sooner rather than laying in a sick bed. Which she didn’t entirely disagree. Sarnai honestly could have started to walk back a day or so earlier, if she hadn’t had a rather stern healer making her take the time to rest.

“I really need to get my freedom from him.” She sighed.

It had been a thought in the back of her mind for a long time. While she wasn’t against being a smuggler, the job was lucrative enough that she made good money, she didn’t like some of the jobs that Inaza accepted. Like when she was asked to smuggle people. Children for the dark markets to adopt out. Or the poor who were used as labor force elsewhere. Granted those jobs were few and far between but they still happened. Sarnai didn’t like taking those. And it made it hard on her.

She also wasn’t against transporting stolen goods. Most the time. There had been a few that she mentally questioned. Never out loud though. If she did that then she would learn quickly to be quiet with a backhand. The shifter had been taught that lesson enough times when she was younger that she no longer even opened her mouth when she was told what job she’d be on.

“I wonder if there is a way to lower the buy price.” Inaza put her value up high because he was able to make a lot of money off her from taking so many jobs. Plus he was the only one who really knew who she was.

Well.. until now. The people who had staged the ambush might have caught a glimpse of her. If that was the case then they would be looking for her. Having the smuggler Kamal in their grasp would mean that they could profit. Not only was Kamal wanted for a hefty reward but the money made from their dealings was also tempting.

“I’ll have to figure something out. And soon.” She reassured herself. Sarnai had already been saving up so if she just figured out what the final number was then she may be able to be free soon.

(( Sarnai is determined to get her freedom from Inaza, the man that raised her to be a smuggler. ))
