Travel Buddy Class Choice Solo Amoe had been on Tendaji for a few months now and she had to admit, she was digging it. There was so much to see, so many people to meet, and so many things to explore. She had traveled up the coast line of Matori and was working her way to the Oban border. She had to ask for directions a lot but, eh, it was what it was. She only knew she was getting close because she could feel her feet starting to burn up on the increasingly dry sand. The weather was definitely not to her liking. But, she shrugged her shoulders, from what she understood, Oba was the only way to get to the rest of Tendaji. It was a bummer, but it was what had to be done. One of the local earthlings she had heard from had said that the people who live in Oba definitely do not live in the inhospitable deserts, but instead set up their cities around the only sources of water and life in Oba. Which was great for her, because she needed water.
She hitched her pack up on her shoulders higher and looked back and forth, searching for something to direct her to the closest source of water. Her gills were definitely getting parched faster with the dry air. She hadn’t thought about that. Maybe she should find something to keep water in so she can just kinda “freshen up” every once in a while between dips. The last thing she needed was to die in the middle of a desert and her family never know where she was.
There was an earthling up ahead near a wagon, lucky her. She squinted against the sun and could see that they were not matori, she had gotten used to their blues and greens by now. But she had no idea what it was. Her long legs closed in the space between the two of them in no time and she lifted up her hand in greeting. ”Ho there.” she started, her grin already on her face. ”Say stranger, do you happen to know where I can find some water? And possibly some containers to carry more in with me?”
The stranger looked up at her immense length with a disturbed look on his face. It was something she wasn’t a stranger to, but she still didn’t particularly like it. ”I, uh, need to wet my gills.” She explained awkwardly, waiting for the guy to say something… anything… to her.
But it looked like manners wasn’t totally lacking on the stranger’s part, and after the most awkward pause Amoe had ever had to endure, he finally spoke. ”Uh, yeah… there’s a lake further up the road, and there’s a tackle shop on the shore, they might have… something…” He trailed off, still staring, and then shook his head. ”Ok, I’m sorry, but what in the gods are you?” He abruptly asked.
Amoe’s eyes popped at the question. She hadn’t thought that earthlings would be this straightforward, but here she was again. ”I’m a kaha’iko.” She extended her hand to shake his, something she had picked up back in Matori. She couldn’t blame him, and it didn’t hurt her feelings one bit, she was just glad that it seemed to be genuine disbelief that she could exist and not disgust. That would have sucked.
After the awkward introductions had finally closed Amoe had learned a couple of things. The guy was named Varren, and he was an Oban. His dark skin and red hair was their trademark according to him. And also according to him, he was heading in the same direction she was going, and would give her a ride. As long as she didn’t break the wagon’s axles on the way, which was fair. She was a heavy girl and that wagon did look small.
Their journey was shorter than she had thought and fairly uneventful, but she had taken the time to probe his brain. What was Oba like, what did she need to know, how easy was it to find water, and would she potentially die? After technicalities were set aside she also started to ask about the man himself. What did he do for a living, where was he traveling from, had he been anywhere else, and when she noticed his forearms and hands wrapped up in padded bandages she had to ask why?
It was his source of protection. Against what, Amoe hadn’t asked, but he had offered up anyways. Apparently there were bandits along some of the more popular roads, and always the occasional shifty bunch in the cities. Varren had learned to handle himself to protect himself, and Amoe had thought that was just mighty smart of him. ”Where are you going next after the lake?” She asked him, hoping he was headed in her general direction. ”I’m going back to my home in Tivrod.” The name meant nothing to her, but it was the west side of Oba and exactly the direction she was going.
She persuaded him to let her travel with him. She was headed that way anyways. And a wagon would be much faster than on foot. And in the process he could show her a thing or two about self defense. It would be good for her. And… there wasn’t really anything in it for him, but she could provide company at least. That was something right? He was definitely doubtful, but with just a little more persuading (aka pestering), she had landed herself a friend and a mentor. It was only a few days' journey, but it would be enough for her.(Word Count: 960)

Mirage Prentice Growth Solo Amoe had been traveling with Varren for the week or so it had taken them to get to Tivrod, and she was sure it would have been a lot faster if she hadn't been slowing him down with her ever increasing need for water. She knew Oba would be hot, but boy was it more hot than she expected. She had to think that she probably wasn't going to be staying in this place for long. The cities had water, sure, but the vast expanses of desert didn't. And she couldn't seem to carry enough water with her to make it the entirety of whatever trip Varren had set out for them that day.
She felt like she was forever complaining, but her gills were starting to crack they were getting so dry between trips to ponds and lakes, and she wasn't sure she could keep this up. It was filling her with anxiety, and she hated it. "Varren, is there any place close?" She asked him. He already knew what the base of her request was, and it was easy enough to see that Amoe was dry. Her lips were cracked, her skin was flaking. It wasn't looking good for her.
And she was thinking she was starting to see things. She swore every time she blinked that there was something new in the distance. Some piece of greenery that was getting her hopes up. She would point it out to Varren but he would just shake his head, not really knowing how to respond to her for the umpteenth time. "You need to cover yourself better." He offered. He settled the reins of the wagon before pouring some of his own drinking water onto a piece of fabric and covering her head and neck with it. It was refreshing and thoughtful and she was eternally grateful, but she didn't think it would be enough.
"I know, I know... I have to be the worst prepared fish out of water." She tried to laugh but it just turned into a cough. She hadn't been this bad until today, the short visits to the lakes weren't enough to keep her going. She hunched over in the seat and closed her eyes. Maybe if she could just sleep they would make it there before she died of dehydration.
It was all she remembered before she did open her eyes and she was horizontal... and wet. She thought it was another hallucination, a really good one at that, since she could feel it and not just see it ever lurking on the horizon. "Mmmm..." She murmured before something touched her head... and pushed her under.
She flailed her arms and took deep gulps of water, sputtering. She wasn't prepared to be using her gills, but here she was. She opened her eyes under the water and could see a rippling figure of Varren holding her under. "Where are we?" She asked him from under the cool, blissfully moist, water that she was in. He cocked his head and said something she couldn't make out. Of course neither of them could hear what the other was saying from their end of materials. She popped her head up just enough for her ears and face to be out of the water, keeping her poor, damaged gills where it was wet. "Where are we?" She asked again, licking the water over her lips and nearly crying with happiness.
"Tivrod. You made it." He answered before shoving her head back under again, playfully.
[Amoe has been traveling Tendaji for a while now and finally has left Matori and headed into Oba. While in Oba she has to figure out the logistics of traveling on land in a rather inhospitable area.](Word Count: 603)
