Pello was a bundle of nerves. It took away from his normally grinning self, but it was there none the less. As he floated around, his face a mask of seriousness, he considered why all of this was happening. It was really simple, enough so that he was able to count it off on the slim fingers that lined his hands.
Firstly, he was trapped within his home thanks to this terrible storm, the anger of their great mother tossing against the reef he called home. It was too dangerous even for the strongest swimmers to go outside of the safety of their village, because the currents pulled and tugged until one grew lost out at sea. Getting back from that was near impossible, and some who had tried were assumed to have settled with their deep sea neighbors, waiting it out much like those closer to the sands.
Secondly, he was stuck with his small family, entertaining his sister who was even younger and even more energetic than he. Usually, Ngaio was someone he could play about with, but even he wasn't used to spending every single day with the bright little girl. Eventually, he shoved her off on their mother, and hid away in the little corner of his room hoping she wouldn't dare crawl in after him.
Thirdly, everything was just so bland in the world. The rains seemed to cause a shadow across the world. Less light came through the waves, there was no sun to sunbathe, and sometimes it got so stormy that it was like night, with flashes of light the only illumination. For a kid born in the sun, it was difficult to swallow. His family tried to cheer him up, but eventually they focused on Ngaio, maybe as a distraction for their own woes of lack of work thanks to the dangerous travels.
Finally, when the sun began to shine a little between the clouds, leaders from their home traveled out to seek those lost and connect with the other settlements. With the hapuna being such swift simmers, and having a network of established communication teams, word came back quickly that something had changed around them. Where there once was a grooved bank of sand and grass, a river sprung to life feeding freshwater into the ocean. Those that swum into it began to feel light headed, like they were walking on land, and struggled to adapt. Only a few lasted long enough to acclimate, and were determined to explore deeper.
Pello wasn't really sure why everyone was excited to swim up against the strong river current. The few other rivers they found led no where fast, so why was this one so different. It was little Ngaio who grinned, having heard from her friend who heard from her parents, about the truth of the freshwater. Ages ago, there used to be races above the sea. They lived in the shallow rivers and murky swamps of the mainland, where they survived with little support from the ocean dwellers. The reef travelers would be a trading post, but most deep sea dwellers cared not to interact. It mainly was the reef and the rivers, with the others content to sit outside of the partnership.
Eventually, the river began to dry out, and any possibly way to pass was cut off. Most assumed the rest of the mainland dried too, but still there was curiosity and hope. Maybe, they still lived. Maybe they thrived. Maybe they would be ready for another relationship.
Pello found the curiosity inspiring him to perk up. The sun was starting to shine, an adventure was about to begin, and he was finally ready to visit his friend. Oh, he couldn't wait to see Kaikamahine, to see what she heard and what she thought. His friend was just as curious as he, and he loved to visit her and gossip while they played. He also was curious about what Etana would think. He wasn't too sure about her, their relationship merely once every so often meetings, and her sister scared the heck out of him. But he wanted to talk about it, and see if others were as curious as he. The muds and the rivers sounded....interesting. It wasn't home, but boy did he want to see what it was.
In fact, he would ask his mother if she planned on shipping out to there. If so, maybe he could offer his help and get a free trip up the river. People claimed the river people were like ghosts, the color of the rippling freshwater they lived in. Others said the marsh people were like monsters, covered in mud and grasses and able to see even through the ground itself. He wasn't sure about that, but so many were certain that there had to be some sort of truth...right?
Pello laughed to himself, swimming to the waves of the surface and surfing a bit to get on top of a crest. He tried to see beyond their sands, beyond the trees, beyond everything. But he could only see trees and grasses and maybe the top of a tall, tall hill. Everything else was covered in clouds and mists, the rains still hitting the lands but not like before. As he fell back to the waters of the reef, he looked around at the others coming out into the open. Everyone was gossiping, everyone was excited, and everyone seemed ready to get back to the happy lives they once lived.

Solo ☼ The Idea Of Home Posts ☼ 614 Points ☼ 2
His parents were doing it, they were really going to do it. They were going to the freshwater, to the lands of the silverfish and swamp things. They were going to a place not many had gone to before...well before the storms. Now a days it seemed like everyone was going at least a little into the land, to see what the fuss was about. Or everyone was coming to see them.
Pello didn't mind it, in fact he appreciated witnessing the new culture. Seeing the regal river people and their silver colors, like the moonlight filtering through the sea right before he goes to bed. Or those few swamp people who were so strict and didn't seem too much fun, but determined to make something of themselves. They were both so interesting, and it was exciting to see them appear as good out of the month's long storms.
But there was something else brewing below his excitement. The fact was, he was nervous about the idea of his family traveling somewhere new. It felt so strange to him, the happy-go-lucky kid who always tried to be the life of his friends. To be nervous, to be uncertain, it felt strange.
Maybe it was the idea of not being home, and what home really was. One of his friends asked him why he didn't mind going to the deep sea, and he responded quickly in the fact that the deep sea was pretty much his home. He grew up traveling there, making friends with those down there just as much as his friends in the reef.
He didn't know anyone in the rivers and swamps.
He wanted to know them, but they weren't his home.
He was already feeling homesick and he hadn't even left yet. Pello took a moment to consider that thought, to consider why he couldn't have the other areas his home. Home wasn't one place, but the people that he surrounded himself with.
Originally, he was so excited with the idea of going to the rivers, especially when it was announced. Maybe it was a little fear. Fear he wouldn't find homes up there like he did in the sea. Fear that he wouldn't find friends to meet and play with. Fear that it would be one big disappointment.
Pello shook his head with determination. It wasn't right to be so down. This was an opportunity for him to really make a change with his life. He could show his friends in the deep sea that he was cultured, explored, and bring a little sea life to the uptight riverfolk and the bland swamp people. He was, afterall, pretty darn good at making friends with those around him.
Yes, this was a good thing. Being nervous, that was just a small little hiccup that could be overshadowed with his excitement. His family was going to travel to where the sea met the swamps. His sister was going to go on her first trip, to explore and learn new things and make friends herself. His parents were finally able to travel again with each other, and not in waves (pun intended) so they could watch the family. It seemed like only positives, and that his own feelings were not necessary. At least the negative ones.
He nodded, ready and determined to focus on the positive side of things and ensure that he went into things with the optimism he was known for. He was with his family, and that was his home. He'd make more homes with this trip, more friends and more family, and he knew that his worries were for naught. It would all work out in the end.

World Event ☼ Magic and War Partner ☼ Solo Words ☼ 756 Points ☼ 5RPThings were changing in Kahikina. Thanks to the land walkers, magic was beginning to become a norm. Where as before, magic casters were few and far in between, known for their minimal abilities to create bubbles or heat the water, now they were realizing anyone could harness magic if they tried. Those who created bubbles were learning on the push the water like the tides, and those who could warm water now could illuminate the air.
Things were changing, and Pello was uncertain what that meant for him. Pello was not one to fight. No, he was always raised to have a purpose and that was to travel and spread messages. Sure, magic could do that too, or at least support it, but it wasn't necessary. Pello wasn't one to fight, wasn't one to attack or even argue, and so magic was a novelty that wore off quickly for him.
The weapons, those were something he immediately shunned. While his parents encouraged him to fashion a weapon to protect him from the earthlings, he simply chose to stick under the waves where they couldn't venture. If they attacked, he could hide and be safe enough.
Really, beside them being land walkers, he didn't really see the allure of how they lived. It seemed so droll to go around arguing and fighting with people. Sure, Kahikina was a land where disagreements came into play, but you worked it out. To use magic and weapons, to hurt others and threaten them, it just wasn't the ways of the land. Especially not the ways of the Hapuna.
Pello kept to himself while others went around and continued to develop the new skills. Some of his friends came to him and explained the value, explained the importance of such skills like defending one self. They shared how magic could enhance their experiences...allow them to move through the water faster or to do better tricks against the waves. He agreed, of course he agreed, and nodded at them. But still, he refused to take on the tasks. He had other things to worry about, after all Etana was spending time with his family. She seemed interested enough, so he'd allow her to live that way and he'd just follow her path.
Besides, he had too much to worry about than picking up a new hobby or tasks. His parents continued to pressure him to consider his own future. They wanted him to take on the business, to expand even beyond the shores of Kahikian. To go try and meet the land walkers, to travel across the sea and see if they could become a multi-content service. Pello was starting to question if he wanted to participate in such a job the rest of his life.
The introduction of the land walkers to the Kahikinans was something that impacted everyone, even if they decided not to pick up arms or take on magic. It meant the world was continuing to expand, to grow beyond their borders. Many were trying to figure out how they could make it across the sea, to go to the new lands that some of the land walkers spoke of. To see the beach without ocean, the ice that didn't move, the mountain that spewed fire. Everyone wanted to see and learn and explore. It was exciting, it was new, and it was so different that they couldn't help but be curious. Pello felt himself drawn in as well.
Every story he heard was like the magic others craved. Every trinket they shared made him too wish to travel and see the new lands. Etana whispered wonderments and he found himself agreeing with her in secret. It would be nice to see the lands, it would be nice to meet their people, it would be nice to try something new for a change.
Sure, they could explore the deep sea caves or the waterfalls and swamps...but that was water. What about the others? What about the things they had beyond magic and war? What about the history, the beauty, the treasures. It was all something Pello wondered again and again as more rumors spread and more land walkers appeared.
There was no need to fixate on the magic or the weapons, no Pello was beyond that and was content with that thought. Instead he focused on what he really wanted. He focused on his inner desires and wondered how he might tell his friend and family. He focused on the adventure and opportunities that meant most to him.

Solo ☼ - Class Affinity Words ☼ 642 Points ☼ 2
Pello was spending a lot of time these days thinking of his future. He was growing old enough to be on his own, clear in the way his parents empowered him to travel on his own throughout the reefs. It was difficult with Etana around, but she seemed game to explore the lands she hadn't much experience seeing. He loved showing off the space for her, both in the reefs, the waves, and even near the land. They played around in the trees, danced during the festivities, and just spoke about what they wanted in the world.
Etana was more certain than he, or at least it felt like it. Where he avoided the weapons, she showed interest in it. He didn't mind it, not at all, but it just felt like their cultures drove them down different paths. Instead of fighting or using weapons, Pello instead focused on the idea of collections.
Touching his stone that he found ages ago with his other childhood friend, he brushed his fingers over the soft colors of blues and whites. It was a pretty stone, one that many vendors expressed interest in purchasing. He wondered if there were other things to discover, other places to explore where he might find treasures that he could sell.
It was hard in the past to explore the dry lands, to make it very far in. But with the rivers swelling many began to explore more deeply inland. They found creatures, stones and gems that were converted to jewelry and currency. The shells were quickly traded up north and deep in the sea, and some even began to trade them to the land walkers who expressed interest in the unique items to their island.
Pello watched this development from afar, thoughtful about what it meant. Every day they knew of the land walkers meant they changed as a society. Some left across the sea, some spoke rumors of children being taken. He wasn't so sure about that, but he could see the more adventurous wishing to travel once they knew water was an option.
How they did it, he wasn't so sure. But the why behind it made him think. Made him touch his stone yet again.
Eventually, he realized it was potentially a career path he could make something out of, especially if he went to Tendaji and brought back treasures from there. There had to be differences there, based on the types of clothing they wore, the shiny metals and materials they made weapons out of. Add in the fact they seemed so keen to trade it to them, Pello felt like he could find something really valuable out in the big blue world.
Add in the fact he could also sell it, and maybe it was a great idea in the making. Kahikinans still didn't trust the land walkers, but if he brought back things they might be keen to purchase his own wares.
The only issue he faced now was the when, and the how. When would he travel? Maybe at first he'd need to travel across the freshwaters, see if he could find anything locally and see if any of the land walkers wanted to partner up and help him with the issue of staying hydrated. The how also included how he might share his new career path with his parents. He didn't want to think about how they might take it. They had their heart set on him being a curior.
But maybe he could do both? Travel and spread the messages as they wanted, and take a little break to look around while he waited. It seemed like a good compromise, and he loved to compromise.
Determined with his decision, he realized he was thinking longer than he should, and got up to go see where Etana had wandered off to.

Solo ☼ - Growth Solo Words ☼ 519
Growth Plot ☼ Pello announces his intentions to his family and must haggle his way to a compromise that favors his future endeavors.
It was time. He asked Etana to take his sister to the beach so he could speak to his parents. It was rare both were in the same place, and even rarer that he was there with them. Even if he wasn't sure exactly what he wanted to say, he knew now was the time to say it. Now was the time to be clear on what he wanted and make sure they were on the same page.
As he floated into the room with his parents, his father and mother sent him a smile. Both finished their discussion on the next plans, before waving him over.
"Pello, we know you've been keeping to the immediate area because of Etana, but we hoped you might be willing to take a freshwater route in the near future. Do you think she'd also join in?" His mother asked, always the peacekeeper and gentle with her prodding.
"We've got a few orders heading up to Menehune...seems like land walkers are setting up a few camps there and they are interested in the trade..." His father added, and Pello nodded. It made sense, the land walkers landed near there and it apparently was familiar lands to where they came from.
He even heard rumors of them going as far as north to some isle off of the riverlands, something no one knew existed because it had been so dry.
"I wanted to talk to you about that..." He started, and both turned with understanding and acceptance...maybe they already suspected. Had he mentioned it before?
"I want to explore, to find new things and new treasures. I know you want me to help out, and I was wondering if maybe I can do both..." he started off, before rolling out his plans quickly, "I figured maybe I could travel to new locations, and waiting for the trade to settle I could look around too? I know you need my help, especially with my sister not being old enough yet..."
His mother floated closer, a smile on her face, "Son, I know this is hard for you, following in our path. You've never been one to be restricted by routine..." She replied as she put her hand on his shoulder, "We ask you help us out for now, until things settle after all this landwalker business...and then we can talk about the future of our business connections."
His father grumbled a bit, but agreed nonetheless, and Pello found his smile returning to his cheeks. They spoke long of how they wanted to expand beyond, how they'd need to work with the ships and how it might not work afterall. They felt he might be the best one to make those connections, once he understood the business. For now, they hoped he stick to the current routes, to help on his own or maybe with his friends.
There was time, they stressed. He was young, they reminded. He had his whole life ahead of him, and plenty of time to chase his dreams. For now, he needed to build the foundation, and those dreams would grow.
