Pello was wrapping up things before his big trip, taking the time away from Etana to focus on his family, friends, and figuring out exactly what he needed to bring. They would explore Kahikina for a little bit before traveling across the sea toward Yael. He heard there were a few ruins worth exploring, and hopefully the weather there was tolerable for the water-focused man.
One thing he was meaning to do, but hadn't quite find the time yet, was say goodbye to his friend Kai. They didn't see each other as often anymore, but as best friends growing up he knew he needed to speak with her and arrange for a way to keep in touch. Who knows, she might also end up traveling to Tendaji which would be great.
As he finished his pack, he left it with his family and searched the reefs for his friend.

Kai’s mother had asked her to take care of the corals around their home as a chore and if she wanted to go anywhere today, she was going to have to finish up this. Kai sighed heavily, she dreamed of the days she would no longer have to do such things and could simply sunbath all day long without a worry. She didn’t know what exactly what she would do in her future just yet to get to a point in her life, but she knew she would never achieve something like this here.
Looking up from her work, Kai spotted Pello and her mood instantly got better.
“Pello!” She yelled and waved him over, she could use a bit of a break.

Kai was a little younger than Pello, but not by much. So it was easy to get along with her and he enjoyed their relationship growing up. Their parents had hoped they would eventually get together and have a family, and sure when they were younger they may have talked about it. But as they grew up, at least in Pello's eyes, it became more obvious that they were just really good friends. That and he began to spend more time with Etana as he traveled more, and he just resonated more with her.
He hoped that Kai didn't have any hard feelings, and he sensed it, but he learned earlier on that women were much easier at hiding their true feelings than expected. So he just did his best to be a good friend and not focus on his concerns with hurting her feelings.
That being said, he still was quite happy to see her through the crashing waves, near her home. Thank goodness it was an easy search, Hapuna were a flighty race and if you didn't find them right away it might take ages to identify the coral they were sunning on.
"Mahine..." He called back, a friendly nick-name from their childhood, as he approached his friend.

“You look like someone on a mission.” Kai said with a large grin on her face once he got closer. She’d swam away a bit from the corals for now, her mother would still see her and wouldn’t yell out to her.
“Were you looking for me?” They didn’t have anything going on today as far as she could remember.
As they’d gotten older and older they’d spent less and less time together, but they never got upset with each other over it. She really appreciated that; she knew she was hard to get along with sometimes so a breather between hangouts was nice. Though recently there had been a shift between them but Kai hadn’t been able to pinpoint what it was exactly. She hadn’t asked him about it or anything and most of the time she forgot about it when he wasn’t around. But there had definitely a shift.

He had his standard grin, the one that showed off a dimple because he was grinning so big, as he approached fully. Pausing, he glanced at what she was doing before casually responding, "Yeah, I was. Need help with this?"
He knew how tedious it was to tend to coral, and would not miss that when he left. That didn't mean he wouldn't offer so that she could finish faster and they could sneak away to talk.

“Only if you’ve got the time,” She said while glancing at her home. “I’m sure Ma is spying on us as we speak.” Her mother wouldn’t object to Pello helping of course, she adored him above all of her other friends.
“There isn’t too much left anyway.” Maybe half an hour if he helped her. “As happy as I am to see you, were you looking for me?” Kai really didn’t mind the visit of course; she would always be happy to see him. However she also knew they rarely if ever showed up at each other’s house just for fun now a days. Life was swaying them in all directions.

"Alright, we'll let's do this." He said and quickly got to cleaning up, familiar with the task as they had helped each other in the past. As they cleaned, he figured they could approach the subject a little bit. Not like it was that big of a deal. Or a deal breaker.
"Oh yeah, I was..." He replied as he worked on a tough barnacle on the coral, his eyes narrowed in focus, "I wanted to make sure I caught up with you."

“Thanks! You know how much I hate doing this.” Kai rolled her eyes dramatically, anything that got her hands dirty really, she disliked. But, as her mother liked to remind her, as long as she lived in this household than she would contribute to it like every other member. Kai hated being reminded, what if she wanted to practice her hobbies? Could her mom see she was trying to build something for herself!
“Oh? Is something wrong?” Usually when they spoke, they did “catch up”, but it was never the reason behind them seeing each other. It usually just happened naturally. Her immediate thought was that perhaps something was wrong, but for once she waited for him to speak before pressing him for answers.

It was something he was excited to avoid, the need to clean and tidy. Instead, he would need to focus on travel and survival, a unique challenge he was looking forward to.
"Oh, no not really." He replied with a shrug, finally getting the barnacles off and smiling at his success. Pulling back from the water, he turned to see her progress, "Remember how I've been talking about traveling...exploring the world and finding it's secrets?"

“Yea of course!” It had bene the subject of many of their long discussions. Kai had wanted to see the world and all of the colors it had to offer while Pello had wanted to travel. They’d bonded quite a bit over this in fact, it was probably one of the main reasons they got along so well. Both had that itch to get away from home.
How odd he was bringing that up now, were they about to finally make some plans to travel together? She wasn’t quite of age yet, but she was sure her mother wouldn’t really mind.
“What about traveling?” Kai pulled back from her work, she’d finished her section.

He smiled at the memories of their discussions, glad she too was interested in such a thing and appreciating that they would travel the world. Maybe not together, maybe not to the same places, but they had the wanderlust.
"Well...I wanted to swing by and let you know that I'll be heading out soon to check out Tendaji." He said casually, "We've got a boat scheduled in a few days."
He turned to look at her and see her reaction.

Kai paused blinking slowly as she took in the information. Pello was leaving? Without her? What about all of their discussions? Kai stopped her work and turned to Pello frowning.
“We?” She said trying to keep the anger out of her voice. So, he was leaving her behind and going with someone else? She was mad, absolutely furious but she tried to level her gaze at him and keep her expression as neutral as possible. She wouldn’t want him to leave and for them to be mad a each other. She’d never had to stand so still, hands clenched trying not to throw a fit.

His smile faded away at her tone, and her posture, and her energy. She was mad, she was very mad. His ears seemed to droop as he paused and reevaluated his words. What was it that caused her to be angry? Was it that he was leaving? Sure she would be upset, but surely she had to also be happy about him leaving and chasing his dream, right?
"Yes..." He slowly responded, like he were speaking to an injured animal.

“We who?” Okay so maybe she was going to have to articulate a little more what she meant. He obviously wasn’t taking her with him, even though they’d spent countless years talking about it. So now she wanted to know who it was he was taking with him. Who he had replaced her with. Really that was the crux of her issue with it, she felt replaced. She felt like her friend had just dropped off randomly to tell her he was leaving with some random person when they’d made plans together and she felt hurt. Hurt, sad and angry.
“Who are you going with?” Kai reiterated in case he didn’t understand what information she was trying to get. “Because it certainly isn’t with me.”

"I'm going with Etana..." He replied slowly, gathering that she was quite angry with him at this point.
"'Mahine, please don't be mad. I don't understand why you are mad." He replied slowly, ears drooping a little more and his signature smile fading to a worried grimace. It was unlike him, but he didn't want her to be mad. This was just how it was...he was older and ready to start traveling, was she upset he was leaving?
