Title: In Retrospect

Summary: Nate lies awake for a little while after finally making it home in one piece, his thoughts trained at first on his recent experiences before they started to wander. Also, the first of a series of nightmares hits him as soon as he falls asleep.

It was surreal, and more than likely for the most obvious of reasons.
He knew it happened; he'd been conscious for everything that happened earlier that evening, but it was still hard to believe. It was every bit as real as it was frightening to wrap his head around, but he managed somehow and there he was. He'd survived a week in hell, followed by the briefest of moments as an assailant, murderer, and finally ending with him as a student under the tutelage of the general that saved him.
The latter happened several hours prior and now there he was, fed and showered and lying safely in his own bed, suffering but a few scars and leftover bruises from his time as a captive. Without an ounce of regret despite what had gone down, what he'd been made to do. He probably should have felt a little bad about taking a man's life--that's what he'd done, and it'd be days before the police ever found the body--yet he barely gave it a second thought. He'd simply done as instructed and, despite being given the option to save the man's life, he held onto the lieutenant's starseed simply out of vengeance. It surprised him, particularly now that he had more than a few seconds to think about the weight of that decision, that he was able to obey such an order without so much as blinking. He never realized how deep his resentment actually ran, but now there it was, plain as day for him to see.
This kind of thinking was hard to ignore given that he was having a hard time sleeping and it was the latest thing that happened to him, so it was almost like he didn't really have a choice.
Nate glanced toward his nightstand at the glowing crystal that lay just beside the lamp. It was the only light in his room now, and although he knew where it came from he found the soft light rather comforting if only for a moment. It served as a reminder of what he'd gone through prior to being saved, and what his fate would be if he stepped out of bounds in General Leucite's--or likely any general's now that he thought about it--eyes.
Now that made him shudder, so he closed his eyes and turned to face the ceiling before opening them once more.
"Negaverse lieutenant, huh?" he mused, blinking slowly. "Lieutenant Carminite."
He gave a huff, a little amused at the new name and title. He certainly didn't feel all that different now that he was just Nate again, but in uniform (and not his EMT uniform, though it was similar in a military-esque sort of way) he felt a whole lot stronger. He even got to test it out after Leucite brought him back from Negaspace. He could jump higher, run faster, hit harder...even his healing time improved. That was probably the only reason he didn't have as many bruises as he expected to have if he managed to walk away from that situation (without anyone's help, which probably wouldn't have happened but he did at least think about it at some point). In any case, he felt a little like Nate 2.0 when he powered up, and he'd be lying if he said that he wasn't looking forward to his next chance.
Which would likely be the next day if he had anything to say about it. Rather, the next night. He had a boatload of s**t to get done the next day, not to mention he was still in need of a bit of recovery time after his week in Chaltoreite's version of hell. First and foremost, he had to explain himself to his boss (and hope that he wasn't going to lose his job), then probably cover bills and other expenses, clean his apartment (and get rid of any food that went bad while he was away), get more groceries, and of course take a trip to the spa where he was in desperate need of a deep tissue massage.
Yes, before his responsibilities as a lieutenant he felt that his civilian duties took priority. At least for now, while he was still so new to the organization. Only time would tell if he let his duties as a Negaverse officer overtake his duties as Nate Whitmore…
And with that final thought, not quite in retrospect but he'd certainly come full circle to the present day and even a little into the future, Nate gladly welcomed the exhaustion that finally washed over him and he drifted off into a less than peaceful sleep...
Unsurprisingly, the first face that he saw that night was Chaltoreite's, hauntingly asleep while still bound to the wall with his head hanging forward. He watched for just a moment longer before he noticed the man's shoulders moving, and gradually his laugh began to echo in the dark room…
