Trying for 011 achievement! SOLO He'd only learned a couple of names. He'd passed so many people, too wrapped up himself to stop. He realized that maybe, maybe, it would be easier to piece together the mysteries if he had help.
He realized also that that's why he didn't want help.
He was drifting on a tide of inevitability, dragged along by his uncooperative body towards understanding even as he knew that he didn't want it. It was easier to shut down, to close off, to curl up in some comfortable shadow and wait for the curiosity to die. But it refused to die, and it pushed him. He'd found Licraesa and her pendant, and he'd thought that finding someone else like him and Coyote would bring him all the answers. It didn't. She'd had a zealot-gleam in her eye and her tone, all reverence and manic devotion, had made his skin crawl. He wasn't sure that power was a thing for other people .
He'd left Coyote at the Shrine as she went to try and collect a weapon, some way to fuel her bloodlust, and for reasons he didn't understand he didn't say goodbye. It felt right to just vanish.
And then things had happened, one after the other, entirely too rapidly. Strange gaps spread over the recollection of the day past, and he remembered shaking in front of an empty pedestal and giving it a bag heavy and solid-feeling, an offering, but he didn't remember why he'd begged it: "Please. Please take it."
But he'd gone to the shrine himself, after, feeling a renewed faith in the Goddesses, and for his trouble he'd been granted a strange feeling that he ought to have his hands occupied with something, and a habit of patting his pockets distractedly, looking for something that wasn't there, and a gnawing ache for something that curiosity couldn't satisfy.
His ability to trust the Goddesses was swinging wildly. They were benevolent. They cared. They helped. They were malevolent. They manipulated. They hurt.
He had to trust, though. Because if he didn't, the helplessness was real.
And so he told himself that they knew better than he did. Because he'd stood in the rubble around the Wall and he'd tried to wrestle out of those light-shaped arms, and he'd begged her, no. Please don't take it from me. Let me have this one memory.
But she'd said it brought only fear. She'd said it would only hinder him, and that nothing was more important than the Wall, and she'd taken it from him anyway.
He had to believe that she was right. He had to believe in the ineffable wisdom of the Goddess.
The alternative was too grim to consider.
